Step 1
SOAK
Soak the Whetstone: Submerge the whetstone in water for about 10-15 minutes, or until air bubbles stop rising. This ensures the stone is properly saturated and ready for sharpening.
Step 1 Step 1
Maintain Moisture: Keep the stone’s surface wet while sharpening. Sprinkle water on the stone as needed to create a slurry (a thin mixture of water and stone particles) that aids in sharpening.
Prepare Your Workspace: Place the soaked stone on a Southern Samurai non-slip bamboo base.
Step 2
Use Consistent Pressure: Apply even pressure while moving the blade across the stone. Let the stone do the work; there’s no need to press too hard.
Professional tip: to maintain a consistent angle carefully place alighnment tool on back of knife. [to avoid scratching blade place a drop of dish soap on alignment tool before placing on blade.]
Alternate Sides: Sharpen each side of the blade evenly, and be sure to work with the coarser grit first (400 or 1000) before moving to the finer grit (3000 or 8000). 10 minutes a side or more (preferably)
Step 3
Instructions
Step 3 Dry the Stone: Pat the stone dry with a clean cloth or paper towel. Allow it to air dry completely before storing to prevent mold or damage.
After Use
Clean the Stone: After sharpening, rinse the stone with water to remove any metal particles and debris. Avoid using soap, as it can clog the stone’s pores.
