PROJECT BRIEF

The museum should be a place of memory and a reminder of the situation during the COVID - 19 pandemic.

The intervention aims to encompass the feelings of Isolation, discomfort, tragedy, confusion, learning and hope. The main intention of the museum is to potray how this difficult situation in the world had become an important part in connectiong the past and the present. The intention is to create a museum in perspective of a common man and to show how the lives of healthcare workers and patients are affected by the pandemic.

The space tries to resonate the feeling of what the people went through in these times mentally and physically and the idea of the project revolves around creating the feeling of isolation through courtyards.

PROJECT BRIEF

‘We have to change our lifestyles’ seems to be the reverberating mantra across the globe in the recent past, with most of us trying to implement it, being confined to our dwelling in the middle of the pandemic.

But, now that most of us are out in the open, we often try and look at the idea of public space around us through the speculative lens of ‘what if’. Here lies the agenda of negotiating the idea of work-play. What are the spatial notions of work and play, and how do we position the idea of blurring their boundaries and look at the two typologies with a renewed interest?

The project is an area of duality with work and play ingrained in the context itself.

PROJECT BRIEF

The overall objective of the studio is to explore design from the stand point of ‘Interior Architecture’ where the built and the contained are symbiotic and mutually referential. While addressing the aspects of space-making in an interior environment, the studio will also articulate the boundaries that defines the key spaces along with all the free-flowing spaces that holds these key spaces together. How does the new way of life brought on by site take into account nostalgia [nostalgia / noun a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past.]? There is a lack of distinction between the virtual and the real, how do memories, craft and culture begin to alter lived space to cater to the user?

Keonjhar in Orissa has an Agro and Mining based economy and has a very rich flora and fauna. People depend upon the forests and forest products. The intervention is an effort to educate and make the agriculture practises more efficient and to protect the existing flora of the place.

OBJECTIVES

1. To understand the subject of Architecture as an integrated field which works in tandem with Technology, Design, Economy, Ecology, Geography and Sociology etc.

2. To rethink architecture as a man-made ecosystem, which is self-contained and sustainable.

3. To be able to identify and Augment the right set of knowledge kit that will steer the approach to the brief in a strong direction.

The project is to re-design the exiting Johnson market of Bangalore retaining it’s past functions and cultural value to fit into the modern context.

The MMBC studio focusses on learning and draughting of contruction details including the structure of the building, interiors, furniture and service systems. It also includes the learning of new and alternate building materials and technologies.

A SPACE FRAME is a rigid, lightweight, truss-like structure constructed from interlocking struts in a geometric pattern. Space frames can be used to span large areas with few interior supports. Like the truss, a space frame is strong because of the inherent rigidity of the triangle; flexing loads (bending moments) are transmitted as tension and compression loads along the length of each strut.

Building envelope / facades finished with glass such as windows or glass used extensively to wrap up the building perimeter is called structural glazing. The function of the glazing is to provide safety and weather projection of the occupants.

Types of structural glazing systems

· Skylight glazing and roofs

Glass curtain walls are lightweight aluminum-framed facades housing glass or metal panels. These glazing systems don’t support the weight of a roof or floor. Instead, gravity loads and wind resistance transfer from the surface to the building’s floor line.

Curtain walls are often part of a building envelope or comprises one part of a wall system. Each glazing system requires careful integration with other adjacent structural elements such as wall claddings, roofs, and wall details. Curtain wall systems range from standard prefabricated systems to specialized custom wall units. Increased costs often come with additional customization and larger sizing.

Curtain walls can adopt a 'stick' system, or can be unitised:

· Stick systems are installed piece by piece on site, with the glazing inserted into the frame from the inside or the outside depending on access conditions.

· Unitised systems are pre-fabricated in modules off-site and delivered in panels. Unitised systems are better able to exploit the benefits of factory condition manufacturing and quality control and require lower installation time on site.

HIGH RISE BUILDINGS - ELECTIVE WORK

The intervention is for a silk processing industry in a high-rise building with the facade inspired from the idea that the building is eaten up by a silkworm from various sides.

ALTERNATE BUILDING MATERIALS - ELECTIVE WORK

The intervention is a cultural center in Singhana, Rajasthan. The design explores alternate building materials or non-conventional materials which suit the climatic conditions, culture & programs

•A study of regular houses was conducted to understand space division and elements vernacular to the town The houses were divided into public and private spaces

The public spaces were for business and work related interactions, mainly used by men

•The private spaces included household function related spaces used by women

They scarcely came out in public and interacted

•Since our facility is for public we found a new way to layer the spaces- based on accessPublic, Admin and Users

Other features of the houses such as varying plinth levels, courtyards, shadow play can be seen

MATERIALS CHOSEN

Roof – Coconut fiber reinforced concrete

Walls – Hollow concrete blocks with coconut fiber fill for insulation

Flooring – Kota stone

Door – Wooden

The materials chosen are widely available in the location of the site as it is located in the surrounding of many Hindu temples where coconuts are offered widely and the fiber that is produced can be turned into an alternate building materials in the project. Concrete design mix ratio – 1:3:3
