The Road Paved by Peachtree Every Atlantan can think of a story about Peachtree Street, and just about every Atlantan can tell you how this street connects to his or her life. Discover your own connection to the fabled road with help from this guide.

tlanta is home to more than 70 streets that display the name “Peachtree,” including the most well-known, Peachtree Street. This main thoroughfare travels through Buckhead, Midtown and Downtown, connecting attractions, restaurants, shopping and neighborhoods. You won’t find many peach trees on the road, for Peachtree Street was named for a large Creek Indian settlement called Standing Pitch Tree. As the story

goes, the Creek used trees with fresh pitch, or sap from a pine tree, for solemnizing treaties. “Pitch tree” became “peach tree” to English speakers. The Peachtree Trail stretched from northeast Georgia to Standing Pitch Tree along the Chattahoochee River. Peachtree Road began in 1812 at Fort Daniel in what is now Gwinnett County, and traveled along the course of the trail to the Chattahoochee. Some areas of the present road trace this

route. Peachtree Street’s official boundaries are from Memorial Drive on the south side to the Gwinnett and Hall county line on the north. In between, the byway is called Peachtree Street, Road, Boulevard and Industrial Boulevard. Landmarks on this welltraveled community connector include the Westin Peachtree Plaza, 191 Peachtree Tower, Georgia-Pacific Tower and SunTrust Plaza dominating Downtown. In Midtown, find Atlanta’s tallest building, the Bank of America Plaza, plus The Fox Theatre, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and the Woodruff Arts Center. Buckhead boasts numerous luxury hotels, The Shops Buckhead Atlanta, Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza.

CONVENTION & ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT LOCATION: One half mile southwest of Peachtree Street GETTING THERE: Take the Green or Blue MARTA line to the Dome/GWCC/ Philips/CNN station and exit into the heart of the convention & entertainment district. MARTA’s bus routes include The Peach shuttle (route 110, which connects Downtown to Buckhead via Peachtree Street). The Atlanta Streetcar stretches east to west on a 2.7-mile loop that runs from the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park to Centennial Olympic Park. The 12-stop route gives access to dining, attractions, hotels, parks and cultural establishments.

In the center of Downtown is the convention & entertainment district, a 15-minute trip from the airport. Each year, numerous meetings and events take place here, but you’ll also find dining, attractions and nightlife. Most of Downtown’s attractions form a ring around Centennial Olympic Park, included in a newly-branded “Centennial Park District.” This green space provides the Fountain of Rings as well as playgrounds and many areas to explore. Centennial Olympic Park itself will be undergoing renovations until 2019. Please visit Centennial Olympic Park www.gwcca.org/park for the latest updates. Georgia Aquarium is one of these attractions around the park. Discover more than 100,000 creatures and experience the AT&T Dolphin Celebration, the 4-D Funbelievable Theatre, the SunTrust Pier 225 Sea Lion Gallery and puffins and other seabirds in the Cold Water Quest gallery. Georgia Aquarium is planning a major expansion expected to debut in late 2020 that includes a new entrance and a new exhibit space that will house hammerheads and other species of sharks.

Next door, World of Coca-Cola features a 4-D theater, the Vault of the Secret Formula, a live-action bottling line and the opportunity to taste more than 100 Coca-Cola products. The world headquarters of CNN, CNN International and HLN Networks also are located in this area. CNN Studio Tours allows visitors to go behind the scenes of their favorite daytime shows. The Children’s Museum of Atlanta recently added two additional permanent exhibits, a new 3,000-square-foot mezzanine level, enhanced existing galleries and programming with a new focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). The 200-foot SkyView Atlanta Ferris wheel boasts more than 42 gondolas, each holding up to six people. A 15-minute flight gives visitors a spectacular view of the city. Center for Civil and Human Rights is the first venue in the world where visitors can learn about the history of the American civil rights movement, contemporary human rights movements and how they are connected. Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame provides fans a shrine for recognizing the game’s top players and coaches, an indoor football field and rotating exhibits. Anchored by Centennial Olympic Park, the Centennial Park District houses a thriving entertainment area. Restaurants provide both fine dining and family friendly options. Visit State Farm Arena for NBA Atlanta Hawks basketball game action. The NFL Atlanta Falcons and MLS Atlanta United FC play at the new retractable-roof Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

DOWNTOWN Continued from page 11 National Historical Park engages guests with a visitor center exploring King’s legacy, the King Birth Home, the historic and new sanctuaries of Ebenezer Baptist Church, the burial sites of King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, and the International Walk of Fame — a memorial made of shoe prints from influential civil rights activists. In the 1940s and 50s, Sweet Auburn flourished economically with AfricanAmerican-owned businesses, newspapers, churches and nightclubs. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, Sweet Auburn has invested in connectivity boosting initiatives like the Atlanta Streetcar, which runs from the King Center to Centennial Olympic Park. Originally opened in 1918, the Sweet Auburn Curb Market offers produce, meats and dairy from local farms as well as artisan shops and eateries.

Castleberry Hill’s early 20th century commercial and industrial structures give the area a distinctive, urban look. Art galleries such as the Besharat Gallery, a hip, European style salon located in an 1880s building, restaurants including No Mas! Cantina, boutiques and loft housing make this place appealing to locals, visitors and the almost-always-present film crews shooting the newest movie or television show.

FAIRLIE-POPLAR HISTORIC DISTRICT LOCATION: Fairlie-Poplar is one-quarter mile from Peachtree Street in Downtown Atlanta. GETTING THERE: Take the Red or Gold MARTA line to the Peachtree Center station. Walk south on Peachtree Street directly into Fairlie-Poplar.

The Fairlie-Poplar Historic District has been revitalized with artist studios, galleries, restaurants and nightspots. Located near Georgia State University, this Broad Street in Fairlie-Poplar Historic District neighborhood’s vibrancy is complemented by many of Downtown’s cultural institutions. Rialto Center for the Arts amps up the night with national and international jazz, world music and dance. The Balzer Theater at Herren’s spotlights independent plays with a Southern edge from Theatrical Outfit. For national tours and concerts, visit The Tabernacle, a renovated church-turned-concert venue. In Woodruff Park, take the kids to the Woodruff Park Playground in the northwestern corner. MIDTOWN Another of Atlanta’s architecturally inspired arts destinations is The Fox Theatre. Designed in the 1920s, this National Historic Landmark was originally a Yaarab Temple Shrine Mosque with lavish structures, painted details such as the indoor Arabian courtyard ceiling and a sky full of flickering stars. Throughout the year, The Fox offers guided tours, concerts and Broadway shows. Dive into the story of Margaret Mitchell at the Margaret Mitchell House, managed by the Atlanta History Center. Tours of the apartment where she wrote “Gone With the Wind” are offered. Margaret Mitchell House Walk across 10th street to the Federal Reserve Bank Money Museum, where exhibits explain the history of American banking, and provide a glimpse of the bank’s automated vault and cash-processing areas. The Atlanta campus of Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) offers four free galleries depicting fashion, photography and more. SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film celebrates the art of fashion by offering cutting-edge exhibitions, events, films and forums. Piedmont Park has provided a green space for Atlantans since 1904. Bordered by 10th Street, the park welcomes visitors to play sports, fish and picnic, with two playgrounds, a public pool and a dog park. Adjacent to Piedmont Park is the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The Garden features more than 30 acres of gardens, forest and wildflower trails, a restaurant, the 10,000-square-foot Fuqua Orchid Center and the Canopy Walk among the treetops of the Storza Woods. New in Midtown: Plans are underway for a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare. The Midtown Art Walk will extend along Peachtree Walk from MARTA’s Midtown Station at 10th Street to Arts Center Station at 14th Street, making room for public art, inviting plazas, and weekend festivities in the open air.

WEST MIDTOWN LOCATION: West Midtown is located between I-75/85, North Avenue and Northside Drive, just under a mile from Peachtree Street. GETTING THERE: Take the Red or Gold MARTA line to the Arts Center station and follow signs pointing to buses. Free Atlantic Station shuttles run every 5-10 minutes. The Georgia Tech Trolley is a free shuttle that operates on an east-west route and stops at the Midtown Marta station.

Originally the Atlantic Steel Mill, Atlantic Station is an outdoor mall, combining shopping, dining and entertainment. Enjoy free concerts in the park, catch the latest blockbuster at the Regal 18 movie theater and ice skate in the winter. There are more than 40 shops in Atlantic Station including boutique brands coupled with Dillard’s, H&M and IKEA. Grab a bite at Chick-a-Biddy or The Pig & The Pearl. Atlantic Station gets a thumbs up for having ample parking with two complimentary hours. Georgia Tech is located in this area, and includes Ferst Center for the Arts, hosting jazz, dance, other music genres, comedy performances and “Urban Nutcracker” by Ballethnic Dance Company in November.

n affluent area, Buckhead is full of everything from sweeping mansions and high-end shopping to progressive restaurants and nightlife. LOCAL TIP: Same road, different name. Peachtree Street becomes Peachtree Road when entering Buckhead from Midtown.

BUCKHEAD COMMERCIAL DISTRICT LOCATION: Peachtree Road runs right through the Buckhead Commercial District where it intersects with Piedmont Road and Lenox Road. GETTING THERE: Take the MARTA North Springs Red Line and exit at Buckhead Station to land in the middle of the Buckhead Commercial District. Bus routes complement MARTA’s rail service: “the buc” is a free shuttle service connecting hotels, shopping areas, MARTA and more.

If you’re looking for hotel luxury, this area has it all, from The Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead and The St. Regis Atlanta to Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta and The Whitley. The Shops Buckhead Atlanta is the city’s most recent live-work-play development. It encompasses six blocks and is anchored by Hermes, Atlantastarted Spanx and Etro. Everything about Little Five Points is Bohemian chic. Take in the music of street performers or find treasures in vintage apparel shops, eateries, vinyl stores, tattoo parlors, independent bookstores, pubs — and even a giant, 30-foot-tall skull (home of The Vortex restaurant), but this edgy artfulness pales in comparison to the people who live and work in this area. Though the main strip of Little Five is relatively compact, running mainly along Euclid Avenue and part of Moreland, it is packed with visitors and vendors. Come to Little Five and get a dose of edgy theater at 7 Stages Theatre, music at Variety Playhouse or Star Community Bar (don’t miss the Elvis shrine), and visit Horizon Theatre Company for contemporary plays.

There’s a lot going on in this neighborhood that has emerged as one of Atlanta’s hippest in just a few short years. Old Fourth Ward (OFW) is located in an area originally settled in the early 1800s. Visitors can see restored shotgun houses, Victorian homes and craftsman bungalows. One big asset to the area has been the proximity to John Lewis Freedom Parkway and the Atlanta BeltLine, which has inspired growth and community investment. The Historic Fourth Ward Park encompasses 17 acres of new green space, a two-acre lake, playground, a splash pad, an outdoor theater, athletic field and a world-class skate park. Also in Old Fourth Ward is Ponce City Market with a food hall offering many local favorites, retail shops and Skyline Park on the roof. Venture down Edgewood Avenue for bars and other hot spots.
