welcome to the april edition of atlantic ave magazine

pril is a really one of the best months of the calendar in Delray Beach. Not only do we get to celebrate the Delray Affair but we also start to see the season transition into a slightly

slower spring and summer pace.

Of course, with the tourists and snowbirds heading out this is

the time when us year-rounders can reclaim the town and continue to support our local businesses.

I’m not one of the cranky types who bemoan tourists and

seasonal residents. They add vitality and life to our town and we

should be proud that we have created a place that attracts so many people of all ages.

And that’s truly the miracle of Delray isn’t it? We are appealing

THE HOME YOU WANT. THE LIFESTYLE YOU DESERVE. You worked exceptionally hard to earn your lifestyle. Atlantic One Realty Group understands this, which is why we take immense pride in representing our clients like members of our own family. We take the time to truly understand your needs. Only then are we able to provide the level of service you deserve. Our knowledge and relationships also gives you exclusive access to the best homes Palm Beach has to offer. THE HIGHEST STANDARD IN LIVING DESERVES THE HIGHEST STANDARD IN SERVICE.

CALL US TODAY, AND GIvE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO ExCEED YOUR ExPECTATIONS.

to all ages.

On Atlantic Avenue it’s not hard to find seniors walking along-

side young folks and families dining next to millennials. Very few places have this kind of widespread appeal, which was the goal when the vision was first forged all those years ago.

We should be grateful—and we are—to have a place to gather.

Delray’s downtown is the heart of the community, even more so than the beach, which is also wonderful. But many coastal com-

munities have great beaches, there are very few Atlantic Avenues and Pineapple Groves.

It’s nice to see the urbanism and energy spread south of the ave,

with new projects and nice to see interest in places such as Artist’s

Alley and North Federal Highway too. Even the Linton corridor has new life and serves as a nice complement to the downtown.

As we enter the slower spring months, do yourself a favor and

explore. There’s so much to see and do here.

In this issue of Atlantic Ave Magazine, we visit the new surf

museum, talk about what’s next in terms of city government and check in with our usual vast array of experts on all things good and healthy.

Dig in.

Have a wonderful April and

enjoy the Delray Affair.

Habitat For Humanity Of South Palm Beach Receives $5,000 State Farm Grant To Support Financial Fitness Workshops To Homeowners In 2015

State Farm Insurance has generously given a $5,000 grant to Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County to help fund a series of Financial Fitness Challenge workshops for local homeowners. Since its inception in 1991, Habitat has required all families to participate in financial literacy classes as they work toward homeownership. The classes are held monthly in Boynton Beach. Thanks to this grant, members of the general public may also attend these classes at no cost. “Attending the Financial Fitness Workshop taught me how to budget,” said homeowner Erica Health, who attended the workshops last year and has moved into her new Habitat home. “Now that I am a homeowner, I know how to prioritize my bills and have cut down on unnecessary shopping.” “We are very grateful to State Farm for funding this eight month financial education series. By educating families about financial literacy, we help them prepare for homeownership,” said Michael Campbell, Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County’s Executive Director.

“Before You Give Up, Do This…” And you’ll be surprised how simple it is…

Dear Friend, Some people come to my office and tell me they’ve “tried everything.” They come to me ready to give up. That’s right, four out of five people who show up in my office have taken “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that have only served to temporarily mask symptoms. But, that’s not what most people are looking for. Health (or the lack of it) very often has simple causes, and very reasonable corrections. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. But, before I tell you more, let me tell you something about me.

Here’s my story… “At the time, I’m an active, happy ten year old, and life is good. But then, it happens… I develop a painful type of headache known as ‘migraines.’ In my case it comes on suddenly. On a weekly basis I’m getting at least one migraine with pain so bad I have to go in a dark room, with no sounds, and pray when I wake up the pain is gone. The throbbing pain sometimes is so bad I can’t even think. I’m afraid I’ll do badly in school, be unable to do sports, and lose friends if the disability continues. After trying medication (one of the only options, according to the doctor) my parents and I decide against it. But, there’s more… A family friend convinces my family and me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then ‘corrects’ my spine (he tells me there’s nerve pressure on my neck going to my head). The correction doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and shortly afterwards, my migraines disappear. Oh, did I mention this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office, I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!” Let me tell you about Natalia, my girlfriend. For 5 years, she suffered with bad low back pain and restless pain in her legs at night. Since she was a nurse she saw specialists who ordered tests. They put her on powerful medications yet she still suffered. At age 28, after suffering for years, she started chiropractic care here, and the pain in her legs

is now only a rarity, and she has no low back pain at all. For the last 3 years, people from Delray Beach and the surrounding areas have come to see me with: • Headaches/Migraines • Restless leg syndrome • Chronic fatigue • Neck Pain • Shoulder/Arm Pain • Backaches • Numbness In Limbs • Athletic Injuries just to name a few…

Here’s some of your neighbors success stories: “I am feeling better on so many levels. I went in because of some back pain and after my treatments I found my general health improving as well! I’m very happy with the care I am receiving from Dr. Elan! (Joe Gillie, Delray Beach, FL) “This is the best thing I have ever done for my body!” (Rosanne Patsy, Delray Beach, FL) Special Offer - Look, I know you’re smart. You want to get to the cause of your problems, and not just cover them up with drugs. If you are one of the first 20 people to call and schedule a new patient consultation (before April 27, 2015) you will receive the consultation for free...But call right away because we expect to be flooded with calls as this consultation normally costs $100. Again, there’s

only 20 of these slots, so don’t miss out. (The patient and any other person responsible for payment has a right to refuse to pay, cancel payment, or be reimbursed for any other service, examination, or treatment that is performed within 72 hours of responding to the advertisement for the free, discounted fee, or reduced fee examination, or treatment.). Great care at a great fee… Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. I’ve been helping your neighbors here in Delray Beach for three years now. I have the low exam fee to help more people who need care. My assistant is Pam and she is a really great person. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee! Our office is called Schrier Family Chiropractic and it is at 315 N.E 2nd Ave., located in Pineapple Grove). Our phone number is 561-445-2648. Call Pam or me today for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. -Elan Schrier, D.C. P.S. Of course, all people respond differently to care, and no doctor can (or should) guarantee a successful outcome. But, if you’ve tried everything except chiropractic, don’t give up yet! P.P.S. When accompanied by the first, I am also offering the second family member this same consultation for only $17.

Kim Weiss knows that gratitude goes a long way. So far, in fact that it imposes an imprint on everything we do and say. It is gratitude and awe that inspired this South Florida native to create a book dedicated to the brilliance and majesty of the sunrises and sunsets she sees (and photographs) each day from her 14th floor condo. “Sometimes it feels like the sun is performing its magic just for me, sending me a message about life – a reminder that each day is unique and special.” It is the uniqueness of these ethereal skylines that inspired Weiss (a book publicist and writer) to add meditations and inspirational sayings to each page. The insightful quotes continued page 14

were written by writers such as Candace Bushnell, Jack Canfield, Marci Shimoff, John Bradshaw, Gloria Loring, Jean Houston and others. The book- that has nature’s brilliance in its effulgence on one side – has a saying for each picture on the opposite page. “No matter how dark the night, out of the billions and billions of stars it is always our own bright star that pierces the darkness and brings a new day,” said Richard Bandler on page 17. As a way of giving back (for the bounty she has received) a portion of the proceeds from sales of the book will be donated to AVDA. “I hope readers will experience that momentary whoosh of excitement, that ‘happy to be alive’ feeling, that nature inspires and that I feel when taking the pictures.” The book can be purchased online or at her website www.sunrisesunsetbook.com or call: (800) 441-5569.

Guests bid on a trip to New York Fashion Week, an Ezulwini Game Lodge South African Safari, the 2016 Robb Report Car of the Year Judgeship, a yacht charter from HMY Yachts and a once in lifetime experience package to solve a “kidnapping” mystery. To close out this fantastic evening, Danielle Hickox Moore announced a pledge from the Mary Alice Fortin Foundation to build an additional Club in Belle Glade, adding to the six school sites and Teen Center already in the area. This will create an even larger Boys & Girls Clubs presence in Belle Glade and will allow the Boys & Girls Clubs to impact thousands more of children’s lives who would otherwise be home alone struggling to do homework or care for siblings. Proceeds from the Spring Fling will support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County.

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in April for $50 or less.

L

aughing makes my world go round, and it should make yours, too. If you need a pick-me-up in the guffaw department, get yourself over to the library and Meet Dave Barry! April is National Humor Month and you’re invited to hang out with the Pulitzer Prize-winning and New York Times best-selling author as he chats about his latest book, “Live Right and Find Happiness (Although Beer is Much Faster), Life Lessons and Other Ravings.” This book was released just last month and offers a hilariously funny insight of what one generation can teach each other – or not. The event will include the author’s live presentation, audience Q&A time, and reception, so it sounds like you’ll be laughing from start to finish. Books will be available for purchase and, if you’re lucky, maybe he’ll autograph it with a funny written quip or seven. The event is held Thursday, April 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Delray Beach Public Library, 100 W. Atlantic Ave. Tickets are $35 per person and quantities are limited so act fast. Proceeds benefit the Foothold on the Future Campaign to Expand the Children’s Department, so your enjoyment and laughter benefits local tykes!

I

’m obsessed with dogs. Really. I used to cross streets just so I could pet them. My boyfriend told me that was a little creepy, so I stopped (kind of). Now, I try and learn to let dogs approach me so I don’t freak them out with my enthusiasm, but when there’s a ton of dogs in one location and within petting reach, it’s a free for all! April is National Pet Month but it also feels like Christmas because it’s time for the Delray Beach Pet Expo! Come out and support local animal rescues, adopt dogs and cats, enjoy live music, fun pet dem-

os, great food, shopping and more. There’s even a Sketch n’ Sip area where you can unlock your inner artist with the help of vino (they should rename this area heaven), a Pet Portraits area where, if you failed at the Sketch area, you can have a professional artist recoup your loses and Fido’s dignity, and a Pet Fashion Show area. Admission is only $10 and a portion of the proceeds benefit Dezzy’s Second Chance Rescue. The Expo is held at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts, 51 N. Swinton Ave., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. Please visit www.delraybeachpetexpo.com for more information.

N

othing says Florida sunshine like a straw hat, and nothing says party like a Delray Affair party! April is Straw Hat Month and if you don’t yet have a straw hat, get out there a get one because it’s essential to enjoy the largest arts and crafts festival in the Southeast United States. The 53rd Annual Delray Affair is back again, and is welcomed with open arms! Held April 10 through 12, the Affair is held along the palm tree-lined streets of Delray and is a mecca of all things artsy fartsy. Nicknamed the “Greatest Show Under the Sun,” the Affair stretches from the Intracoastal to N.W. Second Ave. and features a diverse mixture of fine art, creative crafts and jazzy products from around the world. You can literally find anything you need (within reason, let’s be honest) to decorate your home throne, boat, outdoor living space and more. You’ll find your-

self enjoying a tasty iced lemonade as you walk through the crowds trying to figure out whose art is going to be worth millions in the next few years… or that’s just me. The Affair offers visitors and residents a purely Floridian experience with a cool breeze, shining Florida sun, and art that beckons you to enjoy the finer things in life, straw hat included. The Delray Affair is held 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and don’t forget to enjoy the live music, too. Please visit www.delrayaffair.com or call (561) 278-0424 for more information.

L

ife’s a beach, but at least she’s beautiful! April is Keep America Beautiful Month and one of the non-profit’s programs is the Great American Cleanup, which is the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks off in more than 20,000 communities each spring that engages 2 million volunteers who create positive change and lasting impact in their own backyards. Lucky for us, the Parks and Rec department has once again set up the Great American Beach Cleanup so we can all get involved and clean up the beach we all love so much. Held Saturday, April 18 from 8 to 10 a.m., the Cleanup organizers invite you and your friends to meet at the Sandoway Park (just north of the Sandoway House) and grab a bag, gloves and bottle of water and get their litter-removal on. Dirty beach? Clean it up! I’ve participated in the Cleanup for the past couple of years and it is a very rewarding experience, and the Bloody Mary at Caffe Luna Rosa afterward tasted that much sweeter. (I like to reward myself for jobs well done, don’t you?) Don’t forget your sunscreen and bathing suit because the clean beach and cool surf will definitely beckon your name. The Sandoway House is located at 142 N. Ocean Blvd. Please visit www.mydelraybeach.com or www.sandowayhouse. org or call (561) 274-7263 for more information.

C

heese, queso, liquid gold: whatever you call it, this delectable goodness makes everything better. Literally everything – hangovers, Super Bowl, college in its entirety, steamy fondue date nights, and the list goes on. April is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month and with the multitude of decadent restaurants dotting the Avenue, there’s no shortage of the bread-cheese-bread threesome. First stop is Granger’s Grille where you can dive face first into the Glorified Grilled Cheese that features a combination of six cheeses for $7.50. But don’t stop there as you can tack on bacon, chili, broccoli, fried green tomatoes, fried bologna, tomato and/or jalapeno. Drool city here, folks. Next stop is DADA, where they invite you to plunge into the cascade of cheese that oozes from their 7 Cheese Grilled Cheese (cheddar, Swiss, goat, blue, sheep feta, American, provolone) with tomato bisque for $10.50. If you still haven’t hit your queso quota, next stop is Hudson at Waterway East where the truffled grilled cheese plays second fiddle to the Roasted Tomato Bisque, but is equally as mesmerizing and addicting, for $15. Whatever your guilty grilled cheese pleasure, the Avenue fits your needs so you can’t fit into your pants. Granger’s Grille is located at 215 N.E. Sixth Ave., DADA calls 52 N. Swinton Ave. home and Hudson at Waterway East is located at 900 E. Atlantic Ave.

The Alzheimer’s Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research, was the beneficiary of the Rita Hayworth Luncheon held on March 5 at The Colony Hotel, Palm Beach. This special fundraising event wasco-hosted by Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, the daughter of legendary movie star and dancer Rita Hayworth who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease, and internationally renowned designer Carleton Varney, who recently completed a $9-million “reimagining” of The Colony Hotel, a Palm Beach landmark for nearly 70 years.

More than 150 friends and supporters of the Alzheimer’s Association attended the luncheon, raising over $55,000 that will support the Association’s work locally as well as the nonprofit organization’s interna-

tional research and awareness efforts. “With the help of Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, the international community no longer seems to view this disease with the stigma that it once did,” says Mr. Varney. “I personally hope that we can build our network of benefactors so that next year in Palm Beach we can hold an even bigger Rita Hayworth Luncheon.” Highlightsof this year’s lun-

cheon included an exclusive preview of the Naeem Khan Pre-Fall Collection presented by Saks Fifth Avenue; a personal appeal from longtime music industry insider Bill Dugan, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2012; and Maria C. Carrillo, Ph.D., the Chief Science Officer at the Alzheimer’s Association, who discussed the global landscape of research investigations and funding opportunities.

April 3 How furious are we? Actually we are rather sad. “2 Fast 2 Furious 7” marks the last screen appearance of Paul Walker, who was killed halfway through screening of this sequel, helmed by James Wan (“Saw,” “The Conjuring”). The setting returns to Los Angeles. Also returning are cast regulars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto; Michelle Rodriguez as Letty; Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pearce and Ludacris as Tej Parker. The setup is that Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) is seeking revenge for the death of his brother Owen from the previous episode. Clive Owen stars as a fallen warrior Raiden in “Last Knights.” Raiden rises against a corrupt, sadistic ruler (Aksel Hennie) to avenge his dishonored master Bartok (Morgan Freeman). Kazuaki Kiyia (“Goemon”) directs a story by Michael Konyves (“Fire and Ice”). The rating is R for violence, of course. April 10 Ready for another Nicholas Sparks tearjerker? “The Longest Ride” is based on the Sparks’ novel of the same name, directed by George Tillman (“Faster,” “Notorious”). Scott Eastwood stars as Luke Collins, a former bull-riding champion looking for a comeback when he meets Sophia Danko (Britt Robertson), a college student about to embark on her dream job in the New York City art world. Jack Huston is Ira, who inspires the young couple with fond memories of his romance and long marriage. Oona Chaplin, Alan Alda and Lolita Davidovich co-star. File this under fantasy. Pierce Brosnan stars as King Louis XIV in “The Moon and The Sun.” King Louis wants immortality, and he intends to take it by stealing the life force of a mermaid (Bingbing Fan). William Hurt plays Pere La Chaise, Benjamin Walker is Yves De La Croix and Kaya Scodelario is Marie-Joseph D’Alember. Sean McNamara (“Soul Surfer”) directs. April 17 Have you ever been “Unfriended?” Terror stalks the Internet in the hor-

ror flick of the same name. A message by Skype from a vicious bully who created a shaming video and killed herself a year earlier lets six teens know they are next. The cast includes Shelly Henning as Blair, Renee Olstead as Jess, Will Peltz as Adam, Jacob Wysocki as Ken and Matthew Bohrer as Matt. Levan Gabriadze directs. The title “Child 44” sounds ominous. Tom Hardy plays Leo Demidov, a disgraced member of the military police charged with investigating a series of grisly child murders in the Stalin era USSR. Naomi Rapace is his wife Raisa. Gary Oldman is head of police Gen. Mikhail Nesterov. Daniel Espinosa (“Easy Money”) directs a cast that includes Charles Dance, Jason Clarke, Vincent Cassel, Tara Fitzgerald and Paddy Considine. Richard Price’s script is based on Tom Rob Smith’s novel. Expect more of the same in “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.” Kevin James rides his Segway again after his 2009 comedy was an unexpected hit. This time he goes to a security guard expo in Las Vegas with his daughter. He is mocked by casino security until he steps in and lends a hand to thwart some dangerous art thieves. Andy Fickman (“Parental Guidance”) directs and the cast includes Molly Shannon, David Hennie, Raini Rodriguez, Eduardo Verastegui and Nicholas Turtorro. The title “Monkey Kingdom” is self-evident. This sixth documentary from Disneynature is helmed by Mark Linfield and Alastair Fothergil, who are old hands at the nature genre (“Chimpanzee,” “Earth”). The story follows the relocation of Maya, a blond bobbed monkey, through the dense jungles of South Asia, with many perils along the way. April 24 “The Age of Adeline” stars Blake Lively as a woman who ceases to age after a serious accident. In her new immortal state, Adeline has adventures all across the 20th century. Lee Toland Krieger (“The Spec-

tacular Now”) directs, and the cast includes Ellen Burstyn, Harrison Ford, Amanda Crew, Michael Hulsman and Kathy Bates. Newcomer Pepper Flynt Salvati is a seven-year-old “Little Boy” who will do anything within his power to end World War II and bring home his dad. The writer-director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde of the Smithsonian Institute leads a prestige cast that includes Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson, Kevin James, Ben Chaplin, Michael Rappaport and Cary Tagawa. Buckle your swash Russell. “The Water Diviner” stars Russell Crowe, who also directs, as Australian farmer Joshua Connor, who in 1919 took off in search for his three missing sons, last seen fighting against Turks in the bloody Battle of Gallipoli. Up arrival in Istanbul he meets Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko), a pretty hotelier who is raising a son alone. He also meets Ortun (Dylan Georgiandes), who befriends him and Major Hasan (Yilmaz Erdooan, a Turkish officer) who fought against his sons and may be his only hope of finding them.

Conservative and Non-Invasive Treatment for Hip Pain

{

BY DR. TRAVIS LAMPERSKI

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, more than 285,000 total hip replacements are performed each year in the United States. As many as 60 percent of patients who opt for hip replacement surgery will end up with clots in the deep veins, clots which pose a serious risk of death or disability. More conservative, cutting edge options for your hip pain are available.

Hip complaints are a big reason people seek medical help and our office sees its share of patients suffering from some type of hip pain. A majority of hip pain results from recent or past injuries such as falls, sports injuries and motor vehicle accidents. Patients that suffer from acute or chronic hip pain don’t always have isolated direct hip involvement; in fact, rarely the hip joint itself is not the main contributor of the pain. Pain can often be caused by narrowing disc space in the low back and areas like lumbosacral joint, sacroiliac regions, piriformis muscle and bursas. If these secondary areas are ignored, total resolution of the pain in unlikely. Anatomy of the Hip The hip joint is labeled as a ball and socket joint much like the shoulder. The ball portion is made up of the top (head) of the thighbone (femur) and the socket is formed by an area of the pelvis called the acetabulum. Within the joint is a ring of cartilage called the labrum that surrounds the

46 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

acetabulum and provides a smooth surface and forms a fluid seal for proper joint lubrication. Muscles, ligaments and tendons are responsible for keeping the joint stable and functioning pain free. What causes hip pain? Hip pain can be the result of a number of injuries or conditions. Some of the specific conditions that affect the hip include the following: Osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis also known as “degenerative joint disease” is one of the most common causes of hip pain in elder adults. Arthritis means “joint inflammation”. Inflammation and injury to the joint causes a breakdown of the ring of cartilage discussed earlier and eventually, your cortical bone that lies under the cartilage rubs together producing pain, swelling, decreased painful range of motion and at times deformity. Some risk factors such as being overweight, age, improperly treated injuries, muscle weakness and poor biomechanics increase your chances of developing hip osteoarthritis. Bursitis A bursa is a saclike structure between the skin and bone or between tendons, ligaments and bone. Bursae are lined by synovial tissue which produces fluid that lubricates and reduces friction between these structures. Often these bursas can become inflamed, producing pain and swelling, leading to a condition known as Bursitis. Bursitis of the hip is a very common cause of hip pain. Sciatica Sciatica hip pain is an excruciating and often times debilitating condition that millions of people suffer from each year. Hip pain

from sciatica is extremely common. The sciatic nerve begins in the lower back and runs through the buttock and hip to the foot. Several spinal disorders can produce nerve compression creating pain into the hip region with spinal stenosis and disc compression being the most common. Conservative, Cutting Edge Treatments After a proper diagnosis, treatment is aimed at restoring function to the area that is producing the hip pain. Multiple cutting edge treatments include non-surgical spinal decompression, class IV laser therapy, Neurophysiologic rehabilitation and chiropractic manipulations. Decompression of the lumbar spine specifically L2-L3 will restore appropriate nerve flow by slowly lengthening and decompressing the spinal segments. Laser therapy is a medical breakthrough therapeutic device with unparalleled applications and treatment outcomes. The Laser works by converting light into biochemical energy, resulting in normal cell function, which causes symptoms (PAIN) to disappear. Laser can be placed directly over the hip region to reduce pain and inflammation. Performing specific neurophysiologic rehabilitation of the part of the brain that controls muscle tone of the hip flexors and extensors helps to create long lasting stability. Lastly, chiropractic manipulation of the sacroiliac and hip joints can aid in restoring proper biomechanics and hip motion. Arrividerci Acne! By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

IPL Acne Therapy – Intense Pulse Light Are you saying to yourself, “Shouldn’t I have outgrown this stuff a decade ago,” or “I’ve tried everything and I still can’t get rid of it,” or “Retin-A works, but it burns my skin and makes me peel?”

Thanks to technological breakthroughs, we can finally bid farewell to Acne, as well as to all of the burns, peels, and hot frustrations. IPL Acne Therapy is an effective new “laser like” light-based treatment that is currently revolutionizing the treatment of acne. Intense Pulsed Light or “IPL” therapy destroys the most common bacteria causing acne, Propionibacterium. IPL clears acne without drugs, without pain and without downtime! There are no antibiotics to upset the stomach, no topical Benzyol Peroxide or Retin-A to peel and burn skin, and NO injections into painful cystic lesions. Here is how it works (a little biology and little physics): IPL acts by what dermatologists refer to as photodynamic therapy. In a typical acne lesion (pimple) there are two main issues. One is a blocked pore with the back-up of sebum (skin oil). The other is the Propionibacterium or P. acnes for short. P. acnes love to feed on and multiply in that backed up sebum and create an inflammatory mess. Thankfully, while P. acnes indulge on all that skin oil in blocked pores, the bacteria is also producing a molecule that can be targeted by certain wavelengths of light. When P. acnes absorb this wavelength of light, emerging from a hand held device that is moved around a patients face, they create a lethal singlet of oxygen within the microorganism itself, resulting in the selective destruction of the bacteria, and sparing EVERYTHING else around it. The nitty gritty details are complex bio-physiochemistry, not pleasurable reading for the 48 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

consumer, but trust the doctor, this is a safe and easy treatment that brings positively enchanting results. Not only does IPL have FDA approval for acne but because of its safe and effective profile, it also has gained FDA approval for the treatment of age spots, Rosacea, spider veins and many other skin lesions. Intense Pulse Light is one of the safest acne treatments available, with no known side effects. A single IPL session for the treatment of one’s entire face may take only as long as twenty minutes. Patients should expect to leave the office looking a little red for an additional twenty minutes, during which time

one should plan to keep out of the sun. IPL is not a single treatment, but a therapeutic process. Clinical studies indicate that a protocol of two treatments per week for about four weeks will yield the greatest results. Finally, that long sought after relief from acne with the most proven, safe, effective and FDA approved IPL treatments available. Shouldn’t you send Acne packing once and for all? Dr. Thomas C. Seven terrible foods for your teeth – and they’re not candy!

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

Sugary sweets aren’t the only enemies of teeth

Sweet as Sugar We’ve all heard it since we were little kids: Sugar is going to rot your teeth! But why has the focus always just been about sugar? Sure, it’s easy to stomach that sugar is the main culprit of cavities galore, but what exactly is it about sugar that is bad for teeth? Bacteria that resides in our mouths have an easy (and enjoyable) time breaking down lots of different types of sugars and turning it into, ultimately, acids. Acids can decalcify or demineralize teeth and take away the structural content by eating away at tooth enamel, which then causes dental decay. The visible parts of the teeth are usually pretty safe from these acids because they can be washed away with water or when you brush your teeth. However, there are more problems lurking when sugar and food get trapped in the crevices of the teeth because bacteria have more time to feed on them. So if you think you’re safe by avoiding just sugary candies, think again! There are less obvious offenders and can include sticky, starchy or hard foods that can just as easily damage your chompers. Seven Food Don’ts 1. Popcorn Kernels – Yes, popcorn is admittedly super tasty and low-cal, making it an ideal snack, however, these little kernels can wreak havoc on your smile. Unpopped kernels can break teeth, especially if there are fillings involved. Additionally, if you happen to get a hull stuck in your gums or between teeth, it may stay there until it becomes very irritating, causing damage to the gums. Especially avoid caramel popcorn. It’s sweet, chewy, sticky and can be hard, which all point to damage. 2. Citrus fruits – Grapefruit, lemons and oranges are all packed with numerous health benefits, however, if you frequent these fruits, you are exposing your teeth to acid upon acid 50 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

that can erode tooth enamel. Don’t avoid these foods as the health benefits are worth it, but just make sure to brush after enjoying. 3. Sports drinks – It’s super important to stay hydrated, especially living in the Sunshine State, but water is a better option when compared to sports drinks or even sodas. Not only do these drinks contain a lot of sugar, they are typically enjoyed over a long period of time (sports game, lunch, etc.). The sugar is converted to an acid by the aforementioned bacteria, which dissolve the teeth to form cavities. Electrolytes are great, so if you’re going to drink sugar-laden drinks, enjoy them quickly and finish with a swig of H20. 4. Ice – If you’re looking for a crunchy snack that doesn’t include calories, ice might seem like a good option. However, chewing on hard substances can leave teeth vulnerable to dental emergencies and can damage enamel. If your teeth are worn or chipped already, the ice can crack and damage the tooth structure even more. 5. Potato chips – Even though potato chips are a delicious gift from the heavens, steer clear of them if you’d like to maintain healthy teeth. Potato chips are filled with starch, which tends to get trapped in your teeth, especially if you’re a fan of the wavy chips. So if you pop open a bag, make sure to floss and brush to remove all of the food particles that can lead to plaque buildup. 6. Dried fruits – Raisins, dried plums, apricots and more are all delicious, but are very

loaded with sugar and tend to be very sticky. You think you’re getting your daily dose of vitamins, but you’re actually giving the bacteria in your mouth a long-lasting sugar party. Try and stick to fresh fruit, or just make sure to brush afterward. 7. Peanut butter – This is pretty much a staple for anyone in college, and even though it’s loaded with tons of protein and fiber, it’s super sticky and sweet and clings to your teeth the same way that candies do. If you can’t shake your PB&J lunches, or the latenight spoonfuls, just make sure to wash it down with a tall glass of water. Bye, Cavities! The moral of the story is that the more you pay attention to what you’re putting in your mouth, the better chances you have of avoiding cavities. It’s always better to be proactive than reactive, especially because it’s easier to maintain a healthy mouth than to try and get back to a healthy mouth once you have cavities, fillings, periodontal disease, etc. If you’re going to indulge in sugary, sticky, hard and starchy, make sure to do so infrequently and always follow it with water, floss and a thorough brushing of the teeth. Is Coffee The Key To Skin Health By Kristin Heather

{

Could your morning brew be the key to eliminating chemicals and other toxins in your body and healing your skin?

Considered one of the oldest medical techniques still in practice today, enemas have a long-standing reputation of improving digestive function, treating constipation and a myriad of other benefits. Now, coffee enemas are increasing in popularity as more holistic practitioners prescribe them for the treatment of fungal infections, chronic fatigue and even cancer. Dr. Max Gerson, founder of the Gerson Therapy model, was one of the earliest researchers to study the effects of coffee on cancer cells and other fungal diseases. Over the course of his research, Gerson discovered that the caffeine solution, when injected through the rectum, was able to stimulate the production of bile and expand the bile ducts. Additionally, it eliminated the toxins and stimulated the production of glutathione S-transferase (GST)— a powerful enzyme in the liver. The glutathione S-transferase makes up a group of detoxification enzymes which bond to toxins that are later flushed out of the system. Other scientists, like Dr. Lee Wattenberg have echoed Gerson’s finding by acknowledging that the substances found in coffee (kahweol and cafestol palmitate) are proven to detoxify the electrophiles located in the blood stream. Based on Gerson’s therapy regimen, terminally ill cancer patients were advised to perform coffee enemas several times per day to speed up liver activity, cleanse the colon walls, and improve digestion. “This treatment should be followed strictly, both in the clinic and later at home, for at least two years,” said Gerson. “The liver is the main organ for the regeneration of the body’s metabolism for the transformation of food from intake to output.” When cancer patients undergo chemother52 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

apy, their body’s ability to combat toxins is severely compromised. Since a regular enema treatment is held anywhere from 12 to 15 minutes and the body’s entire blood supply filters through the liver in three minute increments, the liver’s filtering agents are able to remove toxins and parasites from the bloodstream. Gerson’s finding revealed that regular use of coffee enemas by patients suffering degenerative diseases and acute illness were found to: • heighten cellular energy • improved tissue health • enhanced blood circulation • stronger immunity system • superior cell regeneration In the initial stages of the treatment, it’s common for “flare-ups” to occur as the flow of bile increases. Some have even reported nausea and vomiting as side effects. Practitioners point out that it’s crucial to use only organically grown coffee when performing these enemas because commercially grown beans contain chemicals which could cause damage to the liver. What’s the difference between colonics and coffee enemas? Although they’re sometimes used interchangeably, colonics do differ from coffee enemas in a few respects. Colonics are traditionally used to cleanse the bowel while enemas are used to accelerate the liver’s detoxification. Performing both colonics and coffee enemas can be harmful to the body so it’s typically not recommended. What is the connection to coffee, your colon and your skin?

Your skin is a reflection of your liver health. Although we don’t often connect our liver health to the health of our skin, understanding this connection is crucial to having skin that is truly healthy and not just constantly using products to make it look a certain way. When the liver is not breaking down toxins effectively or is overwhelmed the skin will act as a secondary detoxification organ. This can cause acne, hyperpigmentation, and scarring. Additionally, the liver provides energy on a cellular level. As the metabolic factory of your body the liver provides the skin cells the energy to function, which is critical to having healthy glowing skin. In conjunction with a holistically based lifestyle, including an organic diet and regular exercise, coffee enemas can be a powerful preventative agent against disease, based on Gerson’s research. While it’s important to point out that his therapy model has come under scrutiny by some medical professionals for its lack of independent testing, there are many individuals who swear by it and credit the alternative therapy to their improved digestion, increased energy and overall well-being. I believe that understanding how to keep our liver properly functioning also allows us to truly have healthy and beautiful skin. Pilates Over 50

{

By Krista McCarthy

Interestingly enough when Pilates was first invented it was for the rehab of injured soldiers during the war. As time went on Joe Pilates brought his work to New York City, and dancers came in with injuries for rehab, soon it was thought of as the exercise for dancers.

As time has progressed, I have discovered that Pilates is for everyone, especially living here in Florida. I have found that Pilates is “essential” for our “over 50” population. Over 80% of my clientele is 50 and over. Pilates can help anyone achieve good health and vitality at any age. While it has important benefits for all, Pilates is necessary as you age because as we grow older we start losing control and coordination of our muscles. As we age we need to make sure that we are keeping our bodies flexible after years of wear and tear, we need to do something to keep them mobile and flexible in order to keep up with our daily lives and enjoy the activities that we love to do. How many of us would love to have more rotation with our golf swing or tennis game? As we age we tend to get tighter plus we don’t work our feet enough, which can lead to not being balanced in our body. I have some clients that worry about getting down to the floor and not being able to get up. Pilates can help us with all of these things. Some of the problems we experience as we age include kyphosis (also called round back or hunchback), lordosis (commonly referred to as swayback or saddle back), lower back problems and frozen shoulder. By strengthening the muscle groups affected and increasing flexibility, Pilates can help relieve the pain that accompanies these ailments. Even those who have already begun suffering from osteoporosis can benefit from practicing a modified Pilates routine. Pilates also helps to prevent osteoporosis by increasing bone density. Keep in mind that it’s naturally important to check with your doctor first before starting something new. 54 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Pilates exercises can be performed at any level of fitness, so it is good for beginners and then work to a more advanced level. I promise that the exercises are gentle so you will be comfortable performing them! Some of the greatest benefits are the improvements to the joints not to mention neck, back and shoulder pains are alleviated in a Pilates program. Through Pilates, one learns to strengthen weak muscles and correct their posture. Even people who haven’t exercised for 50 years can achieve a degree of flexibility they have not enjoyed since their 20s! Besides the physical benefits, Pilates also helps re-

lieve stress and tension and learning how to breathe properly. As we age we increasingly need to keep up our strength and range of motion. If your spine is inflexible and stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young. -Joe Pilates Mintfit 111 ReFresh ReShape ReEnergize 111 East Atlantic Avenue Delray Beach 561-274-7477 www.mintfit.com

Is A Walk-in Treasure Chest…

by Trish Giando

If you love looking at tons of gems and jewelry without feeling pressure from salespeople, then Diamond’s East International is the place to be. This relaxing atmosphere is a breath of fresh air compared to that of many other wellknown jewelry stores in South Florida.

There are some new happenings this year at Diamonds East. Their recently remodeled store, has a beautiful, modern look with added showcases displaying the most gorgeous collection of dazzling inventory. I felt as if I was walking into a modern day “treasure chest” upon entering the store. I didn’t know where to look first as I perused the wide selection of sparkling diamonds, watches and jewelry surrounding me. All of the new displays were well lit and properly

organized for customer’s ease in appreciating the beauty of each piece. The ambiance felt similar to that of a high-end jewelry store except for one major difference, the family atmosphere created by owner, Ken, wife Samantha, Robert and his wife Liz. The confidence and enthusiasm emulating from these four people only confirms the great pride they have in their products. All are eager to help customers either shop for a new item or transform their

older items into something more up to date. You can see that they all strive to maintain a great balance of professionalism and friendship with their clientele. It is common knowledge that the current economy has had a great impact on many businesses with a decline in shoppers. Jewelry still remains to be a top contender for self-gratification and pleasure, however it doesn’t mean that shoppers are not on a budget. This is why Diamond’s East is the perfect place to shop. They are the largest jewelry wholesaler in South Florida which allows them to offer their jewelry at the lowest prices. “It is the transformations that really excite me, I take great pleasure in seeing the look of excitement on someone’s face who thought they couldn’t afford a new piece of jewelry.” said owner Ken Mordechai. Another unique advantage of visiting Diamond’s East is the creativity available from the talented jewelers on the premises for their customers to indulge in a most satisfying experience in achieving their own special piece. There are so many items to choose from in the store including brand new items, designer pieces, vintage, estate or the opportunity to have something newly designed or transforming any pre-owned piece into one that is more trendy. They even accept trade-ins on your old, broken or mismatched jewelry. Diamonds are everyone’s favorite. Here you will find all shapes and sizes. Browse the many bracelets, necklaces and earrings on display. You will find a unique collection of engagement and wedding rings along with many others. The jewelers at Diamond’s East can create whatever look you wish as well. They offer bridal education for all diamond buyers. “We know how intimidating it may seem to buy an engagement ring, and that is why we like to educate our clients on everything to do with the individual diamonds along with the setting as well.” said Mordechai.

Well-known at Diamonds East are the many timepieces both pre-owned and new. Choose from Swiss timepiece brands such as Rolex, Breitling, Cartier, Patek Philippe, IWC, Jaeger La Coulter and many more both for men and women. Diamonds East International’s watch collections have many styles to choose from such as sporty, contemporary or more formal. All of our watchmakers are CW-21 certified. Diamonds East is proud to be an Authorized Dealer for both Benchmark and Rubber B Official. “Benchmark wedding rings are crafted to perfect form, shape and purpose. Every angle has been designed from a concept, and built to perfection. The final presentation is only a mere reflection of the extraordinary manufacturing Benchmark possesses which has taken years to develop and perfect. Coupled with Benchmark’s outstanding Lifetime Guarantee, these rings will always uphold the appearance they were built to have.” “Rubber B is the ultimate strap for Rolex.

These “vulcanized rubber” straps come in a variety of colors in order to enhance the quality and beauty of many Rolex watches. Diamonds East offers a complimentary installation of any Rubber B strap purchased at their store.” Remember that preventive maintenance is important. They recommend that you get your jewelry polished and cleaned at least every 6 months to a year. All jewelry sold by Diamonds East International is guaranteed and repaired at no additional cost to the customer. On behalf of Ken Mordechai and the entire staff at Diamonds East International, please stop by and they will be happy to assist you with all of your jewelry needs! Diamonds East International 4251 N. TUNGSTON PLUMBING Clean Water And Good Plumbing By Diane Feen

{

pHOTOs BY MELISSA KORMAN

If you knew what was in the water supply you would most definitely give Daniel Wolfram a call. Wolfram is the one of the first people to find out that our tap water is filled with Chlorine, Fluoride and Chloramine.

Daniel, owner of tungston Plumbing

Although these additives are thought to clean the water we drink they have adverse affects to our health. They range from respiratory irritants to toxicity in our air and other negative side effects. But to most people the water they drink is of little consequence. “People spend thousands of dollars on air conditioners, ultra violet lights and air filters but don’t think about the quality of the water they use in their homes,” said Wolfram, who started out helping his father in the plumbing business before he could reach the sink. Though Wolfram is now one of the largest users of Environmental Water Systems® he came about installing these large water filters by happenstance. “I was working on a 62 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

home being renovated on A1A that had nine bathrooms. After I installed a top of the line bathtub we filled it up with water and the tub turned yellow. That’s when the owner asked me about water filters.” It was after installing these water filters in people’s homes and businesses that Wolfram realized that using a EWS water system keeps appliances working longer (especially water heaters) and it prevents your skin from absorbing chemicals into your body. But one thing Wolfram wants people to know is that he is a master plumber, not a water filter salesman. “I have had to go into homes after other plumbers and fix the water filtration system so it worked correctly. I have put them in over 100 homes in the last six years.”

Wolfram has done a lot of plumbing jobs – large and small – since he was a kid. As a matter of fact, he was the youngest Master Plumber licensed in the state of Florida. Not only was he shining copper fittings at the age of five in his father’s plumbing business, but he spent afternoons at a vocational school learning plumbing. “I’m not good at spelling or writing and I didn’t want a desk job. I always knew I wanted to be a plumber.” So that’s what he did. He got an engineer and plumbing degree from Alfred State College and began working for his father’s East Hampton Plumbing business. Nine years ago he took his experience (and expertise) to South Florida and started Tungston Plumbing. His clients could not be happier. “I feel like I can trust Tungston Plumbing. They give the best quality, service and knowledge for the money. I have been using Daniel for six years,” said Brad Roberts, a property manager for upscale homes. Roberts isn’t the only one who knows that an owner-operated plumbing business is often the best one to hire. Brandi Sodi can’t say enough good things about Wolfram. “He is super knowledgeable, super reliable and always wants to help. Daniel did all the plumbing in our house when we renovated it and he did an amazing job. No job is too small for him; if a toilet seat breaks or if there’s a leak he will come right over.” Tungston uses licensed and insured plumbers for both commercial and residential work and is so well respected he does plumbing for builders such as Seaside, Dovetail, bluVenture Group and Castle. Wol-

fram and his team are not only knowledgeable, but they understand residential-system design and Code Requirements. Aside from big jobs they also fix clogged drains and toilets, leaks, boiler maintenance and repair, faucets, fixtures, remodeling, water heater repair and replacement and other plumbing related emergency and non-emergency jobs. “We stand behind our work and everything is guaranteed for a year. We are not a large company and have a low overhead so we can keep our prices low. I have worked in large estates with high profile clients and everyone is happy with our work,” said Wolfram. They are also one of the few companies specializing in home water filtration systems that will save you money, provide uncontaminated water for cooking, bathing and drinking. Just ask Sodi. “I used to buy tons of bottled water for my family and I wanted my children to be healthy. So Daniel installed a water purification system in our house. I absolutely see a big difference in our lives. My hair and skin are less dry and our water doesn’t have a film over it. I am so happy we had the system installed.” According to Wolfram the EWS filtration has a charged carbon system similar to the ones used for kidney dialysis. “Your clothes won’t fade, your washing machine will last longer and you don’t have to change the filter for seven to ten years,” said Wolfram, who also has a celebrity clientele. Tungston recently did all the plumbing for a build-out of a veterinarian clinic. “They did all our plumbing, including the wet tables, dental lab, grooming area and tankless water heater. They were prompt, honest, reliable and competitively priced,” said Craig Douglas, owner of Village Square Veterinary Clinic. What are you waiting for – give Wolfram a call. Spectators had the opportunity to watch Ivo Karlovic win the singles tournament, the Bryan Brothers further solidify their status as the world’s No. 1 men’s doubles team in winning the doubles tournament, and Team International trump Team USA for the ATP Champions Tour title. In addition, fans jammed to local artists/ bands, dined on delicious on-site cuisine and enjoyed top tennis matches. Opening night kicked off with a Draw Party hosted at Salt 7 and Valentine’s Day included a romantic dinner on-site followed by the evening’s ATP Champions Tour matches. On Sunday, tennis players enjoyed an hour-long clinic with the legends of the ATP Champions Tour: James Blake, Brad Gilbert, Justin Gimelstob, Goran Ivanisevic, Mikael Pernfors and Mark Philippoussis. Clinic participants were able to engage and receive tips from the legends. The start of the ATP World Tour was not a quiet one, as children were welcomed to the USTA Kidz Day on Presidents Day for

some friendly competition. Two of the Delray Beach Open’s nonprofit partners, National Parkinson Foundation and Ukulele Kids Club, brought families to join in on the fun and cheer on the kid’s tournaments. The week of excitement continued with a Chamber Bash that brought together local businesses with catering provided by City Oyster, Shake Shack, Salt 7 and Ziri. Guests at the Bash were then invited to watch the night match. Guests who attended the Ladies Day Luncheons were able to check out Midas Diamonds and Ulysse Nardin timepieces and meet several ATP pros while being wined and dined before watching the pros play. Attendees also participated in the FastServe Challenge, kept eyes and eared peeled for the VolleyGirls promo squad and viewed several rare Porsches on display. All guests had the opportunity to be treated as VIPS at this year’s tournament as many enjoyed watching the matches from the the on-court “Best Seats in the House” and the Champion Porsche convertible.

Happy Birthday Marina del Rey BY STEPHEN CHRISANTHUS

{

Delray Beach supports Marina del Rey, CA in celebrating their 50th Anniversary.

Our beach buddy from the West Coast, Marina del Rey, is turning fifty years old this month and Swinton the turtle of Delray Beach will be there to help them commemorate this important milestone. This beautiful seaside community, which is neighbor to famous Venice Beach and Santa Monica, and is only 4 miles from Los Angeles International Airport, has been called the crown jewel of Los Angeles County. Boasting the largest man-made marina in the United States, it’s no surprise that this grandioso birthday party on the water is one not to be missed. Just a little over a year ago the Beach Buddies met for the first time out west, and a coast to coast friendship was born. Marty the Pelican, their mascot, then flew east with the Marina del Rey Conventions and Visitors Bureau, and they fell equally in love with our enchanting little ocean town as we did theirs. The cross country, cross marketing campaign that followed continues to grow. Primarily social media based, the campaign has garnered media for each other on both coasts, showcases each other on our respective websites, collaborates on hotel and vacation packages, and keeps Marty and Swinton showcasing attractions. This all helps increase awareness and tour-

ism for each other. Now that’s a friendship! Their big celebration will kick off Friday April 10th with a sunset media reception followed by a Three Dog Night concert and firework show. A select group of east coast media will be making the cross country flight to cover the event and experience all that Marina del Rey has to offer. “It’s a great opportunity for our buddy out west to get coverage in east coast publications that they normally wouldn’t,” explains Stephanie Immelman, Executive Director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative. But this certainly isn’t a one sided friendship. Capitalizing on the excitement and energy this momentous weekend is sure to exude, Swinton will be taking Marty and some of LA’s key media back with him for three days of fun and activities in Delray Beach, thus garnering stories in west coast publications. Helping each other reach other markets to increase visitors in their alternating off seasons is one of the main

reasons this cross marketing relationship was built. “As our Delray to del Rey relationship continues to grow so do the opportunities to help one another accomplish our marketing goals,” proclaims Immelman. Edge Automotive Your Time Is Important! By Trish Giando

How does one feel when their car is malfunctioning? Many feel a sense of panic and vulnerability as they set out to seek a quick solution without being at the mercy of a dealership or auto repair shop. The sense of urgency can be compared to that of one having an illness and being in dire need of a doctor.

In today’s busy lifestyle, most people do not have much time for any deviations from their daily routine. When you call Edge Automotive, you will be sure to have prompt results and no worries. In the past 8 years, Edge Automotive has grown to be a well-known one-stop automotive shop servicing Boca, Delray and the surrounding areas. Since its opening, Edge Automotive’s staff of ASE Certified and Master Technicians has doubled. This along with keeping up to date with technology has created the successful business that it is today. This state-of-the-art 6000 square foot facility, conveniently located in northeast 68 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Boca Raton has become a popular provider of auto repair to the private sector, businesses and local car dealers as well as many professionals from the surrounding hospitals. Throughout the years, word of mouth has provided a major contribution to Edge Automotive’s expansive clientele. As you enter the newly remodeled waiting room, you are greeted with bright colors, comfy chairs, an aroma of fresh coffee and the familiar smile of Robert Lanzet, the service manager for the past 4 years. Owner Mike Levy’s office is now fully visible where anyone is welcome to sit down and express their concerns directly with him as well. Levy’s, main focus is quality service and

customer satisfaction. Accessibility is also a very important factor. “I actually encourage my customers to call me on my cell phone. I feel that by keeping myself readily available, it gives my customers a comfort level in knowing that I am always there for them,” said Levy. Edge Automotive specializes in high-end foreign and domestic vehicles. “This business is respected by many, including the local car dealers that provide us with many referrals. We have the same factory capabilities and diagnostic technologies as a dealership, specifically Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, and Audi.” said owner, Mike Levy. Approximately 30% of his business is work-

ing on Mercedes and BMW’s. “No job is too big or too small here. All customers receive the same 5-star treatment,” said Levy. Here’s an example of what your experience at Edge Automotive would be if your car were to break down... You call the shop and if necessary, someone will come out and pick up the car wherever it is. Upon the car’s arrival at the shop, diagnostics will be run to pinpoint the problem and you will then be contacted either by phone or text with a summary and quote before any procedures are done. “Many times, I am communicating via text per customer request. This method is preferred with many of my clients that are physicians who cannot be interrupted and find texting to be a major convenience. Some clients I never even see, we pick up their car, text them a quote, do the job whether it is a repair or preventive maintenance. Once done, we wash and test drive the car and can even return it to the owner’s location. I take pride in test driving the vehicles myself.” said Levy. Many of the customers that I have observed while in the waiting room appear very relaxed with a sense of familiarity and satisfaction in this establishment. Both Mike and Robert are very accommodating and familiar with every client’s needs plus more. They not only know everything about their client’s vehicle but also treat everyone as if they were family offering any assistance necessary to provide them with the utmost satisfaction. Their goal is to make Edge Au-

tomotive a one-stop automotive shop. If you need body work, a new dealer key, an alignment, window tinting, battery or anything else to do with cars, Edge Automotive will get it done! The shop is also registered with the National Automotive Taskforce (NASTF) which is the organization that allows them the capabilities to work on theft deterrent systems such as alarms, anti-theft systems and related products.

Edge Automotive offers full preventive maintenance upon which they always check the vehicle’s factory requirements according to age and model in order to keep your car running properly according to the correct guidelines. For the past 2 years, the shop was awarded “Best Service Award” on Angie’s list. Here is what sets Edge Automotive apart from any other auto repair shops. You get the amenities of a large dealership with more personalized service and atmosphere. To sum it all up, Edge offers full vehicle maintenance, 24 hour towing, car rental, vehicle pick-up and delivery, complimentary vehicle wash, vehicle sales, a customer’s existing extended warranties are honored, plus the shop also sells extended warranties on the premises. They are also official tire dealers for Firestone, Bridgestone, and Toyo. Along with this, GoGreenTM Nitrogen inflation is available there as well. Elegant Men’s Clothing And Accessories

SWATCHES & RAGS By Diane Feen

pHOTOs BY MELISSA KORMAN

There are a lot of women’s clothing stores in Delray Beach. Maggie Dutton noticed that on her first visit to Delray from Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. But what she didn’t see were any upscale clothing stores for men.

It was then that Maggie decided to fulfill her long held dream of opening a clothing boutique for men with discerning taste and classy fashion ideals. “I am a girl from a small South Carolina town and I found my calling to be that of dressing a gentleman perfectly for any occasion,” says Maggie, who has worked in upscale men’s boutiques in The Carolina’s. Often times a dream needs a cohort to come to fruition. That’s why Maggie chose her good friend Kim Crain to be her partner in this new elegant store called Swatches & Rags. Kim has a fashion merchandise degree from Winthrop College in South Carolina and was a flight attendant. So she knows a lot about a well dressed man. As a matter of fact both Maggie and Kim are pros when it comes to finding elegant clothing and accessories for the gentleman who knows what first class really means. “Our vision is to bring Southern sophistication and style to South Florida by providing fine men’s clothing and accessories in a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere,” said Kim, who will immediately put you at ease with her Southern charm. You don’t have to tell local stockbroker Stephen about that. He’s found it out firsthand. “I have been shopping at Swatches & Rags since they opened and found there is nothing like this store in this area. Their clothing and accessories are superb. I bought shirts, a few sport jackets, Italian made shoes and pocket squares. I even bought a red sport jacket I am going to wear to the Polo matches this week.” 70 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

There are a lot of men who are excited about this new normal in retail. It’s as if Hollywood and Palm Beach had a love child and dropped it off in Delray. The store lives up to its reputation with upscale men’s clothing that is handmade or hand crafted from France, Spain, Italy, Sweden and Canada. But not just any clothing or accessories, Swatches & Rags takes a first class route to subtle refinement. Not only is the store filled with unique finds from all over the globe, but their fashion taste is unrivaled. Two-tone leather oxfords from Mezlan and Bacco Bucci set a standard of excellence in soft leather in regal

shades of brown, blue, tan, and gray. Made in Spain they also come in exotic skins. Think Great Gatsby meets Wall Street. As a matter of fact it was a pair of blue Bacco Bucci shoes that had Stacey and Greg Bereza rushing to Delray Beach before they caught their plane to Connecticut. “We were here yesterday and couldn’t stop thinking about the blue driving moccasins from Bacco Bucci so we came back before we left,” said Stacey from Fairfield, Connecticut. In keeping with their mission of first class customer service and personalized attention they offer in-house tailoring and custom-

made shirts from Stenströms of Sweden. You can choose from a swatch book of different colors and fabrics and their tailor will make sure the shirt fits and looks perfect. Sport jackets, suits and tuxedos can also be custom made for you by Hickey Freeman. They also carry a great selection of Hiltl cotton chinos and five pocket pants in the finest lightweight soft cottons tailored to perfection. Bright colored cotton cashmere sweaters sit nearby in bright colors coral, turquoise, magenta and indigo. Yes, you can wear bright colors and yes you can wear them year around. They also stock a complete selection of short sleeved knits shirts in all colors and woven cotton shirts that are elegant and tasteful. The blue and white check shirt from Stenströms has contrast collar and cuff and other elegant shirts hang nearby from Breuer of France. Some have simple hidden embroidery and all are in fabrics and colors not seen en mass. That’s why this shop is a must see for any discerning man who wants an elegant silk tie (or pocket square) from France or a pair of comfy sneakers with suede trim. “From a board room to a court room or a sporting event, Swatches & Rags provides gentlemen the finest lines and accessories. We always say, ‘Behind every well dressed man is a woman who knows how to dress him.’” They sure do. Both women have that irresistible charm and elegance that breeds in the South. They know what makes a man look like gentleman and how to get him there. But they don’t stop at just the outer manifestation; they offer underwear, socks, belts, swimsuits in wonderful prints and Italian sunglasses. If you were stranded on a deserted island chances are that Maggie or Kim would drop ship your bounty overhead. They will also offer you a drink, a comfy chair and polite chatter if you so desire. Stop by, they want to meet you. Swatches & Rags 900 E. Atlantic Avenue Delray Beach, Florida (561) 865-7230 swatchesandrags.com Come to their Hickey Freeman trunk show on April 22

‘The Best of Both Worlds’... ‘Cape Cod Kate’ is your Delray Beach/Cape Cod Connection

By nicol jenkins

{

Beautiful beaches, boating, fishing, golf, great restaurants, art galleries and a shopping experience unlike any other… Think I’m talking about the City of Delray Beach? Then, you are correct!

But I’m also describing Cape Cod, a peninsula in coastal Massachusetts of picturesque and historic villages. Like Delray Beach, Cape Cod and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket offer the same luxury and beach experience so you feel like you never left home. Why not live the good life all year round? Instead of freezing in the wintertime, enjoy the warm weather and balmy breezes in Delray Beach. And when it heats up too much in the summer months, cool down at your vacation home in one of the quaint villages of Cape Cod. Real estate professional Kate Rimkus is your connection between Delray Beach and Cape Cod.

72 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Kate is thrilled to have a home in Delray during the chilly months up North when real estate slows and to live the Cape Cod lifestyle the rest of the year. She is able to service most of her clients’ needs during her time here (isn’t technology grand?) and she is backed by a great team at Robert Paul to assist. If a face to face meeting with a client on the Cape is requested, it is only a 3 hour flight away. Kate would also be happy to meet with potential Cape Cod buyers here to discuss their goals. “Everyone I know who didn’t make it to Delray Beach this winter, wishes they had. I am encouraging them to come here to paradise. And of course, I think Cape Cod is paradise in the summer and autumn,” said Kate.

Kate Rimkus, a Realtor® with Robert Paul Properties which has been named the premier luxury property firm on Cape Cod and the South Coast of MA, loves working for such a respected company. Robert Paul Properties is a boutique real estate firm which provides concierge level service. The firm does not seek to be the biggest company but aspires to be the best. They are a company which provides extraordinarily intelligent advice and successfully guides each client to achieve their unique quest, and does so with consistency, while having fun. This is their vision. “We have just 65 agents on Cape Cod and the South Coast who sold over ½ Billion in 2014. We are by far the top agency for properties over $500,000, while our nearest competitor has 350 plus agents,” added Kate. “I am happy and proud to work for the two most respected names in Real Estate on Cape Cod, Robert Kinlin and Paul Grover, who expect the highest ideals in business from each of their agents to achieve their clients’ goals,” said Kate. Living in the Cape for many years, Kate has owned property across the Cape so is knowledgeable about its villages and many

amenities. In 2014 she sold the record breaker of nearly $4M for one of the “lower Cape” towns. With offices across Cape Cod and on the South Coast, recently opened offices in Boston and Cambridge and a marketing office in London, Robert Paul Properties and Realtor® Kate Rimkus are connecting the dots to where our clients come from. Hello Palm Beach County! A current listing for $25 million came from Palm Beach connections and the Boston office has already sold a $25 million property in 2014. Cape Cod’s recent market picture - while nationally, sales were down 2.1% and prices up 5%, Cape Cod was a story of 3 markets: lower end - under $500,000; higher end - over $500,000; and luxury - over $2 million. The higher end properties saw an increase in total sales of 5% with average prices increasing 2%. The luxury market, with a median of $2.5 million, jumped 31% in total sales without prices increasing. The “sweet spot” was in the $2M to $4M range with the number of sales increasing 40% (including Kate’s record breaker for one of the “Lower Cape” towns).

“One factor in this jump is the high net worth of generation X buying their first vacation home and coming in at a high price point. We expect a lively spring market after the unusually snowy winter. Activity is already increasing,” added Kate. “I’ve been told often by people here that I have the “best of both worlds” or “what a life – wintering in Delray and summering on Cape Cod”,” said Kate. When you are ready for the best in life, contact “Cape Cod Kate”! A Sweet Deal

DELRAY BEACH EXECUTIVE SUITES By diane feen Photos by Melissa Korman

{

Tracy and Mike Caruso recognize that small businesses need a comfortable, convenient and luxurious place to hang their shingle.

And with Delray Beach reaching the pinnacle of its success as one of the best places to live, play and work, there is a need for upscale offices that don’t take a “Shark Tank” investor to fund. That is why the Caruso’s opened DBES a year ago. “We were filling a much needed work-life style need for the modern executive and entrepreneur.” Most entrepreneurs know there are expenses when renting office space. There’s the cost of office furniture, high speed internet, phones, office cleaning, parking, up front personnel, a copier, “and, the most important thing many business professionals can’t live without …coffee!” The beauty of renting an office at Delray Beach Executive Suites is that each of these amenities (and more) is included. “You’re able to move into your office and start working the next day. Everything is being taken care of for you. There is a team of people in place, just waiting to help you with any possible work-related need.” The Caruso’s renovated the entire office from floor to ceiling and added state-of-theart technology. There’s also a traditional designer flair that is classy, inviting and intimate. There are dark wood grain porcelain floors, a conference room with cherry wood table, designer dome lighting, a 50inch cable TV (with HDMI ports) and video conferencing. But that’s not all. There is a professional elegant reception area that dispels any myths about old school office suites. There’s 74 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

One of the many beautiful office suites available

a leather couch, sophisticated artwork, and a receptionist who greets clients and helps to meet their needs. One thing is for sure, the Caruso’s are a class act. Mike has lived in Delray Beach for nearly 30 years and is a forensic CPA. He ran for mayor in 1989 and been a little league baseball coach (for 25 years) and scout leader. He serves on many boards, most recently as a WARC (West Atlantic Redevelopment Coalition) committee member. Mike’s love of Delray Beach is palpable and his diligence in making sure that Delray

Beach Executive Suites is first rate is obvious. Tracy, a native New Yorker, is equally as impressive. She has a background in corporate training, etiquette consulting, public speaking and has volunteered in the community. Together they are a powerful force. “We wanted to make a positive impact on the business community in Delray Beach. We’ve worked hard to redevelop the space, upgrade the technology, and create an excellent workplace environment for our tenants. We do whatever it takes to make our tenants happy.” said Tracy.

They sure do. Just ask anyone who has an office there. “The Caruso’s care about the property and their tenants and want it to be a professional environment. The space is centrally located, there’s free parking, Wi-Fi, a new copier and a great conference room. Not only that if there’s a problem they fix it immediately,” said Allison Turner, owner of Business Consultants of South Florida and Ambassador for the Delray Chamber of Commerce. Professionals like Turner are what you find at Delray Beach Executive Suites. Also in residence are a law firm, realtor, logistics engineer, architect, CPAs, and others. That’s why Tracy and Mike have set their sights on opening another executive suite in Delray Beach. They recognize the need for this type of elegant setting that sheds a positive light on small businesses. There’s also a side effect of this cohesive business setting. “Many of our tenants are members of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. They provide advice for each other and play off each other. We are proud of the synergistic mix of professionals here,” said Mike. There is another reason that this space is so inviting. Each person decides the décor and mood of his/her own office. There are no restrictions on lighting, furniture, artwork and designer touches such as plants. “We let our tenants develop their own space the way they are most comfortable. We don’t restrict what they put on the walls, the floor (they can put a rug down if they want), or when they come and go. This is their home away from home.” Tenants can also make their own hours. The front desk is manned (by a beautiful and helpful woman named Jazmine) from 8:45 am to 5:15pm. Tenants can come and go as they please, 24/7. There is a modern kitchen with complimentary coffee, purified water and a TV with cable. But what makes this professional space such a luxury (and a positive energy flow) is that the Caruso’s care about their tenants and the property. “A lot of people think this business is just a way of making passive income. Not true. This is not a side business, if you want it to be first rate. You need to be on top of things all the time. You give tenants your full-time attention and take care of their business needs so that they don’t have to.” said Tracy, who is the genius behind the décor of this polished posh space. If you don’t need fulltime office space there are other alternatives within the Delray Beach Executive Suites family. You can have a

Jazmine, Director of Marketing, welcomes you to Delray Beach Executive Suites

virtual office that comes with a receptionist, business phone number, mail and package handling, state-of-the-art conference room, prestigious address for business cards, use of the copier, conference room hours. Whatever your needs, they will make it work. The fees vary for specific packages, with rates starting as low as $75. There is another advantage to taking an office at Delray Beach Executive Suites – and it’s a no brainer. “Our first class office space is in the most sought after area of downtown Delray on Atlantic Avenue, We’re across from the South County Courthouse, The International

Tennis Center (blocks from I-95) and on the same street as all the places that make Delray Beach ‘America’s most fun small town.’” That is exactly what enticed lawyer David Beale to open his law firm there. “The staff here is friendly and helpful, it’s quiet and the management is very accommodating.” Who can ask for more? A Paradise For Women’s Clothing, Accessories And Home

MARGAUX RIVIERA

There are a lot of retail stores on Atlantic Avenue. And many are quite spectacular – but newcomer Margaux Riviera is a cut above.

You feel it the moment you walk through the door. It’s an ethereal boost that embraces your being like a warm hug. For a fashionista it’s heaven on earth and for everyone else it’s a place you would approach like a museum. The difference, of course, is that at a museum you can look but you can’t touch. At Margaux Riviera you can touch, look and even purchase what moves your soul – or your torso – with bliss. As a former fashion editor I knew there was a heritage to this retail shop that evolved from the former site of Evolution. And, it turns out that Margaux Riviera is the sole property of quite an accomplished woman - Margaret Doerrer. Her fashion pedigree began in New York where she was a buyer for 76 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

an upscale retailer and continued upward to fashion merchandiser, designer and executive for global brands. Suffice to say that Doerrer knows what she is doing. She knows where to shop on a global scale (she traveled the world for her former clients), knows what to buy and has a way of putting it all together like a svengali would its prized protégé. “My vision was to replicate a Beach Resort by having a little bit of everything from swimwear to skincare.” It seems that Doerrer’s fashion vision is 20-20. There is such an eclectic mix of merchandise that you could outfit yourself with everything from head to toe. There are sandals, dresses, bathing suits, elaborate beaded tunics, simple T-shirts, knit and woven pants,

shorts and dresses for all occasions. It’s not just the merchandise that will make you swoon for a credit card with no limit; it’s the uniqueness and presentation. Like a fine meal the entire store glows with just the right ingredients. A table made of teak is dolled up with a huge glossy sea shell with a sea fan holding colorful earrings. Below is a table filled with tiny seashells topped with colorful T’s and a small statue of Buddha. If you were to describe this visual feast of

unique swimwear from Australia, Brasil, France, Italy, spain and the US

clothing, accessories and home items it would best be described as Gandhi meets the French Riviera. There are dressy silk tunics with a Zen feel but also casual cotton print ones as well. Some things are imported from Europe and others are made in the US. “I like to feel that my merchandise goes from good to better to best. I travel all over the world picking out handmade sandals from Capri, beaded and fringed necklaces from England and embroidered linen tunics from Hawaii. But there are things here made in the USA as well,” said Doerrer who is adding a beauty bar for hair and make-up in the back. Let’s face it, Doerrer thinks big. She approached the creation of her new store as if its presence was as important as Versailles. The ceiling is an elaborate stained copper color with intricate trimming, and the shelves below are filled with colorful jewelry, handbags and hand printed stuffed pillows from France. There are also traces of the sea everywhere. Boxes (in large and small sizes) are covered with white seashells and serving plates and utensils have sea-full themes. Some are embroidered, others are painted by local artisans and others are adorned with jewels. But they all have one thing in common – you won’t see them anywhere else. That’s what makes this new retail store such a terrific find. All of the merchandise is handpicked by Doerrer, who seems to understand the difference between average and sensational. She has combined colors, themes and styles in perfect harmony with both the interior of the store and the exterior locale. Christine MacDonald agrees. “What a wonderful boutique. The help was amazing and

the clothing is AMAZING! There’s so much for one to love.” MacDonald is right. There are hostess gifts such as scented candles, body lotions, room diffusers and sea themed serving dishes. There’s also a section in the back for swimsuits, beach bags and cover-ups. But they’re not your garden variety of swimwear and accessories. These are over the top in fashion and function. “We have SPF 50 protective clothing, tops and swimsuits for the beach,” said Doerrer as she pulled out a zip front SPF protective knit shirt from the rack. There are also subtle yet sexy chiffon dresses and tops (with and without embellishment) and color coordinated swimsuits with macramé, fringe and sequin trimming. “We have fun swimwear in all unique brands.

We also have mineral based suntan lotions and creams that won’t turn your skin white.” To make your shopping experience even more comfortable they have oversized fitting rooms with billowing chiffon curtains that will make you feel like you’re in a spa. And in a way you will feel like you’re on a mini-vacation from the norm - a world away from reality. Like all exciting treasure hunts there are many things to uncover and discover at this new boutique. And like all exotic locales you will never get bored with the view or the terrain at Margaux Riviera. Stop in and see for yourself.

Upon further examination, even the toughest jewelry critic wouldn’t be able to tell the difference from the higher end designer accessory. That’s the secret behind Barry Jays Faux Designer Jewelry located in Delray Beach. Owner and jewelry expert Barry Jay Diamond, hand selects each piece of jewelry from over 50 different jewelry manufacturers to replicate the designer counterpart at prices anyone can afford, starting at $25. “Most of the accessories in the store range from sterling silver, 14 carat overlay and cubic zirconia stones that look just like diamonds. I do not use crystals so all the jewelry looks real,” said Barry, adding, “The accessories are all new and like big designer jewelers. The pieces are lookalikes of the designer accessories. You can’t tell the difference!” That’s why customers keep coming back year after year, some for over 32 years since Barry has been in the jewelry business. His customers rave about the praise they get from friends and admirers of their jewelry, and enjoy the savings. Where you would have to spend in the thousands for the real designer pieces, you can find replicas at the local jewelry store for only $25 and up. “Almost 95 percent of my business comes from repeat business, if not more! Even my customers from thousands of miles away still come to Florida to come see me and shop for unique jewelry. Many come from Atlantic City and Philadelphia and many are Delray Beach residents,” said Barry. The jewelry aficionado sparked an interest in the jewelry business at a young age.

“I started working at just 9 years old with my father who owned six pretzel stands on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. At the age of 18 I got into the jewelry business as my father sold real jewelry and I learned from him how to merchandise. I got into the faux jewelry business in Philadelphia and opened a store in Center City and owned that store for 18 years. Then I decided to open a jewelry store on the boardwalk in Atlantic City and owned the store for 15 years. During that time, I would always travel to Delray Beach as a snowbird and I finally decided to make

the move down to Delray Beach for the rest of my life. I just loved Atlantic Avenue and knew I could still reach my regular customers and new clients in Delray Beach. Everyone comes to Atlantic Avenue for lunch and dinner and there’s a lot of traffic here,” said Barry. “My customers are my friends and they are like family! I do have the greatest customers!” Barry loves interacting with his customers, new and old, every day. He works as the sole operator at Barry Jays Faux Designer Jewelry Mondays through Sundays and knows every one of his customers by their first and last name. He will take extra time with each of them to get to know about their life and help them select a piece of jewelry that is just right for a specific outfit or a special occasion. Barry has worked on picking the jewelry for many wedding parties, birthdays and other life events. If he doesn’t have something in stock, he will even order it special for his customers. Many of his customers live out of state and he will customize orders for them and ship them directly to their homes. “I have been in the jewelry business for over 32 years. It is the interaction with my customers that I love the most. I love my customers, and they love me back! Jewelry makes

every occasion more special,” said Barry. “What sets us apart is that I hand select specific pieces and jewelry that no one can tell that they are not real. I research what is trendy and popular in jewelry and what people are wearing. If customers are looking for a specific jewelry piece, you will find it in my store!” said Barry. “What I find most rewarding is making my customers happy. That’s because this cycle motion madness is the greatest endorphin rush you can get (legally). Although it seemed like something only speed demons and overachievers do I realized this spinning craze had some real merit. And not because Jake Gyllenhaal, Lena Dunham and Katie Holmes do it, but because spinning is the greatest one hour workout on the planet. It’s fueled with music, motivation, movement, perspiration and inspiration and leads one to that sweet spot of well being. Both Susan Albinder and Linda Besman knew that a long time ago. That’s why they became fitness and spin instructors while they had jobs in the mental health field. Susan was a psychotherapist and Linda a teacher. Both women found they could help people through momentum rather than monotony. “Instead of helping people on a couch or at a desk I can inspire and empower them to reach their highest potential through spinning,” said Susan, who calls spinning a form of sweat therapy. Twin sister Linda had a similar revelation. After teaching in a private school she realized she was more inclined to help people raise their self esteem, con-

fidence and body image by way of physical fitness. Although she has been the fitness Director at both Gold’s Gym and LA Fitness she now works in tandem with her sister at PūrCycle in Delray Beach. The great thing about PūrCycle is that you can be a beginner or an advanced spinner and still take the same class. “It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress. We want you to be the most fabulous version of yourself, we have a motto, ‘Spin like a Rock Star – look like a Movie Star,’” said Susan. And it’s true. As a first time spinner I found the class to be absolutely electrifying. It’s like being at a night club without the cigarette smoke and banal conversation. Instead you ride at your own pace to upbeat music that moves your soul and body smoothly into a blissful state. There’s nothing like it. Just ask Blair Merriam who has been taking spin classes with Susan and Linda for seven years. “I come five times a week because spinning is the most stupendous aerobic workout you can do,” said Merriam as he glanced at his heart rate monitor screen that showed he burned 820 calories with a heart rate of 147. Merriam’s partner William Martinez has also been spinning for years. “This is the best exercise. It doesn’t hurt your knees, you can adjust the pedal speed and because of it I get to eat great food and drink great wine.” Martinez has a point. According to Susan, spinning enhances muscular endurance, is a good form of cardiovascular conditioning and detoxifies the body. You can also lose weight, relieve anxiety, stress, and it’s good for your heart. Despite all the great things that result from spinning in a darkened room with twinkling lights and voluminous music there is another aspect to this perpetual motion movement. “It’s very social here. We help you get in the

best shape of your life and we outline a meal plan, take measurements and encourage people who come here. We even send weekly inspirational messages and quotes.” They also make getting fit fun. Their “Little Black Dress Challenge” and “Beach Body Challenge” are just two ways they have of motivating people to feel and look their best. “We celebrate the completion of each challenge by giving prizes like free spin classes, massages and free dinners. It’s keeps people motivated.” They sure do. Every Saturday morning at 9 am they have a live DJ spinning music to motivate spinners toward gravity sourced nirvana. Both Susan and Linda (known as the Spin Twins) want to take the spinning phenomenon to the next level. “We not only have a DJ on Saturday morning but we have multi-sensory experiences using videos of exotic terrains and virtual rides through France, Switzerland and beyond. We go all over the world.” They also have charity rides for good causes such as a recent ride to support a local nonprofit, “Delray Students First.” They’re planning another charity spin soon to support an animal cause. Although owning a spin studio like PūrCycle has an outer manifestation of motion, Susan and Linda are also dedicated to its inclusiveness and intrinsic growth. “Our father, Dr. Irvin Besman always instilled in us the benefits of health and fitness. He also taught us that it’s important to be of help to others and to be kind and respectful. PūrCycle is a happy place.” Another person who helps make PūrCycle a happy place is instructor Tonette. She motivates, captivates and keeps an eye on her spinning brood. If you ask Spin enthusiast Mindy Gordon she’ll bestow the virtues of spinning and Tonette. “I’ve been spinning for 18 years and Tonette is the best instructor. Linda and Susan in the Lobby of Purcycle studio

Susan Albinder and Linda Besman, owners

Spinning is a great way to get a good cardio workout without getting bored. When you’re in a group it’s really motivating.” For businesswoman Donna Sauer it’s less about motivation and more about stress relief and cardio workout. “When the lights go down I can really relax, it’s the best use of my time. Whether it’s raining or hot outside I am getting the best cardio workout in the shortest time. Tonette is a great instructor.” Another plus is that spinners have the ability to hook up with a wireless heart rate monitoring system (called Performance IQ) that will show calories burned and heart rate. The classes also allow spinners to challenge themselves by hills, sprints and endurance rides followed by cycle stretches. After years of watching from the sidelines – and feeling like I had missed a spaceship going to a happy planet – I can now understand the excitement surrounding this fast paced sport. And so can Susan and Linda. “Our program blends science, spirit, strength and stamina with killer music, elite bikes and a team of motivating, knowledgeable instructors for the ultimate ride. special feature ║ The Original Popcorn House

The Original Popcorn House has just “popped in” your Delray Beach neighborhood By Nicol jenkins

Staff clad in bowties and fedoras welcome guests with a friendly hello and a sample of one or many fresh popcorn flavors, saltwater taffy, pralines and other sweets. From traditional favorites, movie theater butter, cheddar cheese and caramel, to unique recipes such as white chocolate oreo, spicy buffalo blue cheese, BLT, cool cucumber with lime, The Original Popcorn House has a flavor to satisfy anyone’s unique taste buds. Unlike movie theater popcorn, the staff at The Original Popcorn House pops and hand crafts each batch of gourmet popcorn in their kitchen “popping room” and serves it up fresh daily. Using only the finest and freshest ingredients, such as pure coconut oil, and only mushroom style popcorn, the taste and quality is truly gourmet. They also create new flavors each week with suggestions from customers. Besides the freshest popcorn, The Original Popcorn House also dishes out tasty treats, such as frosted pralines, served warm in a cone with a mix of almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts, cashews and peanuts too. Plus over 18 flavors of salt water taffy include cinnamon roll, frosted cupcake, mango peach and much more. SlushOur cheddar machines creating our Spicy Buffalo with blue cheese - a house favorite!

ies and soft drinks are also served. “Everything is gourmet. Each batch of popcorn and all of our sweets are served with only the highest quality ingredients,” said Jerri Witt, owner of The Original Popcorn House. Just like the name, the local business has that welcoming atmosphere of being at home. It is a family run and operated business with Jerri running the operations and her children hand crafting and serving the popcorn. “I want all my customers to feel like they just walked into a home, not a business. At The Original Popcorn House, they are always welcomed, greeted, and we take the time with them to make sure they get what they like. We

want our customers to know that they are welcome here. It’s a family greeting other families,” said Jerri. That was the goal when Jerri decided to open a family owned business in Delray Beach. While walking along Atlantic Avenue, she spotted the many ice cream, yogurt and macaroon shops, but coming from Chicago she couldn’t help but notice that a gourmet popcorn shop was missing. That’s when a light bulb went off and she decided to open a gourmet popcorn shop in Delray. The instant she laid eyes on the 1903 house for sale, she knew that was the perfect home for her new business. They renovated the home but still kept some old style charm.

Families who come into the store not only get a special treat but a family photo that Jerri hangs up on the wall of “family photos.” “I wanted to bring gourmet popcorn to Delray Beach, and I fell in love with the fact that it was a house. I like that it has a homey feel since it’s a family owned and operated business, and it gives a sense that we are welcoming people into our home,” said Jerri. Not only popcorn aficionados, but even those who are not big popcorn fans, will enjoy the taste of the gourmet popcorn and a chance to enjoy the fun atmosphere of creating your own popcorn flavor. “We have the ability to make over 200 different flavors, and at the store at any given time we have about 30 flavors and change them on a regular basis. We are not your average popcorn store. People are mesmerized when they see all the flavors. When they taste the popcorn, frosted pralines, or taffy, our best compliment is them coming back every week,” remarked Jerri. To impress your guests or co-workers, The Original Popcorn House can even custom make an order for you for a business event, birthday, wedding or party. They also make special gift baskets, t-shirts, hats and can ship anywhere in the US or Canada, in addition to offering hotel

and beach deliveries by texting to their mobile popcorn link! All their tips collected in the store goes directly to an employee’s charity of choice for that month. “This is our family business and our goal is to become a destination location where everyone who visits or is local to Delray Beach wants to come to The Original Popcorn House and experience what we offer,” said Jerri. “The best reward is seeing people smile, tell us how amazing a flavor is or what a magical place it is,” said Jerri.

Come sample one or many of their unique popcorn flavors or sweet treats and you’ll be coming back for more! JASON BLINDER Dedication Ceremony At FAU

By Diane feen

Jason Blinder touched many lives. As someone who believed in truth and justice he was an advocate for all things in their proper place. He was also the voice (and mentor) for causes that needed his perceptiveness and brilliance.

The Blinder Family - Ari, Todd, Helene, Ethan, Stephanie and grandmother Phyllis Brenner Standing in front of bench that was dedicated in Jason’s honor

Jason’s life was short – he passed away at 29 – but he left a legacy of kindness, leadership, scholarship and integrity that went far beyond his chronological age. It is for that reason the students of FAU wanted to memorialize him with a bench (and poignant) plaque outside the FAU Student Government House Chambers. The Blinder family added to this auspicious honorarium a gavel, justice robes and a scholarship for a student facing adversity who overcame the odds. It was Jason who had the most adversity to overcome (he had Crohn’s Disease) yet he did not want his disease - or his medical struggles - to define him. He took pre-med classes at FAU and became the Supreme Court Justice of the Student Court during 84 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

trying times at the university. He was also a role model for others who knew him. “Jason was knowledgeable beyond his age, not only with concepts but wisdom. He made everyone feel important,” said Chris Mack. To Jarrett Stark he was a friend to cherish eternally. “Everyone should be blessed to have a friend like Jason. He was a wonderful role model and I often ask myself, ‘what would Jason do.’ He touched all our lives.” The dedication was a poignant moment in time when students, alumni, faculty, FAU administrators and the Blinder family and friends could leave something concrete behind to hold a space in the hearts and minds of those who knew Jason. And for those who didn’t know him, it will be a

constant reminder of his pure essence and optimism. Engraved on the bench were Jason’s words: “Regardless of what we decide to do, or how it ends, it’s been a genuine honor for me to sit on the same bench with all of you.” Jason’s mother Helene Blinder has this to say. “The Dedication gave me an opportunity to see firsthand the positive effects Jason had on the FAU community he loved and respected so much. The positive direction he brought to the student government as Chief Justice, and the positive results flowing from that direction, are now permanently memorialized as part of the FAU community. Jason’s memory has been immortalized. I am, my family is, eternally grateful.”

STITCHES BY THE SEA Needlepoint And Knitting Nirvana By Diane feen

There aren’t too many people who don’t gravitate toward Judi Alweil. She’s a creative mentor for many, and a reminder of what is possible if you want to turn a piece of piece of canvas into a colorful wall hanging, handbag, belt, rug or pillow.

Judi is not famous by traditional standards, but if you are hooked into the art of needlepoint or knitting she is the Queen Mother. But you would never know it. She is the last person to toot her own horn or brag about her creative prowess, but behind many a great project is Alweil. That’s because she has spent the last 40 plus years honing her craft. Judi first opened a shop in Long Island, where she was a designer, distributor and manufacturer of needlepoint and yarn products. It was also a safe port in the storm for creative types who longed for the challenge of knitting sweaters, shawls or bags or making colorful masterpieces in needlepoint. When Judi and her husband Dick moved down to South Florida they recreated this artful space on Atlantic Avenue, calling it Stitches by the Sea. True to its namesake it is near the sea and has a sunny disposition that would disarm a hungry grizzly bear.

Desi, Judi, and Dick at work 86 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

It’s also a place where you can pick up a designer canvas - that with some artful stitchery – can be transformed into a bird paradise or a Renaissance masterpiece. While some people come to buy the tools of their trade, others bring their work- inprogress to show creative consultants Susan and Pamela. To describe Stitches by the Sea would be like describing a family picnic with colorful fruits and flowers. It’s a real life version of “Steel Magnolias” sans the movie stars. But like all small screen productions this one makes stars out of its employees

and customers. Take Joan Grant for example. The grandmother of five recently picked up a Missoni-style rug she made for her daughter’s foyer. The chevron pattern in tonal shades of light green, purple, orange, turquoise and mauve was made in wool yarn by a technique known as Bargello. Though Joan seemed quite pleased with her efforts, she was nonplussed by the fact that her handiwork was a true work of art – a stitched homage to the great masters like Picasso. “It took me seven months to make this rug. I did it while I was on a cruise and when

I was at home watching TV. Needlepoint is like therapy for me,” said Joan, who credited Judi for some of her success. It was Judi who figured out how to take eight canvases and stitch them together and it was Judi who set the Bargello course. “I showed Joan how to start the project and told her the measurements. I remember sitting on the floor of my house cutting canvas and measuring it.” Judi must be a good teacher because her dedicated friends (and customer’s) have been coming to her for years. They come wanting to make belts, handbags, sweaters, wall tapestry, three-dimensional quirky characters and whatever else you can imagine. Joan made a needlepoint belt for her son and a needlepoint pillow for her grandson to replicate the mascot at Georgetown University. But Judi never takes bragging rights. She is the ombudsman of good taste – the arbiter of classy creative endeavors. That’s why many of her customer’s have followed her from Long Island. Take Carole Piccininni for example. The needlepoint master, who sits at a needlepoint stand most of the time, learned her craft from Judi on

Long Island. Now she can be found most days helping customers with their needlepoint canvases that seem more like precious art than a creative outlet. “The beauty of needlepoint is that people really like doing it and it’s very relaxing. You don’t have to talk and it keeps your hands busy so you don’t eat,” said Carole. If you want to learn to knit there’s Ruth. The former owner of Art, Needle ‘N Canvas is a dyed in the wool crafts maven. Even after two hip replacements she was back at Stitches by the Sea for comfort, camaraderie and knitting. “The people who work here (and the customer’s) make this a great place. I had one customer who told me if she lived in Delray she would come here every day.” There are a lot of people who feel that way. There’s always a buzz of activity, new products (like the linen and cotton sequin yarn with matching ribbon) and a host of creative types to spice up the room. To Kathryn Andrews Stitches by the Sea is nirvana. “I have been knitting and doing needlepoint for many years and this is like a candy store. I want to touch everything. It’s not just a feast for your eyes; you have to be here to

Large selection of canvas and color to pick from

see the stitch patterns and intricate work,” said Andrews reverently. There are a lot of passionate knitters and needlepoint fans who come to Stitches by the Sea to get canvases and yarn to adorn the walls and torsos of their loved ones. They also come for needlepoint canvas Trunk Shows as well as to bond with other creative souls who have taken the best of life and imposed it on canvas or yarn. The Surfing History Project By linda brown

{

Whether you love surfing or just enjoy local history, you won’t want to miss “The Surfing History Project” which recently found a permanent home in Delray Beach at 255 NE Sixth Avenue (US 1).

The Surfing Museum is the latest cultural offering in Delray, a city that is rapidly becoming a cultural highlight in South Florida. What makes the Surfing History Project extra special is the fact that local surfing legends have embraced the effort, hanging out at the museum to greet visitors and share their stories. Their presence brings history to life and allows for visitors to learn just how ingrained surf culture is in Palm Beach County and in Delray Beach. On a recent visit, we were fortunate to meet Tom Warnke, just crowned East Coast Champion in his age group, as our tour guide. Tom has had a lifelong passion for surfing and is an eloquent spokesman for the sport’s rich history in Florida. As we admired beautiful boards from the 50s, 60s and 70s, we got a primer in local surfing history. At one time, the freedom to surf was a hot issue in Delray Beach and Palm Beach County, with lawsuits, landmark legal rulings and ardent debates at City Hall. The exhibit includes old newspaper clippings focusing on the debate in Delray Beach, where the city’s fathers tried in vain to keep a lid on the sport with surfers and some of their mom’s weighing in with the need to let the kids ride. Ultimately, the surfers prevailed, but the debate provides a quaint view into a bygone era. Surfing has a long and storied history in Florida with the state producing champions who went on to worldwide acclaim. In addition to producing champions, it was big business. Before it became a restaurant haven, At90 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

lantic Avenue was the biggest seller of surf boards in the state and the industry created lots of jobs. Several boards produced in Delray, including the legendary “Richie,” are on exhibit. They are beautiful works of art. One surfing pioneer, Ron Heavyside, made his first board in shop class at the old Seacrest High School. He went on to found Nomad Surf Shops which is still in business and a favorite of serious surfers the world over. The Surfing History Project is modeling itself on a California museum which draws huge crowds. Before settling on its new Delray Beach location, backers were looking at locations in West Palm Beach. The Surfing History Project plans to document, preserve and display a complete history of surfing in the state of Florida, with an emphasis on Palm Beach County. The museum has been set up as a nonprofit and is seeking grants and donations. It is being run by a nine member volunteer board consisting of many local surfing

legends including: Warnke, Fred Salmon, Corky Roche, Bill Keeton, Scott McCranels, Doug Bogue, Justin Beard, Shawn Murray and David Mowry. In addition to a collection of vintage boards, the museum includes thousands of photographs that have been digitized for posterity. The Surfing History Project is seeking old photos, slides, videos or movies and will digitize them for donors in exchange for the ability to use a second copy for the museum. Donors of objects will be given attribution in the exhibits. In addition to chronicling the golden era of surfing in Florida, the project is also interested in recent history archiving many photos including the incredible waves caused by Superstorm Sandy in 2013. Memberships are available and range in price from $35 for individuals and $75 for families to $5,000 for the Founders Club. For more information, visit www.surfhistoryproject.org

BRIAN LYNOTT One Of The Good Guys By Diane Feen

{

Photo by melissa korman

Let’s face it working in a bank does not seem glorious or glamorous. Neither does working as a sales clerk in the hardware department at Sears.

But each has led to a fulfilling life for local resident Brian Lynott. If you haven’t heard of Lynott, it’s because his good deeds are not plastered in magazines or press releases, but are simply under the radar. His passion and commitment to helping others is as high profile as a Kardashian, but only to those familiar with his work. That work encompasses being a Regional Executive with AmTrust Bank, A Division of New York Community Bank as well as a volunteer and financial supporter for organizations that help those in need. “As I got older I realized how fortunate I was and I wanted to give back to the community. The more involved I have become, the more passionate I am about sharing my resources and time with people who need it,” said the Scranton, Pennsylvania native. And that’s exactly what he does. Lynott volunteers his time (and resources) with “The Campaign for Grade Level Reading” in Delray Beach Schools and is on the advisory board (and a volunteer) at Community Partners. For two years he was also a mentor at The Boys & Girls Club in Delray Beach helping with homework, playing sports and being a good role model. Working with these children opened Lynott’s eyes to the needs of those in the community as well as the benefits of selfless giving. “I was humbled and impressed with how good these children were. They want a better life and are so protective of each other. It was rewarding to show them that hard work and dedication can lead to success.” And no one knows better than Lynott. While attending the University of Scranton (where he got a degree in Human Resources) Brian found work in the hardware department at Sears. When a customer (who worked in human resources at a Bank) suggested he consider a career in banking he jumped at the opportunity. “I started out as a bank teller and

April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

was promoted to branch manager at Mellon Bank in Pennsylvania. While I was on vacation in West Palm Beach I saw an ad in the newspaper for a job at a bank. I ended up taking the job and moving to Palm Beach County in the early 90’s. I have seen the city of Delray totally transform.” Transform is a pivotal entity in the life of Brian Lynott. He has not only experienced many transformations in his own life but inspires them in others. “Brian really gets the importance of mentoring and supporting children. He helped get us grants to purchase books for “Campaign for Grade Level Reading,” which is a program that helps children keep up their reading skills in the summer when they traditionally go down,” said Janet Meeks, the Education Coordinator for the City of Delray Beach. For the past three years Lynott has gotten grant money from New York Community Bank (NYCB) to buy backpacks filled with books and a journal. According to Lynott if children are not reading when they are in third grade it’s hard for them to ever catch up. That’s why he is so adamant that this program be funded. “When I get involved in an organization I want to make a difference. I have children of my own and I realize the importance of reading. It gives them better social skills and a competitive edge.” Since Lynott knows that good deeds foster intrinsic well being, he is a cheerleader for getting his team on board as well. Many AmTrust employees (and branch managers) help mentor children. That makes this patriarch of 15 AmTrust branches pretty pleased. “I like our branch managers to volunteer their time with organizations that help lower and moderate income families. It’s important to give back.” One person familiar with Lynott’s tremendous desire to give back is Laura Morse, VP of Development and Communications for Community Partners. She knows that Lynott’s head and heart are in sync with

the needs of the most vulnerable. “One year I called up Brian a few days before Christmas and give him our wish list for the holidays. In just three days he drove up with an SUV filled with gifts and food for our families. He got other branches of the bank involved as well. It’s not just about giving money; it’s about showing up for beautification days, volunteer events and work days. Brian and his team have really been there for us.” It seems that Lynott has been there for a lot of organizations. Although he doesn’t mention them in his bio (or interview) others around him are quick to add that Lynott’s giving nature is spread in all directions. “We partner with an organization called Community Caring Center that gives

healthy food to people in need in Boynton Beach. We funded a grant for them to develop a culinary incubator program to give potential entrepreneurs the opportunity to start their own business in the food services industry,” said Lynott. “They also have a restaurant called Secret Garden on Boynton Beach Blvd. where they showcase food prepared (and locally grown) by incubator program members.” Just because Lynott is a do-gooder doesn’t mean he isn’t a superb bank executive. The Delray Beach AmTrust branch has the largest client base in Florida. “New York Community Bank has over 270 locations in five states (NY, NJ, OH, AZ and FL), and our Delray Branch is in the top percentile among all AmTrust branches. Because of

that loyal base we enjoy investing in Delray because of the success we’ve had here.” There are a few other things Lynott is proud of – his two girls, 13-year-old Grace and 10-year-old Sarah and his wife Dee. There are other things that get Lynott psyched up at 4 am every morning. “I bike or run along A1A every morning. I have been in nine Ironman competitions that include 140.6 miles of swimming, biking and running and I encourage my employees to join me at the gym or in marathons.” If all of this makes you want to take a nap, don’t tell Lynott. “My kids are involved in sports and competitive dance and my wife did a half marathon. A healthy body is a healthy mind.” And who’s to argue that fact? www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | April 2015

OFF THE AVE FOOD & SPIRITS A Great Place To Hang Out And Eat Until Your Hearts Content

hand toasted thin crust personal pizza (large available too)

By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

{

They are a lot of new and exciting things happening at Off the Ave, the local ‘feel good’ bar and restaurant in downtown Delray. What makes it so special to neighborhood folks (and tourists) is the fact that it is off the Avenue.

That means you can wind down, enjoy the calm and walk a few yards from big city life. For those who have a wandering eye (or like the glow of the sun or moon), you can now sit outside at one of their new outdoor patio tables. The outdoor patio has five tables and seats 20 people so that you can have a beer (or drink) munch on some jumbo chicken wings and watch the scene as it unfolds. If you want a beefier fare there are some new items on the menu. For burger lovers they have a wonderful new Half Pound BBQ Bacon Burger made with Angus beef. This tasty burger comes topped with beer battered onion rings, BBQ sauce, Cheddar cheese, crispy bacon and sweet baby rays. Served piping hot this burger is excellent with a moistness and sweetness not normally associated with burgers. The flavors over112 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

lap and enhance each other and the quality of beef is first rate. The Oklahoma Brisket Burger is also a popular dish. Made of brisket, chuck and short ribs, it has cheddar cheese, homemade caper mayo and topped with an egg. John of Delray Beach cannot say enough good things about this tasty choice. “OMG, I have a new all-time favorite burger at Off the Ave. It outdoes every burger I’ve ever tried. The meat blend alone could stand on its own for uniqueness, but the caper mayo, sautéed red onions, cheddar cheese, and egg on a toasted English muffin makes it amazing. The marriage of flavors and gives credence to the expression ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’” There are a lot of Off the Ave fans. Some come for the pizza, which is now served in a 10-inch personal pie size (instead of slices) and others swoon for the new Pulled Pork Tacos. “I just tried Off the Ave’s Pulled Pork Tacos and loved them. They’re tender, juicy and well spiced with cilantro and avocado (that give them a nice creamy texture). Served on a tortilla they were perfect,” said Steve Myers. There’s also a South of the border flair at Off the Ave with their Chicken and Steak Quesadillas. The Quesadillas come with fresh cilantro, cheddar jack cheese mixture, seasoning and chipotle ranch dressing with sour cream. Try their new sweet potato waffle fries or scrumptious oversized beer battered onion rings on the side. If you’re a vegetarian, or want to keep it light, try one of their salads. Recently added to the menu is a Caprese Salad. Served with a large portion of buffalo mozzarella, fresh sliced tomatoes and fresh basil the Caprese

Salad is drizzled with balsamic glaze dressing, imported olive oil and kosher salt and pepper. Another exciting new entrée to grace the menu is Beer Battered Alaskan Cod served with steak fries. Fish lovers unite – this is terrific news. It’s hard to mention Off the Ave without talking about their Philly Cheese Steaks. Served with shaved rib-eye steak, mushrooms, onion, bell pepper, provolone, mayo (or mustard) it rests inside a freshly baked roasted bun. For chicken lovers they have chicken Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches. If you would rather have your sandwich on a grilled whole wheat wrap it’s yours for the asking. Another heavy hitter at this neighborhood haunt is their homemade meatballs. Tender and flavorful they’re just like mamma used to make (or you wish she had). You can get a fresh meatball sandwich with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese in a pan roasted bun or have it as an appetizer. Off the Ave is also well known for their pizzas. The pies are made with a tangy homemade sauce and the crust is thin and crispy perfect for pizza lovers. There’s a margherita pizza, veggie, pepperoni, pineapple and ham

(assorted meats) and your choice of toppings. If you’re hungry, but dining solo, try their new personal size pizza that will fulfill your craving for this Italian delight. It’s an Off the Ave tradition to offer 14 rotating ice cold draft beers on tap as well as bottled beer, wine and spirits. It’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement of this hot spot with a dartboard in back, eight flat screen TV’s for sporting events and a joie de vie that is contagious. Happy Hour is Monday to Friday from 3pm to 7pm. There are discounted beers, appetizers and drinks with no pretense, just a good time. “We came together to bring downtown Delray a great place to get together with friends, to hang out and enjoy the local environment with a fine cocktail and some great food at reasonable prices,” said co-owner Adam Knoblock. One thing you have to try at Off the Ave is their giant cast iron heated chocolate chip cookie with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. You won’t regret it – it is divine. The cookie is thick, chocolate-infused and dripping hot with chocolate sauce. Need I say more? Christopher H says it best. “Off the Ave has the best sandwiches in town, hands down. If you go more than once they welcome you by name, and you can play darts as well. We love it.” Off the Ave 19 SE 5th Ave., Delray Beach, FL 561- 450-6768 offtheavedelray.com Off the Ave is open every day

ask the How Safe Are The Foods and Drugs We Give Our Pets?

W

e have been seeing plenty of frightening warnings about food safety, drug withdrawals and vaccine scares since the New Year began and we have had many questions asking “what do I believe and do?” We want to believe the foods we buy for our pets are safe and healthy and that our veterinarians are only providing what our pets essentially need and that these products are safe. However, in this time of instant access on the internet, we are quickly discovering that it may not be as safe as we think. Let’s focus on commercial pet foods. All the slick advertising promotes these great, natural foods along with the energetic dog or cat on the label, however upon opening the bag, we don’t see those same foods. As a result of our pets repeatedly consuming these products, many pets become lethargic, overweight and sick with constant visits to the veterinarian. Does this make sense to you? Why is one major brand of dog food engaged in a class action lawsuit concerning pets passing away within hours of eating this food and yet there have been no recalls? We have an active case of a client’s pet going totally blind in one eye with the other one also on its way as a result of being fed this type of food after only after a few days. After chang-

ing the pet’s diet to an all natural and real food diet, the remaining eye with partial vision is already improving. Why is another major brand in a class action lawsuit for mislabeling their ingredients? Who is watching the henhouse? Let’s also look at vaccinations. Fifty years ago puppies were only vaccinated for approximately four diseases and cats did not require any. Today our dogs are vaccinated every six months for all kinds of prevention, however, the submissions to the FDA conclude that most vaccines are only about 5% effective. If your pet has only a 1 or 2% chance of getting the disease naturally, is there a real benefit? We also must consider the warning insert you never see that lists all the possible side effects including allergy, scratching and itching, joint problems, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, blindness and death. Is it worth the risk and ask yourself, why didn’t my veterinarian advise me of these health risks before recommending and administering them. Aren’t veterinarians legally obligated to do so under informed consent? Look at the prescribed drugs. Were you aware that most of these drugs are NOT approved for animal use and that there really are no set dosages? Did your veterinarian even give you the drug warning insert? That insert

is legally to be given to the client and to be explained if there are questions? Finally, take a quick look at antibiotics. They are routinely prescribed as a preventive to infection when in fact that method is NOT an approved use and when used this way can cause more harm than good. We are told that home prepared meals are not balanced, that raw foods are unhealthy, that natural herbs and botanicals are unsafe yet the modern processed food and drug industry has only been around for a hundred years or so. Our pets and families survived from the beginning of our time before all drugs and pet foods. We need to look at what is natural in nature, not live under the fear that every being will die without vaccines, drugs and “special diets.” Do you trust the drug and food companies or the medical community more than you trust yourself? We all instinctively know the answers or where to look. Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM co-own Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach and co-host PetHealthCafe.com radio show. Our 40 years in the animal field has provided us unparallel vision and information which we pass to our clients daily. We can be reached at www.PetHealthCafe.com or 800-940-7387 or at Fiesta Pet Deli.

A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... “Happy Trails To You, Until We Meet Again!” They say all good things must come to an end. As we near the five year anniversary of this column, it is now time to retire my plume and ride off into the sunset. My decision to end my column was not an easy one. As evidenced by the substantial amount of hilarious and painfully true material, there is plenty to write about each month. But with my extremely busy schedule and my desire to pursue my other passions, I am finding it harder and harder to make the time to create witty and sometimes very personal accounts of the shenanigans of being single in South Florida. It has been a great run for nearly half a decade. There have surely been some unforgettable tales. Many of my monthly columns have been controversial and I am often challenged about their authenticity. I am continually asked “Is this real or did you make it up?” As I have said time and time again, many of these accounts are so far over the top and insane, I couldn’t make them up if I tried. I have first hand witnessed the dating plight of my peers and have personally survived many of these dating nightmares myself. Case on point- the single world can be a total “sh$% show.” Since this is my very last column, it’s only fitting to establish a Hall of Fame to recognize the dating debacles that are the true stand outs. As always, I will maintain anonymity to protect those who were brave enough to share their anecdotes. Be assured that witness protection will remain in effect always, even long after this column fades to dust. These brave souls know who they are. You my friends, are about to be inducted into a very illustrious group. Like the Marines Corps; you are the proud, the few. Without further adieu... Your Top Five… #5- December 2012, “The Baby Talker- self explanatory! #4- April 2011, “Maid for Hire”- he wanted a maid not a girlfriend. #3- January 2012, “Swinging and Special 128 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

K”- He wanted to swing and horse tranquilize. #2 – January 2011 “Leg Shaving Fiasco”hairy legs are a deal breaker. And the #1 goes to... August 2014 “Bedroom Urinator”- get the pitcher? A heartfelt thank you to everyone else for their very colorful narratives over the last five years. Without you or your bravery, there would be no humor and definitely a blank page here each month. Although I am not ending my chronicles with a big fat engagement ring from my Prince Charming, I bid my readers farewell feeling accomplished and full of pride from this fabulous journalistic opportunity. I have personally experienced the ups and downs and the highs/lows of being a single girl. I have also been fortunate to share many a chuckle with my dear friends who have supplied me with the most amazingly horrific and hilarious accounts along the way. Much gratitude to my parents, who continue to serve as the President and V.P. of my fan club. They have been the greatest supporters of not only my writing (sharing my articles with everyone they know), but of everything I do. A thank you to Atlantic Ave Magazine, for allowing me a platform to scribe these shameless dating experiences. For five years, I got to say what others were afraid to!

Much appreciation to my readers; my friends who wait each month in anticipation of the next hilarious chapter and the strangers who seem to always stop me on the Avenue or out and about town, stating how much they look forward to reading each month. In closing, please remember that it is ok to be single and fabulous. Never settle because you have “FOMO” (Fear of Missing Out). Would you rather fly solo and live your life as your own pilot or be stuck in an unhappy relationship because that is what is society expects or what you think you really need? I have tried to live my life and write this column setting an example for all the men and women out there looking for love. Be the love of your own life, your own soul mate. When you love yourself and your life, love truly finds a way of sneaking in. This is not good bye, just so long for now. Life’s a journey, enjoy the ride… Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Nicole is an avid tennis player; enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is also single and ready to find “Mr. Right!”

ARTS ║ THE Pineapple People

Pineapple Grove has come into its own as a destination within Delray Beach. But it didn’t happen overnight. Many people from all walks of life have worked hard to make Pineapple Grove what it is today, a laid back arts district where you tend to find locals shopping and dining. They all have one thing in common….they are all characters. Over the next 12 months we’ll meet some of the Pioneers, the Godfathers and the Sons of Anarchy who made it happen. By Stephen Chrisanthus

In the northeast corner of pineapple grove lays one of Delray Beach’s cultural gems, Artists Alley. This colony of talented artists has become the creative heart of a town recognized for its galleries and artistically gifted residents. Ian Levinson of Cloud House Pottery, Amanda Johnson of Amanda Johnson Studio and Robert Schmidt of Schmidt Stained Glass are three of the talents that make this community what it is. From pottery and portraiture to stained glass and costume design, the repertoire and quality of work available to view and purchase is sure to peak your interest. All of the studios and galleries are open every first Friday from 6-9pm, every third Thursday from 6-9pm, and Saturdays from 125pm. Make this alley one of your Grove favorites, as these creators continue to nurture Delray’s arts. For more info go to artistsalleydelray.com

Photo by Norman Karl Garrett Photography

Robert Schmidt

I chose to locate my studio and teaching facility in Pineapple Grove because of all the passionate artists there. I think the Artist Alley district can become a global destination for artists making Delray Beach not only a wonderful place to visit but a great place to find one of a kind works of art.

Amanda Johnson

I love creating art works in my Pineapple Grove studio/ showroom. I consider myself very fortunate to be connected to so many diverse talents. Whether it be the talents of other visual artists, music arts and or culinary arts, I can always find inspiration just a few steps away. Pineapple Grove is quickly becoming the art’s heartbeat of Delray Beach.

Pineapple grove and Artists Alley are such amazing places to have my business. It’s close enough to everything, without being right in the middle of it all. Every day I feel so blessed and inspired by all the other artists around me. Looking forward I can’t wait to see all the incredible things the city has planned.

They rescue us…

{

My wife and I love animals. We have birds, have cared for cats and have a soft spot for Hopkins, our son’s bearded dragon.

But we have a special affinity for dogs, especially rescue dogs. We are firm believers in the saying that first we rescue them, but they end up rescuing us. A number of years ago we adopted Casey, a gorgeous golden retriever from Everglades Golden Retriever Rescue (www.egrr. org) a magnificent organization that does great work. A little while later, we came home from the Delray Affair with Randy, a Chihuahua mix that we adopted from a booth run by the Animal Rescue Force (www.animalrescueforce.org). Randy has become a Facebook sensation and has given us more joy than we can ever express.

134 April 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

When Casey passed, we went back to ARF and rescued Sophie, another Chihuahua mix who was found roaming the streets of Miami. She was a tough little girl, but was very loyal and loving to us. We lost Sophie when she was attacked by an unleashed dog around the block from our home. It was a traumatic experience, but we were grateful for the time we had with her. So Randy was a lonely guy until a few months ago when we made the acquaintance of Golden Retrievals, a Boca based

non-profit that rescues Goldens, which has always been a favorite breed of mine. Thanks to our friend Kelli Freeman we got connected to Golden Retrievals and its wonderful founder, Linda Ripps. When she brought us “Teddy” we fell in love instantly and so we added him to our hectic, but enjoyable lives. Randy has adjusted and still gets his share of car rides, walks and social media time. Teddy seems really happy and we absolutely adore him. He’s a wonderful personality and a beautiful, beautiful golden with the typical great retriever personality. All of this is a long-winded way of saying that if you can and you’re thinking about it, take the plunge and rescue a dog or a cat. Birds are very cool too. At the very least, support a local rescue. Dezzy’s Second Chance (seen at the Delray Green Market during season) is another terrific group. They do the work of angels. But they need our help.
