THE BELTLINE: EXPLORING ATLANTA’S URBAN OASIS

It’s a walking trail. It’s a bike path. It’s a green space. It’s an art museum. It’s a gym. It’s an arboretum. It’s a place to play. It’s th e Atlanta BeltLine!

While you might think of the BeltLine as something simple, it has a lot to offer and appeals to everyone. Here are some fun ways to spend a day (or two) exploring this 22-mile long (and growing) Atlanta destination that connects 45 intown neighborhoods this spring.

WALK ON THE WEST SIDE

There are a few trails on this side of town that connect and let you explore one of Atlanta’s oldest areas. If you start on the West End Trail, you can see the 0-mile marker and start of the whole BeltLine. The Westside Trail is a perfect place to take advantage of the Arboretum Tours, which are walking tours led by Trees Atlanta and give you an insight into native plants and trees in our area. This trail is also home to some of the BeltLine’s most interesting art — murals and sculptures created by local artists.

n Nearby Attractions: Highlights of this historic neighborhood include Hammonds House Museum and Wren’s Nest. The former celebrates artists of African descent, and the latter is the historic home of author Joel Chandler Harris. These museums are both accessible off of the 3-mile Westside Trail.

n Sweet Treat: Honeysuckle Gelato’s West End location just off the BeltLine in the Lee & White building acts as their “test” kitchen, so flavors rotate often and it’s where you can get a taste of something new. In addition to gelato, they offer baked goods, slushies and craft sodas.

NAVIGATING THE NORTH SIDE

The Northside Trail is approximately 1 mile long and gives visitors a true sense of nature in the city. Part of this trail goes through Tanyard Creek Park and features a large playground and rock-climbing wall. The Northeast Trail – Segment 2 was completed in November accounting for nearly half of the planned multi-use loop that will reach from Piedmont Park to the Lindbergh MARTA Station when fully finished.

n Nearby Attraction: The Bobby Jones Golf Course sits just off of this trail. The historic course is also home to the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, and restaurant and golf academy. The Cupps Link 5-hole, par 3 course is perfect for families. Children play for free, adults can play two rounds for $10 or free if you’re caddying for a child.

n Sweet Treat: Just a short drive away, Izzy’s Ice Kreme located inside a Greek restaurant, is a must-try if you’re in the area. They offer traditional shakes and cones, but if you want to be more adventurous, try one of their Euro-style sundaes, including baklava Nutella or sour cherry split.

SIGHTSEEING ON THE SOUTH SIDE

This trail is unpaved but still plenty of fun. There are two parks to enjoy off of the Southside Trail — D.H. Stanton Park is super family-friendly with a splash pad, playground and baseball diamond while Boulevard Crossing Park is more open with lots of green space and sports fields. Both options are perfect for a summer picnic! With easy access from Grant Park, the Southside Trail is a great add on after a Sunday visit to the farmers market.

n Nearby Attractions:

The closest attraction to the Southside Trail is Zoo Atlanta, which is home to dozens of animal habitats and features a playground and splash pad for the kids. If you have older kids, Oakland Cemetery is also in the area and a meaningful way to explore the city’s history.

n Sweet Treat: Inside the 9-acre Beacon development, just off the BeltLine at Hill Street, sits A Haute Cookie — an edible cookie dough heaven. You can top your dough with ice cream, and you can get your cookie baked (if you prefer a crunch). They have glutenfree and vegan options, so even those with allergies can indulge.

EXPLORING THE EAST SIDE

Start your adventure at Ponce City Market, which is home to a food hall and shops. The roof boasts mini golf and amusement park style games. There’s plenty of parking and you can stop off for bathrooms before you hit the trail. You can opt for walking or biking (there are rental options, but kids’ bikes aren’t the norm, so check ahead of time). Just a short walk away is the Historic Old Fourth Ward Park, complete with a playground and splash pad. A little farther down, you can also head to Piedmont Park off the BeltlLine to enjoy a picnic or play. If you have older kids and a sense of adventure, extend your hike by connecting to the Freedom Parkway Trail, which will add about 4,000 steps to your journey.

n Nearby Attraction: The Atlanta Botanical Garden is within walking distance of Piedmont Park. The Garden has an entry fee but is well worth it. There are lots of kidcentric activities, including Garden Playtime, Storybook Time, Garden Grooves, Sprouting Scientists and more. Check their website for days and times.

n Sweet Treat: For a combination of nostalgic and new candies, check out Sweet Inman’s Candies at Krog Street Market. The food hall is located between Irwin Street and Edgewood Avenue on the BeltLine and has bike parking.

PLAY BALL!

Atlanta is lucky to have the only existing major league franchise to have played every season since professional baseball came into existence. Truist Park, where the Atlanta Braves play, is also unique; it houses the first zip line and climbing tower in a major league ballpark. Ready to enjoy some baseball? Here’s how:

Atlanta Braves fans are rooting for a fifth World Series win in 2024! The home opener day is April 5, when the Braves will battle the Arizona Diamondbacks.

From the enormous Atlanta Braves symbol made out of LEGO bricks to the monument garden, there is so much to see and do before the first pitch. Hope & Will’s Sandlot, a state-of-the-art kids zone (where you’ll find that zip line) has carnival games and more. Game tokens are $1 each. The Braves Kids Club is free for ages 14 and younger; check the website for special benefits, including giveaways and discounts.

Special Offers

On Family Sundays, kids ages 14 and younger can run the bases after the game, enjoy free entry to Hope & Will’s Sandlot, and score giveaways like Braves bobbleheads. Check the website for more special events and offers, including Coca-Cola Wednesdays, when fans can sit in the Coca-Cola corner for any Wednesday for $20. On select days, the T-Mobile Value Pack ($30+) includes a game ticket, snack and drink. Upgrade your game experience with Batting Practice Experience tickets ($105+), where you can go on the field pregame to watch batting practice up-close and personal. Tours of Truist Park ($20-$32) are offered year-round and take guests to the press box, dugout and more.

Good to Know

Purchase parking passes online prior to the game, and use the Waze app to navigate to your specific lot, since each lot has its own address. Each ticket holder can bring their own food and one bottle of water into the stadium. The food must fit inside a clear, gallon-sized plastic bag. Find more information on mlb.com/braves.

Baseball is often referred to as America’s favorite pastime, but why? Maybe because the sport is nearly 180 years old!

CATCH A GAME IN GEORGIA’S MINOR LEAGUES

n Gwinnett Stripers

The Stripers will take on the Louisville Bats on home opening day April 2! Special nights at Coolray Field include fireworks, giveaways, Star Wars Night and Sunday Fundays. milb.com/gwinnett

n Rome Braves

Catch a game at AdventHealth Stadium; opening day is April 5 as the Braves battle the Hickory Crawdads. Check the website for ticket promotions and giveaways, including T-shirt Tuesdays and Sunday Fun-days. milb.com/rome

MORE FAN FAVORITES

n The Macon Bacon, part of Georgia’s Coastal Game League, open at historic Historic Luther Williams Field on May 25. Game themes include Fan Appreciation Fireworks, Hawaiian Night and Star Wars Night. Stop in the Pork Shop for souvenirs. maconbaconbaseball.com

n When the Savannah Bananas play at Historic Grayson Stadium, it’s part circus, part sporting event, with dancing players, a dad cheering squad and plenty of craziness. Tickets can be hard to find, but if you’re planning a trip to Savannah, try not to miss seeing this exhibition team play. thesavannahbananas.com

LET YOUR EYES PLAY TRICKS ON YOU AT THE MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS

Things are definitely not always as they appear when you visit The Museum of Illusions. My crew of 5th graders had a blast exploring the interactive elements of the museum and learning how each illusion works. I enjoyed it as well and recommend checking it out for these reasons:

LOTS OF LAUGHS

GREAT PHOTO OPS

A lot of the fun from the exhibits are the photos that reveal the illusions. There are markers on the floor to guide you about where to stand to take the photos or take advantage of the museum’s built-in cameras by scanning the ticket they give you when you arrive. This is especially helpful if you only have two in your party as many of the illusions require two or more people to get the full effect.

Thanks to the wacky photo reveals and silly positions you may find yourself in, there was plenty of laughing during our visit. My son and his friend got a huge kick out of pretending each other were the main dish and seeing how their sizes changed in the various exhibits.

THE VORTEX TUNNEL

This was by far the kids’ favorite thing! I have to warn other parents, though. It was my least favorite thing, and I spoke to a couple of other moms who agreed. Though the walkway itself is stationary, it REALLY feels like you are walking through space, so if you don’t like roller coasters or get motion sickness, I suggest just waiting by the exit of the tunnel like I did while the boys went through the tunnel at least a dozen times!

A LITTLE LEARNING ALONG THE WAY

Each of the experiences from color illusions to spatial ones and everything in between are explained in just a few sentences. It’s great for older kids because they can read the information themselves and, for younger kids, you can easily tell them how and why the illusion worked.

Know Before You Go:

n To make your experience smooth, be sure to buy a timed entrance ticket before you arrive. The tours are self-guided, so the number of people per entry is limited. Lines did still form at a few of the more interactive or illusions, but they moved quickly.

n The Museum is located on an upper level at Atlantic Station near the “number 5” parking marker. You can also park closer to “number 2” but will have to walk a bit more. The first two hours of parking are free, so if you only do the Museum, you won’t have to pay to park.

n Try to limit how much stuff you bring into the Museum with you. Many of the illusions are active, so having your hands free is helpful.

The Details

The Museum of Illusions 264 19th St. NW, Atlanta; moiatlanta.com

n Tickets: Adults, $29; ages 5-12, $24; ages 4 and younger, free.

n Hours: The Museum of Illusions is open from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. daily, unless there is a holiday.
