Dear Sandy Springs Neighbors, Yes, we are neighbors! I have lived in Sandy Springs since 1990 and our magazine office has been located on West Wieuca, adjacent to Chastain Park, for nearly 20 years. I raised my children here and we spent our time enjoying NYO, the Chastain Horsepark, Morgan Falls, the Chastain Amphitheatre and the Sandy Springs community as a whole. So needless to say, I know this area pretty well. At least I thought I did! With each issue of My Sandy Springs, I learn about so many cool places, people and events I had no idea were here.

e’s the veteran singer, songwriter and frontman for Collective Soul and now The Sweet Tea Project, she’s an executive at intimate-apparel company SPANX and, together, Ed and Michaeline

They’ve lived here for seven years and their children attend schools located nearby. In a way, Ed’s music brought them to the neighborhood.

“Chastain Park actually led us here,” Michaeline reveals. “We have spent a good amount of time at the amphitheatre over the years and loved both the look and the warmth of the area.

Their love for the neighborhood keeps them very involved in its development, with both Ed and Michaeline committed to the Chastain Park Conservancy. Michaeline explains, “The Conservancy is made up of community trailblazers who dedicate their time to nurture and beautify the Chastain area with sustainability, culture and world-class facilities in mind. We were approached by the Conservancy three years ago when they wanted to raise funds to double the walkways and completely modernize the children’s play area.”

The Rolands immediately agreed to volunteer, Ed putting together and headlining what became a sold-out concert of Atlanta talents. “Those who were there may remember that Ed told everyone our home address and welcomed them to come by for a drink anytime,” Michaeline recalls, laughing. “So here we go again, this October. The Conservancy is tirelessly improving the park and we are hoping to raise the money necessary to complete the final initiatives.”

When not hanging out in the park, the Rolands enjoy dining throughout Sandy Springs. “We love the variety of independently owned and operated restaurants and stores where everyone knows our name—in addition to Ed’s lunch order. Ed particularly loves to eat out for lunch and he is the ‘Norm’ of Hearth Pizza Tavern, where he meets his good buddy and Sandy Springs local Jeff Dauler of the ‘Jeff and Jenn’ radio show,” Michaeline says. Some of their other regular spots include Brooklyn Cafe, Breadwinner, Rays and Rumi’s Kitchen. And, Michaeline is known to bring groups of friends into Mays Massage on Roswell Road to indulge in a last-minute massage.

The Lefont Sandy Springs is a family favorite—they offer independent and critically acclaimed films, host the Jewish Film Festival and run the top current movies.

Michaeline sums up what resonates most with this dynamic couple and their active family: “Sandy Springs offers a great deal of diversity and that in itself is actually the top reason we love living in the community.”

Jill Binkley

Jill Binkley founded the nonprofit TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Center to provide the support system she wished she’d had during her initial battle with the disease. When she was first diagnosed in 2000, she was blindsided by the emotional and physical side effects of treatment. As a trained physical therapist specializing in orthopedics and sports injury, Jill knew that, after major surgery, some kind of physical therapy or rehab is often required. After a mastectomy, patients can experience pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion in the shoulder and arm and, like Jill, develop swelling in the arms, called lymphedema. Yet, when she approached her medical team for resources to help, she was shocked to discover that they didn’t really have direction for her.

Jill became determined to develop those resources herself and opened TurningPoint in 2003. The center started with a roster of services based on Jill’s own therapy knowledge. Eventually, as she learned of various patients’ needs, other programs were added to meet the demand—from lymphedema management to nutrition and exercise programs to specialized guidance for those with metastatic breast cancer. Every person on staff has been personally impacted by breast cancer, either through their own journey or that of a person close to them. By 2007, when Jill received a second breast cancer diagnosis, she felt prepared and supported by the TurningPoint team.

In 2013, TurningPoint moved into a new facility in Sandy Springs, on Roswell Road not far from Morgan Falls. It’s been very important to the team to serve as many patients as possible, so Jill notes, “Sandy Springs was selected because of the terrific accessibility to Highway 400 for patients driving and great access to MARTA for people who are unable to drive due to surgery or lack of a vehicle.” The added bonus of this location, she’s noticed, “is that everything is so convenient! When not at the clinic, I can be found at early morning spin class at Lifetime Fitness. One of my favorite restaurants, when I want something a little different, is Emidios. I love their mix of Portuguese and other Mediterranean flavors. Emidios has also supported TurningPoint by donating a great cooking class to the auction for our annual Pink Affair in March!”

Less than two years ago, Jennifer Cruce fulfilled a dream that she’d had since she was a little girl—to live and work in Sandy Springs. “This was a destination for my family all my life. I grew up in Decatur and my parents would come here to visit. My dad’s favorite restaurant was Ray’s on the River. Going there was always a treat.” It seems fitting that Jennifer is now the executive director of Sandy Springs Hospitality and Tourism, a place where she can educate potential visitors about all the benefits of visiting this city.

What is the main focus of your job?

because of all the greenspace, you don’t feel closed in. We are so centrally located by Highway 400 and 285, but then we’ve got the Chattahoochee Recreation Area with forests, the river and so many great trails, too. You can catch a Broadway show one day and catch a fish the next!

Q

When you have out-of-town guests or family visit, where do you take them?

I take meetings at il Giallo all the time and the food at Hammocks is fantastic. I love Food 101 and now we have Tupelo Honey Cafe, too. Our office is right by Nothing Bundt Cakes, which is always a real temptation! Morgan Falls is a fun place to take guests—High Country Outfitters and Nantahala Outdoor Center are right there if you want to rent a SUP board or river raft.
