Partnerships and collaboration are really important to us and we have been working with some of the most vibrant festivals and organisations in the city and across the UK – the British Science Festival, Brighton Digital Festival, Being Human, South East Dance, Dictionary Pudding, Fierce Festival, The Marlborough and CINECITY – to bring you this packed, multi-disciplinary programme.

We’re also proud to be a touring partner for two seminal shows this season. We’ve been working with LIFT to bring Lola Arias’ MINEFIELD back to Brighton, after its acclaimed Brighton Festival premiere in 2016. This thoughtful, humane work brings together British and Argentinian veterans from the Falkland Islands/ Islas Malvinas war, to explore their memories. Meanwhile, Clod Ensemble’s Under Glass blends imagery, choreography and an original score as it comes to the city for the first time – a rare chance to see the full-scale production of this work.

Other performances mark the anniversaries of significant cultural and social historical moments. Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) is accompanied by a brand new score – composed and performed live by post-industrial electronic music duo Factory Floor. Working with The Marlborough, we bring the iconic David Hoyle back to the city with Diamond, a semi-autobiographical show which reflects on the 50 years since the 1967 Sexual Offences Act partially decriminalised homosexuality in the UK. If you haven’t visited us yet, please do pop in. We are situated in lush natural surroundings on the edge of the South Downs and the building is an architectural beauty, full of natural light.

The building is very easily accessible by multiple public transport routes. Pay What You Decide Tickets and assisted performances are part of our season as always – everyone is welcome.

ELLIE HARRISON EARLY WARNING SIGNS Designed to mimic the signs you might find outside a garage or a Bureau de Change, Early Warning Signs comments on the connection between climate change, consumption and capitalism.

Ellie Harrison is an artist and activist based in Glasgow. Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts are hosting one of the signs for 2017.

British Science Festival 2017 is co-hosted by University of Sussex and University of Brighton.

A week of talks, presentations and events exploring the cutting edge of scientific research.

Topics range from mining rare earth elements from the air, the psychological roots of the ‘posttruth’ phenomenon to hearing music through bone conducting headphones or the pioneering use of scent and smell in VR technology.

In Atomos, bodies, movement, film, sound and light are atomised into miniature shards of intense sensation. Taking creative points of departure from atomised film, music and biometric data, McGregor’s choreography is woven into an intense 70 minute film, performed by the incredible dancers of Company Wayne McGregor in his distinctive style - sculptural, rigorous, jarring and hauntingly beautiful.

Felix Thorn creates music using audio-visual sculptures he designs and constructs.

His sculptures have been previously been exhibited in some of the world’s leading arts spaces including Tate Modern and Pompidou Centre. Ed Handley and Andy Turner are the electronic music duo Plaid. They have been writing music together for the past 25 years, mostly released on Warp Records.

In 2009, Ed and Andy worked with Felix to create an original show with music written specifically for the machines. This Plaid and Felix’s Machines show brings together a unique mixture of natural amplification and audio processing synchronised with hypnotic patterns of light and movement. The show will include new material created at Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts this summer.

Since 1991 British artist Vicki Bennett has been working across the field of audio-visual collage, and is recognised as an influential and pioneering figure in the still growing area of sampling, appropriation and cutting up of found footage and archives.

Oliver Coates is arguably one of today’s most sought after contemporary cellists. He is a regular collaborator with Mica Levi, Radiohead and Massive Attack. Coates has performed in China, Russia, Brazil, Egypt and Australia, and made his New York debut at Le Poisson Rouge.

Holly Herndon became a leading light in contemporary music by experimenting at the outer reaches of dance music and pop songwriting possibilities.

Friday 22 September

Born in Tennessee, Herndon spent her formative years in Berlin’s techno scene and repatriated to San Francisco, where she earned a PhD at Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. The interactive and ecstatic experience of her live performance has now evolved into a group which includes the artists Mat Dryhurst and Colin Self.

Since the early Nineties James Lavelle has been on a global roller coaster ride. It’s taken him from being an obsessive 18 year old indie record label boss (Mo’Wax) to the heart of corporate record company darkness and back to the light with an array of dynamic visual adventures based around the collective musical experience of his UNKLE project.

The music released today under the banner of UNKLE is very different from early UNKLE records. The spirit is the same.

RYOJI IKEDA SUPERCODEX [LIVE SET] Saturday 23 September 8pm £15 (advance) £12 (concs) £17 (on the door)

Taking the shape of an audiovisual concert, supercodex [live set] uses raw data and mathematical models to generate music and projections. A continuation of superposition (2012) which focuses on quantum information, the concert reworks musical concepts from this work into an immersive club show.

Ikeda uses different and continuous fragments to construct one flux; creating a union between visual and auditory dimensions which reveals, between codes and calculations, a beating heart as well as the arithmetical and computational essence of sound.

Wolfgang Voigt, born in 1961 in Cologne, Germany, is an artist, music producer, label owner and one of the co-founders of the Cologne-based electronica and techno label Kompakt.

His project GAS, an intoxicatingly sinister work of sound art based on highly condensed classical sound sources has thrilled a global audience far beyond the traditional electronica and techno music scenes for over 20 years.

In a society increasingly obsessed with the digital, Katie Dale-Everett Dance presents an innovative mixed-media choreographic programme exploring the consequences and patterns of our online actions. This show is for anyone on social media. Please bring a smartphone to take part.

There will be screenings of the company’s film, Artefact 1 from 2 – 10 October in ACCA’s café-bar, during opening hours.

This choreographic work combines dance, animation and projections to explore the permanence of online data.

Any Table Any Room is a performance conceived and created by Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion, which invites four local artists to join them onstage in each new space. For this performance, the two artists will be joined by Janine Fletcher, Claire Godsmark, Sue MacLaine and Scott Smith.

How possible is community? How do we retain our autonomy while being in a group? Using 72 clay objects created by the performers, communal singing and Indian drones on smartphones, Any Table Any Room is a gregarious exploration of the pleasures and demands of being and working together.

THE MESSY EDGE

EXPLORING THE FRONTIERS OF DIGITAL CULTURE

The Messy Edge is a Brighton Digital Festival conference that will explore the frontiers of digital culture through a mixture of speakers and artists’ work. It will challenge dominant perspectives and provide a space to think about how we run the risk, despite the opportunities that digital gives us, of building a future on the deeply flawed foundations of the present.

Speakers include Tabita Rezaire, Usman Haque, Pinar Yoldas, Morehshin Allahyari and Daniel Rourke.

Could anyone ever persuade you to take your dance moves to the stage?

Meet three brave dads who agreed to dance with their daughters in a new show. Through a series of touching episodes, they explore fatherchild relationships with dance, humour and playful storytelling.

Joined by a supporting cast of father-figures, sons and daughters of all ages, they fearlessly slip and slide their way through their similarities and differences, hopes and regrets, to a joyful and eclectic soundtrack.

The Horrors release their stunningly assertive fifth album ‘V’ this Autumn and tour the UK to coincide. Previewed by the first single ‘Machine’, the new album sees the group at their majestic, imperial best, although the ten tracks on the album are so diverse that when the final song and future single ‘Something To Remember Me By’ appears to channel dance, trance and ‘80s pop genres, it feels like both the most natural thing in the musical world and also the most surprising. ‘V’ shows the group at the peak of their powers, exhibiting a freedom and sense of exploration that feels truly liberating.

At once medical laboratory, museum exhibit and gallery, Under Glass lifts characters out of the hurly burly of everyday life and frames their moments of solitude; examining human beings attempting, with varying success, to live within their limits.

Continuing Clod Ensemble’s reputation for work that defies traditional categorisation, Under Glass blends visual imagery, choreography and an original score to create an animated exhibition of human life.

‘I devote myself to transgress limits. I dig into human behavior. I’m a human voracious hunter, consumer and provocateur. I show the horrors of hidden lies. One of the biggest film events of the century, a ‘holy grail’ among film finds, Fritz Lang’s 1927 sci-fi epic can now be seen as the director originally intended and as seen by German cinema-goers in 1927.

Factory Floor are Nik Void and Gabriel Gurnsey, whose electronic improvisational style of performance has seen them at home in gallery spaces like Tate Modern, and having played in clubs like Fabric and Berghain, as well as the remote volcanic Island of Stromboli, in collaboration with British artist Haroon Mirza.

Their critically acclaimed album 25 25 was released in the summer of 2016 on James Murphy’s influential DFA Records.

In 2017 they began work on fulfilling a commission by London Science Museum to perform a brand new live score to Metropolis.

It comes to Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, following its acclaimed London premiere.

What is a veteran? Survivor? Hero? Mad Man? In Lola Arias’ MINEFIELD six Falklands/Malvinas war veterans who once faced each other across a battlefield now face each other across a stage. Together they share memories, films, songs and photos as they recall their collective war and embody the political figures that led them into it. Meaning is an annual gathering that connects and inspires the people who believe in better business. At this year’s conference theatre maker Zoë Svendsen joins an international line-up of thinkers and do-ers from business, academia and the arts.

In conversation with renegade economist Kate Raworth, Zoë will be exploring the question: ‘what is the best possible economic structure for responding to climate change?’

This event takes place at Brighton Dome.

Babylon (1980) focuses on the lives of young Black South Londoners following a sound system. Revolutionary in the way in which it authentically portrayed young Black British lives, the film is infused with the spirit of resistance as the protagonists kick against police brutality, racism and lack of job opportunities.

Directed by Franco Rosso

Significant in Black British history, the soundtrack features music from Denis Bovell and Aswad.

Babylon will be introduced by Kelly Foster, public historian and specialist on Black British music.

A round table with Kelly Foster, Professor Paul Goodwin (Chelsea College of Arts) and Mykaell Riley (Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster and former lead singer with Steel Pulse) will follow the screening.

The Famous plunges into the ghostly underworld of popular culture, seeking the redemptive purity behind her own promiscuous behaviour, in this irreverent pop-phenomenon of music, dance, and witch-bitch ritual.

Blurring the lines between live art, theatre and fine art, The Famous Lauren Barri Holstein interrogates representations of female subjectivity, looking at ways in which social media and consumerism have redefined how we relate to the female body.

Reflecting fundamental elements of sound and soul, Ukrainian ‘ethno-chaos’ band DakhaBrakha create a world of unexpected new music. They return to Brighton for their first show at Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts.

Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture.

Expect theatrics and tribal musical moments reminiscent of Radiohead, Chicks on Speed and Beastie Boys.

BRIGHTON ROCK: REDUX

As part of his ongoing Redux Project, DeDomenici collaborates with local volunteers to recreate sections of popular films, shot for shot, in the original locations, with budget props, costumes and effects - which he edits and premieres in front of an audience, often within a few days.

For Brighton DeDomenici plans to remake scenes from Brighton Rock, on the anniversary of its original release in 1947.

A spectacularly lo-fi celebration and subversion of cinema, the Redux Project is also a singular way of participating in movie history.

Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts will host the premiere of Brighton Rock: Redux, along with a few other classics from DeDomenici’s ongoing Redux Project.

Diamond is an unforgiving queer performance of sexuality and British culture exploring LGBT history from 1957 to 2017 through the personal biography of avant garde performer David Hoyle.

Weaving together intimate personal accounts and landmark events, Diamond charts David’s rise from a gay adolescent in Blackpool, through famous Channel 4 anti-drag queen cult phenomenon Divine David, to the performer he is today.

The live incarnation of Hidden Orchestra combines the duelling beats of two full drum kits (care of Jamie Graham and Tim Lane) with piano and violin from Poppy Ackroyd and Joe Acheson’s bass and electronics.

Their recent performance at The Royal Albert Hall alongside The Pharcyde, Submotion Orchestra, Andreya Triana and Henry Wu was a milestone event building on a dizzying run of gigs this decade, from sellout AV shows at London’s Union Chapel and St John at Hackney to hundreds of headlines and festivals at home and around the world.

Brighton’s only professional pantomime returns with a high-flying adaptation of the much-loved fairy tale.

The streets are a place of little comfort, escape and redemption are impossible and there is no fairy tale ending. See Dickens’ Oliver Twist in a new light as Tony Adigun’s Avant Garde Dance flips your expectations of five familiar characters, with their unmatched contemporary hip hop style.

ACCESSIBILITY We aim to provide an inclusive and enjoyable experience for all our visitors and our arts spaces are accessible to all. Many of our performances are BSL interpreted, captioned, audio described or suitable for those who are D/deaf or hard of hearing. We also organise touch tours and relaxed performances.

An infra-red audio system is available in our auditorium and studio spaces. Two types of hearing enhancement are available: headsets for people who don’t use hearing aids, or neck loops for use with a hearing aid by switching it to the ‘T’ position.

We follow the guidance of Attitude is Everything and have been awarded the Bronze Award in their Charter of Best Practice.

Travel from Brighton or Lewes to Falmer by train in less than 10 minutes, around every 15 minutes.

You can also take the 25 or 25X or N25 bus direct from central Brighton. Car parking is available near our venue (free at evenings and weekends). There are also plenty of bike racks available for cyclists.

DRINK Our bar serves a selection of local beers, wines, spirits, soft drinks, ice-cold cocktails, a range of teas and barista coffee.

MEET The sun-dappled space is the perfect place to meet, with plenty of plants and full of natural light.

RELAX Our designers have furnished the space with a distinctive combination of refurbished Basil Spence chairs, mixed with bespoke oak tables and mid-century sofas and armchairs.
