The Rise of the Faroese Tourism Industry This edition of Atlantic Review will focus on the Faroe Islands as a tourist destination. The Faroe Islands are full of beautiful natural scenery and there are many exciting places to visit around the islands that provide tourists with unforgettable adventures. Many foreign media outlets have started to recognise this fact and an ever increasing number of them are encouraging their readers and viewers to visit the Faroe Islands to see the unique nature and culture that thrives here.

As one article in the magazine shows, foreign visitors have always been captivated by the Faroe Islands. Back in 1897, British explorer William Collingwood concluded that arriving in the Faroe Islands was like sailing into paradise. He nicknamed the islands the Fairy Islands.

Similar praise can be read today in such media as National Geographic Traveler, CBS and The New York Times.

There is absolutely no doubt that the full solar eclipse on March 20th has fuelled international interest in the Faroe Is8 / ATLANTIC REVIEW 1/2015

lands but there is every indication that this interest is likely to continue even after this event, and that Faroese tourism will continue to grow. The employees at Atlantic Airways are eager and thrilled to transport visitors on our airplanes from the world to the Faroe Islands in the coming years.

The Faroe Islands achieved an associate membership in UNESCO, which decides which ancient sites and objects to place on the UN’s World Heritage list. A Faroese UNESCO committee is currently working on preparing suggestions for which places in the Faroe Islands to put on the list. The 700 year old Magnus cathedral in Kirkjubøur is mentioned as well as the 1000 year old Koltur infield.

Many other places are mentioned in this connection and they can all be experienced by visiting the islands even though they are not yet on the World Heritage list. There will also be many events in the Faroe Islands in 2015, and this magazine contains the most comprehensive calendar of images and text

ever made about events in the Faroe Islands in a year.

Should you only experience a third of all the many events on schedule then you will have achieved a proper understanding of the cultural diversity and wealth of the Faroe Islands. They are traditional and globalised at the same time. They present many extraordinary experiences to young and old. The Faroes Islands simply inspire a creative desire and fun.

Beautiful landscapes, buildings, people, animals, all lovely things in a so little, intimate place. The Faroe Islands are the perfect place where to stay alone, feel in peace and get in spiritual contact with nature. When I’m in Mykines I love walking towards the lighthouse just before the sunset. The silence broken only by the wing flapping and the crying of birds, the puffins emerging from the ground, the sheep getting together, the noise of the waves breaking on the coast and the warm colours of the sky are a mystical experience.

Discovering a Forgotten Treasure I’m completely in love with the Faroe Islands. It’s such a dramatic place that you just can’t believe was naturally made. Seems like those mountains, valleys and little towns were made on purpose. I’ve been surfing in many of the best known places in the world and felt kind of disappointed. The Faroe Islands remain mysterious and forgotten as a treasure still to be discovered. I come from the Canary Islands, where it’s warm all year. For me an exotic place doesn’t have palm trees and clear waters, but steep and snowy mountains. The first time I visited the Faroe Islands I realised that they were the most beautiful place I’d been to. The Faroese have kept the ancestral culture, language and traditions intact. There’s something magic there, a mix of isolation, roughness, dramatic sceneries and strong traditions, that just makes you want to come back for more

Creating an Oceanic Symphony When I composed the symphony ”Oceanic Days,” I used the sea around the Faroe Islands as an inspiration. Ever since I was a boy, I have listened to the sounds in the Faroese nature and I have been particularly interested in the sea. In the Faroe Islands there is a constant meeting of sea and basalt, and the mountains and ravines make excellent acoustic rooms that produce a wealth of sounds. When the sea bashes against the basalt it creates a deep base tone that is the foundation under an immensely multifaceted clang. Combined with this colourful wall sound, the main inspiration for ”Oceanic Days” was waves breaking against the beach cliff side. The wave breaks when the distance between the sea bed and surface diminishes. That is how I have tried to write the music. It rises and sets again. The sea is audible in nearly all places in the Faroe Islands and when the symphony was performed, the music could be heard both from the front and the rear. The listeners were surrounded by music, just as we are surrounded by the sea.

Exploring the Unknown The Faroese landscape has not been an inspiration on my work as an artist as such. Rather, nature as a whole and human nature in particular have been inspirational to me. Other artists and good music have also been inspirational. I have studied in Iceland and Finland, and the nature in these places has inspired some of my work just as much as Faroese nature has. Rather than emphasising landscape I imagine what we see. We have learned that the universe is infinite, but we can’t see this with our bare eyes. That is why each of us has to imagine what this infinity looks like. The sea is visible on the surface, but we can only imagine the depth and these feelings and imaginations are individual. But they can be illustrated universally in art, and this is what I am trying to do.

The colours in the tubes are produced using natural materials. Some of them are so strong that they almost glow in the dark. They shine from within.

Impressions and Reminiscences Maria á Reinsaríinum sweeps through my memory with kindness. I can still smell the cleaning solvent, hear the hum of the dry cleaners, and see Maria in front of endless racks of clothes behind the old wooden counter. She managed what few would dream of, make a little boy want to go to the dry cleaners with his mother. She was goodness embodied, salt of the town I grew up in, Tórshavn. She spent her whole working life running Reinsaríið (the Dry Cleaners).

After a long working life, Maria closed up shop in 2000.

And if it was not for some bright heads at the city council, this beautiful building near the harbour would have been forgotten as so many of the sweet places of my childhood.

In 2013 the city in close cooperation with local musicians started an ambitious renovation project. The result: a beautiful dance between sashed windows and brushed steel, between old wooden crossbeams and glass. Part of the second floor is carved out to give more space to the music, creating a room that is both airy and cosy. And the sound technicians have wrought their magic, made the old building sing, turned it into an audiophile’s dream.

Reinsaríið is alive again and houses many activities, e.g. exhibitions, courses, lectures and meetings. But I come for the music. A week does not pass without several of the best musicians in the Faroes plying their trade at Reinsaríið. You will find everything here, from old folk ballads to heavy metal growl, swinging pop to pumping techno. Not all of it is to my taste but much is. And Reinsaríið has again become a place of rich impressions that age into good memories.

Added to the kind voice of Maria of my childhood is the minimalistic and beautiful melancholy of the group AVE, the tight rhythm of Hogni calling me to a revolution, the funked waltz of T.O.S., the deep base of the folk singer Hanus G. Johannesen, and jazzy improvisations on the chaotic Atlantic during Tórshavn’s Winter Jazz Festival.

I am happy, life has returned to the old building, and may old Maria í Reinsaríinum’s kindness continue to drench the building for many years to come. The annual Parliament opening is on St. Olaf’s Day. It is customary for priests and politicians to march in procession from the Tórshavn cathedral. There are a host of cultural and sporting events during St. Olaf’s Wake, and there are sales booths, restaurants, exhibitions, gatherings and fun fairs during the holiday. The traditional midnight sing-a-long in Tórshavn city centre, Vaglið attracts some 12-15000 people.

august 6 - 8 August The Summarfestival, Klaksvík The biggest music festival in the Faroe Islands takes place in Klaksvík and it usually draws crowds of 8000 to 10000 people. Among the past performers are Scorpions, Robin Gibb, Westlife, Brian McFadden and Shakin Stevens. Klaksvík is surrounded by tall mountains and the atmosphere is particularly charming in the dusk. It is a special experience to hear the crowds sing along to some of the well-known Faroese songs.

According to an old Faroese legend four brothers lived in the village of Sumba at the most southern point of the Faroe Islands. The were all brave and strong, but they were constantly quarrelling and fighting and sometimes even threathing to take each other’s lives. One day they were out in the mountains tending their sheep when darkness suddenly fell upon them.

They were terrified and promised the Lord that if they survived this experience they would change and become better men. Soon after the sun came

out again and legend says that they hugged and never fought nor quarreled again for the rest of their lives.

This legend is believed to be a recollection of a total solar eclipse recorded in the Faroe Islands on 30 May 1612 at 11.25 am. On 20 March 2015 a total solar eclipse will once again cover the Faroe Islands in darkness at 9.41 am.

Faroese national museum manager Erland Viberg Joensen stated in his presentation that the 700 year old Magnus Cathedral in Kirkjubøur, which is among the rarest monuments in the North Atlantic is a worthy candidate. Tinganes in Tórshavn is also an important part of North Atlantic cultural heritage, because according to the old Faroese saga the site was Thingstead as early as the Viking Age. Søgan um Atlantic Airways Atlantic Airways fleyg sín fyrsta túr millum Føroyar og Danmark 28. mars í 1988. Felagið varð formliga sett á stovn 10. november í 1987 við tveimum eigarum, Føroya Landsstýri og Cimber Air. Tað var ikki nøkur løtt uppgáva at loysa Atlantic Airways úr lagdi.

Cimber Air var tá farið úr felag­num, og landsstýrið mátti tí einsamalt taka um endan. Loysnin var, at landsstýrið teknaði 75 milliónir krónur í nýggjum parta­peningi, og við tí eydnaðist at geva føroyska flog­­­ felagnum nýtt lív.

Tey ringastu kreppuárini eydnaðist ikki at fáa Atlantic Airways at geva avlop, men gongdin vendi. Í 1995 hevði felagið á fyrsta sinni avlop á rakstri­num. Hetta árið varð virksemið spakuliga víðkað til eisini at umfata flúgving til Íslands. Atlantic Airways átók sær at standa fyri hesi flúgving í sam­starvi við Air Iceland. Árini eftir gekk skjótt hjá Atlantic Airways. Felagið fór at flúgva millum Ísland og Grønland og fleiri leigutúrar úr Keyp­­manna­havn til Bosnia. Og í 1998 gjørdi Atlantic Airways av at leiga eitt flogfar aftrat. Við tveimum flogførum bar til at víðka flúgv­­ingina uppaftur meira.

Fyrst varð túra­­talið millum Føroyar og Danmark økt. Í 1998 fór felagið at flúgva til Skotlands og í 1999 eisini til Noregs. Víðkaða flúgvingin fekk stóra undirtøku millum manna, og felagið fekk tí tørv á eini varandi loysn fyri flogfør.

Farið varð til samráðingar um keyp av nýggj­um flogfari í oktober 1999. Sáttmáli varð undir­ skrivaður í november, og 2. februar í 2000 stóð næsta flogfarið av slagnum British Aerospace 146-200 í Vágum.

Síðan hevur Atlantic Airways víðkað nógv um talið á flogførum og fráferðum. Í dag eru fýra flogfør og tvær tyrlur í flotanum. Í januar 2008 undirskrivaði felagið sáttmála við Airbus um at keypa nýtt flogfar av slag­num A 319. Flogfarið varð sett í flúgving 28. mars í 2012, og stutt eftir varð farið at flúgva beinleiðis til Barcelona. Í september 2012 vann felagið Airline of the Year-heiðursløn á aðal­fundinum hjá European Regions Airline Association í Dublin í Írlandi. Dómsnevndin segði, at avrikini at taka í nýtslu heilt nýggja navigatións­tøkni á Airbus-flogfarinum og prógva sítt stóra virði fyri Føroyar eru einastandandi.

Føroya landsstýri einskildi í 2007 ein triðing av Atlantic Airways, og felagið varð tá skrásett á virðisbrævamarknaði. Í 2014 samtykti løgtingið eftir uppskoti frá landsstýrinum at keypa einskilda triðingin aftur frá privatu partaeigarunum, og landsstýrið eigur nú aftur alt felagið.

TRANSPORT A well developed transport network makes it easy to travel around the islands. Timetables for the helicopter, buses and ferries can be found in all travel and tourist offices, as well as on board all ferries and in the hotels.
