Message from the Chamber President

Welcome from the Executive Director

As your president, I am excited to report that the growth in Buellton continues to move in a very positive direction as the economy improves. We now have the Crossroads Shopping Center at the corner of McMurray Road and Hwy 246 which houses Tractor Supply Co., hair and nail salons, Starbucks, and a variety of fast casual restaurants. The Vineyard Village will offer 155 condo/townhome style units along with a small park.

On the hotel front, is the new 99 room Hampton Inn on McMurray Road, and a complete renovation of the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott and the Sideways Inn (formerly the Days Inn), which is also under new ownership. Flying Flags RV Resort continues to make upgrades to cater to the camping and “glamping� audience. These added rooms and renovations elevate the lodging options in Buellton and create revenue for the City of Buellton.

Industrial Way has become a destination for locals and visitors alike, specializing in craft beer, distilled spirits, wine, and farm to table cuisine. New proposed projects will supply much needed winery, spirits, and general industrial uses that are needed due to a low vacancy rate.

The Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau stepped up their effort with their task of Economic Development by attending various conventions for the International Council of Shopping Centers(ICSC) seeking out retail tenants to fill the vacancies throughout Buellton. Buellton is recognized as a tourist and viable retail location with our marketing efforts throughout the nation due to its prime location on Hwy 101 and Hwy 246. The City continues to work on the Avenue of Flags Specific Plan and we look forward to seeing the outcome of how it will evolve.

The Chamber continues to support and encourage new businesses and welcome them as they locate here.

HISTORY

Buellton came into being in January 1918 when a newly built bridge was opened across the Santa Ynez River. This bridge led to an intersection with the “Missions Highway” and would become the newly established route of the Coast Highway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The route was later numbered Highway 101 as we know it today and the Missions Highway then became Highway 246.

The name Buellton was gleaned from the family name of Rufus Thompson Buell upon whose land the town was established.

Rufus “R.T.” Buell came to California from Vermont in search of gold in 1849. He eventually made his way down the coast after his plans for striking it rich in the gold fields did not pan out.

Buellton continues to welcome travelers heading north and south along the state highway 101 and has become a routine stop for travelers from all over the world. Situated in the Santa Rita Hills, Buellton is a wine destination and more recently has become a craft beer destination as well.

Buellton incorporated as a City in 1992 and is home to close to 5,000 residents today. Buellton is a lively town offering a thriving social and economic climate of growth and an outstanding quality of life.

LIFE HERE LIFESTYLE

Buellton promotes a healthy living style. With the variety of parks and recreational activities, we make it possible for all ages to stay active. The Buellton Recreation Center is located on the Jonata Middle School campus and is a joint venture between the City of Buellton and the Buellton Union School District. The Rec Center offers a variety of services and amenities including; a full size gymnasium, an exercise/weight room, activity/meeting rooms and a full kitchen. These rooms are also available to rent for meetings and events. In addition to the facility, the Rec Center also offers classes, trips, camps, and other programs for kids and adults.

Enjoy Buellton outdoors at one of our many parks. River View Park is located on the southwest side of town and is the largest of parks in Buellton. The park boasts a walking trail, playground areas, BBQ areas, basketball courts, large grass area, the Santa Ynez Valley Botanical Garden, and a gazebo for entertainment. Oak Valley Park is located near the campus for the Oak Valley Elementary School and although smaller in scale, it still offers an area for children to play on the playground as the adults BBQ in the picnic areas provided. PAWS Dog Park is located on Dawn Drive and welcomes four-legged friends of any size. The park consists of two large fenced in areas, one for small dogs and one for the larger dogs. Treat your pup to a fun, safe, off-leash park and let them get the exercise and socializing they need.

GOLF

Buellton Union School District is a K-8 district with an enrollment of approximately 700 students. It is currently served by two schools. Oak

Zaca Creek Golf Course is a municipal 9-hole course, great for any level of golfer. This course is open daily to the public

MUSEUMS The Buellton Historical Society is located upstairs in Pea Soup Andersen’s Restaurant. You may go through at your leisure and get a glimpse into the history of Buellton and how it came to be. The museum is open during restaurant hours.

The Mendenhall Museum is located on Zaca Street in Buellton and holds one of the largest petroliana collections including gasoline pumps, globes, and porcelain gas, oil, & road signs. This private collection, owned by the Mendenhall family, also includes race cars, memorabilia, license plates, gas & oil items, and other miscellaneous antiques. It is open to the public by appointment for individuals and clubs. The Mendenhall Museum is also home to the Dry Lakes Racing Hall of Fame and is available for rent for any occasion.

EDUCATION

Valley Elementary includes grades K-5, while Jonata Middle School serves students in grades 6-8. Both are rural, neighborhood schools located within a few blocks of one another. The Buellton Union School District has high expectations and offers a wide range of programs and services for students. Some examples of these programs are counseling, speech and resource services, help for English learners, Drug Free Club, after school tutoring and after school sports and activities.

DINING Buellton loves food and we take pride in our broad selection of dining options. Some of the Valley’s best dining can be found right here in Buellton. From breakfast to dinner, fast food to sushi, and drive thru to sit down, we have it all.

Al Fresco Picnic is a local, family-owned company who are passionate about food and wine. They offer picnic lunches for any occasion and prepare their dishes with natural, locally sourced, organic food. Terravant the Winery Restaurant offers a unique dining and wine tasting experience. This custom crush facility, not only produces the wine, but offers a taste of over 50 wines in their neoclassic modern industrial warehouse setting. Mother Hubbard’s Restaurant provides a down-home friendly dining experience for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Providing their guests with homemade options, chef specials, and locavore dinners, Mother Hubbard’s knows how to satisfy the appetite. It’s family friendly, kid friendly, and budget friendly. Treat yourself and your family to Mother Hubbard’s and go where the locals go.

The Hitching Post II Restaurant, known for their open fire BBQ over red oak, has people lined out the door. Masters of the Santa Maria Style BBQ, they also serve items such as smoked duck breast, home-made soups and pastries. You might even agree with the LA Times, that recognized the Hitching Post II for the “best” French fries in Southern California. Folks travel from all over to dine and taste wine at the Hitching Post II, especially since being featured in the movie “Sideways”. FARM SUPPLY COMPANY…Deeply Rooted on the Central Coast.

Farm Supply has grown and evolved with the Central Coast. The company was established in 1950 as an agricultural cooperative with its primary duty to serve the agricultural community, specifically the dairy farmers. Farm Supply is still serving its farming and ranching community but also the homeowner, pet owner, backyard gardener, horse enthusiast and contractor. They offer an irrigation department with knowledgeable staff that can assist anyone from contractors setting up for their next big job to the homeowner who wants to make the weekend watering a little easier. Each store features a variety of seasonal color in the form of flowers and vegetables with a full garden center at the San Luis Obispo store.

There is always a variety of pet food from locally owned Canidae, and other quality foods such as Blue Buffalo, Nutri Source and Taste of the Wild.

Coast! First located at the intersection of Higuera Street and Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo, Farm Bureau purchased and built Farm Supply’s San Luis Obispo second location on Tank Farm Road after the original building burned down in 1965.

They also purchased a pump company in 1965 and established a pump department. The Pump Department continues to operate out of both the Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo locations.

In July 1977, Farm Supply opened in Paso Robles. Farm Supply headed west to Morro Bay in 1988, but closed the store in 1998 due to limitations of the facility and continued growth. In January 1989, Farm Supply expanded to Santa Maria. The year was 2004 and proved to be a big year for Farm Supply. In January, Farm Supply purchased the E. C. Loomis & Son Feed Store in Arroyo Grande. In July, the San Luis Obispo store moved right down the street from the building owned by Farm Bureau and leased since 1965 to a new building owned by the members of Farm Supply. In November, the Arroyo Grande store was moved from its original Branch Street location to El Camino Real. In 2007, Farm Supply purchased the Roemer’s business and moved our Santa Maria location to the Roemer’s facility on Broadway. In

2011, their fifth location opened in Buellton and they acquired Gracian Ag. Three weeks later the Paso Robles store relocated to Ramada Drive.

The agricultural cooperative is still the heart of Farm Supply with 2,600 members strong and growing. Anyone who is an agricultural producer can join for just one dollar and share in the profits.

However, one does not have to be a member to shop with Farm Supply.

the Love Wine You’re With!

B U E L LTO N A N D T H E S U R RO U N D I N G SANTA YNEZ VALLEY have become synonymous with some of the finest wines in the world. The Sta. Rita Hills viticultural appellation is a relatively small appellation of approximately 100 square miles situated between the towns of Buellton and Lompoc. The idyllic climate and unique east-west coastal valleys allow for some of California’s most exciting Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and other varietals to be grown and produced here.

The Sta. Rita Hills is home to more than 30 wineries and vineyards where one can find the fruits and labor of the Cassara family vineyards.

Casa Cassara Winery & Vineyard is best known for Pinot Noir and Syrah, and is a father/son team producing award-winning wines. With their outstanding sense of humor, the Cassara family is proud to serve new favorites such as; Tall, Dark & Handsome and Old Hoe Merlot. Casa Cassara opened up a tasting room in Solvang where one may try a sip or two of their fine selection of wines.

Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines is the creation of Gray Hartley and Frank Ostini. Their love of winemaking began in the late 70s and what was once a hobby has become a highly acclaimed enterprise. In the early 80s the pair discovered Pinot Noir grapes and that has been their main focus ever since. With 10 selections of Pinot Noir, Ostini and Hartley also produce Syrah, Merlot, and a Merlot-Cabernet Franc blend. In 2004, the movie “Sideways”, featured the Hitching Post II Restaurant and Hitching Post Wines, which allowed for great exposure and for the wines to gain in popularity. To this day, folks stop by the restaurant to enjoy these award-winning wines, delight in a wonderful meal prepared over a red oak flame and even take their photo under the famous Hitching Post II sign.

Another local favorite is Standing Sun Winery. John Wright came to the area in 2005 and began making wine in 2007. Standing Sun now produces more than 2,000 cases annually, specializing in Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc, Petite Syrah, Syrah, and their signature Rhone varietals. This unique winery not only serves as the production facility for their wine, but also as the tasting room, a concert/event venue, as well as an eclectic Art Gallery featuring artworks from around the country. Situated on Second St. in Buellton, this is becoming a little hot spot and destination in its own right.

AT A GLANCE Loring Wine Company

A self-confessed Pinot Noir freak, Brian Loring’s philosophy on making wine is that the fruit is everything -- what happens in the vineyard determines the quality of the wine. Loring does not own any vineyards, instead seeking out the best growers in the best regions and telling them to farm the acres the same way they do their own. Loring currently produces 10 vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs from vineyards throughout California, plus a few appellation blended Pinots and Chardonnays under the Loring Wine Company label. Located next to Hitching Post II in Buellton, the Loring tasting room has an outdoor space for enjoying a picnic. Hours are Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Mosby Winery and Vineyard

Bill Mosby became intrigued by Italian varietal grapes in 1975 and began to cultivate Sangiovese and Nebbiolo; the wines were bright and fruity with clean finishes, perfect for food pairing. The winery became the first in Santa Barbara County to devote itself exclusively to Italian varietals. The number of Italian varietals planted in the Mosby vineyards continued to grow, and in 1980 the Mosby tasting room was opened in the old Carriage House on the property.

Terravant Wine Company

Established in 2008, Terravant Wine Company (TWC) is a custom crush facility to help Santa Barbara County wineries grow their business and focus on what they do best. Today, 22 independent wineries produce their wine in the facility, while having complete creative control over their grapes, process and finishing touches.

SPECIAL EVENTS The Buellton Chamber of Commerce sponsors and produces a few of Buellton’s signature events. The Buellton Wine & Chili Festival takes place in the Spring and features local wine, beer, live music, and a chili cook-off. Local residents and restaurants are welcome to participate in the cook-off and join in on the fun.

The Buellton Brew Fest takes place the first Saturday in May at River View Park and boasts a unique mix of craft beer from around the state and country. Guests are greeted with a souvenir pilsner glass and partake in a day of craft beer tastings, live music, food trucks, lawn games and more. The Brew Fest is the Chamber’s largest event of the year and welcomes people from across the country who stay in our community and support our local economy.

The Buellton Winter Fest is sponsored by the Buellton Vi s i t o r s B u r e a u , C h a m b e r o f C o m m e r c e , B u e l l t o n Rec, and the Historical Society.

This event takes place in December and offers a full day of activities. The day begins with Breakfast with Santa at the Rec Center, followed by 20 tons of snow on the Avenue of Flags, along with, beer/wine, food, light parade, and the annual tree lighting.

Buellton City Council The Buellton City Council consists of a body of 5 elected officials. In the past, the role of the Mayor was appointed by the council. In 2014, a ballot measure was passed by the voters to elect a Mayor for a term of 2 years. November 2016 marks the date for the first elected Mayor.

The Council works with a City Manager that oversees the various departments in the City. City Hall is located directly across from the Buellton Post Office. Council meetings take place at 6pm on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month in the Council Chambers which are adjacent to the Buellton Library, behind the Post Office. Council meetings are open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. All meetings are archived on the City website and may be live streamed from a computer. Agendas are posted the Friday prior to the meeting for review at www.CityofBuellton.com.
