pril is a really one of the best months of the calendar in Delray Beach. Not only do we get to celebrate the Delray Affair but we also start to see the season transition into a slightly

On Atlantic Avenue it’s not hard to find seniors walking along-

side young folks and families dining next to millennials. Very few places have this kind of widespread appeal, which was the goal when the vision was first forged all those years ago.

We should be grateful—and we are—to have a place to gather.

Delray’s downtown is the heart of the community, even more so than the beach, which is also wonderful. But many coastal com-

munities have great beaches, there are very few Atlantic Avenues and Pineapple Groves.

It’s nice to see the urbanism and energy spread south of the ave,

with new projects and nice to see interest in places such as Artist’s

Alley and North Federal Highway too. Even the Linton corridor has new life and serves as a nice complement to the downtown.

As we enter the slower spring months, do yourself a favor and

explore. There’s so much to see and do here.

In this issue of Atlantic Ave Magazine, we visit the new surf

museum, talk about what’s next in terms of city government and check in with our usual vast array of experts on all things good and healthy.

Palm Beach Poetry Festival Invites Local Poets & Poetry Lovers to Several Upcoming Public Events

Susan R. Williamson, Director of the Palm Beach Poetry Festival, and Dr. Blaise Allen, Director of Community Outreach, today invited local poets and poetry fans to several upcoming public events: April 4-12:30pm (Saturday) New York School Poetry With John Casquarelli at Delray Beach Center for the Arts $10 fee at the door In the 1960s, a group of poets took part in a form of writing known as the New York School. Their work was deeply influenced by both modernism and surrealism. The voice of the poems often utilized a kind of urban colloquialism and touched on topics such as consumerism, specific moments in time, sex, and art/theater/music/film. Visiting poet John Casquarelli is the author of two full-length collections and is an English Instructor at CUNY Kingsborough. Habitat For Humanity Of South Palm Beach Receives $5,000 State Farm Grant To Support Financial Fitness Workshops To Homeowners In 2015

State Farm Insurance has generously given a $5,000 grant to Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County to help fund a series of Financial Fitness Challenge workshops for local homeowners. Since its inception in 1991, Habitat has required all families to participate in financial literacy classes as they work toward homeownership. The classes are held monthly in Boynton Beach. Thanks to this grant, members of the general public may also attend these classes at no cost. “Attending the Financial Fitness Workshop taught me how to budget,” said homeowner Erica Health, who attended the workshops last year and has moved into her new Habitat home. “Now that I am a homeowner, I know how to prioritize my bills and have cut down on unnecessary shopping.” “We are very grateful to State Farm for funding this eight month financial education series. By educating families about financial literacy, we help them prepare for homeownership,” said Michael Campbell, Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County’s Executive Director.

“Before You Give Up, Do This…” And you’ll be surprised how simple it is…

Dear Friend, Some people come to my office and tell me they’ve “tried everything.” They come to me ready to give up. That’s right, four out of five people who show up in my office have taken “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that have only served to temporarily mask symptoms. But, that’s not what most people are looking for. Health (or the lack of it) very often has simple causes, and very reasonable corrections. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. But, before I tell you more, let me tell you something about me.

Here’s my story… “At the time, I’m an active, happy ten year old, and life is good. But then, it happens… I develop a painful type of headache known as ‘migraines.’ In my case it comes on suddenly. On a weekly basis I’m getting at least one migraine with pain so bad I have to go in a dark room, with no sounds, and pray when I wake up the pain is gone. The throbbing pain sometimes is so bad I can’t even think. I’m afraid I’ll do badly in school, be unable to do sports, and lose friends if the disability continues. After trying medication (one of the only options, according to the doctor) my parents and I decide against it. But, there’s more… A family friend convinces my family and me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then ‘corrects’ my spine (he tells me there’s nerve pressure on my neck going to my head). The correction doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and shortly afterwards, my migraines disappear. Oh, did I mention this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office, I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!” Let me tell you about Natalia, my girlfriend. For 5 years, she suffered with bad low back pain and restless pain in her legs at night. Since she was a nurse she saw specialists who ordered tests. They put her on powerful medications yet she still suffered. At age 28, after suffering for years, she started chiropractic care here, and the pain in her legs

Volunteers from Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS) participated in International Good Deeds Day, on Sunday, March 15th. International Good Deeds Day is an annual, global tradition that includes countless good deeds being done all around the world. Last year, over half a million participants in 50 countries worldwide gave over 2 million volunteer hours, making Good Deeds Day the largest and most far- reaching day of good deeds. Spring Fling Sparkles with Over One Million Dollar Event

Proceeds Benefit Club Children The Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County waltzed into spring at the 34th Annual Gala Spring Fling on Friday, March 13th at The Breakers Palm Beach and for the second year in a row, hit record highs by raising over one million dollars to benefit the Club’s children. Leading the charge was this year’s

chairman, Danielle Hickox Moore with Honorary Chairmen Mary Freitas, Thomas Quick and Eddy Taylor. The evening began as guests entered The Breakers and were greeted warmly by Club members from the Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club. They then entered the Mediterranean Ballroom where they were treated to cocktails and a display of spring themed, painted artwork done in the Clubs by the children. When the chimes rang, the

doors to the Venetian Ballroom opened and guests moved on to what looked like a spring dream, filled with cherry blossoms, hand painted water glasses and fresh flowers. Positive energy filled the room and the Marcia Mitchell Band had the guests on the dance floor from the minute they arrived. Following dinner, Tom Quick announced that the Lawrence J. and Florence A. DeGeorge Charitable Trust were graciously contributing $300,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs, helping him kick off the live auction and the Fight Hunger – Gifts from the Heart portion of the evening. Guests bid on a trip to New York Fashion Week, an Ezulwini Game Lodge South African Safari, the 2016 Robb Report Car of the Year Judgeship, a yacht charter from HMY Yachts and a once in lifetime experience package to solve a “kidnapping” mystery. To close out this fantastic evening, Danielle Hickox Moore announced a pledge from the Mary Alice Fortin Foundation to build an additional Club in Belle Glade, adding to the six school sites and Teen Center already in the area. This will create an even larger Boys & Girls Clubs presence in Belle Glade and will allow the Boys & Girls Clubs to impact thousands more of children’s lives who would otherwise be home alone struggling to do homework or care for siblings. Proceeds from the Spring Fling will support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County.

Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in April for $50 or less.

Now, I try and learn to let dogs approach me so I don’t freak them out with my enthusiasm, but when there’s a ton of dogs in one location and within petting reach, it’s a free for all! April is Keep America Beautiful Month and one of the non-profit’s programs is the Great American Cleanup, which is the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks off in more than 20,000 communities each spring that engages 2 million volunteers who create positive change and lasting impact in their own backyards. Lucky for us, the Parks and Rec department has once again set up the Great American Beach Cleanup so we can all get involved and clean up the beach we all love so much. Held Saturday, April 18 from 8 to 10 a.m., the Cleanup organizers invite you and your friends to meet at the Sandoway Park (just north of the Sandoway House) and grab a bag, gloves and bottle of water and get their litter-removal on. Dirty beach? Clean it up! I’ve participated in the Cleanup for the past couple of years and it is a very rewarding experience, and the Bloody Mary at Caffe Luna Rosa afterward tasted that much sweeter. This special fundraising event wasco-hosted by Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, the daughter of legendary movie star and dancer Rita Hayworth who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease, and internationally renowned designer Carleton Varney, who recently completed a $9-million “reimagining” of The Colony Hotel, a Palm Beach landmark for nearly 70 years.

The setting returns to Los Angeles. Also returning are cast regulars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto; Michelle Rodriguez as Letty; Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pearce and Ludacris as Tej Parker. The setup is that Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) is seeking revenge for the death of his brother Owen from the previous episode. Clive Owen stars as a fallen warrior Raiden in “Last Knights.” Raiden rises against a corrupt, sadistic ruler (Aksel Hennie) to avenge his dishonored master Bartok (Morgan Freeman). Kazuaki Kiyia (“Goemon”) directs a story by Michael Konyves (“Fire and Ice”). The rating is R for violence, of course. April 10 Ready for another Nicholas Sparks tearjerker? “The Longest Ride” is based on the Sparks’ novel of the same name, directed by George Tillman (“Faster,” “Notorious”). Scott Eastwood stars as Luke Collins, a former bull-riding champion looking for a comeback when he meets Sophia Danko (Britt Robertson), a college student about to embark on her dream job in the New York City art world. Pierce Brosnan stars as King Louis XIV in “The Moon and The Sun.” King Louis wants immortality, and he intends to take it by stealing the life force of a mermaid (Bingbing Fan). Richard Price’s script is based on Tom Rob Smith’s novel. Expect more of the same in “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.” Kevin James rides his Segway again after his 2009 comedy was an unexpected hit. This time he goes to a security guard expo in Las Vegas with his daughter. He is mocked by casino security until he steps in and lends a hand to thwart some dangerous art thieves. Andy Fickman (“Parental Guidance”) directs and the cast includes Molly Shannon, David Hennie, Raini Rodriguez, Eduardo Verastegui and Nicholas Turtorro. The title “Monkey Kingdom” is self-evident. This sixth documentary from Disneynature is helmed by Mark Linfield and Alastair Fothergil, who are old hands at the nature genre (“Chimpanzee,” “Earth”). The story follows the relocation of Maya, a blond bobbed monkey, through the dense jungles of South Asia, with many perils along the way. April 24 “The Age of Adeline” stars Blake Lively as a woman who ceases to age after a serious accident. In her new immortal state, Adeline has adventures all across the 20th century. Lee Toland Krieger (“The Spec-

tacular Now”) directs, and the cast includes Ellen Burstyn, Harrison Ford, Amanda Crew, Michael Hulsman and Kathy Bates. Newcomer Pepper Flynt Salvati is a seven-year-old “Little Boy” who will do anything within his power to end World War II and bring home his dad. The writer-director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde of the Smithsonian Institute leads a prestige cast that includes Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson, Kevin James, Ben Chaplin, Michael Rappaport and Cary Tagawa. Buckle your swash Russell. “The Water Diviner” stars Russell Crowe, who also directs, as Australian farmer Joshua Connor, who in 1919 took off in search for his three missing sons, last seen fighting against Turks in the bloody Battle of Gallipoli. Up arrival in Istanbul he meets Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko), a pretty hotelier who is raising a son alone. He also meets Ortun (Dylan Georgiandes), who befriends him and Major Hasan (Yilmaz Erdooan, a Turkish officer) who fought against his sons and may be his only hope of finding them.

As many as 60 percent of patients who opt for hip replacement surgery will end up with clots in the deep veins, clots which pose a serious risk of death or disability. More conservative, cutting edge options for your hip pain are available.

Hip complaints are a big reason people seek medical help and our office sees its share of patients suffering from some type of hip pain. A majority of hip pain results from recent or past injuries such as falls, sports injuries and motor vehicle accidents. Patients that suffer from acute or chronic hip pain don’t always have isolated direct hip involvement; in fact, rarely the hip joint itself is not the main contributor of the pain. Pain can often be caused by narrowing disc space in the low back and areas like lumbosacral joint, sacroiliac regions, piriformis muscle and bursas. If these secondary areas are ignored, total resolution of the pain in unlikely. Anatomy of the Hip The hip joint is labeled as a ball and socket joint much like the shoulder. The ball portion is made up of the top (head) of the thighbone (femur) and the socket is formed by an area of the pelvis called the acetabulum. Within the joint is a ring of cartilage called the labrum that surrounds the

What causes hip pain? Hip pain can be the result of a number of injuries or conditions. Some of the specific conditions that affect the hip include the following: Osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis also known as “degenerative joint disease” is one of the most common causes of hip pain in elder adults. Arthritis means “joint inflammation”. Inflammation and injury to the joint causes a breakdown of the ring of cartilage discussed earlier and eventually, your cortical bone that lies under the cartilage rubs together producing pain, swelling, decreased painful range of motion and at times deformity. Some risk factors such as being overweight, age, improperly treated injuries, muscle weakness and poor biomechanics increase your chances of developing hip osteoarthritis. Bursitis A bursa is a saclike structure between the skin and bone or between tendons, ligaments and bone. Bursae are lined by synovial tissue which produces fluid that lubricates and reduces friction between these structures. Often these bursas can become inflamed, producing pain and swelling, leading to a condition known as Bursitis. Bursitis of the hip is a very common cause of hip pain. Sciatica Sciatica hip pain is an excruciating and often times debilitating condition that millions of people suffer from each year. Hip pain

from sciatica is extremely common. The sciatic nerve begins in the lower back and runs through the buttock and hip to the foot. Several spinal disorders can produce nerve compression creating pain into the hip region with spinal stenosis and disc compression being the most common. Seven terrible foods for your teeth – and they’re not candy!

Sugary sweets aren’t the only enemies of teeth

Sweet as Sugar We’ve all heard it since we were little kids: Sugar is going to rot your teeth! But why has the focus always just been about sugar? Sure, it’s easy to stomach that sugar is the main culprit of cavities galore, but what exactly is it about sugar that is bad for teeth? Bacteria that resides in our mouths have an easy (and enjoyable) time breaking down lots of different types of sugars and turning it into, ultimately, acids. Acids can decalcify or demineralize teeth and take away the structural content by eating away at tooth enamel, which then causes dental decay. The visible parts of the teeth are usually pretty safe from these acids because they can be washed away with water or when you brush your teeth. However, there are more problems lurking when sugar and food get trapped in the crevices of the teeth because bacteria have more time to feed on them. So if you think you’re safe by avoiding just sugary candies, think again! There are less obvious offenders and can include sticky, starchy or hard foods that can just as easily damage your chompers. Seven Food Don’ts 1. Popcorn Kernels – Yes, popcorn is admittedly super tasty and low-cal, making it an ideal snack, however, these little kernels can wreak havoc on your smile. Unpopped kernels can break teeth, especially if there are fillings involved. Additionally, if you happen to get a hull stuck in your gums or between teeth, it may stay there until it becomes very irritating, causing damage to the gums. Especially avoid caramel popcorn. It’s sweet, chewy, sticky and can be hard, which all point to damage. 2. Citrus fruits – Grapefruit, lemons and oranges are all packed with numerous health benefits, however, if you frequent these fruits, you are exposing your teeth to acid upon acid 50 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

that can erode tooth enamel. Don’t avoid these foods as the health benefits are worth it, but just make sure to brush after enjoying. 3. Sports drinks – It’s super important to stay hydrated, especially living in the Sunshine State, but water is a better option when compared to sports drinks or even sodas. Not only do these drinks contain a lot of sugar, they are typically enjoyed over a long period of time (sports game, lunch, etc.). The sugar is converted to an acid by the aforementioned bacteria, which dissolve the teeth to form cavities. Electrolytes are great, so if you’re going to drink sugar-laden drinks, enjoy them quickly and finish with a swig of H20. 4. Ice – If you’re looking for a crunchy snack that doesn’t include calories, ice might seem like a good option. However, chewing on hard substances can leave teeth vulnerable to dental emergencies and can damage enamel. If your teeth are worn or chipped already, the ice can crack and damage the tooth structure even more. 5. Potato chips – Even though potato chips are a delicious gift from the heavens, steer clear of them if you’d like to maintain healthy teeth. Potato chips are filled with starch, which tends to get trapped in your teeth, especially if you’re a fan of the wavy chips. So if you pop open a bag, make sure to floss and brush to remove all of the food particles that can lead to plaque buildup. 6. Dried fruits – Raisins, dried plums, apricots and more are all delicious, but are very

loaded with sugar and tend to be very sticky. You think you’re getting your daily dose of vitamins, but you’re actually giving the bacteria in your mouth a long-lasting sugar party. Try and stick to fresh fruit, or just make sure to brush afterward. 7. Peanut butter – This is pretty much a staple for anyone in college, and even though it’s loaded with tons of protein and fiber, it’s super sticky and sweet and clings to your teeth the same way that candies do. If you can’t shake your PB&J lunches, or the latenight spoonfuls, just make sure to wash it down with a tall glass of water. Bye, Cavities! The moral of the story is that the more you pay attention to what you’re putting in your mouth, the better chances you have of avoiding cavities. It’s always better to be proactive than reactive, especially because it’s easier to maintain a healthy mouth than to try and get back to a healthy mouth once you have cavities, fillings, periodontal disease, etc. If you’re going to indulge in sugary, sticky, hard and starchy, make sure to do so infrequently and always follow it with water, floss and a thorough brushing of the teeth. Could your morning brew be the key to eliminating chemicals and other toxins in your body and healing your skin?

Considered one of the oldest medical techniques still in practice today, enemas have a long-standing reputation of improving digestive function, treating constipation and a myriad of other benefits. Now, coffee enemas are increasing in popularity as more holistic practitioners prescribe them for the treatment of fungal infections, chronic fatigue and even cancer. Dr. Max Gerson, founder of the Gerson Therapy model, was one of the earliest researchers to study the effects of coffee on cancer cells and other fungal diseases. Over the course of his research, Gerson discovered that the caffeine solution, when injected through the rectum, was able to stimulate the production of bile and expand the bile ducts. Additionally, it eliminated the toxins and stimulated the production of glutathione S-transferase (GST)— a powerful enzyme in the liver. The glutathione S-transferase makes up a group of detoxification enzymes which bond to toxins that are later flushed out of the system. Other scientists, like Dr. Lee Wattenberg have echoed Gerson’s finding by acknowledging that the substances found in coffee (kahweol and cafestol palmitate) are proven to detoxify the electrophiles located in the blood stream. Based on Gerson’s therapy regimen, terminally ill cancer patients were advised to perform coffee enemas several times per day to speed up liver activity, cleanse the colon walls, and improve digestion. “This treatment should be followed strictly, both in the clinic and later at home, for at least two years,” said Gerson. “The liver is the main organ for the regeneration of the body’s metabolism for the transformation of food from intake to output.” When cancer patients undergo chemother52 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Since a regular enema treatment is held anywhere from 12 to 15 minutes and the body’s entire blood supply filters through the liver in three minute increments, the liver’s filtering agents are able to remove toxins and parasites from the bloodstream. Gerson’s finding revealed that regular use of coffee enemas by patients suffering degenerative diseases and acute illness were found to: • heighten cellular energy • improved tissue health • enhanced blood circulation • stronger immunity system • superior cell regeneration In the initial stages of the treatment, it’s common for “flare-ups” to occur as the flow of bile increases. Some have even reported nausea and vomiting as side effects. Practitioners point out that it’s crucial to use only organically grown coffee when performing these enemas because commercially grown beans contain chemicals which could cause damage to the liver. What’s the difference between colonics and coffee enemas? Although they’re sometimes used interchangeably, colonics do differ from coffee enemas in a few respects. Colonics are traditionally used to cleanse the bowel while enemas are used to accelerate the liver’s detoxification. Performing both colonics and coffee enemas can be harmful to the body so it’s typically not recommended. What is the connection to coffee, your colon and your skin?

Your skin is a reflection of your liver health. Although we don’t often connect our liver health to the health of our skin, understanding this connection is crucial to having skin that is truly healthy and not just constantly using products to make it look a certain way. Interestingly enough when Pilates was first invented it was for the rehab of injured soldiers during the war. As time went on Joe Pilates brought his work to New York City, and dancers came in with injuries for rehab, soon it was thought of as the exercise for dancers.

As time has progressed, I have discovered that Pilates is for everyone, especially living here in Florida. I have found that Pilates is “essential” for our “over 50” population. Over 80% of my clientele is 50 and over. Pilates can help anyone achieve good health and vitality at any age. While it has important benefits for all, Pilates is necessary as you age because as we grow older we start losing control and coordination of our muscles. As we age we need to make sure that we are keeping our bodies flexible after years of wear and tear, we need to do something to keep them mobile and flexible in order to keep up with our daily lives and enjoy the activities that we love to do. How many of us would love to have more rotation with our golf swing or tennis game? As we age we tend to get tighter plus we don’t work our feet enough, which can lead to not being balanced in our body. I have some clients that worry about getting down to the floor and not being able to get up. Pilates can help us with all of these things. Some of the problems we experience as we age include kyphosis (also called round back or hunchback), lordosis (commonly referred to as swayback or saddle back), lower back problems and frozen shoulder. By strengthening the muscle groups affected and increasing flexibility, Pilates can help relieve the pain that accompanies these ailments. Even those who have already begun suffering from osteoporosis can benefit from practicing a modified Pilates routine. Pilates also helps to prevent osteoporosis by increasing bone density. Pilates exercises can be performed at any level of fitness, so it is good for beginners and then work to a more advanced level. If you knew what was in the water supply you would most definitely give Daniel Wolfram a call. Wolfram is the one of the first people to find out that our tap water is filled with Chlorine, Fluoride and Chloramine.

Although these additives are thought to clean the water we drink they have adverse affects to our health. They range from respiratory irritants to toxicity in our air and other negative side effects. But to most people the water they drink is of little consequence. “People spend thousands of dollars on air conditioners, ultra violet lights and air filters but don’t think about the quality of the water they use in their homes,” said Wolfram, who started out helping his father in the plumbing business before he could reach the sink. Not only was he shining copper fittings at the age of five in his father’s plumbing business, but he spent afternoons at a vocational school learning plumbing. “I’m not good at spelling or writing and I didn’t want a desk job. I always knew I wanted to be a plumber.” So that’s what he did. He got an engineer and plumbing degree from Alfred State College and began working for his father’s East Hampton Plumbing business. Nine years ago he took his experience (and expertise) to South Florida and started Tungston Plumbing. His clients could not be happier. “I feel like I can trust Tungston Plumbing. They give the best quality, service and knowledge for the money. I have been using Daniel for six years,” said Brad Roberts, a property manager for upscale homes. The 23rd annual Delray Beach Open by the Venetian® Las Vegas was as successful as ever, with more than 43,000 fans taking over the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center during the 10-day tournament, and millions of fans catching matches televised in more than 100 countries.

Spectators had the opportunity to watch Ivo Karlovic win the singles tournament, the Bryan Brothers further solidify their status as the world’s No. 1 men’s doubles team in winning the doubles tournament, and Team International trump Team USA for the ATP Champions Tour title. In addition, fans jammed to local artists/ bands, dined on delicious on-site cuisine and enjoyed top tennis matches. Opening night kicked off with a Draw Party hosted at Salt 7 and Valentine’s Day included a romantic dinner on-site followed by the evening’s ATP Champions Tour matches. On Sunday, tennis players enjoyed an hour-long clinic with the legends of the ATP Champions Tour: James Blake, Brad Gilbert, Justin Gimelstob, Goran Ivanisevic, Mikael Pernfors and Mark Philippoussis. Clinic participants were able to engage and receive tips from the legends. The start of the ATP World Tour was not a quiet one, as children were welcomed to the USTA Kidz Day on Presidents Day for

some friendly competition. Two of the Delray Beach Open’s nonprofit partners, National Parkinson Foundation and Ukulele Kids Club, brought families to join in on the fun and cheer on the kid’s tournaments. The week of excitement continued with a Chamber Bash that brought together local businesses with catering provided by City Oyster, Shake Shack, Salt 7 and Ziri. Guests at the Bash were then invited to watch the night match. Guests who attended the Ladies Day Luncheons were able to check out Midas Diamonds and Ulysse Nardin timepieces and meet several ATP pros while being wined and dined before watching the pros play. Attendees also participated in the FastServe Challenge, kept eyes and eared peeled for the VolleyGirls promo squad and viewed several rare Porsches on display. All guests had the opportunity to be treated as VIPS at this year’s tournament as many enjoyed watching the matches from the the on-court “Best Seats in the House” and the Champion Porsche convertible.

Our beach buddy from the West Coast, Marina del Rey, is turning fifty years old this month and Swinton the turtle of Delray Beach will be there to help them commemorate this important milestone. Boasting the largest man-made marina in the United States, it’s no surprise that this grandioso birthday party on the water is one not to be missed. Just a little over a year ago the Beach Buddies met for the first time out west, and a coast to coast friendship was born. Marty the Pelican, their mascot, then flew east with the Marina del Rey Conventions and Visitors Bureau, and they fell equally in love with our enchanting little ocean town as we did theirs. The cross country, cross marketing campaign that followed continues to grow. But this certainly isn’t a one sided friendship. Capitalizing on the excitement and energy this momentous weekend is sure to exude, Swinton will be taking Marty and some of LA’s key media back with him for three days of fun and activities in Delray Beach, thus garnering stories in west coast publications. Helping each other reach other markets to increase visitors in their alternating off seasons is one of the main

For a fashionista it’s heaven on earth and for everyone else it’s a place you would approach like a museum. The difference, of course, is that at a museum you can look but you can’t touch. At Margaux Riviera you can touch, look and even purchase what moves your soul – or your torso – with bliss. As a former fashion editor I knew there was a heritage to this retail shop that evolved from the former site of Evolution. And, it turns out that Margaux Riviera is the sole property of quite an accomplished woman - Margaret Doerrer. an upscale retailer and continued upward to fashion merchandiser, designer and executive for global brands. Suffice to say that Doerrer knows what she is doing. She knows where to shop on a global scale (she traveled the world for her former clients), knows what to buy and has a way of putting it all together like a svengali would its prized protégé. “My vision was to replicate a Beach Resort by having a little bit of everything from swimwear to skincare.” It seems that Doerrer’s fashion vision is 20-20. There is such an eclectic mix of merchandise that you could outfit yourself with everything from head to toe. There are sandals, dresses, bathing suits, elaborate beaded tunics, simple T-shirts, knit and woven pants,

shorts and dresses for all occasions. It’s not just the merchandise that will make you swoon for a credit card with no limit; it’s the uniqueness and presentation. Like a fine meal the entire store glows with just the right ingredients. A table made of teak is dolled up with a huge glossy sea shell with a sea fan holding colorful earrings. Below is a table filled with tiny seashells topped with colorful T’s and a small statue of Buddha. If you were to describe this visual feast of

clothing, accessories and home items it would best be described as Gandhi meets the French Riviera. There are dressy silk tunics with a Zen feel but also casual cotton print ones as well. Some things are imported from Europe and others are made in the US. “I like to feel that my merchandise goes from good to better to best. I travel all over the world picking out handmade sandals from Capri, beaded and fringed necklaces from England and embroidered linen tunics from Hawaii. But there are things here made in the USA as well,” said Doerrer who is adding a beauty bar for hair and make-up in the back. Let’s face it, Doerrer thinks big. She approached the creation of her new store as if its presence was as important as Versailles. The ceiling is an elaborate stained copper color with intricate trimming, and the shelves below are filled with colorful jewelry, handbags and hand printed stuffed pillows from France. There are also traces of the sea everywhere. Boxes (in large and small sizes) are covered with white seashells and serving plates and utensils have sea-full themes. Some are embroidered, others are painted by local artisans and others are adorned with jewels. But they all have one thing in common – you won’t see them anywhere else. That’s what makes this new retail store such a terrific find. All of the merchandise is handpicked by Doerrer, who seems to understand the difference between average and sensational. She has combined colors, themes and styles in perfect harmony with both the interior of the store and the exterior locale. Christine MacDonald agrees. “What a wonderful boutique. The help was amazing and

the clothing is AMAZING! There’s so much for one to love.” MacDonald is right. There are hostess gifts such as scented candles, body lotions, room diffusers and sea themed serving dishes. There’s also a section in the back for swimsuits, beach bags and cover-ups. But they’re not your garden variety of swimwear and accessories. These are over the top in fashion and function. “We have SPF 50 protective clothing, tops and swimsuits for the beach,” said Doerrer as she pulled out a zip front SPF protective knit shirt from the rack. There are also subtle yet sexy chiffon dresses and tops (with and without embellishment) and color coordinated swimsuits with macramé, fringe and sequin trimming. “We have fun swimwear in all unique brands.

We also have mineral based suntan lotions and creams that won’t turn your skin white.” To make your shopping experience even more comfortable they have oversized fitting rooms with billowing chiffon curtains that will make you feel like you’re in a spa. That’s because this cycle motion madness is the greatest endorphin rush you can get (legally). Although it seemed like something only speed demons and overachievers do I realized this spinning craze had some real merit. And not because Jake Gyllenhaal, Lena Dunham and Katie Holmes do it, but because spinning is the greatest one hour workout on the planet. It’s fueled with music, motivation, movement, perspiration and inspiration and leads one to that sweet spot of well being. Both Susan Albinder and Linda Besman knew that a long time ago. That’s why they became fitness and spin instructors while they had jobs in the mental health field. Susan was a psychotherapist and Linda a teacher. Both women found they could help people through momentum rather than monotony. “Instead of helping people on a couch or at a desk I can inspire and empower them to reach their highest potential through spinning,” said Susan, who calls spinning a form of sweat therapy. Twin sister Linda had a similar revelation. After teaching in a private school she realized she was more inclined to help people raise their self esteem, con-

fidence and body image by way of physical fitness. Although she has been the fitness Director at both Gold’s Gym and LA Fitness she now works in tandem with her sister at PūrCycle in Delray Beach. The great thing about PūrCycle is that you can be a beginner or an advanced spinner and still take the same class. “It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress. We want you to be the most fabulous version of yourself, we have a motto, ‘Spin like a Rock Star – look like a Movie Star,’” said Susan. And it’s true. As a first time spinner I found the class to be absolutely electrifying. It’s like being at a night club without the cigarette smoke and banal conversation. Instead you ride at your own pace to upbeat music that moves your soul and body smoothly into a blissful state. There’s nothing like it. Just ask Blair Merriam who has been taking spin classes with Susan and Linda for seven years. “I come five times a week because spinning is the most stupendous aerobic workout you can do,” said Merriam as he glanced at his heart rate monitor screen that showed he burned 820 calories with a heart rate of 147. Merriam’s partner William Martinez has also been spinning for years. “This is the best exercise. It doesn’t hurt your knees, you can adjust the pedal speed and because of it I get to eat great food and drink great wine.” Martinez has a point. According to Susan, spinning enhances muscular endurance, is a good form of cardiovascular conditioning and detoxifies the body. You can also lose weight, relieve anxiety, stress, and it’s good for your heart. Despite all the great things that result from spinning in a darkened room with twinkling lights and voluminous music there is another aspect to this perpetual motion movement. “It’s very social here. We help you get in the

best shape of your life and we outline a meal plan, take measurements and encourage people who come here. We even send weekly inspirational messages and quotes.” They also make getting fit fun. Their “Little Black Dress Challenge” and “Beach Body Challenge” are just two ways they have of motivating people to feel and look their best. “We celebrate the completion of each challenge by giving prizes like free spin classes, massages and free dinners. It’s keeps people motivated.” They sure do. Every Saturday morning at 9 am they have a live DJ spinning music to motivate spinners toward gravity sourced nirvana. Both Susan and Linda (known as the Spin Twins) want to take the spinning phenomenon to the next level. “We not only have a DJ on Saturday morning but we have multi-sensory experiences using videos of exotic terrains and virtual rides through France, Switzerland and beyond. We go all over the world.” They also have charity rides for good causes such as a recent ride to support a local nonprofit, “Delray Students First.” They’re planning another charity spin soon to support an animal cause. Although owning a spin studio like PūrCycle has an outer manifestation of motion, Susan and Linda are also dedicated to its inclusiveness and intrinsic growth. “Our father, Dr. Irvin Besman always instilled in us the benefits of health and fitness. He also taught us that it’s important to be of help to others and to be kind and respectful. PūrCycle is a happy place.” Another person who helps make PūrCycle a happy place is instructor Tonette. She motivates, captivates and keeps an eye on her spinning brood. If you ask Spin enthusiast Mindy Gordon she’ll bestow the virtues of spinning and Tonette. “I’ve been spinning for 18 years and Tonette is the best instructor. Spinning is a great way to get a good cardio workout without getting bored. When you’re in a group it’s really motivating.” For businesswoman Donna Sauer it’s less about motivation and more about stress relief and cardio workout. “When the lights go down I can really relax, it’s the best use of my time. Whether it’s raining or hot outside I am getting the best cardio workout in the shortest time. Jason Blinder touched many lives. As someone who believed in truth and justice he was an advocate for all things in their proper place. He was also the voice (and mentor) for causes that needed his perceptiveness and brilliance.

Jason’s life was short – he passed away at 29 – but he left a legacy of kindness, leadership, scholarship and integrity that went far beyond his chronological age. It is for that reason the students of FAU wanted to memorialize him with a bench (and poignant) plaque outside the FAU Student Government House Chambers. The Blinder family added to this auspicious honorarium a gavel, justice robes and a scholarship for a student facing adversity who overcame the odds. It was Jason who had the most adversity to overcome (he had Crohn’s Disease) yet he did not want his disease - or his medical struggles - to define him. trying times at the university. He was also a role model for others who knew him. “Jason was knowledgeable beyond his age, not only with concepts but wisdom. He made everyone feel important,” said Chris Mack. To Jarrett Stark he was a friend to cherish eternally. “Everyone should be blessed to have a friend like Jason. He was a wonderful role model and I often ask myself, ‘what would Jason do.’ He touched all our lives.” The dedication was a poignant moment in time when students, alumni, faculty, FAU administrators and the Blinder family and friends could leave something concrete behind to hold a space in the hearts and minds of those who knew Jason. And for those who didn’t know him, it will be a

constant reminder of his pure essence and optimism. Engraved on the bench were Jason’s words: “Regardless of what we decide to do, or how it ends, it’s been a genuine honor for me to sit on the same bench with all of you.” Jason’s mother Helene Blinder has this to say. “The Dedication gave me an opportunity to see firsthand the positive effects Jason had on the FAU community he loved and respected so much. The positive direction he brought to the student government as Chief Justice, and the positive results flowing from that direction, are now permanently memorialized as part of the FAU community. Jason’s memory has been immortalized. I am, my family is, eternally grateful.”

STITCHES BY THE SEA Needlepoint And Knitting Nirvana By Diane feen

There aren’t too many people who don’t gravitate toward Judi Alweil. She’s a creative mentor for many, and a reminder of what is possible if you want to turn a piece of piece of canvas into a colorful wall hanging, handbag, belt, rug or pillow.

Judi is not famous by traditional standards, but if you are hooked into the art of needlepoint or knitting she is the Queen Mother. But you would never know it. She is the last person to toot her own horn or brag about her creative prowess, but behind many a great project is Alweil. That’s because she has spent the last 40 plus years honing her craft. Judi first opened a shop in Long Island, where she was a designer, distributor and manufacturer of needlepoint and yarn products. It was also a safe port in the storm for creative types who longed for the challenge of knitting sweaters, shawls or bags or making colorful masterpieces in needlepoint. When Judi and her husband Dick moved down to South Florida they recreated this artful space on Atlantic Avenue, calling it Stitches by the Sea. True to its namesake it is near the sea and has a sunny disposition that would disarm a hungry grizzly bear.

It’s also a place where you can pick up a designer canvas - that with some artful stitchery – can be transformed into a bird paradise or a Renaissance masterpiece. While some people come to buy the tools of their trade, others bring their work- inprogress to show creative consultants Susan and Pamela. To describe Stitches by the Sea would be like describing a family picnic with colorful fruits and flowers. It’s a real life version of “Steel Magnolias” sans the movie stars. But like all small screen productions this one makes stars out of its employees

and customers. Take Joan Grant for example. The grandmother of five recently picked up a Missoni-style rug she made for her daughter’s foyer. The chevron pattern in tonal shades of light green, purple, orange, turquoise and mauve was made in wool yarn by a technique known as Bargello. Though Joan seemed quite pleased with her efforts, she was nonplussed by the fact that her handiwork was a true work of art – a stitched homage to the great masters like Picasso. “It took me seven months to make this rug. I did it while I was on a cruise and when

I was at home watching TV. Needlepoint is like therapy for me,” said Joan, who credited Judi for some of her success. It was Judi who figured out how to take eight canvases and stitch them together and it was Judi who set the Bargello course. “I showed Joan how to start the project and told her the measurements. I remember sitting on the floor of my house cutting canvas and measuring it.” Judi must be a good teacher because her dedicated friends (and customer’s) have been coming to her for years. They come wanting to make belts, handbags, sweaters, wall tapestry, three-dimensional quirky characters and whatever else you can imagine. Joan made a needlepoint belt for her son and a needlepoint pillow for her grandson to replicate the mascot at Georgetown University. But Judi never takes bragging rights. She is the ombudsman of good taste – the arbiter of classy creative endeavors. That’s why many of her customer’s have followed her from Long Island. Take Carole Piccininni for example. The needlepoint master, who sits at a needlepoint stand most of the time, learned her craft from Judi on

Long Island. Now she can be found most days helping customers with their needlepoint canvases that seem more like precious art than a creative outlet. “The beauty of needlepoint is that people really like doing it and it’s very relaxing. You don’t have to talk and it keeps your hands busy so you don’t eat,” said Carole. If you want to learn to knit there’s Ruth. The former owner of Art, Needle ‘N Canvas is a dyed in the wool crafts maven. Even after two hip replacements she was back at Stitches by the Sea for comfort, camaraderie and knitting. “The people who work here (and the customer’s) make this a great place. I had one customer who told me if she lived in Delray she would come here every day.” There are a lot of people who feel that way. There’s always a buzz of activity, new products (like the linen and cotton sequin yarn with matching ribbon) and a host of creative types to spice up the room. To Kathryn Andrews Stitches by the Sea is nirvana. “I have been knitting and doing needlepoint for many years and this is like a candy store. I want to touch everything. It’s not just a feast for your eyes; you have to be here to

see the stitch patterns and intricate work,” said Andrews reverently. There are a lot of passionate knitters and needlepoint fans who come to Stitches by the Sea to get canvases and yarn to adorn the walls and torsos of their loved ones. Whether you love surfing or just enjoy local history, you won’t want to miss “The Surfing History Project” which recently found a permanent home in Delray Beach at 255 NE Sixth Avenue (US 1).

The Surfing Museum is the latest cultural offering in Delray, a city that is rapidly becoming a cultural highlight in South Florida. What makes the Surfing History Project extra special is the fact that local surfing legends have embraced the effort, hanging out at the museum to greet visitors and share their stories. Their presence brings history to life and allows for visitors to learn just how ingrained surf culture is in Palm Beach County and in Delray Beach. On a recent visit, we were fortunate to meet Tom Warnke, just crowned East Coast Champion in his age group, as our tour guide. Tom has had a lifelong passion for surfing and is an eloquent spokesman for the sport’s rich history in Florida. As we admired beautiful boards from the 50s, 60s and 70s, we got a primer in local surfing history. At one time, the freedom to surf was a hot issue in Delray Beach and Palm Beach County, with lawsuits, landmark legal rulings and ardent debates at City Hall. The exhibit includes old newspaper clippings focusing on the debate in Delray Beach, where the city’s fathers tried in vain to keep a lid on the sport with surfers and some of their mom’s weighing in with the need to let the kids ride. Ultimately, the surfers prevailed, but the debate provides a quaint view into a bygone era. Surfing has a long and storied history in Florida with the state producing champions who went on to worldwide acclaim. In addition to producing champions, it was big business. lantic Avenue was the biggest seller of surf boards in the state and the industry created lots of jobs. Several boards produced in Delray, including the legendary “Richie,” are on exhibit. They are beautiful works of art. One surfing pioneer, Ron Heavyside, made his first board in shop class at the old Seacrest High School. He went on to found Nomad Surf Shops which is still in business and a favorite of serious surfers the world over. The Surfing History Project is modeling itself on a California museum which draws huge crowds. Before settling on its new Delray Beach location, backers were looking at locations in West Palm Beach. The Surfing History Project plans to document, preserve and display a complete history of surfing in the state of Florida, with an emphasis on Palm Beach County. The museum has been set up as a nonprofit and is seeking grants and donations. It is being run by a nine member volunteer board consisting of many local surfing

legends including: Warnke, Fred Salmon, Corky Roche, Bill Keeton, Scott McCranels, Doug Bogue, Justin Beard, Shawn Murray and David Mowry. In addition to a collection of vintage boards, the museum includes thousands of photographs that have been digitized for posterity. The Surfing History Project is seeking old photos, slides, videos or movies and will digitize them for donors in exchange for the ability to use a second copy for the museum. Donors of objects will be given attribution in the exhibits. In addition to chronicling the golden era of surfing in Florida, the project is also interested in recent history archiving many photos including the incredible waves caused by Superstorm Sandy in 2013. BRIAN LYNOTT One Of The Good Guys By Diane Feen

Let’s face it working in a bank does not seem glorious or glamorous. Neither does working as a sales clerk in the hardware department at Sears.

But each has led to a fulfilling life for local resident Brian Lynott. If you haven’t heard of Lynott, it’s because his good deeds are not plastered in magazines or press releases, but are simply under the radar. His passion and commitment to helping others is as high profile as a Kardashian, but only to those familiar with his work. That work encompasses being a Regional Executive with AmTrust Bank, A Division of New York Community Bank as well as a volunteer and financial supporter for organizations that help those in need. “As I got older I realized how fortunate I was and I wanted to give back to the community. The more involved I have become, the more passionate I am about sharing my resources and time with people who need it,” said the Scranton, Pennsylvania native. And that’s exactly what he does. Lynott volunteers his time (and resources) with “The Campaign for Grade Level Reading” in Delray Beach Schools and is on the advisory board (and a volunteer) at Community Partners. For two years he was also a mentor at The Boys & Girls Club in Delray Beach helping with homework, playing sports and being a good role model. Working with these children opened Lynott’s eyes to the needs of those in the community as well as the benefits of selfless giving. “I was humbled and impressed with how good these children were. They want a better life and are so protective of each other. It was rewarding to show them that hard work and dedication can lead to success.” And no one knows better than Lynott. While attending the University of Scranton (where he got a degree in Human Resources) Brian found work in the hardware department at Sears. When a customer (who worked in human resources at a Bank) suggested he consider a career in banking he jumped at the opportunity. “I started out as a bank teller and

was promoted to branch manager at Mellon Bank in Pennsylvania. While I was on vacation in West Palm Beach I saw an ad in the newspaper for a job at a bank. I ended up taking the job and moving to Palm Beach County in the early 90’s. I have seen the city of Delray totally transform.” Transform is a pivotal entity in the life of Brian Lynott. He has not only experienced many transformations in his own life but inspires them in others. “Brian really gets the importance of mentoring and supporting children. He helped get us grants to purchase books for “Campaign for Grade Level Reading,” which is a program that helps children keep up their reading skills in the summer when they traditionally go down,” said Janet Meeks, the Education Coordinator for the City of Delray Beach. For the past three years Lynott has gotten grant money from New York Community Bank (NYCB) to buy backpacks filled with books and a journal. According to Lynott if children are not reading when they are in third grade it’s hard for them to ever catch up. That’s why he is so adamant that this program be funded. “When I get involved in an organization I want to make a difference. I have children of my own and I realize the importance of reading. It gives them better social skills and a competitive edge.” Since Lynott knows that good deeds foster intrinsic well being, he is a cheerleader for getting his team on board as well. Many AmTrust employees (and branch managers) help mentor children. That makes this patriarch of 15 AmTrust branches pretty pleased. “I like our branch managers to volunteer their time with organizations that help lower and moderate income families. It’s important to give back.” One person familiar with Lynott’s tremendous desire to give back is Laura Morse, VP of Development and Communications for Community Partners. She knows that Lynott’s head and heart are in sync with

the needs of the most vulnerable. “One year I called up Brian a few days before Christmas and give him our wish list for the holidays. In just three days he drove up with an SUV filled with gifts and food for our families. He got other branches of the bank involved as well. It’s not just about giving money; it’s about showing up for beautification days, volunteer events and work days. Brian and his team have really been there for us.” It seems that Lynott has been there for a lot of organizations. Although he doesn’t mention them in his bio (or interview) others around him are quick to add that Lynott’s giving nature is spread in all directions. “We partner with an organization called Community Caring Center that gives

healthy food to people in need in Boynton Beach. We funded a grant for them to develop a culinary incubator program to give potential entrepreneurs the opportunity to start their own business in the food services industry,” said Lynott. “They also have a restaurant called Secret Garden on Boynton Beach Blvd. where they showcase food prepared (and locally grown) by incubator program members.” Just because Lynott is a do-gooder doesn’t mean he isn’t a superb bank executive. that loyal base we enjoy investing in Delray because of the success we’ve had here.” There are a few other things Lynott is proud of – his two girls, 13-year-old Grace and 10-year-old Sarah and his wife Dee. There are other things that get Lynott psyched up at 4 am every morning. “I bike or run along A1A every morning. I have been in nine Ironman competitions that include 140.6 miles of swimming, biking and running and I encourage my employees to join me at the gym or in marathons.” If all of this makes you want to take a nap, don’t tell Lynott. “My kids are involved in sports and competitive dance and my wife did a half marathon. OFF THE AVE FOOD & SPIRITS A Great Place To Hang Out And Eat Until Your Hearts Content

They are a lot of new and exciting things happening at Off the Ave, the local ‘feel good’ bar and restaurant in downtown Delray. What makes it so special to neighborhood folks (and tourists) is the fact that it is off the Avenue.

That means you can wind down, enjoy the calm and walk a few yards from big city life. For those who have a wandering eye (or like the glow of the sun or moon), you can now sit outside at one of their new outdoor patio tables. The outdoor patio has five tables and seats 20 people so that you can have a beer (or drink) munch on some jumbo chicken wings and watch the scene as it unfolds. If you want a beefier fare there are some new items on the menu. For burger lovers they have a wonderful new Half Pound BBQ Bacon Burger made with Angus beef. This tasty burger comes topped with beer battered onion rings, BBQ sauce, Cheddar cheese, crispy bacon and sweet baby rays. lap and enhance each other and the quality of beef is first rate. The Oklahoma Brisket Burger is also a popular dish. Made of brisket, chuck and short ribs, it has cheddar cheese, homemade caper mayo and topped with an egg. John of Delray Beach cannot say enough good things about this tasty choice. “OMG, I have a new all-time favorite burger at Off the Ave. It outdoes every burger I’ve ever tried. The meat blend alone could stand on its own for uniqueness, but the caper mayo, sautéed red onions, cheddar cheese, and egg on a toasted English muffin makes it amazing. The marriage of flavors and gives credence to the expression ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’” There are a lot of Off the Ave fans. Some come for the pizza, which is now served in a 10-inch personal pie size (instead of slices) and others swoon for the new Pulled Pork Tacos. “I just tried Off the Ave’s Pulled Pork Tacos and loved them. They’re tender, juicy and well spiced with cilantro and avocado (that give them a nice creamy texture). Served on a tortilla they were perfect,” said Steve Myers. There’s also a South of the border flair at Off the Ave with their Chicken and Steak Quesadillas. The Quesadillas come with fresh cilantro, cheddar jack cheese mixture, seasoning and chipotle ranch dressing with sour cream. Try their new sweet potato waffle fries or scrumptious oversized beer battered onion rings on the side. If you’re a vegetarian, or want to keep it light, try one of their salads. Recently added to the menu is a Caprese Salad. Served with a large portion of buffalo mozzarella, fresh sliced tomatoes and fresh basil the Caprese

Salad is drizzled with balsamic glaze dressing, imported olive oil and kosher salt and pepper. Another exciting new entrée to grace the menu is Beer Battered Alaskan Cod served with steak fries. Fish lovers unite – this is terrific news. It’s hard to mention Off the Ave without talking about their Philly Cheese Steaks. Served with shaved rib-eye steak, mushrooms, onion, bell pepper, provolone, mayo (or mustard) it rests inside a freshly baked roasted bun. For chicken lovers they have chicken Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches. If you would rather have your sandwich on a grilled whole wheat wrap it’s yours for the asking. Another heavy hitter at this neighborhood haunt is their homemade meatballs. Tender and flavorful they’re just like mamma used to make (or you wish she had). You can get a fresh meatball sandwich with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese in a pan roasted bun or have it as an appetizer. Off the Ave is also well known for their pizzas. The pies are made with a tangy homemade sauce and the crust is thin and crispy perfect for pizza lovers. There’s a margherita pizza, veggie, pepperoni, pineapple and ham

(assorted meats) and your choice of toppings. If you’re hungry, but dining solo, try their new personal size pizza that will fulfill your craving for this Italian delight. It’s an Off the Ave tradition to offer 14 rotating ice cold draft beers on tap as well as bottled beer, wine and spirits. It’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement of this hot spot with a dartboard in back, eight flat screen TV’s for sporting events and a joie de vie that is contagious. Happy Hour is Monday to Friday from 3pm to 7pm. There are discounted beers, appetizers and drinks with no pretense, just a good time. “We came together to bring downtown Delray a great place to get together with friends, to hang out and enjoy the local environment with a fine cocktail and some great food at reasonable prices,” said co-owner Adam Knoblock. One thing you have to try at Off the Ave is their giant cast iron heated chocolate chip cookie with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. You won’t regret it – it is divine. The cookie is thick, chocolate-infused and dripping hot with chocolate sauce. Need I say more? Christopher H says it best. “Off the Ave has the best sandwiches in town, hands down. ask the How Safe Are The Foods and Drugs We Give Our Pets?

e have been seeing plenty of frightening warnings about food safety, drug withdrawals and vaccine scares since the New Year began and we have had many questions asking “what do I believe and do?” We want to believe the foods we buy for our pets are safe and healthy and that our veterinarians are only providing what our pets essentially need and that these products are safe. However, in this time of instant access on the internet, we are quickly discovering that it may not be as safe as we think. Let’s focus on commercial pet foods. All the slick advertising promotes these great, natural foods along with the energetic dog or cat on the label, however upon opening the bag, we don’t see those same foods. As a result of our pets repeatedly consuming these products, many pets become lethargic, overweight and sick with constant visits to the veterinarian. Does this make sense to you? Why is one major brand of dog food engaged in a class action lawsuit concerning pets passing away within hours of eating this food and yet there have been no recalls? We have an active case of a client’s pet going totally blind in one eye with the other one also on its way as a result of being fed this type of food after only after a few days. After chang-

ing the pet’s diet to an all natural and real food diet, the remaining eye with partial vision is already improving. Why is another major brand in a class action lawsuit for mislabeling their ingredients? Who is watching the henhouse? Let’s also look at vaccinations. Fifty years ago puppies were only vaccinated for approximately four diseases and cats did not require any. Today our dogs are vaccinated every six months for all kinds of prevention, however, the submissions to the FDA conclude that most vaccines are only about 5% effective. If your pet has only a 1 or 2% chance of getting the disease naturally, is there a real benefit? We also must consider the warning insert you never see that lists all the possible side effects including allergy, scratching and itching, joint problems, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, blindness and death. Is it worth the risk and ask yourself, why didn’t my veterinarian advise me of these health risks before recommending and administering them. Aren’t veterinarians legally obligated to do so under informed consent? Look at the prescribed drugs. Were you aware that most of these drugs are NOT approved for animal use and that there really are no set dosages? Did your veterinarian even give you the drug warning insert? That insert

is legally to be given to the client and to be explained if there are questions? Finally, take a quick look at antibiotics. They are routinely prescribed as a preventive to infection when in fact that method is NOT an approved use and when used this way can cause more harm than good. We are told that home prepared meals are not balanced, that raw foods are unhealthy, that natural herbs and botanicals are unsafe yet the modern processed food and drug industry has only been around for a hundred years or so. Our pets and families survived from the beginning of our time before all drugs and pet foods. We need to look at what is natural in nature, not live under the fear that every being will die without vaccines, drugs and “special diets.” Do you trust the drug and food companies or the medical community more than you trust yourself? A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... “Happy Trails To You, Until We Meet Again!” They say all good things must come to an end. As we near the five year anniversary of this column, it is now time to retire my plume and ride off into the sunset. My decision to end my column was not an easy one. As evidenced by the substantial amount of hilarious and painfully true material, there is plenty to write about each month. But with my extremely busy schedule and my desire to pursue my other passions, I am finding it harder and harder to make the time to create witty and sometimes very personal accounts of the shenanigans of being single in South Florida. It has been a great run for nearly half a decade. There have surely been some unforgettable tales. Many of my monthly columns have been controversial and I am often challenged about their authenticity. I am continually asked “Is this real or did you make it up?” As I have said time and time again, many of these accounts are so far over the top and insane, I couldn’t make them up if I tried. I have first hand witnessed the dating plight of my peers and have personally survived many of these dating nightmares myself. Case on point- the single world can be a total “sh$% show.” Since this is my very last column, it’s only fitting to establish a Hall of Fame to recognize the dating debacles that are the true stand outs. As always, I will maintain anonymity to protect those who were brave enough to share their anecdotes. Be assured that witness protection will remain in effect always, even long after this column fades to dust. These brave souls know who they are. You my friends, are about to be inducted into a very illustrious group. Like the Marines Corps; you are the proud, the few. Without further adieu... I have personally experienced the ups and downs and the highs/lows of being a single girl. I have also been fortunate to share many a chuckle with my dear friends who have supplied me with the most amazingly horrific and hilarious accounts along the way. Much gratitude to my parents, who continue to serve as the President and V.P. of my fan club. They have been the greatest supporters of not only my writing (sharing my articles with everyone they know), but of everything I do. They rescue us…

My wife and I love animals. We have birds, have cared for cats and have a soft spot for Hopkins, our son’s bearded dragon.

But we have a special affinity for dogs, especially rescue dogs. We are firm believers in the saying that first we rescue them, but they end up rescuing us. A number of years ago we adopted Casey, a gorgeous golden retriever from Everglades Golden Retriever Rescue (www.egrr. org) a magnificent organization that does great work. A little while later, we came home from the Delray Affair with Randy, a Chihuahua mix that we adopted from a booth run by the Animal Rescue Force (www.animalrescueforce.org). Randy has become a Facebook sensation and has given us more joy than we can ever express.

When Casey passed, we went back to ARF and rescued Sophie, another Chihuahua mix who was found roaming the streets of Miami. She was a tough little girl, but was very loyal and loving to us. We lost Sophie when she was attacked by an unleashed dog around the block from our home. It was a traumatic experience, but we were grateful for the time we had with her. So Randy was a lonely guy until a few months ago when we made the acquaintance of Golden Retrievals, a Boca based

non-profit that rescues Goldens, which has always been a favorite breed of mine. Thanks to our friend Kelli Freeman we got connected to Golden Retrievals and its wonderful founder, Linda Ripps. When she brought us “Teddy” we fell in love instantly and so we added him to our hectic, but enjoyable lives. Randy has adjusted and still gets his share of car rides, walks and social media time. Teddy seems really happy and we absolutely adore him. He’s a wonderful personality and a beautiful, beautiful golden with the typical great retriever personality. All of this is a long-winded way of saying that if you can and you’re thinking about it, take the plunge and rescue a dog or a cat. Birds are very cool too. At the very least, support a local rescue. Dezzy’s Second Chance (seen at the Delray Green Market during season) is another terrific group. They do the work of angels. But they need our help.
