RELATIONSHIP ARTICLE: GET OUT OF YOUR BOX

by Craig and Sharon Butts People are going to relate? but what happens when the relating gets stale?

Often times that is when the complaining begins. You complain to your friends, your partner, strangers if they start the conversation, anyone who will listen. And if you are in a surviving relationship, that is as far as a solution goes.On the other hand, should you find yourself in a thriving or healthy relationship, you and your partner step outside the box and add a little spice. A thriving healthy relationship is when we respond to the spirit of love and carry it forward through the practice of compassion, nurturing, listening, collaboration, etc.

As human beings, this is where we bring focus to our environment to uplift and strengthen our relationship. The environment includes all that surrounds you: the forest, the ocean, the animals, people your mate, the room you?re in, just to mention a few. To get out of our box, we expand our environment. This happens by doing something different. Explore each other?s hobbies together, take walks together, play games together, go on dates together.

Do you see the pattern? It requires togetherness, a sharing of time and space in a way that creates connection between you and your partner.

Ancient wisdom describes human beings as having five layers of experience: the environment, the physical body, the mind, the intuition and our self/ spirit, which we call the soul. If compassion and care are kindled within ourselves, they will form the basis for a deeper connection to, and care for both, others and the environment. February is the month we go above and beyond to do something special and different for our lovers.

Aunt Pol ly Jackson When slave catchers stepped into this Ohio town they got a rude awakening from Aunt Polly Jackson. With a butcher knife and hot water, she made sure going back to enslavement was NOT an option.

Aunt Polly Jackson was a middle-aged free Black woman who didn't settle just for her own freedom. She used the same system that freed her to become a fence abolitionist.

Aunt Polly Jackson escaped through the Underground Railroad.

She found a new home in a town called Africa near Ripley, Ohio made up of other escapees. Anti-abolitionists established the reverse underground railroad where free people were kidnapped and re-enslaved, but Jackson wouldn't stand for it.

Jackson disguised herself as an old and feeble lady. The anti-abolitionists wanted younger victims so they often disregarded Jackson.

Armed with a butcher knife and a kettle of boiling water, she surprised the slave catchers and attacked them protecting the newly escaped along the road. Jackson couldn't stand by when other 's freedoms were threatened. How can we ensure liberation for others even when we reach our personal liberation goals???

The story of Aunt Polly Jackson reminds us that there is still much work to be done in the fight for equality and social justice, and that we must continue to work towards a world where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

C i t y o f Sa v a n n a h D e s i g n a t e Co a c h Ro n a l d Bo o k e r W a y Booker is a 1971 graduate of Savannah State University. He is also a former SSU student-athlete and a former SSU assistant women's basketball coach.

A native of Savannah, Georgia, Booker played basketball at Savannah State in the mid- 1960s and was a member of the 1965-66 Southeastern Athletic Conference Championship team.

Following his retirement from the Savannah Chatham County Public School System where he was a educator and coach, Booker was named the special assistant to the head coach for the women's basketball team at Savannah State where he helped the Lady Tigers to win the 2014-15 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and earn a trip to the NCAA Division I National Tournament.

He was the head basketball coach for the Beach High School women's basketball team for 34 years. He also served as an assistant coach for the boy's team and as the athletic director.

During his illustrious coaching career, Booker led the Lady Bulldogs to 12 sub-regional titles, 22 regional championships, and made 30 state championship basketball tournament appearances. His teams were ranked by the Atlanta Journal Constitution in the state's top 10 teams for 26 seasons. He concluded his coaching career with a 786-190 overall record.

Booker was named the Savannah Area Coach of the Year 11 times, the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) Region Coach of the Year 21 times and the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000. He was also named Teacher of the Year in 1995, 1999, and 2001.

A Beach High graduate, Booker played basketball for the Bulldogs. He was on teams that won Georgia Interscholastic Association state titles in 1963 and 1964.
