ometimes life can turn on a dime. One minute everything’s all planned out, the next . . . well, it all shifts. HGTV star
Chip Wade, a resident of Johns Creek, talks about how he thought he would go into mechanical engineering after graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology, but now has forged a career out of his love of carpentry, design and home-building instead. Not everybody can say they can look back and pinpoint a moment when their life took a sharp left turn. But Chip Wade says he definitely can. “I answered a random email one day, asking if I wanted to audition to be a sidekick on a show about building and designing.” A producer who was putting together the cast of a new show, “Designed to Sell,” lived in Wade’s neighborhood. “He sent

out a bunch of emails to everyone he knew and when Chip saw it, he thought it might be fun to try out. He thought it was just a one-time thing to be the carpenter on the show,” says Pauli Wade, Chip’s wife. “When they asked him to send a ‘headshot,’ he didn’t know what they were talking about, so he sent our wedding picture—it seemed to do the trick!” Chip acknowledges that he was “oblivious to how I looked on camera” at first. Fast forward to today and Chip’s successful track record as a home-improvement guru on

Chip and Pauli take time out from their busy schedules to give back in their community. Here are a few of their favorite charitable organizations.
Chip’s 4 Go-To Charities
Along with raising their three children, Mac, Mara and J.T. (all under the age of seven), Pauli and Chip also run their business, Wade Works, together. Pauli, who manages the real-estate side of Wade Works, acknowledges that it can take some strategizing to run a business and grow a family all in the same household. “We decided that we should assign both times and places to have different conversations,” she explains. “The kitchen is kind of sacred to me, so we try only to have ‘relationship conversations’ during dinner time with the kids. Then, we only have work-related conversations when we are in our home office. We try to leave emotions outside that room and just focus on the business.”

TV proves his staying power. He’s appeared on hit shows such as “Curb Appeal,” “Showdown Design Star,” and Ellen Degeneres’ “Design Challenge.” His current show, “Elbow Room” won an Emmy in 2014 for best lifestyle program. Yet, he’s found a way to balance his own career screentime with crucial family facetime in an environment that nurtures both priorities.
Chip says they chose Johns Creek four years ago as the best place to raise their family because it’s ideal for growing both a family and a business. “We love the greenways that run through this area. We pop the kids on their bikes and go for a run all the time. It’s perfect because the paths are shaded and we can get everybody outside almost every day of the year,” Chip enthuses. Pauli says of Chip, “He’s the creative talent in our business. He’s a natural-born salesperson; people are drawn to him.” One thing is for sure, the Wades take full advantage of everything Johns Creek has to offer. Chip praises the area, saying, “We’re setting down roots. We love it here.”

The restaurant Sugo has become something of a fixture in Johns Creek. Since 2003, its unique cuisine, a blend of Greek and Italian influences, and cozy atmosphere have welcomed visitors. The founder of the eatery, Federico Castellucci (or “Mr. C” as locals often call him), lends his characteristic charm to everything he does, from greeting guests to working with staff in the kitchen.
Q
You were headed to law school after you graduated from Boston College. What changed your mind and pushed you to run a restaurant?
My mom and dad ran a restaurant in Rhode Island at the time and there was a big fire. We had a choice—stay

there and rebuild or give up. We chose not to give up. We named the new restaurant Archie’s Tavern and it became the largest steakhouse in the state!
Q
Why did you choose to leave and come to Atlanta?
I was bitten by the restaurant bug, but Rhode Island at the time (1996) was going through an economic crisis. Businesses were leaving the state by the hundreds. I knew I had to leave and start over somewhere. We moved to Atlanta as much for the better, more diverse business climate as for the warm weather! I am so proud of my kids (Federico III, Stephanie and John) who run the entire company and do an amazing job.

Why the name Sugo?
Sugo means “sauce” in Italian. When I was young, aunts and uncles would come to Grandma’s house for a meal, bringing whatever fresh ingredients they
had from the garden. All the ingredients went into her sauce or salad. That’s the idea here. The “ingredients” of my sauce are the wonderful staff, the local vendors, a great atmosphere and, of course, my wife, Nancy, hugging everyone at the door.

DANCER • PAGEANT WINNER • ACTIVIST
Recently crowned Miss Georgia 2016, Patricia Ford is poised to compete for the crown of Miss America in September. Beneath her calm, cool exterior is an incredible drive. “I am competitive, I admit it,” she says. “Growing up, I spent a lot of time at the Atlanta Professional Dance Academy in Johns Creek. I was there after school most days and I loved it.” There, she studied classical ballet technique, but with a twist. “They taught Chinese folk dance there, too,” she explains, “so I learned to combine the two forms of dance.” She learned it well—so well that she chose to dance for the talent portion of the Miss Georgia competition. “My mom came to America from China in 1987. The Chinese culture is a huge part of my life. At the dance academy, there were teachers and lots of other dancers’ moms who were Chinese, too. We even got to fly to China once to compete on their version of ‘America’s Got Talent.’ It taught me to embrace people with diverse backgrounds.”

When asked how she ended up competing in pageants in the first place, she laughs. “A sorority sister in college convinced me that I should give it a try. She loaned me her evening gown, her dance music, everything I needed to enter the pageant.” She won the Miss Cherokee Rose pageant in 2013 and has competed in other pageants as well. “In the Miss Georgia pageant, I felt at peace. I knew I was prepared and I gained a lot of confidence because of that. I could just be myself. I like to say, ‘I do my best and let God do the rest.’”
She’s excited to go to Atlantic City, New Jersey, this fall to compete in the Miss America Pageant. She says she’s nervous about the exhausting week-long schedule before the big night, but “I’ve met all the ladies and now I have a friend in every state!” As part of her duties as Miss Georgia 2016, Ford helps fundraise for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. “It’s a cause near and dear to my heart, I’m so proud to raise awareness about their miracle stories.” Learn more about Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at MissAmericaForKids.org/Donate/ PatriciaFord.
