OSB Punches Well Above Its Weight in Terms of Research Quality and Impact The 2016 U.S. News Arab region rankings in business, management, and accounting ranked the American University of Sharjah as number one, the American University of Beirut as number two, and the United Arab Emirates University as number three based on academic research performance and reputation among 21 universities in the MENA region. Eleven indicators (some of which are listed in the table below) were used in the rankings.

OSB topped the rankings of all quality and impact indicators, despite the size of its professorial faculty, which was the smallest among the top three ranked universities (AUS- 74, UAEU-57, OSB-37).

This is good news as the School continues to sharpen its focus on pursuing high quality research, excellence, and innovation in and for the region.

OSB and AUB have been recently leading the pack in the domain of research in the MENA region as reported by the 2016 US News & World Report University rankings for the Arab MENA region.

“OSB has been recognized in those rankings as the number one institution in the region in terms of both quality and impact of the research produced.�

In addition, our recent benchmarking also suggests that we compare reasonably well with business schools in the USA and Canada in relation to our overall productivity, and the quality of the research produced.

Our goals as shared in the recent Strategic Planning Exercise are to continue fostering an environment that is conducive to research excellence with the right structures, incentives, strategies, policies, and approaches to recruitment of strong research faculty. We will also supplement and bolster our existing research infrastructure by creating research chairs, institutes, clusters and centers of excellence, building capacity to attract external funding, and increasing student exposure to business research activities. Therefore, I am proud of our collective achievement to date and also optimistic and enthusiastic about what OSB has under way to further incubate, support and propel world-class research and scholarship. I wish to convey my deepest thanks to our faculty for their efforts in helping OSB stand out from the pack in the domain of research, and for the dedicated and concerted efforts of all in creating an environment that is conducive to nurture first class scholarship.

Dima Jamali

The Olayan School of Business (OSB) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) is a national and regional leader in business research with an international reputation for research excellence and innovation.

“We wish to continue on this path to build a research innovation hub, increasingly grounding OSB into a reference anchor point for what research excellence stands for in this region and beyond.�

OSB publications and research contributions over this past year not only suggest that we are on track, but also provide testimony to the great promise and potential of the School, and the countless opportunities that lie ahead. We hope to continue to rely on our stellar faculty and put them in the spotlight as we create an environment conducive for innovative and pioneering research that will have a profound impact on business thinking and business practice in the MENA region and beyond.

Transforming Business Knowledge OSB has led various impactful research initiatives, themes, and threads over the past few years, cutting across tracks and faculty, and having a significant positive spillover in terms of changing business thinking in the MENA region.

Among the many vibrant research activities of the School in 2016, OSB continues to lead the way in several domains including corporate finance, computational operations research, and sustainability as revealed through a string of impactful research publications from various faculty members, and reported by U.S. News and QS World University Rankings. In addition, OSB hosted high-impact conferences, workshops and events pertaining to sustainability, analytics, and data science.

We also have had a very positive and significant impact in the domain of Corporate Governance, with a successful series, spearheaded by the Rami Makhzoumi Chair in Corporate Governance. Another impactful stream pertains to Gender and Careers, and here we have been transforming business

thinking through a series of high-level publications tailored to address the challenges and realities of this region.

Other pockets of research excellence have been spearheaded by OSB Centers and Chairs including research happening under the umbrella of the Darwazah Center and the Abdul Aziz Al Sagar Endowed Chair in Finance to advance thinking around entrepreneurship and innovation, and impactful research spearheaded by the Husni Sawwaf Endowed Chair in Business and Management to improve the delivery of electronic government services, and improve on applications of cognitive analytics management.

There are also other emerging themes of interesting and relevant scholarship relating to personality conceptions in the MENA region, human resource management and talent management in this region, males versus female leadership styles, Islamic finance, and innovation management. Hence, OSB has had a strong voice through its academic contributions and emphasis of recent publications conforming to and sometimes exceeding standards at major international business schools and universities.

Impactful Research and Transfer of Knowledge

WiDS (Women in Data Science) Conference in collaboration with Stanford University brought together academics and professionals in the industrial and entrepreneurial sectors working in data science, and allowed them to focus on data science research, practices, and educational collaborations in the MENA region.

KIP (Knowledge Is Power) Project continues to build bridges among various stakeholders from different disciplines who are concerned about gender and sexuality issues in Lebanon.

Cognitive Analytics Management Conference brought top scholars and professionals together to exchange knowledge and information about cognitive analytics management processes that form the core of digital transformation of organizations from basic to smart.

The Darwazah Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Management has been instrumental in driving research and teaching case development centered on distinctive innovative practices of local and regional startups. In addition, the center’s research and practices are finding their way to influence curriculum development.

Impactful Research

CSR and GCNL (Global Compact Network Lebanon): The OSB CSR Initiative has been successful in providing impactful platforms for regional business leaders wanting to address the emerging challenges and opportunities presented by the ascendancy of corporate social responsibility, sustainabilit, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Recently, the CSR initiative became the secretariat for the United Nations Global Compact in Lebanon which has been working closely with the United Nations Global Compact Headquarters to provide opportunities for learning and policy dialogue around sustainability.

AUB’s Net Impact Chapter continues to empower young generations to drive social and environmental changes in their own communities.

OSB’s various multidisciplinary research projects and initiatives are having a positive impact on academia and the community:

Awards EFMD CASE AWARD Dr. Randa Salamoun and Mrs. Lina Tannir won the first prize award at the European Foundation for Management Development Case Writing Competition 2015 in the “MENA Business Cases” category for their case study titled “Michel Nassif et Fils: Succeeding Generations”.

LCIS DISTINGUISHED CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Dr. Ibrahim Osman is the recipient of the Distinguished Career Achievement Award, which is the highest and the most prestigious award given by the Lebanese Association for Information Systems for lifetime career achievements. It recognizes outstanding individuals in the field of information systems.

LEBANESE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AWARD Three out of seven recipients of this year’s national Research Excellence Award presented

by CNRS were AUB faculty members including Dr. Dima Jamali. On its sixth year, the national award honored distinguished scientists for their scientific research and important contributions to scholarship in their fields.

THE ABDUL HAMEED SHOMAN AWARD OSB Professors Yusuf Sidani and Ibrahim Osman have been awarded the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Arab Researchers, which recognizes distinguished scientific research in the region.

THE LAND AWARD Dr. Charlotte Karam has been awarded the 2016 AUB’s Environment and Sustainable Development Unit’s Keeper of the Land award for exceptional contribution towards the advancement of women’s role in the community.

Alain Daou

Before joining OSB, Alain worked for 10 years with several not-for-profit organizations as project manager, country manager, advisor and consultant in Canada, Central America, Middle East and Africa. Through his research, Alain tries to understand how certain types of enterprises such as social enterprises, not-for-profit and small and medium businesses innovate, scale up and have a positive social and economic impact on stakeholders and society as a whole.

Beverly Dawn Metcalfe

Beverly Dawn Metcalfe has worked at Manchester, Liverpool, Staffordshire and Keele Universities. Her research aims to advance contemporary theorizing and inform policy initiatives in order to support economic and social development. Her work has been published in leading journals including the Journal of Business Ethics, Human Relations, International Journal of Management Reviews and IHRM.

Visiting Associate Professor

Angelos Tsoukalas received his Ph.D. in Operations Research from Imperial College, and has held several postdoctoral appointments at RMIT University, MIT and Imperial College. His research interests are in the areas of optimization theory and its applications, and global, integer, bi-level and robust optimization.
