Presented by Jennifer and Kevin Box, Robert J. Lang, Te Jui Fu, Michael G. LaFosse, and Beth Johnson | Tuesday, September 6, 7 p.m. Creating an origami object is difficult enough – now dream of it becoming the most archival object it can be by collaborating with a team to make a museum quality metal sculpture. How do Jennifer and Kevin Box work with the origami artists, and what is the process of casting and fabricating the creations from paper to metal? What messages do they hope will remain for thousands of years, speaking to future generations?

The Southeast’s Paradoxical Palm: Sabal palmetto
Presented by Jono Miller | Monday, October 17, 7 p.m. Join natural historian and author, Jono Miller, for a wide-ranging introduction to this common palm that can live for centuries, survive fire, flood, and freeze, and which played a role in our fight for independence. Once viewed as a potential building material for low cost housing, cabbage palms (or palmettos) are the state tree of both of Georgia’s coastal neighbors and a distinctive feature of Georgia’s coast. If you’re curious about the natural and cultural history of the southeastern coasts, you won’t want to miss this illustrated talk. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Beauty of the Wild
Presented by Darrel Morrison | Tuesday, October 25, 7 p.m. Darrel will discuss his book Beauty of the Wild and the people and places that have influenced his philosophy toward designing landscapes in a number of different places, always with the goals of their being simultaneously: ecologically sound, experientially rich, “of the place,” and dynamic, changing over time. This lecture is presented in partnership with Trees Atlanta. A book signing will follow the lecture.
The Philip and Elkin Alston Lecture Series is made possible by the generous support of the Charles Loridans Foundation.
