Day One: October 25, 2018 8:15-9:15 am: Beverly Hill Ballroom OPENING KEYNOTE Title of Session: Culture and Cultural Competency Session Description: Culture is defined as the accepted attitudes, beliefs, traditions, and practices of different groups. Due to the many dimensions and possible interpretations of culture, it is impossible for one to be familiar with all cultural values and norms. The principles of cultural competency equip and empower a leader to adapt and work within the cultural context of their clients.

Speaker Bio: Osayi Ogieva was born and raised in Nigeria where she completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. In 2009, she relocated to Canada and went on to complete a Master of Public Health degree at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia. Recently, she became part of the first cohort to achieve the Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional (CCIP) designation. As a Diversity Coordinator, she supports Alberta Health Services employees and leadership to work effectively across differences through her workshops, presentations, and consultations. Osayi is also an author, recently publishing her first book, a memoir titled “You are Never Alone”. In her spare time, she enjoys writing, planning events, spending time with loved ones, and watching reruns of “Friends”. She is married to the love of her life, Levi Oke-Ifidon and they both reside in Edmonton, Alberta.

9:30-11:00 am: Beverly Hill Ballroom Title of Session: ATRA’s Professional Advancement Session Session Description: ATRA’s 2020 Vision Strategic Plan is now five years old! In 2014, in consultation with membership, the Board of Directors and Executive Director defined goals and objectives to guide decisions and actions critical to the long-term growth of the therapeutic recreation profession in Alberta.

The outcomes are ambitious; the commitment remains strong by the dedicated Board of Directors, staff and membership participating in professional advancement committees. The five values of our 2020 Vision Strategic Plan and Vision Statement continue as pillars to ensure our strategic plan is on the right track.

This session will be informative to both long term and new members. The focus of the presentation is to update members on the progress and evolution of ATRA's 2020 Strategic Plan and key initiatives. Participants in this all delegate session will obtain updates and have the opportunity to dialogue on topics of ATRA’s progressive governance model, membership engagement and continuing competence.

Speaker Bio’s: Kerry Appleton completed her Bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies from Brock University. Her first job out of University relocated her to Alabama where she spent 12 years working with youth at risk in an outdoor treatment program. Following her return to Canada she went back to school to earn her CTRS credential. For the past 5 years Kerry has been working as a Recreation Therapist with Alberta Health Services in Fairview at a 65 bed long term care facility. In her leisure time Kerry enjoys boating, curling, gardening camping, travelling and spending time outdoors.

Dianne Bowtell brings to the therapeutic recreation profession experience with leadership, change and project management skills in her role as Executive Director for ATRA. She has held numerous senior leadership positions with both the Alberta and Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Associations. Teaching contracts with the University of Alberta and Lethbridge College provide a broad perspective of the needs of the entry level practitioner to those of the seasoned clinician. Dianne received a Masters of Education degree from Athabasca University and a Bachelor of Recreation Administration with a specialization in special populations from the University of Alberta. On a personal level Dianne enjoys greater flexibility to spend time with family, grandkids, cycling, gardening and volunteering.

Sarah James has been involved in the health profession of therapeutic recreation for over a decade. I graduated from the University of Alberta with a BARST degree, specializing in therapeutic recreation. I have experience as a recreation therapist in a variety of settings that sets an exceptional foundation of experience for my current role as an instructor in the Norquest College Health Studies Faculty teaching therapeutic recreation. I currently serve ATRA as the Education Director since 2014. In this position, I chair the Entry to Practice Professional Advancement Committee and have been appointed a leadership role in ATRA’s Degree Transition Project.

Charlotte Jordan has been working in the field of Therapeutic Recreation for 10 years. She is a graduate of Brock University, with a Bachelor’s Degree (Honour’s) in Inclusive and Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure. Charlotte achieved CTRS designation in 2013 through NCTRC. Charlotte was born and raised in Northern Ontario, moving to Alberta in 2008 to pursue her career in Therapeutic Recreation in the West.

Charlotte has worked for Alberta Health Services in neuro rehab and Carewest in the transitions program as well as long term-care for the adult population where she currently works. (Continued on next page.)

Charlotte has served as vice-chair and chair of ATRA’s Central Chapter, as well has co-chaired and served as a committee member for previous ATRA Symposium’s. Charlotte currently sits as Secretary/Treasurer for ATRA’s Provincial Board of Director’s since 2015.

Charlotte has an active leisure lifestyle, enjoys playing softball and floor hockey, doing yoga, running and enjoying the mountains. Charlotte’s leisure time has most recently been filled with the addition of a new baby girl.

Patti Lanigan is a northern Alberta girl and have been fortunate to continue to live and work in the north and enjoy a career in the field of therapeutic recreation. My initial education was a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education Degree from Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario followed by a Recreation Therapy Diploma from Mount Royal College in Calgary. I was fortunate to find work as a recreation therapist in my hometown of High Prairie, Alberta, and in surrounding communities working primarily in Long Term Care for 22 years. In 2012, I moved with my family to Jasper, Alberta and became the Recreation Therapy Clinical Lead for the North Zone of Alberta Health Services as well as working part-time as a Recreation Therapist.

I am passionate about therapeutic recreation and consider myself to be a lifelong learner. In addition to my initial education, in 2012, after taking four university TR courses by distance learning, applying for certification through the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) and passing the exam, I achieved my goal of becoming credentialed as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). In 2017, I applied and met the qualifications for NCTRC Specialty Certification in the area of Gerontology and was awarded this credential.

In 2014, I became President of the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) and will have completed two terms, concluding in November 2018. This has been a very rewarding endeavour and a significant learning and leadership growth opportunity and experience for me. I certainly have a broader understanding of ATRA’s work, had the pleasure of working with many talented, passionate and dedicated Board members and staff, have greater knowledge and a new appreciation of regulation, and am truly amazed at the accomplishments that have been achieved and the lofty goals that ATRA continues to pursue to make our profession stronger.

In 2017, I was honoured to receive the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) Distinguished Service award through nomination from one of my colleagues. This award recognizes ATRA members who have been working in the therapeutic recreation field for a minimum of 10 years and have made outstanding leadership contributions and accomplishments that have advanced the therapeutic recreation profession.

I feel very fortunate to live in Jasper, a dream come true and an inspiring place to pursue mountain biking, kayaking, camping, hiking, and skiing. I like to relax by reading a good book, live vicariously through watching reality TV shows, exercise, and go on walks with my husband, Terry and Tess, our Golden Retriever. Life is good!

Tiffany Morin has been working in the field of Therapeutic Recreation for over 17 years. She is a graduate of the Therapeutic Recreation (Gerontology) Diploma program at Lethbridge College and recently completed her bachelor’s degree in Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies at the University of Calgary. Tiffany became a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) in January 2018. Tiffany has experience working in the areas of gerontology, dementia, psychiatry, and neuro & MSK rehabilitation in Australia, USA, and Canada.

She currently works for Alberta Health Services with the Community Accessible Rehabilitation team in downtown Calgary, Alberta.

Tiffany was a member of the CTRA Banff Conference planning committee, her local ATRA chapter board, and currently serves as the ATRA Continuing Competence Director.

When not working or in school, you will find Tiffany hiking, camping, or kayaking in the mountains, travelling, volunteering in her community, or at a folk music festival Michelle Richard has been an ATRA member since 1998 and am the Communication Director on the ATRA Board of Directors. I have been employed as a Recreation Therapist with AHS for 20 years being an active team member on different multidisciplinary teams providing therapeutic recreation to all ages and populations including; brain injury, stroke rehabilitation, acute care, and palliative care. Currently I am the Professional Practice Lead for Recreation Therapy in the Central Zone and have been in this position since April 2017. I live in Innisfail Alberta, I am married to my best friend Marc and am so proud of my 2 daughters Kylee (13) and Brooke (11). I enjoy being active and playing several different sports, and I am very involved in the girls’ activities. I am athletic, a bit crafty, a tad geeky, and I rarely watch TV. You can find me on my computer in the evenings with music on and if you can’t find me there I will most likely be at a concert. I have attended well over 75 concerts in my lifetime including; Aerosmith, Justin Bieber, Tragically Hip, U2 and P!NK only to name a few.

1:00-2:30 pm Breakout Session #1 1-A: Beverly Hills Ballroom Title of Session: Non-Indigenous Recreation Therapists Alongside Indigenous participants (Cultural acceptance and competency) Session Description: Are you interested in creating programs that meet the needs of Indigenous participants? Indigenous scholars and research highlight differences between Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of being and knowing are crucial for engaging in respectful relationships and decolonizing theories, models, and practices. This session identifies the challenging terrain for non-Indigenous or settler recreation therapists and provides: an introductory map to Indigenous ways of being and knowing to provide cultural context; a re-envisioning of listening and programming using Indigenous perspectives; an interactive session to create action plans for personal, environmental, community, and spiritual relationships essential for welcoming Indigenous participants.

Speaker Bio: Karen M. Fox is a professor at the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, University of Alberta. Her research begins by deeply listening to Kanaka Hawai’i voices of the 19th century about the rich relationships among land, people, ancestors, self, and pleasure, or what Western thought calls leisure, to understand the responsibility of settlers or non-Indigenous people, and encounter another world view to re-envision leisure and re-imagine research and knowledge creation differently.

1-B: Madiera Room Title of Session: The role of recreation therapists on the interprofessional team in reducing antipsychotic use and responsive behaviours associated with dementia Session Description: Recreation therapists contribute a unique and skilled approach to assessment and management of responsive behaviours associated with dementia within their care teams.

Recreation therapists play an important supporting role in the Appropriate Use of Antipsychotics (AUA) provincial project. Through evidence, assessment and person-centred approaches, recreation therapists identify behaviour triggers and strategies to address, reduce and prevent behaviours related to unmet needs. Through collaborative care planning with nursing and the care team, recreation therapists support residents, patients and families to better understand and reduce responsive behaviours and improve comfort, safety, dignity and quality of life. Good news stories and resources will highlight some of the person-centred successes from across the province and service settings.

Speaker Bios: Jane Papenhuyzen is the Recreation Therapy Senior Practice Lead with Allied Health Professional Practice and Education and the Calgary Zone Professional Practice Lead for Recreation Therapy. As a practice lead and 5 year ATRA Vice President, Jane has led work in health legislation, collaborative practice and competencies for recreation therapists in Alberta. Jane has a Master of Science, Health Promotion Studies from the University of Alberta. Jane has worked clinically across service sectors including geriatric psychiatry and community rehabilitation. Awards include 2012 Professional of the Year, Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association and the 2010 Distinguished Service Award, Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association Mollie Cole is an Advanced Practice Nurse with more than 25-years experience working in Seniors Health. For the past 5 years in her role as Manager of Seniors Health Strategic Clinical Network with AHS, she has led the Appropriate Use of Antipsychotics provincial initiative aimed at minimizing the use of these sedating medications in older adults with dementia. Alberta now has the lowest use of antipsychotics in LTC settings of any province in Canada

1-C: Piesporter Room Title of Session: LGBTQ+ Inclusive Recreation Therapy Session Description: Creating inclusive recreation therapy services provides an environment for LGBTQ+ people to feel safer and more welcome to participate. Many LGBTQ+ people have suffered from chronic illnesses, social isolation, family rejection and abuse. When accessing programs or healthcare, often LGBTQ+ people hide their true identity or go back in the ‘closet’ due to fear. This means LGBTQ+ do not live their life authentically. Learn to create a safer and more welcoming care experiences and environments for LGBTQ+ clients. This session will focus on creating welcoming environments, dialogue strategies, socialization and leisure activities, documentation, new program development, managing client safety, confidentiality and educating volunteers.

Speaker Bio: Michelle Taylor has a bachelor degree specializing in Fitness and Health Promotion and achieved the CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist. With additional education, she achieved the Recreation Therapist designation and is currently working toward her master of Health Studies. Michelle is has worked a variety of healthcare roles from Health Care Aide to therapist to Care Manager in Continuing Care (Home Living, Supportive Living and Long Term Care) and has also worked in Addictions, Mental Health and community rehabilitation.

Michelle loves supporting staff to provide the best care possible.

2:45-4:15 pm Breakout Session #2 2-A: Beverly Hill Ballroom Title of Session: Spirit of Art and Reconciliation a Healing Partnership with the Indigenous Health Programs and Therapeutic Recreation Session Description: Explore the development of an Indigenous Arts Initiative at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta as a means to improve cultural competence, create a safe and welcoming environment for Indigenous peoples. Facilitated with a holistic approach, honoring traditional practices to improve wellness and supporting access to care, while building relationships.

Therapeutic Recreation has a unique leadership role in improving access and positive experiences in health care, ultimately transforming care for Indigenous people. Find your voice in the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, and make a difference in the health outcomes of Canada’s Indigenous population.

Speaker Bios: Annette Yunick has dedicated her career as a Recreation Therapist for the past 25 years with Alberta Health Services, and has served clients as a front line clinician in long term care, acute care and community for 15 years. She successfully acquired the professional practice lead position with Alberta Health Services, south zone in 2007. Building on her knowledge, she has taken an active role in educating herself and others through continued best practice research. Through the design of standardized protocols and the implementation of guidelines for practice, she passionately shares her expertise and competencies with the team; currently she mentors and supports more than 75 therapeutic recreation staff in both their learning and day to day roles. The importance of progressive and innovative programs has led her (with the assistance of the south zone TR team!) to the development and implementation of new therapeutic recreation practice in the community and expanding TR opportunities in acute care. She thrives on building collaborative and supportive relationships with community partners to ensure that there are positive recreation and leisure opportunities inclusive of all people’s abilities in southern Alberta. An active contributing member of ATRA, she has held many local chapter executive positions for 25 years and most recently completed a two year term as the Vice President of ATRA. In 2010 she was awarded Professional of the Year.

Heidi Davis is a Recreation Therapist with Alberta Health Services, south zone. Over the past 20 years, she has worked in three provinces, in many streams of care, currently in the community and acute care.

She worked for Alberta Sports and Recreation Association for the Blind where her interest in accessible community programming began. She is passionate about using the arts to achieve health outcomes and build community collaboration. She currently works with the Lethbridge and Area Stroke team and the Lethbridge Community Therapeutic Recreation team. Heidi has embraced the opportunity to work with the Indigenous Health Program, assisting in the development of the Arts in Hospital Initiative. As the lead for Expressive Arts in the south zone, Heidi has supported many professionals in developing their practice for arts, to offer clients an enlightening and powerful journey to wellness!

Heidi received the 2017 Professional of the Year award from ATRA. 2-B: Madiera Room Title of Session: How to Integrate Standardized Assessment Tools and Data Analysis into TR Practice Session Description: In order to demonstrate the outcomes of treatment, it is imperative we as a field perform and document the results of standardized assessment tools. This session will assist attendees in: understanding the benefits of standardized assessment tools (SATs) for Recreational Therapy care and practice; knowing where to find free or low-cost SATs; the basics of how to track data using Microsoft Excel, and how to compute simple statistical analyses of the data in order to present findings to colleagues, administrators, and beyond.

Speaker Bio: Pei-Chun Hsieh PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences – Therapeutic Recreation Program at University of Lethbridge. Her research focuses on understanding how to promote well-being and positive health behaviors in individuals with disabilities and in their family members as well. In her recent grant projects, she collaborated with disability scholars and service providers in Pennsylvania to explore the barriers and facilitators for individuals with developmental disabilities in maintaining quality of life and community participation from adulthood to late life. Specifically, she and her project team developed online training programs to educate older individuals with developmental disabilities and their families about different strategies to manage their aging-related needs in order to continue living independently in the community. She also serves as a co-chair for the American Therapeutic Recreation Association's International Committee and works with other recreational therapy professionals to promote TR/RT education and research collaboration globally.

2-C: Piesporter Room Title of Session: Bridge to Wellness: Bridging the gap from patient to participant. One example of successful community collaboration and programming.

Session Description: A look at the 6 year history of Bridge to Wellness. This session describes the methods used, benefits of a collaborative approach and how this strategy has resulted in a positive experience, improved well-being and quality of life for participants. Opportunity will be given to experience adapted exercise and learn of new opportunities for collaboration in community programming Speaker Bio: Deb Bosker is a group fitness specialty instructor at the Don Wheaton Family YMCA. After working for 25 years as a medical office assistant, she returned to the fitness profession with a goal of creating opportunities for all populations to participate and experience the benefits of group fitness. Deb specializes in special populations, leading classes for older adults and Bridge to Wellness. She also developed and leads the ACE classes for cancer patients. She has collaborated on a training manual for the YMCA Bridge to Wellness classes. Deb is a YMCA Canada fitness trainer and leads training sessions for new instructors. She is married to Gord, has 5 children, 3 daughters in law and 2 grandchildren. She loves to travel and hopes to see much of the world.

Day Two: October 26, 2018 8:30-9:30 am Breakout Session #3 3-A: Beverly Hills Ballroom Title of Session: Evidence-Based TR Resources: Education Meets Practice Session Description: As therapeutic recreation professionals, we need to ensure that we are on the right track to be delivering quality programs based on current, reliable evidence. This session will explore what evidence-based practice is and showcase the evidence-based projects created by NorQuest College students in their capstone projects in the Therapeutic Recreation Diploma program. We will focus on how to find the evidence and incorporate it to usable TR resources for practice, as well as explore future partnerships.

Speaker Bios: Erin Turnell is a Recreation Therapist with twenty years of experience working in a variety of health settings. She is currently an instructor in the Therapeutic Recreation Program at NorQuest College. She is passionate about the profession of therapeutic recreation and enjoys teaching the future generation of recreation therapists. Throughout her career, Erin has been an advocate for the use of evidence-based programming in TR and recognizes the need for advancing the profession through quality evidence based programs.

Erin’s own leisure time is spent chasing after her two active 7 year olds and the occasional night of cello playing.

Bev Suntjens is a passionate recreation therapist and educator with twenty -seven years of experience in promoting excellence in therapeutic recreation services. The past fifteen years of her career have been devoted to student success in therapeutic recreation, most recently as the Program Chair for Allied Health at NorQuest College. In this portfolio, she uses her interdisciplinary skills to manage four education programs. Bev loves to tell stories and is twice published in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. She enjoys her leisure time with her husband, two adult sons, one teenaged daughter, and two neurotic dogs.

Session description: There is a growing body of evidence-based research supporting yoga as a therapeutic recreation intervention for psychiatric disorders, cognitive/developmental disorders and physical/medical disorders. Explore how yoga for young adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) falls under the Leisure Ability Model. Gain knowledge in developing standardized Program Protocols for yoga. Learn how activity modifications can be made to teach yoga to people of all abilities (strength based approach).

Speaker Bio: Diana Turin is a graduate of the UofA Recreation Administration degree (1993). She spent 7 years working in the areas of tourism, community development and recreation/leadership programming for children and youth.

She was a stay at home Mom for 13 years before returning to university to complete recreation therapy and yoga training. Diana then spent 3 years as a recreation therapist with Capital Care and teaching yoga.

3-C & 4-C: Madiera Room Title of Session Cognitive Behavioral Psychology, Compassion Focused Therapy and Positive Psychology Self Help Tools for Use in Therapeutic Recreation Session description: This two block session will provide an overview of CBT, CFT, Positive Psychology and is offered with empirical data and therapeutic benefits of use. Examples of use with clients is presented within the context of the TR role. Participants will gain hands on exposure to tools through experiential exercises in each therapeutic modality. Additional forms and resources will be provided on a USB at the end of both sessions for each participant to take with them.

Speaker Bio: Jeannie Lawler-Lunn has been a recreation therapist since 1988 and has been engaged in lifelong learning ever since receiving a degree in Psychology and Gerontology, followed by Board Certification as an advanced clinical hypnotherapist. She owned and operated Calgary’s only stand-alone Adult Day Support Program for seniors with dementia. Jeannie is the author of Creative Writing Techniques for Therapeutic Recreation, its accompanying Facilitators Workbook, Photo Story Telling Kit and Word Magic Kit. She has additional education and training in Expressive Arts Therapy and is the owner of reCreation Potentials – Expressive Arts for TR. Jeannie is currently developing online courses in expressive arts specifically adapted for TR.

9:45-10:45 am Breakout Session #4 4-A: Beverly Hills Ballroom Title of Session: Master’s degree in advancing the profession: Keeping Us on the right Track.

Session Description: In Alberta, the therapeutic recreation field is moving towards a minimum of an undergraduate degree as the entry to practice by 2021, but is this enough? Are we falling behind other allied health professions? What is a master's degree and do I need one? If you have ever considered graduate studies this is the session for you. There are many pros and cons of a master's degree as highlighted by experts in the field (Stumbo, Wolfe, and Pegg, 2017) and by local educators. We will talk about advancing the profession with a master’s degree and at all levels here in Alberta to be the leader in Canada. The University of Lethbridge will discuss their graduate studies programs to support us in keeping on track.

Speaker Bio’s:

Devan McNeill completed his undergraduate degree at Brock University in Inclusive and Therapeutic Recreation. From there he completed his internship in Halifax, Nova Scotia and later became a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). He worked as a Recreation Therapist for a number of years in mental health and addictions, acute care, day programs, and on a stroke unit. He completed his master’s degree at the University of Waterloo in Recreation and Leisure studies focusing on concepts of community and identity of persons with schizophrenia through narrative methodology. Devan went on to teach Therapeutic Recreation at the Nova Scotia Community College – Marconi Campus. In 2015 he moved to the University of Lethbridge to start instructing the new Therapeutic Recreation degree program. He is currently program coordinator, internship coordinator and instructor in Lethbridge Alberta.

Jodie Flamand completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Lethbridge. Prior to that she completed a Correctional Studies diploma with Honours at Lethbridge College. She has worked in various roles at the University of Lethbridge. Her first role involved successfully developing a First Nation, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) youth mentorship program through the Faculty of Management. The focus of the program is to educate and mentor FNMI students in preparation for postsecondary attendance. Jodie’s most recent role in the Faculty of Health Sciences as a Graduate Program Advisor allows her to support, engage, and guide students in pursuit of graduate education. Jodie is a proud member of the Kainai First Nation. In her free time, when she is not attending her children’s many sporting events, she enjoys golf and long distance running.

Aimee Douziech completed her undergraduate degree in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Lethbridge in 2017, and shortly thereafter she became a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). While working towards her undergraduate degree she also gained experience working as a therapy assistant in various settings including post-acute rehabilitation, seniors day programs, long-term care and in dementia care homes. Currently she is a recreation therapist working in Mental Health and Addictions and is in the process of gaining her Masters of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge under Dr. Sienna Caspar. Aimee is passionate about meaningful recreation and how it can build connection within oneself and in communities. Aimee enjoys spending as much time outdoors as possible , exploring the arts and travelling.

4-B: Piesporter Room Title of Session: NCTRC Overview Session Description: This session will focus on various aspects of the NCTRC Certification Program including applying for professional eligibility, recertification requirements, and areas of specialization. In addition, the speaker will provide an overview of the results from the most recent job analysis study, changes to the certification standards, special projects, and NCTRC news from the past year.

Speaker Bio’s: Robin McNeal, CTRS is the Director of Credentialing and also a Credentialing Specialist at NCTRC. As the Director of Credentialing, she serves as the primary contact for all internal procedures regarding the NCTRC Credentialing program. She is also responsible for reviewing certification applications and answering questions about each application process. She has 7 years of clinical experience working in various settings including physical rehabilitation and long term care. Robin has her Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Ithaca College. She has attended various local and regional TR conferences and has presented at local and national conferences and colleges on NCTRC Certification, Recertification and Specialty Certification.

5-A:Beverly Hill Room Title of Session: Forward Motion: An Opportunity for Input to ATRA’s Inclusive Membership Project Session Description: In 2016, ATRA membership passed a motion regarding the Degree as an Entry-to-Practice requirement for new recreation therapists entering the discipline in 2021. As we work together as an Association to create an inclusive membership structure for degree, diploma, and grandfathered practitioners, we are excited to hear the perspectives of Symposium delegates.

This session will include guided, small-group discussions regarding the Inclusive Membership Project and how it relates to the Degree as Entry-to-Practice directive. These outcome-focused discussions will be documented to guide the Association in determining inclusive professional membership categories once Degree as Entry-to-Practice motion takes effect.

Speaker Bio’s: Dianne Bowtell brings to the therapeutic recreation profession experience with leadership, change and project management skills in her role as Executive Director for ATRA. She has held numerous senior leadership positions with both the Alberta and Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Associations. Teaching contracts with the University of Alberta and Lethbridge College provide a broad perspective of the needs of the entry level practitioner to those of the seasoned clinician. Dianne received a Masters of Education degree from Athabasca University and a Bachelor of Recreation Administration with a specialization in special populations from the University of Alberta. On a personal level Dianne enjoys greater flexibility to spend time with family, grandkids, cycling, gardening and volunteering.

Sarah James is a recreation therapist with six years of experience in dementia care and community settings. Sarah has spent the last seven years as an instructor at NorQuest College in the Therapeutic Recreation program, and has gained experience as a sessional instructor and course facilitator at the University of Alberta. Sarah is the current Education Director for the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association.

Bev Suntjens is a passionate recreation therapist and educator with twenty-seven years of experience in promoting excellence in therapeutic recreation services. The past fifteen years of her career have been devoted to student success in therapeutic recreation, most recently as the Program Chair for Allied Health at NorQuest College.

Erin Turnell is a Recreation Therapist with twenty years of experience working in a variety of health settings. She is currently an instructor in the Therapeutic Recreation Program at NorQuest College. She is passionate about the profession of therapeutic recreation and enjoys teaching the future generation of recreation therapists.

5-B: Madiera Room Title of Session: The Assessment and Management of Chronic Pain Session Description: This session aims to provide education on the neurophysiology of pain and will explore how to assess and treat chronic pain conditions. There will be a practical component where participants will have the opportunity to practice self-management techniques such as mindfulness and diaphragmatic breathing.

Speaker Bios: Whitney Storey (Occupational Therapist) BA, MScOT, PgcPain Whitney has an undergraduate degree in applied psychology and a Master’s of Science in Occupational Therapy. She works in vocational rehabilitation with clients who have chronic pain. She completed her post graduate certificate in chronic pain management through the University of Alberta in June of this year.

Vanessa Peacock (Physical Therapist) MSc PT, BSc, BA Vanessa Peacock has her undergraduate in nutritional medicine and 6 years’ experience as a nutritionist working with clients with chronic pain.

She taught nutrition for 4 years at a private career college in British Columbia as well as designed several workshops for clients with high socioeconomic psychosocial barriers. She has been a physiotherapist for just under two years working with clients experiencing chronic pain in vocational rehabilitation.

5-C: Piersporter Room Title of Session: Spiritual History Taking by Recreation Therapists: Building Capacity for Spiritual Health Care in Alberta Session Description: The spiritual health landscape of Alberta depicts diversity in beliefs, practices and cultures. Spiritual health impacts whole person care and is fundamental in all service settings and throughout all phases of a health care journey. Recreation therapists play an important role in interdisciplinary, person-centred spiritual health care. This session will build capacity for spiritual health care through participant engagement with the evidence-based FICA Spiritual History Tool and reflection on core and advanced competencies to enhance spiritual health care practice within recreation therapy.

Speaker Bio’s: Jane Papenhuyzen is the Recreation Therapy Senior Practice Lead with Allied Health Professional Practice and Education and the Calgary Zone Professional Practice Lead for Recreation Therapy. As a practice lead and 5 year ATRA Vice President, Jane has led work in health legislation, collaborative practice and competencies for recreation therapists in Alberta. Jane has a Master of Science, Health Promotion Studies from the University of Alberta. Jane has worked clinically across service sectors including geriatric psychiatry and community rehabilitation. Awards include 2012 Professional of the Year, Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association and the 2010 Distinguished Service Award, Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association.

Dr. Zinia Pritchard is AHS Provincial Senior Practice Lead for Spiritual Care and Associate Faculty and Academic Senate Member, St. Stephen’s College, U of A Campus. Zinia is a certified spiritual care practitioner and seasoned palliative practitioner with a track history in spirituality education in medical education. She is dedicated to building capacity for interdisciplinary spiritual health care.

1:30-2:30 pm Breakout Session #6 6-A: Beverly Hill Room Title of Session: Engaged and safe group work: keys to establishing and maintaining helpful group dynamics.

Session Description: This session is for recreational therapists interested in facilitating safe therapeutic processes in their groups. An overview of research on helpful and harmful group dynamics will be provided along with audience participation in dyads and small groups. Participants will further learn about self-care and safety as group leaders Speaker’s Bio: Dr. Stu Hoover is a registered psychologist in Edmonton, focusing on life transitions (career, family/ relationships, loss) and on recovery (trauma, depression, stress/anxiety, isolation). He holds degrees in mathematics, economics, and counselling psychology. He has previously worked as a trading analyst in the Alberta energy sector, and understands how downturns affect workers and their 20

families. Dr. Hoover works with mature teens and adults, and has experience making therapy a “port of entry” for clients to engage. He has 8 years’ experience working with veterans and first responders across Canada. Dr. Hoover also specializes in group psychotherapy and leads groups focused on safety and interpersonal learning using process interventions as well as the Psychodrama-informed intervention called Therapeutic Enactment .

6-B: Madiera Room Title of Session:Role of Leisure Education in Community Integration: Exploring a Transition Model Session Description:This session will look at community integration/reintegration from the perspective of both a theory and a process. Supported transition for community integration goes beyond the physical presence of individuals in their community to include a broader definition whereby individuals live, participate and socialize within their community. This session will explore current evidence that supports leisure education as part of the community transition process for individuals who have experienced a stroke and include discussion of a community transition model.

A case study will be presented to identify the successes and challenges of community reintegration following a stroke. An overview of the leisure education program that was implemented as part of this individual’s treatment plan will also be reviewed.

Speakers Bio’s:

Kari Medd graduated from the University of Alberta in 1999 with a degree in Recreation Administration and a focus in special populations. She is currently a Recreation Therapist II at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital where her role includes Clinical Educator with the Interdisciplinary Student Services program, coordinating student placements, and a member of the Recreation Therapy Provincial Professional Practice Council. Her clinical role includes working with individuals who have experienced a Brain Injury/ Stroke. Kari has been involved with ATRA in varying roles over the years including Education Liaison, President and Chairing the Continued Competency PAC and Symposium Education Committee. She has been the recipient of the ATRA Distinguished Service award, Volunteer of the Year award as well the CTRA Professional of the Year. Kari enjoys an active outdoor leisure lifestyle including biking, paddle boarding and snowboarding.

Bobbi-Jo Atchison With over 12 years of experience, Bobbi-Jo Atchison has dedicated her career to supporting people experiencing disability and chronic conditions to get active in their own communities. As a University of Alberta lecturer and someone who has provided educational workshops for fitness and recreation providers across Alberta, Bobbi-Jo brings a diverse understanding to the field of fitness and physical activity. Bobbi-Jo is also the owner and founder of Equality Fitness & Recreation, an organization that strives to provide equal access to adapted fitness, physical activity, recreation, sport, and wellness services to all individuals. Bobbi-Jo Atchison has a Bachelors and Master’s Degree specializing in Adapted Physical Activity from the University of Alberta. She is certified through the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP) as a Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) and is a Recreation Therapist with ATRA. 21

6-C: Piesporter Room Title of Session: Ambient Activity Technology: A Journey to Engagement A Research Evaluation: The impact of ABBY, a personalized activity technology, on people living with dementia in long-term care Session Description: Ambient Activity Technologies has developed ABBY, a non-pharmaceutical, activity-based approach to managing responsive behaviours in persons living with moderate to severe levels of dementia. ABBY augments the care environment by providing ambient (available in the environment for easy access) activity experiences available to residents on a 24/7 basis, and provides opportunities for residents to engage in, and interact with personalized experiences (touches, music and sounds, personal images) familiar and meaningful to the resident, to attain a state of calm. In a study conducted by the University of Toronto, the impact of ABBY was assessed in six long-term care homes across Ontario on a variety of outcomes, including resident aggression, agitation, depression, and cognition, as well as staff strain and family/visitor satisfaction. Participants will learn how this unique activity-based approach has made an impact in these trial locations, and techniques for successful deployment.

Speaker Bio: Marc Kanik is President and Managing Director of Keebee Play, a Canadian company and global leader in designing and producing high quality play equipment. Keebee is now employing their expertise with therapeutic engagement-tools to design Ambient Activity Technologies for individuals with dementia living in long-term care environments.

2:45-3:45 pm: Beverly Hill Ballroom CLOSING KEYNOTE Title of Session: Optimizing our Recreation Therapist Role in Alberta Session Description: The passion and excitement for the optimized role of recreation therapy becomes ignited at symposiums such as ATRA 2018 “On the Right TRack.” We see, hear, analyse and evaluate innovations in person-centred care, quality improvement and advancing recreation therapy practice. We are energized in our strengths-based approach and integral role within our care teams. We are empowered that we are the best people to enhance the wellbeing and quality of life of our clients. How do we transfer this great knowledge once back in the workplace? Recreation therapists are constantly hitting walls as they educate, promote and advocate for role clarity, growth and optimization. This session will highlight where we are leading the way and how we can best promote, grow and optimize our role. We will move the conversation from ‘defend to educate.’
