URBAN VIOLENCE LABORATORY

TERMINAL THESIS

In a vibrant celebration of community and sustainability, The Crop reimagines the traditional market experience by implementing a dynamic space akin to Pike Place, nestled in the heart of downtown Portland. Historically, markets have played a crucial role in food production and exchange, as well as community building. The Crop aims to demonstrate how a centralized marketplace can bring equitably sourced food to the people of Portland while supporting local farmers, businesses, and restaurant owners.

The project is thoughtfully divided into distinct zones to enhance the marketplace experience. Permanent market and restaurant spaces will provide a stable platform for local chefs and artisans, showcasing the rich culinary diversity of the region. A dedicated vendor corridor will be available for local vendors, allowing them to share their unique offerings and connect directly with the community. Additionally, some food will be grown on-site using innovative vertical farming strategies, emphasizing sustainability and fresh produce. By addressing food insecurity, The Crop will also collaborate with the homeless community and houseless organizations to establish a food exchange program. This initiative ensures that every member of Portland has access to sustainable, locally sourced food and produce, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment throughout the city.

PARROTT CREEK

MEADOW HOUSE

FOREST HOUSE

LOCATION: OREGON CITY, OREGON

DATE OF PROJECT: 2022-2026

IN COLLABORATION WITH: EL DORADO ARCHITECTS

Nestled within the serene forests of Oregon City, the Parrott Creek building stands as a beacon of hope and healing. For five decades, this lush landscape has been home to the Parrott Creek Rehabilitation Center, dedicated to supporting young boys who have faced profound trauma, guiding them towards a brighter future. In a world marked by systemic inequity and racial prejudice that often funnel youths into a cycle within the juvenile justice system, the Parrott Creek project emerges as a transformative initiative. Set amidst towering trees and verdant surroundings, it will offer new housing for program participants, alongside modern administrative spaces, expansive cafeteria areas, therapy rooms, and an innovative education wing. Central to its mission is the EcoHouse, spearheaded by wildlife advocate Ame, where nature becomes a powerful healing agent. Through guided nature walks and wildlife preservation activities rooted in native practices, Ame fosters a deep connection to the land while creating a space that honors and includes the local Native community. With construction well underway, the Parrott Creek building is poised to enrich lives and foster resilience, scheduled for completion by 2026.

DEEP ELLUM, TEXAS

DATE OF PROJECT: 2020

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON

Deep Ellum, Texas, is home to a vibrant artistic collective that pulsates with creativity and innovation. This diverse community thrives on artistic expression, offering a unique blend of culture and artistry that attracts locals and visitors alike. At the heart of this collective is the Deep Ellum Ballet School, a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to democratizing ballet, a traditionally elitist art form, and making it accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or experience. The school features multiple studio spaces, classrooms, and a full auditorium, providing a comprehensive environment for learning and performance.

One of the standout elements of the school is the “street” that flows through the project, inviting passersby to engage in dance. This dynamic thoroughfare is ingeniously wired with lights that illuminate the building’s facade in a dazzling display whenever someone steps or dances upon it. This interactive feature invites spontaneous moments of creativity from everyone who traverses the space.

The interior dance halls are strategically designed to face this lively street, making the process of dance visible to all, creating an atmosphere where art is shared rather than confined. This approachable layout fosters a sense of community, encouraging individuals of all ages and walks of life to loosen up and dance a little.

UNEARTHED

LOCATION:

SEATTLE WASHINGTON

DATE OF PROJECT: 2023 IN COLLABORATION WITH: MADALYN ASKER

Unearthed is a thought-provoking installation showcased at the Seattle Design Fest, deeply exploring the theme of curiosity and inviting viewers to reconsider their relationship with concrete environments. This immersive installation challenges participants to rethink the often-overlooked surfaces beneath our feet, encouraging a fresh perspective on the everyday materials that shape our urban landscapes. By examining innovative and alternative paving techniques, our team aimed to redefine the ways we interact with the ground beneath us, transforming a mundane aspect of our environment into a canvas for exploration and engagement.

The installation features a meticulously designed grid of diverse paving methods, each surface inviting participants to engage actively by walking, exploring, and reconnecting with their surroundings in new and unexpected ways. Whether it’s the tactile sensation of textured stones or the playful patterns of vibrant tiles, every step taken on this sensory pavilion offers a unique experience, prompting participants to pause and reflect on the significance of the materials we often take for granted. As participants interact with the various surfaces, they are prompted to think critically about how our ground surfaces can be made more engaging, enjoyable, and reflective of the communities they inhabit. This installation not only highlights the importance of thoughtful design but also cultivates a shared sense of curiosity and wonder about the spaces we occupy.

STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS

LOCATION: SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

At the Seattle Design Festival, our interactive installation, “Stream of Consciousness,” served as a vibrant conduit for connection and empathy among community members. The installation invites participants to reflect on their favorite places in the city by writing them down and placing them into colorful balls, which then travel down a swirling tube, creating a visual spectacle of shared experiences. On the other side, participants receive someone else’s ball, filled with the essence of another’s cherished spot, fostering an unexpected bond through the simple act of sharing. The success of this installation was palpable, with over 2,000 participants igniting conversations inspired by one another’s memories and discovering new places to explore together. We witnessed the beautiful realization that many people share a love for the same locales, creating a tapestry of joy and connection that truly embodies the spirit of our community. This collective celebration of place not only highlighted the diverse tapestry of our city but also reminded us of the common threads that unite us all, inspiring a renewed sense of belonging and appreciation for the spaces we call home.

Our team assembles the eco-friendly installation using recyclable cardboard and wood. The entrire thing was designed to travel from Portland to Seattle and fit in my Volvo

Participants wrote their thoughts on paper and placed them in colorful balls that floated around the installation, encouraging interaction and conversation throughout the day

Each ball held unique community responses, from restaurant tips to secret swim spots. Some even turned their messages into paper cranes, adding a creative touch

Elderly participants engage with the installation, underscoring our commitment to accessibility. This initiative demonstrates art’s potential to connect diverse audiences and facilitate communal expression
