What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting thin, filiform needles into the skin at strategic places on the body to influence the flow of Qi. When compared to the hollow hypodermic needles most people are used to seeing, the filiform needles are solid and can be constructed of a variety of materials, most commonly stainless steel but also gold or silver.

How is Acupuncture Done?

Your acupuncturist will inquire into your medical background and may perform a physical examination before beginning treatment. Thin needles are inserted into particular points on the body during an acupuncture treatment. For maximum efficacy, the acupuncturist may gently twist the needles. The average needle retention time is around 20 minutes, with sessions lasting between 30 and 60 minutes.
