CalgaryFlamesGrade6 YMCAMembership

Helping kids gain independence.

Every grade 6 student in Calgary is eligible to receive a free YMCA 13-month membership to the YMCA, thanks to the generous support of the Calgary Flames Foundation The program supports youth as they transition/age out of traditional child care models, develop new interests and prepare for junior high. It gives youth a safe place to practice independence, develop healthy habits, and establish a sense of belonging in a centre of community that promotes the values of respect, honesty, caring and responsibility. The Grade 6 Membership Program is a great way for students to keep active and gain independence, as members can visit any YMCA locations on their own, without a parent/guardian.

ConsiderationsforLawnCare:

Assess the necessity for extensive fertilization Opt for low to no phosphate fertilizers

Extended Grass Length: Allow the grass to grow slightly longer than the typical length. This practice promotes long-term health and minimizes runoff into the lake.

Reduced Fertilization Frequency: Consider decreasing the frequency of fertilization, particularly avoiding late fall fertilization.

Mulching Grass Clippings: Mulch the grass clippings and incorporate them back into the lawn

Tolerance for Non-Noxious Weeds: Develop a higher tolerance for non-noxious weeds such as dandelions

Manual Weed Removal: Engage in hand-pulling weeds as a means of weed control.

ATTENTIONALLAUBURN BAYRESIDENTS,

The ABRA management and Board of Directors is reaching out to inform our community that there has been an orange substance discovered on our lake. ABRA management has been aware of this discovery for a couple of weeks and we have been working closely with Alberta Health Services, aquatic biologists, provincial limnologist, and several university professors to pinpoint exactly what this substance is and what has caused it.

We have confirmed that this substance is not algae or cyanobacteria, which is great news. Experts have advised us that they believe the orange substance seems to be biological, and have not raised any red flags with the experts as far as it being harmful towards humans or our aquatic ecosystem.

We continue to send in water samples weekly to AHS and they have passed all testing requirements to keep the lake open. Rest assured, we have several people working on a solution, and we will continue to communicate any future findings with our community.

If you are aware of any information that may assist ABRA with pinpointing this substance, please reach out to the General Manager immediately at gm@auburnbay.org.

THANKYOUTO THEABRACAMP COUNSELLORS

If you happened to see some fun activities taking place within our park this summer, you should know that these engaging and memorable experiences were orchestrated by our exceptional team of camp counsellors. Our camp team dedicated their time to creating lasting summer memories for our young camp attendees this year!

Our camps were adeptly overseen by 2 lead counsellors whose commitment was reflected in the meticulous planning of each week's activities. Well done, and thank you for all your hard work!

COLOURFUL CONNECTIONS

CREATING COMMUNITY THROUGH ART

Working together on an art project is more than just a fun activity for kids. Collaborative art often involves making decisions as a group. Kids learn the art of compromise, finding ways to integrate various ideas into a cohesive piece. Working together to create art not only creates a lasting camp memory but encourages the celebration of individuality. While working together, children discover that each person brings a unique perspective and talent to the table. This encourages them to celebrate individuality and see the beauty in diverse talents.

In one of our camp weeks, we encouraged campers to collaborate on crafting a vibrant art mural for our park. Campers were given creative freedom to paint and draw whatever they liked on the canvas. After a collective effort we were left with a fun and beautiful compilation of drawings that will be featured in our park next summer. ABRA campers will experience a sense of connection with this artwork, knowing that their contributions played a significant role in creating this incredible mural for their community!
