ADHD Com passion and Em pat hy

At t ent ion Deficit Hyperact ivit y Disorder

Through one of t he first docum ent ed st udies involving inat t ent iveness or "execut ive funct ion" disorders in children w as released in 1902, t he um brella for recognizing such present at ions (I'd like t o shift from using t he w ord sym pt om s) w as changed in 1994 t o At t ent ion-Deficit / Hyperact ivit y Disorder. This w as done even t hough "hyperact ivit y" isn't alw ays present . There are m any present at ions w e are not im m ediat ely aw are of. How ever, as w e t alk about ADHD in t his art icle, w e are at t em pt ing t o bring a lit t le m ore aw areness t o t he present at ions t hat are ident ified/ associat ed early usually before t he age of 12, charact erist ics t hat carry on w ell int o adult hood. The t hing t o keep in m ind is t hat t hose w ho live w it h ADHD are m ore aw are of t heir "m ind" and t he w ay t heir brain w orks bet t er t han m any com prehend.

Em pat hy and com passion are at t ribut es, at t it udes, ideas, and behavior t hat is shoved t o t he side, if not im m ediat ely out t he door w hen w e don't underst and w hat a person is going t hrough. " Woe is m e, pit y part y, not m y fault , grow up, not w ant ing t o be t aken advant age of, and of course, sim ply not caring." All of t hese responses apply t o our behavior. What get s us up in t he m orning, w hat t ells us som et hing im port ant , how m uch t im e or how lit t le t im e w e should devot e t o any happening, occurrence or t ask "Behavior is affect ed by t he brain "

Most of t he t hings I cam e across at first t o underst and w hat ADHD w as, looked like checklist s t hat I couldn't help but w onder "how is t hat helpful?" Like Ms. McCabe it erat ed during her m ost helpful Ted Talk, t hey seem ed like t hey w ere w rit t en m ore for people learning how t o int eract w it h t hose w ho had ADHD t han for people living w it h ADHD. "ADHD is not a discipline problem or bad parent ing." It is ident ified as a neurodevelopm ent al disorder t hat affect s 8 t o 10% of t he populat ion or 1 in 5 Am ericans w ho "t hink different ly." (underst ood.org)

What w e need us t o consider is t hat t here are "part s" of t he brain w hich creat es t he "w hole" w e are fam iliar w it h and becom e accust om ed t oo Let 's call t his t he neurot ypical brain It get s credit for developing all it 's part s in a m anner considered, you know , "t ypical" by social norm s. How ever, t he ADHD brain has part s t hat develop eit her fast er or m ore slow ly t han in t he neurot ypical brain. Perhaps it shouldn't be called a deficit of at t ent ion. It is m ore a quest ion of "regulat ing at t ent ion." This is m ade possible by t he m any quadrant s of t he brain t hat cont rol execut ive funct ions. Addit ude Magazine defines execut ive funct ion as "t he cognit ive process t hat organizes t hought s and act ivit ies, priorit izes t asks, m anages t im e efficient ly, and m akes decisions." (Russell Barkley, PhD). What w e don't w ant t o do is m ake t he m ist ake of associat ing execut ive funct ion disorders prim arily as signs of having ADHD.

Execut ive funct ion refers t o t he cognit ive or m ent al abilit ies t hat people need t o act ively pursue goals.

ADHD can im pair execut ive funct ions, t hings like:

- Act ivat ion: organizat ion and priorit izing

- Focus: sust aining and shift ing at t ent ion t o t asks

- Effort : regulat ing alert ness and processing speed

- Em ot ion: m anaging frust rat ion

- Mem ory: ut ilizing w orking m em ory/ recall

- Act ion: m onit oring self regulat ing act ion (TE Brow n. 2001)

Learning w hat your brain's challenges are is a key t o becom ing successful in any t ask and com plet ing goals. Execut ive funct ions can be judges by t he st rengt h of seven skills:

- Self aw areness

- Inhibit ion or self rest raint

- Non verbal w orking m em ory or visual im agery

- Non verbal w orking m em ory or inner m onologue

- Em ot ional self regulat ion, t he abilit y t o m anipulat e your ow n em ot ional st at e

- Self m ot ivat ion

- Planning and problem solving (R Barkley, 2019) 7

I t ruly enjoyed t he w ay Barkley broke t he brain dow n u=int o 4 circuit s-t he " What , When, Why, Who" circuit s. While sum m arizing execut ive dysfunct ion, he w ent a lit t le furt her in det ail describing t he front al lobe of t he brain t o an area called t he basal ganglia, w hich is associat ed w it h w orking m em ory--(What ). Discussing developm ent al st ages, t hey go int o how sm oot h behavior t ransit ions (When), t he "hot circuit " linked t o our em ot ions (Why), and brought us back t o t he (Who) circuit or self aw areness.

(addit udem agazine.com / 7-execut ive-funct ion-deficit -linked-t o-adhd/ ) ADHD has prim arily been charact erized t o 3 present at ions:inat t ent ion, im pulsivit y, and hyperact ivit y. But aft er learning about t he brain, it 's m any funct ions, and how im port ant it is t hat t hey w ork in concert t oget her, is it possible t o bare a lit t le m ore em pat hy for all of our st ruggles and t heir different present at ions t hrough our w alks or life. We applaud our cont inued success and developm ent as w e learn m ore about ourselves and each ot her as people.

Oxidative Stress

If you have been following mytwin ArtemusGibbonsthen you have read hisarticle about one ingredient foodsand whytheyare important when it comesto antioxidantsand fighting molecules called free radicals.

Thisarticle we are passing batonsand I have the pleasure of explaining why/ what understanding free radicalsare and how/ can antioxidants(I love you brother) playan important part.

I like the waythe Harvard School of PublicHealth Harvard.edu described Oxidative Stress. If we don't give our bodiesthe help it needsthen at some point over time, something isgoing to demand a balance be paid and we (our bodies) are not going to be readyfor it.Almost the same asstretching. Antioxidantsfight/combat against Oxidative Stress.Antioxidants: Oxidative Stress. To be clear, oxidation isa chemical lossof electronsthat occursin cellsaswell assomething assimple asrust forming on the bodyof an iron nail.

So,in termsof our bodies, what antioxidantscan we take-in/ consume so that the bodyhasthem readyto deploy? Here are just a few (there maybe thousand s): thingslike Vitamin C,Vitamin E,and Beta Carotene

What isBeta Carotene?Beta Carotene isa carotenoid, and like all carotenoidsapparently, isan antioxidant which haselectronsthat don't mind traveling alone and the bodyusesto fight against oxidative stress Antioxidantsare a way of identifying an electron "donor"Another cool fact isthat Beta Carotene isconverted bythe body into Vitamin Aalso known asRetinol

So what isOxidative Stressand how are free radicalsinvolved Time for some reallygeekyknow-how!

Some of thisstuff we've probablyheard off; we've heard about electrons. We know that theycircle atoms. The craziest thing, like me and mybrother, theylike to travel in pairs. Now,on occasion; when we exercise, are exposed to sunlight, even harmful chemicals, electronsin our bodiesare lost! It isTHE INEVITABLECONSEQUENCESto perform dailytasksand converting all those one ingredient foodsinto energy. Here isthe tricky part; when an electron in a pair (or pairs) islost the other goes"rouge"and becomesa free radical.

The bodyisuse to this Chronicor excessive buildup of free radicalsin the bodyiswhat leadsto Oxidative Stress. However, the rouge electron isnow searching for itspair (I alwaysknow where my brother is) and thisfree radical will steal it from wherever theycan to complete itstravel.

So where do these free radicalssteal other electronsfrom? If we don't supply the bodywith antioxidants, which are naturallyoccurring in food, work alongside polyphenolsand amino acidsto help defend against diseases, theywill take them from placestheyare not supposed to; and when it comesto DNArepair and mitosis, typical in cell growth,it isa wonder whyit i sthat these things, these rouge electrons, are linked to accelerating the likelihood of developing diseaseslike cancer and Alzheimer's.

That wasa bit to take in,but for our health and wellnesssection, awarenessiseverything Every bit helpswhen it comesto making informed decisionsabout what we take into our bodiesand ultimately improving our dailyliving.

?It?s hard to hear when opportunity is knocking if you are busy knocking the opportunity. - The size of your problems is nothing compared to your ability to solve them. Don? t over estimate your problems and underestimate yourself. - You need to learn how to heal from one person, without needing another. - Bees don? t hang around flies trying to explain why honey is better than sugar honey ice tea. - Who he/she ?Is?and who you want him/her to be are sometimes two different people.

You can? t blame him/her for being the man/woman he/she chooses to be You can only make a decision as to whether or not the man/woman he/she chooses to be is the man/woman you want in your life

- Life gets better the moment you realize, no emotion is permanent, everything can be a learning experience, your reality is a result of your thinking, your trajectory is determined by how well you recover from rejection, your life is your responsibility. -

You have to get so confident in who you are that no one?s opinion, rejection, or behavior can mess with you - Perhaps we should learn to love ourselves so loudly, it silences our insecurities - It?s life It is a journey We are all teachers and we are all students

Craig& Sharon Butts of TakingTheJourney Together

The foundation of a healthy relationship lies in the word "we." As Mohmand Ali puts it, "MEWE."

This shift signifies that everyone is considerate of the other, expanding their social circles to embrace the other person for a shared experience.

Utilizing "we" implies a sense of group cohesion: a partnership, a team, a family, or a tribe. When you employ "we" or "us," you automatically align your objectives, values, and intentions with those you believe are sailing in the same boat as you. When you consciously adopt this change in how you discuss your relationships, you will observea gradual transformation in your perspective on relationships and how you respond to various situations.

The Influence of "We"-Talk in Our Relationships:

Here are the tangible advantages of emphasizing "we"-talk in our relationships:

1. **Collaborative Problem-Solving** ? "We"-talk is particularly valuable for relationships as it fosters a sense of unity when tackling challenging issues. Phrases like "We need to address this household matter" or "We must make a decision on this" are much more inviting and cooperativethan saying, "You need to handle this at home" or "I need to decide on this." "We"-talk implies teamwork and shared effort from both sides.

W e T a l k
14

2. **Celebrating Achievements** ? "We"-talk isn't solely reserved for addressing problems; it's equally powerful when acknowledging accomplishments and joyful moments. Generally, couples who cherish positive memories tend to have happier and healthier relationships. The "we" pronoun enhances this experience. Share your successes with your partner, acknowledge their contributions, and convey that your achievements wouldn't have been possible without them. Additionally, extend your happiness to others' success as if it were your own. Compliment and congratulate people, expressing pride in their accomplishments. Most accomplishments result from collective efforts, and "we"-talk emphasizes this teamwork.

3. **Everyday Use of "We"-Talk** ? In everyday conversations, we should strive to employ "we"-talk instead of "I"-talk when appropriate. Even routine discussions present opportunities to make decisions together, plan as a team, and discuss your relationship in terms of "we" and "us." While you needn't repeat "we" obsessively, be mindful of your language for a day and identify moments where you can replace "I" and "me" with "we" and "us."

In summary, embracing more "we"-talk offers numerous potential benefits, with the most significant being a fundamental shift in how you perceive the other person and the relationship.Ubuntu- ?I am, because we are; and since we are therefore I am?. Is a Southern African term and philosophy that emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity and the idea that individuals are defined by their relationships with others. Or I am how I am because of how you are.

St rong Independent Black Fem ale??

What the heck is that? And why is that phrase even relevant or recognized?A strong independent Black Woman? The American Black female is the only species on the planet that is described in this way. I have never heard of a strong independent White woman. I have never heard of a strong independent Asian woman, or a strong independent Irish woman, or a strong independent Jewish woman. So why is there a strong independent American Black female only?

It is for one reason and one reason only, to separate and divide the Black female from her Black male counterpart. It is all part of a larger diabolical plan to weaken the Black male. There is absolutely no reason in this world for the Black Woman to be so independently separated from the Black male. There is no strong independent Indian woman. There is no strong independent Hispanic woman. Someone has created a culture of independence for the Black Woman only. Independence is Death. Everybody needs somebody. The Black Woman needs her Black Man just as much as the Black Man needs his Black Woman. This is why we have so much crime in our community while other ethnic communities don?t. This is why we have so many broken households. Our Black Women are now conditioned to take pride in being an independent Black Woman There is absolutely nothing good in this status for the Black community.

There are systems put in place to separate and divide the African American population Forced welfare to feel obligated to our former slave masters , forced labor in the service industry , forced housing in the housing projects where the female cannot have a man living with her. The opportunity for advanced education for Black Women is more available than for Black Men. Job promotions for Black Women over Black Men.

16

There is nothing wrong with an educated Black Woman. Black men need to step up their efforts to get that higher education. But we should not be pitted against each other. We must be supportive of each other. My wife has 4 college degrees and a doctorate. She?s an elected official and some years she makes more money than me. But I?m not in a competition with her, we?re a team.

We not only love each other, we love our people. She?s not a strong independent black woman, she?s a strong Black Woman. To get back to our ground floor, it all starts with LOVE, the LOVEwe have for ourselves. I LOVEme a strong Black Woman, if she?s one that thinks she?s more powerful as an independent, that?s fine, but she has to know how to give up that independence once she gets with a strong Black Man. Two dominant personalities can never coexist for an extended period of time. There are a number of different obstacles in our way to renewal We?ll be writing about most of those obstacles in these publications monthly. Each issue has to be addressed and worked on in order to start the process of our healing

Are We Winning?

As the world continues to turn, and some people would like to erase all African American history from the records ,the question now becomes, are we winning,or are we gaining any ground?Throughout history this country has been extremely cruel to the black population. How do we level the playing field?Yes,we?ve made individual strides largely in sports and entertainment ,but across the entire spectrum of fields, where are we?

Because of the rules of the game, and the playing field not being level,I believe we as a people are approximately 100 years behind. Not bad for being in servitude for 400 years. Not bad for a people that have been subjected to every demonic attack and attempt to destroy us. I submit to you that we should be 100 years ahead of everyone, being that the DNA of the black man has 9 characteristics or chromosomes, while all other races has 4-6.

Our problem is that we have become divided. The old saying goes ,?United We Stand,Divided We Fall?.

We have fallen, into a pit,not into the grave. Our DNA is the strongest DNA on this planet. We are built to survive. Plans have been hatched over the last 75 years to tear us down. The devil has been whispering in your ear that your brother/sister is your enemy.

It is evident that their plans are working, and had it not been for God choosing us as the chosen people,we would have been systematically wiped off the face of the planet. They killed nearly all of our warrior ancestors, but it didn? t break us. They raped our women and destroyed our businesses, but it didn? t break us. They gave us rights and then made laws restricting those rights, but it didn? t break us. They segregated us and violated us in the most inhumane ways, but still ,it didn? t break us.

23

Our problem today is that we have fallen in to ?selfish mode?. Their plans are working on us without any issues whatsoever when it comes to this area of brainwashing us. We have too many super rich black folks to still be struggling as we do. We have community and elected leaders that have sold their constituents out just to make a dollar. We have Pastors and other religious leaders who care more about the tithing than the rising tide that engulfs our communities. We have fathers who are only fathers on the weekends. We have mothers who are carrying the load of mom and dad. We have babies having babies. We have 14 and 15 year old black males, ruling the streets, running gangs and killing each other in record numbers. We have issues, serious compounded issues.

So how do we fix these problems before it kills us all?Our Unity is our greatest asset, and our largest source of strength. Our division is our greatest weakness. Everyone has to have a seat at the table if we?re going to combat this pandemic head on. We have to leave our egos, attitudes, and ?isms?at the door.

Because while Trump and DeSantis are trying to load us back on those boats,McConnell and McCarthy are trying to cut our throats. While Texas,Georgia,Florida, and Mississippi are trying to reclaim the old south, the Supreme Court is being stacked with people who won? t open their mouths.

If we don? t ask for it,we won? t be looked at,and if we don? t fight for it,we will never get it.

Hope reared its head during the Montgomery Riverboat Melee. It was as if God was sending us a signal. Black people will need to refocus our collective energy and intellect, towards reclaiming who we were and who we are: the Kings and Queens of this planet. Power is never ceded without a struggle. Like Deion Sanders says,?we?re not coming,we?re here?. Prayer won? t get us there ,God has heard all our prayers. After prayer, comes work. Let?s unite,to fight,to reset the course of history right.

CoCoGauff, a GAMECHANGER&HISTORYMAKERat 19-years-old, won the 2023Womens USOpen--September 9th, becoming the youngest American to win the title since Serena Williams in 1999. It was Gauff's first major title with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory against Artna Sabalenka of Belarus. Her excellence on the court had us all elated and proud of her performance. We watched her fall to the ground and sob with happiness on the tennis court at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City. There was a crowd of fans and celebrity A-listers who were thrilled with her tennis skills. Excitement was everywhere!!! All were intrigued with her tennis skills. Everyone was on their feet! For the few moments she prayed after her win, I hope she could feel all of the positive energy and love we sent to her. I hope she could feel us all on the court celebrating and praying with and for her. Before embracing her family, she shared a heart sign for the camera.

Gauff became on of the most famous faces in tennis following her impressive performance at Wimbledon in 2019 where she reached the 4th round as a 15-year-old qualifier.

In celebration mode, Serena Williams, who Gauff said "allowed me to believe in this dream," posted n her Instagram story marking Gauff's win with the caption, "Ahhhhh!!!! Amazing!!!"

Doobie BrothersLive SavannahG eorgia

San Jose California. The founding of the Doobie Brothers began there in 1969-1970 by lead singer Tom Johnston, guitarist singer/songwriter Patrick Simmons, drummer John Hartman, and guitarist Dave Shogren.

The phenomenal bassist Tiran Porter would replace Shogren in 1972. Guitarist Jeffrey Baxter joined the band in 1974 and in 1975 keyboard and vocal sensation Michael McDonald would be the faces imparted upon the souls of every fan. John McFee, vocalist and instrumentalists joined in 1978, establishing one of the groups most successful lineups.

Fun fact, the band didn't have a name when they began in San Jose, but they were getting gigs and gaining traction. It wasn't until a friend, Keith Rosen, said "Why don't you call yourselves the Doobie Brothers because you're always smoking." Noone liked the name at the time. They thought it was stupid. It stuck. "We're basically an American band" - "We cover blues,R& B, country, bluegrass, and rock 'n' roll." Tom Johnston.

While getting ready to see them perform live in Savannah, Georgia on September 3rd,2023 my friends and I began talking about old tv shows that made us laugh, everything from The Andy Griffith Show to I Love Lucy When they mentioned The Doobie Brothers starring in two episodes of ABC's sitcom What's Happening, it just made me think how incredible. In January 1978 they sang many of their hits including Little Darling and Taking It To The Street!!

35

Everyone at the table, with the exception of us youngins, remembered the iconic unveiling of Rerun's failed bootlegging attempt and capturing the bad guys in the end. The band that aired had members Jeffrey Baxter, John Hartman, Keith Knudsen, Bobby LaKind, Michael McDonald, Tiran Porter, and Pat Simmons.

The group currently touring includes long time members Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, and John McFee. Also touring is Bill Payne on keyboards, John Cowan on bass, Ed Toth on drums, and Marc Russo on Saxophone. The energy of their music filled the Enmarket Arena, and we knew we wouldn't see another performance like this. It was one of the best live music performances I've seen in a long time.

Television and bands that have influenced us all for so many years. The joys, the differences, the laughs And no matter what the climate of the time period, musicians reached us, comedy reached us, good hearted family shows reached us still through our disparities. Thay are a part of all off us whether we are aware of it or choose to ignore it

Our musicians, comedians, and artists have been cushioning the blow for their audiences for many who didn't know what differences lay amongst us, but needed a way to break the fall of its arrival. The Doobie Brothers live stage performance was the type of save we needed.

In 1989, the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) was formed with only five teams and by 1990 the league had expanded to eight teams. In 2022 Savannah was granted expansion, introducing the Ghost Pirates and making it a 28 team league.

On October 20 the Savannah Ghost Pirates will commence its second season in the Enmark Arena while welcoming the Norfolk Admirals. The club is excited to announce that they will have 16 various themes throughout the year, to include Jewish Heritage night, Marvel Night, and for one night only, transform the team into the Golden Pirates in honor of their affiliate the Vegas Golden Knights. With 740 players beginning their career in the ECHL to find gold in the NHL, it is a "rush" in itself.

The excitement continues as Savannah prepares to host the ECHL All Star Classic in January 2024. It doesn't stop. It never stops, because in addition the Ghost Pirates are pleased to announce their "912" nights.

If you are a Savannian, you are familiar with the code. These games will go out in honor of local heroes, community figures, and initiatives to help the city beginning with the January 25th game vs Orlando. For more information followsportscentral.com, ECHL.com, and ourghostpirateshockey.com.
