As part of the overall campaign, the College of Human Sciences (CHS) is committed to raising $30 million. We are dedicated to providing Auburn men and women with a worldclass education — ensuring our graduates leave campus not only technically competent, but also globally aware and socially engaged. Our commitment has always been to “students first” — undergraduate and graduate students who bring amazing optimism, idealism, and energy to the academic experience. The Because This is Auburn campaign will lead with students and provide them with transformational opportunities through teaching, research, and outreach that will attract the most exemplary young scholars to our campus. This campaign will provide unprecedented support for students, faculty, and our nationally ranked, leading-edge programs in all departments. Our priorities include globalization initiatives resulting in competitive advantage for CHS graduates; centers and institutes focusing on philanthropy, creative solutions, and college-to-career success, as well as critical early education, health, and hunger issues facing our state, nation, and world; and the International Quality of Life Awards and New York Study Tour, broadening students’ worldviews and bringing global recognition to Auburn for more than two decades.

Students A major goal for the College of Human Sciences is to recruit the best, brightest, and most diverse students for all undergraduate and graduate programs, retain them throughout their programs of study, and to graduate them on time. Scholarships will attract top-quality undergraduate students, make college more affordable, and provide diverse enrichment experiences that will position graduates for success in the workplace. Support for graduate students through fellowships and assistantships positions Auburn as an appealing choice for the most qualified candidates interested in pursuing advanced degrees or post-graduate experiences. Competing for the best graduate students will strengthen Auburn’s scholarly endeavors and, over time, help to build its reputation nationally.

Facilities
Programs
Support for our facilities is critical to providing a learning environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and innovative thinking across all CHS majors. Renovation of existing spaces both within Spidle Hall and in our external facilities offers opportunities to promote community involvement through events and outreach programs. These renovations also will offer new multi-use space to accommodate distance education and research projects and provide active office environments showcasing current developments in ergonomics, productivity, sustainability, and creativity in the workplace. These innovative resources support our mission of producing technically competent graduates prepared to compete in today’s fast-paced, global economy.
For more than 25 years, we have worked aggressively to globalize our programs. With study abroad now either required or strongly encouraged throughout our programs of study, it is essential that an administrative structure be in place to facilitate students in selecting and planning their study abroad experiences, coursework for their international minor, and/or their curriculum in the newly implemented Global Studies degree program.

Faculty The foundation for building a strong university is its faculty. Named professorships strengthen faculty recruitment and retention, and professional development experiences enable faculty to stay on the leading edge of change. Auburn has an exceptional reputation, but there is fierce competition for faculty throughout human sciences colleges nationally. Recognition achieved with endowed professorships, as well as support for faculty externships and other experiences, serve as powerful incentives to ensure that the CHS is viewed as a place where faculty members want to come and stay.

Other initiatives, such as the College-to-Career Center; International Quality of Life Awards and New York Study Tour; funds for excellence; and multiple activities of the Cary Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies, constitute dynamic outreach and enrichment opportunities that enable the CHS to make significant contributions to human well-being and the quality of life for people at home and abroad. These initiatives represent innovative, entrepreneurial approaches to programming that differentiate us from other schools and colleges on campus and from our peers nationally.

The College of Human Sciences has opened doors and expanded my worldview more than I ever thought possible. I have encountered incredible opportunities to explore and connect my areas of study to pressing local and global issues through collaboration with the college’s world-renowned partners, such as the United Nations World Food Programme. My knowledge and understanding have been furthered through once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to study abroad in Fiji and South Africa, where I have learned from cultures different from my own. I also have had the privilege of being a Global Challenge Fellow, an experience that exposed me to diverse views about important local and global issues alongside similarly motivated student leaders, and it created opportunities for mentorship from outstanding faculty members. None of these experiences would have been possible without the support of generous scholarships, for which I am extremely thankful. Each of our legacies begins at birth and is passed on to the next generation. I am blessed that from the day I was born, my parents, Barbara Drummond Thorne and Dr. Buddy Thorne, fostered in me a love of family, beginning first with my siblings. Through their example, I learned that strong relationships are predicated on family values such as loyalty, trust, and philanthropy. As I have come of age and have been given opportunities to learn more about this great university, my devotion to and love for the Auburn Family has grown much deeper. I am particularly drawn to support the College of Human Sciences, because its mission addresses the very foundations necessary for a quality life. At the most basic level, we all need nutritious food, adequate shelter and clothing, and strong familial relationships to grow and flourish. I believe that the College of Human Sciences is made up of faculty scholars and students who are contributing daily to individual, family, and community well-being, which in turn leads to a more prosperous and stable society.
