DESTINATION: LA WATERFRONT DESTINATION: SAN PEDRO

By Theresa Adams-Lopez, Director of Community Relations, Port of Los Angeles

Over the past several years, those of us who live here in San Pedro have had a very unique vantage point to see the transformation of our waterfront. We have witnessed parking lots and vacant industrial spaces transformed into beautiful public spaces and visitor attractions. We have also seen a host of new organizations — like AltaSea, CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles and PortTechLA — breathe new prospects for economic development and out-of-area interest in our communities. For “the locals,” the change has been wonderful. But what is really gratifying is seeing the rest of the region catch on to this gem and come down to experience the LA Waterfront firsthand. The past 18 months has seen a huge jump in events along the LA Waterfront – from the Red Bull Global Rallycross these past two Septembers, to the Tall Ships Festival, to the recent Horton’s Hayride music festival and a growing lineup of other events. With the grand opening of the Downtown Harbor in 2014, the LA Waterfront has also gained an excellent new venue for public events. There have been many events here already, from the Port-sponsored Lunar New Year Festival, to the privately-sponsored display of the Yacht America. And the momentum has just begun! The upcoming opening of Brouwerij West

6

at CRAFTED and 2016 event roster that’s bigger than ever will create even more visitor opportunities — and we’re excited for the possibilities. Redevelopment of the Ports O’ Call area is moving forward and will ultimately be the cherry on the sundae of the San Pedro-side of the LA Waterfront. But as we all know, before we get to the dessert we need the strength of a good meal. For the LA Waterfront, construction will be

the meal on our plate for the next several years. The Sampson Way-7th Street Intersection Improvements will begin soon, as well as Town Square construction adjacent to the Maritime Museum and a new Ports O’ Call Promenade. But these infrastructure improvements aren’t all that’s in store and, rest assured, we’ll continue to have LA Waterfront events to reintroduce Southern California to the LA Harbor.

The Port’s Public Access Investment program, approved by the Board of Harbor Commissioners in the spring of 2015, provides a framework for sustainable waterfront project funding over the coming years. The plan proposes allocation of approximately $400 million over the next decade, roughly 10 percent of the Harbor Department’s annual operating income from the latest available fiscal year being allocated for non-cargo, public access projects. Based on community input, the following six projects have been identified by the Port and community to be incorporated into the Port Capital Improvement Program’s 10-year planning horizon: n Sampson Way and 7th Street intersection improvements to flow traffic

into the Ports O’ Call area

n A Town Square at 6th Street, further connecting the waterfront

and downtown San Pedro

n Ports O’ Call Promenade and parking n A Wilmington Waterfront Promenade west of Banning’s Landing n Harry Bridges Blvd. beautification between Island Avenue and Avalon Blvd. n Wilmington Waterfront Pedestrian bridge

These are exciting times for our LA Harbor communities. Let’s enjoy the view as the LA Waterfront continues to evolve! www.sanpedrochamber.com | San Pedro Chamber of Commerce

Natural & Historic Landmarks Whether you enjoy nautical adventures, exploring nature, visiting museums or admiring art, San Pedro has sites for you to see.

The LA Waterfront is sure to satisfy history and nautical enthusiasts alike. There’s the majesty of the port, the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, the Mueller House, the SS Lane Victory and the Battleship IOWA – proud winner of the 2013 winner of the SSHSA museum ship of the year and the West Coast’s only Battleship open to the public. Nature lovers can explore San Pedro’s picturesque coast, from the top of its towering bluffs to the depth of its colorful tide pools. There are lush grounds to stroll at Averill Park and sunrises to swoon over from Angels Gate Park, home to the majestic Korean Friendship Bell. Younger visitors will especially enjoy the Cabrillo Aquarium, home to the annual grunion run. Feeling adventurous? Hop a boat at 22nd Street Landing and enjoy the Pt. Fermin lighthouse and other stunning views from the oceanic perspective. As the sun sets, stop by the fantastic Fanfare Fountains for dancing waters that sparkle as bright as the stars overhead.

Angels Gate Lighthouse, the Gateway to the Port of Los Angeles

San Pedro’s signal to returning seafarers is the Romanesque tower that has cast its light since 1913 from the harbor’s twomile-long rock breakwater. Vessels pass the 73-foot-high Angels Gate Lighthouse as they enter or leave San Pedro Bay and the Port of Los Angeles – at 7,300 acres with 23 miles of waterfront, the largest man-made port in the U.S. For an elevated view of the lighthouse, the Bay’s marinas and the Port’s docks, cranes and main Channel, try the telescope turnout on South Gaffey near 36th Street. Enjoy a closer look from Cabrillo Beach, bayside and pier. You’ll soon discover that “portside” San Pedro is beautifully situated for a peek at the dramatic spectacle of global commerce.

DESTINATION: SAN PEDRO The venerable San Pedro Arts Association was formed in 1936 by a small group of local artists to bring together creative people with similar interests within the Harbor area community, and to provide a focal point for those with such interests to work together, learn, and exhibit their work. Today, the association continues in that role as a forum for networking, information sharing, promotion, peer access and council, professional assistance, art education as well as career and marketing opportunities for the artists living in the harbor area and beyond. The goal of enriching the community through art is one that continues today and will continue well into the future, with more than 30 artists and located at CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles – and events like the annual All Grades Student Art Competition. First Thursday Art Walks, a longstanding San Pedro tradition, offers the public a chance to visit working artists in their studios with live music, street performers and food trucks. Docent led tours of the Arts District, begin at the Chamber offices at 390 West 7th Street at 6:30pm on the “First Thursday” of every month.

CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles has transformed the vintage WWII-era Port of Los Angeles Warehouses 9 & 10 into a new type of marketplace, where visitors can interact with the artisans as they make and sell their wares. CRAFTED’s Warehouse 10 is the permanent retail home of more than 100 artists, including jewelers, leatherworkers, furniture makers, photographers, fine artists and more. Frequent shoppers can connect with favorite artists for repeat purchases or custom work while still finding fresh, new products in the vibrant patchwork of artist stalls. In addition to being the LA Waterfront’s handmade shopping destination, CRAFTED has also become a hub for learning from local makers. Artists at CRAFTED lead a range of classes, including painting, jewelry-making and basic upholstery. CRAFTED’s Creation Station also provides visitors of all ages a chance to make something they can take home, with unique craft demonstrations offered every weekend. The marketplace has also become popular with visiting artisans like the California Carver’s Guild, who often share their knowledge at no cost, simply to encourage more people to try their hand at arts and crafts. Weekly live music and occasional special events like Small Business Saturday add to the momentum building in the market. Moving into 2016, CRAFTED is seeking to grow as an arts & crafts marketplace with the inclusion of local craft brewer Brouwerij West in its first permanent home, and is also planning to build a shared commercial kitchen and market space for food artisans. To stay updated on events and developments at the market, visit www.craftedportla. com, sign up for the newsletter and like CRAFTED on Facebook.

COMMUNITY We’re fortunate to have four law enforcement organizations actively working in a collaborative way to ensure the safety of our community – along with state-of-the-art fire and emergency departments. In addition to our Los Angeles city services, the San Pedro Historic Waterfront Business Improvement District (PBID) provides public safety ambassadors, street sweeping, sidewalk and alley cleaning, graffiti removal, tree trimming and business development. Formed in 2008, the PBID’s goal is to provide a district that fosters business development, expanded retail sales, ownership of residential real estate and tourism in a clean, safe environment for Downtown San Pedro.

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Harbor Division

Located at the busiest port in the Western Hemisphere, the Harbor Community Police Station serves as a beacon, ensuring safe passage for all those who live and work in the area. Dedicated in April 2009 on John S. Gibson Boulevard, the new facility is visible from the 110 Freeway at Channel Street. Housed there are a range of public servants including many community volunteers as well as the officers whose mission it is “to help make this community a safer place to live and work.”

Los Angeles Port Police

One of few police forces in the nation exclusively dedicated to 24-hour port activities, the Port Police are responsible for patrol and surveillance of the Port and neighboring harbor-area communities. Highly regarded

San Pedro, a safe, clean community among specialized law enforcement agencies, Port Police officers patrol the waterfront, landside as well on the water, by boat, helicopter, automobile and bicycle. These California peace officers enforce federal, state and local public safety statutes in addition to environmental and maritime safety regulations.

Property-Owners Business Improvement District (PBID) Security Ambassadors

A key PBID service is to provide high profile ambassadors, who are also problem solvers for San Pedro’s Historic Waterfront District .These Security Ambassadors patrol the District and serve as liaisons among merchants and restaurants, as well as entertainment and arts venues. The Ambassadors work closely with local law enforcement agencies to guarantee a welcoming and safe environment for visitors, shoppers and residents alike.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department

Under the auspices of the County of Los Angeles, the Sheriff’s Department provides law enforcement services to a small, unincorporated area in San Pedro. In addition to specialized services, such as the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation, International Liaison and Employee Support Services, the Department is divided into three patrol divisions with officers constantly on the alert to ensure public safety.

Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD)

Fueled by a diverse mix of small and family-owned businesses, professional services and our integration with the major economic engine that is the Port of Los Angeles, San Pedro provides a vital business venue for established industry and the local entrepreneur alike. San Pedro is home to professional practices of all types as well as a range of business enterprises, such as contracting and landscaping services; consulting, banking and accounting; support services such

as computer sales and support, marketing, print shops and more. Our small-town character ensures that personal touch, an environment of familiarity that has all but disappeared from other major cities. The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation identifies “the containerized cargo traffic through the San Pedro Ports as the best indicator of international trade expansion. As a result, San Pedro is a prime location for companies participating in international trade activity. The combined efforts of the City of Los Angeles, the Port and San Pedro itself to make a significant investment in the waterfront is bringing commercial and recreational

development along the eight-mile corridor from the Vincent Thomas Bridge to Cabrillo Beach (for in-depth discussion, see the articles at the beginning of this publication). These endeavors, designed to create an entertainment draw for residents and visitors, create a virtually limitless opportunity for entrepreneurs and corporate investors.

J Trani’s: 90 Years Old and Still Going Strong! On August 25, 1913, Filippo Trani arrived in the US, at Ellis Island with $20 in his pocket. The 18 year old from the island of Ischia, off the central coast of Italy, headed west and settled in San Pedro. After years of farming, fishing and hard work, he opened the Majestic Café in 1925. In 1937, Filippo’s 13 year old son Jim joined him at the Majestic Café in what would become the Trani culinary tradition; passed from father to son, for over 75 years. The fourth generation of Trani’s carries on the tradition, at J Trani’s, as 2015 marked the 90th anniversary of San Pedro’s beloved family restaurant. 548 W. 9th Street, San Pedro

San Pedro Fish Market: 60 Years of Sublime Seafood! Mackey Ungaro originally opened Vista Seafood and charged his teenage son, Henry, and nephew, Tommy Amalfitano, with operations. Mackey purchased Norm’s Landing Fish Market in the late ‘60s on San Pedro’s waterfront section to replace Vista Seafood. Norm’s Landing was demolished in 1981, but the Ungaro and Amalfitano families continued to sell fresh seafood and shrimp cocktails during the construction phase of what would eventually become today’s San Pedro Fish Market and Restaurant. The new location opened in 1983 and included a full-service restaurant and outdoor patio on the water with seating for nearly 400. The place became a big hit and its popularity spurred more growth including additions to the patio, new menu items, a banquet room, and the creation of the World Famous Shrimp Tray. Today, San Pedro Fish Market and Restaurant serves more than 10,000 guests a week and offers seating for 2,000! It is the largest fish market/restaurant in Southern California and one of the waterfront’s most popular destinations! 1190 Nagoya Way, San Pedro The Admiral Risty: A Half Century of Landmark Dining! On October 10, 1966, Ralph M. Wood Jr. realized a dream when he opened The Admiral Risty Restaurant, one of the first dinner houses on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Over the years, the restaurant has undergone many changes to the menu, the interior and exterior, but the quality and consistency of food, the unsurpassed service, the romantic ambience and beautiful ocean view have remained steadfast. Following Wood’s passing in January 2015, co-owner Wayne Judah and his wife, Jan, purchased the Wood’s interest in the restaurant. Looking ahead to The Admiral Risty’s historic 50th Anniversary in 2016, Judah shared that plans are underway for a 50-week celebration as warranted by this extraordinary achievement in the hospitality industry. 31250 Palos Verdes Dr., Rancho Palos Verdes www.sanpedrochamber.com | San Pedro Chamber of Commerce

22nd Street Landing: 22nd Celebrates 25th! World War II hero Frank Hall served as a bomber pilot flying B-17’s over Germany. He was shot down three times and miraculously escaped from the Germans each time. After the war he ran a fishing boat called Sharpshooter and in 1963 he bought the original Skipper’s 22nd Street Landing, which was founded in 1938. He operated Skipper’s out of two trailers next to a fastfood stand called Googie’s. Both businesses shared a common dirt parking lot and were very successful in spite of the simple setting. In 1986, the Port of Los Angeles informed Frank that in order for him to renew his lease with them, he would have to construct a 16,000-square-foot commercial building on the site, which would include a large restaurant on the top floor. Dick Mannila, a Vietnam veteran who was medically retired from the Marine Corp, was hired to build the project. Dick had successfully built restaurants around the nation as a partner in Borel Restaurant Corporation, which eventually grew to 31 restaurants doing business as The Rusty Scupper, Borel’s and Nightwatch. The restaurants were sold to Nestle Food Company in 1978. In 1989, the present building was completed and 22nd Street Landing Seafood Grill and Bar opened for business on June 5, 1990. 141 W. 22nd Street, San Pedro

The Whale and Ale: 20 Years of Pub Perfection! Adela Silber developed the plan to restart The Whale & Ale in San Pedro. Adela’s family have lived in San Pedro for three generations, and she knew of the Pub & Restaurant as a previously thriving concern, – operated by Grand House Management during the period 1988 to 1991. It had closed in July 1991, so she and husband Andrew negotiated to lease the building from its previous operator, Marylyn Ginsburg. This culminated in their re-opening the Whale & Ale’s doors on December 4 1995. Celebrating 20 years in business, Andrew continues to thrive as owner of the much-acclaimed English Victorian-style restaurant and pub. 327 W. 7th Street, San Pedro

“The S Fish M an Pedro ar Has a H ket Family id in Wilm den Gem ington”

The town boasts one of the largest selections of independently-owned, high-quality restaurant clusters in Southern California. Various travel bureaus and civic planning organizations, such as the Urban Land Institute, praise San Pedro’s great ethnic restaurants as a premiere attraction for the region. As an example, on just a short stroll through downtown San Pedro a visitor can sample cuisine from Italy, Great Britain, Mexico, Croatia, Japan, Greece and more. Another must-stop dining location for visitors to the port is the waterfront itself. San Pedro offers the unique dining experience of being nestled against a working harbor where guests can reach out and almost touch the majestic cruise ships, cargo ships, tugboats, fishing boats, and fire boats that glide past just yards away from their dining table. With its rich old world multi-ethnic influences, cooking is an art that many San Pedrans take great pride in – and being a port town, seafood is a specialty. The waterfront is home to great fish markets where visitors can find fresh seafood that the local fishing fleet brings in on a daily basis. But fresh fish is only the start; downtown San Pedro has a wonderful Friday farmer’s market, there are great family owned butchers and poultry shops that offer prime cuts of meat, bakeries with pastries from around the world, wine shops offering spectacular vintages, and a micro-brew restaurant that makes fresh crafted beers right on the premises. Jack Baric owns Baric Media Entertainment and has been a member of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce since 2005.

One More Thought

By Caroline Brady, Executive Director of the Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

To some, an aquarium might be little more than a place to watch pretty fish swimming around in tanks – a place you visit once or twice then maybe swing by with outof-town visitors. San Pedro is lucky. Our aquarium – Cabrillo Marine Aquarium – is not just a tourist attraction. For 80 years now, CMA has been a place where everyone feels welcome to explore; where it’s OK to ask questions; and yes, a place where you can let go and have fun. Ask almost anyone in San Pedro and they have a Cabrillo Marine Aquarium story – the time they did the Grunion dance with John Olguin; went on a school field trip to the tide pools; spent a summer as a docent; or went to their first Little Squirt class. Not only that – Cabrillo Marine Aquarium reflects the community’s values. We respect the ocean and its creatures. We believe in conservation and science education. We care about making our world a better place. Everyone’s invited in to play a part – with most programs offered for free or at very little cost. We invite you to come to CMA for the stimulating lectures on hot topics such as the return of the Great White Shark, climate change or aquaculture. Learn how to compost during Earth Day; build a sand sculpture at Whale Fiesta; practice your casting skills at the Autumn Sea Fair. Love to dress up and dance? Come to our Grand Grunion Gala! Like moonlit walks on the beach? Come to a late-night grunion run. Maybe you’re incorporating more seafood into your diet – our annual Sustainable Seafood Expo can help you choose the right fish for your dish – one that’s not only good for your body, but good for the marine environment as well. It’s a formula that works – CMA draws in 300,000 visitors a year, making us the top attraction on the LA Waterfront. And we know those visitors stick around to shop, dine and fill up their gas tanks. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, with special funding from the Port of Los Angeles. But each year, Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium must raise the extra funding necessary to offer all of the special programs that keep people coming back for more. For that, we are grateful to our Friends (members), foundations and our Corporate Circle, who provide much of that support. If you hold CMA close to your heart, we invite you to come back. To us, you’re not just a Friend, you’re family.
