EMERGE & EXCEL - FIVE YEARS OF ADVANCING NOTRE DAME

BY MARC BUTIKOFER, DEVELOPMENT & ALUMNI On June 30, 2017 another school year at Notre Dame came to a close.

The 2016-2017 school year was marked by great accomplishments by the students – awards won, paths forged, dreams set. It also marked the graduation of the first Notre Dame class to have completed four full years utilizing a tablet for their schooling.

Initiated in 2012, the tablet program is part of a wide array of enhancements made to the Notre Dame program through the five year strategic plan ‘Emerge and Excel’.

Notre Dame will graduate “purposeful leaders with virtuous character.” Taken from the Vision set out for Notre Dame in the College’s Strategic Plan ‘Emerge and Excel’, this ideal has guided every decision made throughout the last five years at the College. As the Board of Regents and staff have stewarded the philosophy for Notre Dame established by its Founders, Père Athol Murray and the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis, the College has advanced its programming for students in the 21st Century and built on the great tradition of leadership which has graduated 7 members of the Order of Canada, countless provincial Order of Merit winners, CEOs, Captains, Professionals, Entrepreneurs and Parents.

‘Emerge and Excel’ was approved on June 12, 2012. Lead by the Board of Regents and newly appointed President Rob Palmarin, the plan laid the groundwork to enable Notre Dame to be recognized as one of Canada’s leading boarding schools.

Emerge and Excel identified three organizational strategies to advance the College’s vision and mission and build organizational resiliency.

“As we started the planning, we knew that we had incredible strengths to build upon including our historical roots, our people and specific parts of our program including hockey, boarding and components of our academics” stated Rob Palmarin. “But there were major areas that needed advancement including the future of

our academic program, facilities and our finances. When we released the plan we did have some feedback about the name for the plan, ‘Emerge and Excel’. Some thought we had changed our motto ‘Luctor et Emergo’.

That wasn’t the case but it was great to see that people were listening!”

To complete the strategic planning process, the Board of Regents undertook an engagement process unlike anything done before. Through survey’s, interviews and focus groups, a total of 1,166 students, staff, parents, donors and alumni were asked for their input into what the future should look like for Notre Dame.

“It was a very strenuous engagement process but it was important to complete. Thankfully we learned through this process that there was a high degree of satisfaction from our students, alumni and parents with their experience at Notre Dame. We also learned that there was concern that our athletics, specifically hockey, may be taking priority over academics.

Finally, the survey reinforced our feelings of concern that our facilities and finances needed some major investment.”

With the planning process complete, the Notre Dame team of staff and the Board of Regents undertook to make the strategic plan a reality.

Built within the three overarching organizational strategies of Programs, Community and Resilience, the plan identified 11 portfolios with a total of 15 key strategies and 44 actions to be undertaken. Ranging from implementing infrastructure for learning to increasing engagement of the Notre Dame community, the actions would each require a significant investment of time and resources to be accomplished.

“The most difficult part of the plan was the scope of our ambitions and the fact that we had left no stone unturned,” remembered Palmarin.

“With 11 portfolios, each with strategies and actions attached to them, there was no area of the College that we were not committed

to improving. It was a whole school effort and for the first several years of the plan it felt like we were rolling out something new each month.”

Throughout the five years of the strategic plan, major investments have been made in the College. The College became among the first schools in Western Canada to provide each student with a tablet. This decision came with major investments in the technology infrastructure and resourcing by the College as well as key transportation partners like Stagecoach Tours who installed WiFi in their fleet enabling students to remain connected to their education even while they are away from campus.

“I believe our greatest achievement was building a technology infrastructure which reinforced our

Notre Dame philosophy and pedagogy of student centered learning. With the incorporation of the tablets and the buy-in from our faculty, we are taking our academics to a new level,” explained Palmarin. “We are proud of our roots, our 98 year history, the proud teaching tradition at Notre Dame and we want to complement and continue to advance it.”

As a school in the 21st Century, efforts continue to be made to ensure balance for its students. Balance starts with providing a well-rounded education focusing on the mind, body and the spirit and supports the students to have balance in their programs and their lives. The teachings of Pere and Mother Edith to educate the whole person continue to be a foundation for the College.

Based on these teachings, the Faculty

completed an Academic Identity Statement which set the bar higher for Notre Dame programs.

“During the engagement process we heard that we needed to step up our game in the areas of communication and engagement,” remembered Palmarin. “We heard that we were not doing a very good job of keeping our alumni, parents and friends educated and involved in the great things happening in Wilcox and throughout the Notre Dame community. I am proud that the direction we took in this area has made a difference.”

Since 2012, the College has worked with Alumni to strengthen the connection with Notre Dame. New positions in Alumni Relations and Communication have been recreated.

Subsequently, the National Alumni Association has been better supported

in their efforts to advance Notre Dame and seven Alumni Chapters have been reinvigorated or formed to complement the very active Alberta Alumni association. The College recently revamped its branding including a new school crest, updated athletic logo and the establishment of 9 promises to our students, their families and the College’s community.

“As we look forward to a new strategic plan, I am proud of the work that has been done,” stated Palmarin.

“In our most recent parent study, we heard great satisfaction in the areas of spiritual programming, academics

and the dorms and satisfaction in other areas of programming including hockey, athletics and food. We know we still have work to do in the areas of facilities but we have taken strides in the right direction over the past five years. We will continue to build upon our culture of philanthropy and enhance our communication with stakeholders through every channel we have available” Thanks to the generous support of donors, the College has been able to invest in the renovation of dorm rooms, the construction of the new Doc Off-Ice Skills Facility and the

completion of needs facility renewal projects including roof replacements and painting around campus.

“Our next five years will be as busy as the past five years. Our focus on advancing Notre Dame is as strong as it has ever been and with the financial support of our community, together we will be able to do incredible things for our College,” foreshadowed Palmarin. “We will continue to fine tune our programs to ensure students are getting a world-class education that teaches them the skills to be Notre Dame Men and Women.

All hockey teams now participate in hockey Phys Ed including classroom on ice and off ice training allowing for more time in the morning and evenings for study and extra curricular activities.

ATHOL MURRAY’S LITERARY TREASURES

BY RUTH BITNER, PRAIRIES NORTH Athol Murray’s Literary Treasues was originally printed in Prairies North - the magazine of Saskatchewan.

We’re on our way to Wilcox, not to pay homage to the dozens of hockey players who honed their skills at this prairie town on the Regina plains, but to visit the museum at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame. My son Kendall, a student of Classics, Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the University of Saskatchewan, and I are eager to explore the manuscript and rare book collection amassed by the college’s founder, Father Athol Murray.

Gerry Scheibel, lifelong resident of Wilcox with 35 years of teaching history to his credit, greets us at the door of the museum. Even before we begin the tour, he has us engrossed in the story of Murray and Notre Dame.

Murray was born into an influential Toronto family in 1892. He was only four years old when his mother died, leaving behind six children. Murray’s father saw to it that his son received a quality education: Loyola College in Montreal, St. Michael’s in Toronto and St. Hyacinthe College in Quebec. As a young Jesuit-educated man, Murray had fallen in love with the classics.

But Murray was undecided about his future. Dissatisfied with a job as a newspaperman, he enrolled in law school but that did not suit him either.

A chance encounter with the writing of St. Augustine led him to St. Augustine Seminary and the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church. However, Murray managed to ruffle a few feathers in his first rather conservative Ontario parishes. By the early 1920s, the bilingual Murray found himself in Regina working with Archbishop Mathieu.

When mischievous youngsters were caught breaking into a local church, the sympathetic Murray offered to take the boys under his wing if charges were dropped. He organized a sports club and soon had them playing hockey and baseball. The club was a life-changer for Father Murray and for the boys.

coincidentally-named St. Augustine parish in Wilcox led Father Murray to open a school where he would teach self-discipline, encourage spiritual growth and inspire a love of learning and sports. The school, founded in 1927, drew some of his boys from Regina and from the local community.

With this introduction to Father Murray’s story, we begin our tour, pausing in front of his desk. There is his old manual typewriter, his aviator’s helmet and his well-worn buffalo coat which, chuckles Scheibel, was seldom buttoned up even in the biting cold of a prairie winter. There is Murray’s ashtray, stained from countless cigarettes, and the priestly vestments he seldom wore. His personal effects only begin to reveal the man whose life and passions are portrayed in the museum.

Moving on, our guide describes the tough times during the Great Depression. Murray did not want a lack of money to deter students from attending his school so he asked parents to pay only what they could afford. A few boys even brought their own living quarters—old threshing crew bunk cars. With the wheels off, the shacks became their home away from home. Heated only by coal and wood stoves, they were dreadfully cold in winter.

A photograph of an old grain truck with homemade enclosure over the back catches our eye. “This is how the hockey team got to their games,” muses Scheibel. “There was a stove inside to keep us from freezing, but it got so hot we’d have to open the back door to cool off. Then it got so cold we’d have to close the door again.”

As we follow Scheibel around the room, he describes the many portraits on the wall. There is one of U.S. President Roosevelt. How, we wonder, did it end up in Wilcox? Murray wrote to many world leaders, we are told.

Apparently his letter to Roosevelt was passed along to his wife Eleanor who commissioned the painting especially for Murray.

Scheibel then points to a portrait of Sister Edith, one of his teachers. “She had a profound influence on me,” he recalls fondly. In fact, it was the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis who established the convent in Wilcox in 1920. It was a girls’ school before Father Murray’s

boys arrived in 1927.

Next we see a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime minister. We learn that Father Murray was a great-nephew of Sir John’s.

Documents relating to the Quebec Conference of 1864, one of the meetings that led to Confederation in 1867, are displayed nearby.

We are then led into the College’s board room named after Rex Beach, an American adventurer, novelist and a friend of Murray’s. One wall is made of fieldstone into which are embedded stone hammers and other indigenous artifacts, large bronze plaques memorializing the room’s namesake, a 19th century Colt revolver and oddly enough, a set of leg irons said to have been worn by Louis Riel when he was captured following the 1885 uprising at Batoche. “We have no proof,” says Scheibel, but he thinks there’s a chance they are authentic.

According to our guide, Father Murray had great respect for First Nations people. That might help to explain the many First Nations

portraits by Nicholas de Grandmaison, a Russian artist who immigrated to the West in 1923. Remarkably, the pastels are done on fine sandpaper imported from France. Scheibel points to his favourite, a likeness of Wolf Tail. “Most of our visitors like this one best.”

Back in the gallery we are directed to a series of sculptures arranged like a frieze around the upper walls. They are reproductions of the Elgin Marbles that once graced the Parthenon in ancient Athens. The sculptures here were salvaged from a bank in Boston, Massachusetts. As a lover of classical art and literature, Father Murray could not abide the thought of their destruction so in 1946 he bought them and had them shipped to Wilcox. When the museum was built in the early 1990s, the sculptures were incorporated into the building design.

Finally, we are ushered into the secure, climate-controlled room that houses the manuscripts and rare books we have come to see. That this collection should be found in Wilcox is a bit of a miracle. Chalk it up to

Murray’s classical education and his wide circle of acquaintances who knew of his passion. One of Murray’s closest friends, Father Bacciochi, a great-nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, brought most of the books with him when he immigrated to Louisiana from Europe in the early 20th century.

Bacciochi ended up serving parishes at Vanguard and Gull Lake before retiring to Swift Current in 1943.

Murray inherited the collection in 1951 and sent two men with an open twoton truck to pick up the irreplaceable treasures.

Scheibel unlocks a showcase, dons his white gloves and leafs through the fragile pages of the Nuremberg Chronicle. Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts, the Chronicle recounts the history of the world to 1492. The Latin text was typeset by hand and printed on a German press in 1493. We marvel at the privilege of seeing a book printed a year after Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas.

Next to the Chronicle is the story

of St. Martin of Tours, a 4th century Catholic bishop. With knife at the ready to scrape away errors, an unknown monk used a quill dipped in ink made of gall and iron salts to copy the text onto fine parchment.

Among the other treasures is a decree by King James I of England written on calfskin in 1603. It still bears its wax seal. There is a manuscript with chain attached. Books were precious because they took months or even years to make, especially if they were written by hand. Some, like this one, were once chained to a desk or table so they could not be stolen.

There are two books labelled “Volumes 2 & 4 of Martin Luther’s German Bible, published 1569.” There is the work of Erasmus written in 1516 along with many more precious volumes. When I ask our host if he has a favourite, he diplomatically replies, “They all are.”

Before we say good-bye, I ask Scheibel what impression I might have of Father Murray if I were to meet him.

“He would sit you down, maybe with a glass of Scotch … he would do all the talking. You wouldn’t get much chance to ask him a question … You would come away with a very lasting impression … I often refer to him as an ordinary person doing extraordinary things.”

To many, Father Murray and Notre Dame are synonymous with hockey.

NHL greats like Vincent Lecavalier, Curtis Joseph and Saskatchewan’s Wendel Clark played for the Hounds.

But Notre Dame has this lesser known claim to fame as home to an aweinspiring repository of rare books.

In Kendall’s words, “When you see such an amazing collection in such an unexpected place, you know there must be a good story behind it.”

The museum is open most weekdays but it is best to call ahead to be sure the affable Gerry Scheibel is on hand to share the stories of his beloved Notre Dame.

NOTRE DAME HOUNDS OPEN STATE-OF-THE-ART OFF ICE HOCKEY SKILLS TRAINING FACILITY

Notre Dame Hounds Raising the Roof on Canadian Hockey Hounds open stateof-the-art off ice hockey skills training facility

The Rapid Hands System will help students improve stickhandling with this unique training station.

Wilcox, SK – December 11,2016 – The Notre Dame Hounds are excited for the grand opening of the addition of a 4,200 square foot state-of-the-art off-ice hockey training facility to the Duncan McNeill Arena, located on the campus of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame.

This facility is made possible through a $1,000,000 in gifts from the Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund at the Calgary Foundation and friends of Daryl K. Seaman. Initiated by Paul J. Hill, long-time patron of Notre Dame and friend to Daryl Seaman, this project will leave a legacy for Doc at Notre Dame, a school to which he was a great supporter and friend.

The facility boasts an impressive 3,000 square foot open synthetic ice surface with enclosed area featuring boards for goalie and player specific

training, synthetic-ice shooting lanes, a Rapid Shot Machine, Rapid Hands Machines and a flexible use skills area for puck handling and passing. This facility will be able to handle 20-25 athletes at a time.

The Off Ice Hockey Skills Facility is attached to the Duncan McNeill’s already impressive Olympic size ice surface, Maier High Performance Strength and Conditioning Facility, skating treadmill, 12 home team dressing rooms equipped with video capabilities and an athletic sport therapy training room featuring a cold and hot tub.

“The new skills training area provides a state of the art facility for the Notre Dame Hound student athletes to assist in their overall skill development”, said General Manager of Hockey, Jeremy Mylymok. “This

facility will provide our players and coaches with the resources to work on specific skill development, which in turn, will transfer to better on ice performance for our athletes and innovation of training methods to be shared with hockey programs across Canada.”

Athol Murray College of Notre Dame offers high school students an ideal environment for their development to become well-rounded, high achieving, successful adults, not only as athletes, but as business and community leaders. Notre Dame enables young adults to see what they are capable of achieving in their lives, and provides each of them the tools to achieve their goals.

The RapidShot Hockey Training System will improve shooting and provide feedback to students on three aspects of their shot.

PÈRE’S 125TH BIRTHDAY ALUMNUS SCHMALZ’68 SHARES A PERSONAL REFLECTION

BY NORINE SCHMALZ’68 Monday January 9th, 2017 would have been Père’s 125th birthday.

Alumnus Norine Schmalz’68 shared a personal reflection of her fond memories of Athol Murray.

Interesting enough, when Norine first met Père she thought he was a “lonely old soul”. After spending a few meal time conversations with him, to her delight, she found out what a magnanimous personality he had.

Norine’s reflection kicked off the application process for the 2017 Père Athol Murray Award presented Alumni Weekend!

NORINNE’S REFLECTION

Thank you Rob for the warm welcome, good morning staff and students, I hope to give you a little bit of insight to the person and character of Père as I knew him.

I was introduced to Père by a long time friend of the family Father David Bauer. Father Dave had recently met Père while establishing his Canadian National Hockey team and Fr.Dave was excited for me, my sister and his niece Jane Bauer to attend Notre Dame and get to know this priest. He wanted us to have this educational experience.

To give you a reference point, being from the States, as a 16 year old with a newly acquired drivers license I wasn’t as excited as Father Dave. For me to leave family and friends and the comforts of home and I do mean comforts, was no easy task, then there is the culture shock but this will be for another time. However, my parents and Fr. Dave won out.

I had no idea of who or what Père was, I saw him as an only as an, old, prairie, parish, priest stuck out in the middle of nowhere trying to keep his school alive on a wing and a prayer.

Edith Hall, the girls dorm, was finished being built in the spring of 1965 by the order of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis for the girls, the year I arrived it was the first full year of the CONVENT, as we called it.

and take care of the girls while Père would look after the boys and taught mainly in the Arts program. He didn’t teach in the High School, but there were days he would drop by.

It was here at Edith Hall that I had the opportunity to sit with Père many mornings as he had his breakfast at the Convent. After his early morning Mass, the Sister would feed him in the kitchen and I would go and sit with him to keep him company and chat.

I thought he was lonely and needed company! As the days grew into months I was learning about this man called Père, where he was from, his privileged background, in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia, about his influential friends like Fred Hill and Brigadier, General Kevin McCusker, I was beginning to realize that he wasn’t as lonely as I had thought and that he had a very full life outside the boundaries of Wilcox. Maybe it was me that was the lonely one!

I would also go and visit Père at his office here in Varsity. I would come for an hour or so and have a drink of scotch out of the scaly glass and listen to Père as he talked about his next adventure or his last Sportsman Dinner where he was the guest of honour. Lots of times he would share an interesting article that he had read or one that he was working on. His office was a total mess, but he knew where everything was and which pile to find it in, he would grab a paper out of the middle of a pile to show me something, he had total recall, he

could recite something he had read in the morning, verbatim, I am sure the man had a photographic memory.

Many times, I would leave his office with a ½ deck of smokes like,Peter Jackson’s Rothmans or Export A. He often shared with his students.

He was a progressive thinker, he was independent, (he returned his Canadian Pension cheques to the government) he was a humanitarian, and he loved intellectual conversation, he was a good listener, and a good speaker, a bit of an eccentric (yes, I did hear him swear but never did I ever hear him take the Lords name in vain) and he was full of energy. This old parish priest turned out to surprise me and to share with me some of his knowledge, for his love of the Greeks, of St. Augustine, of the Renaissance, Natural Law, Sports and God; the two that he loved to talk about were God and Canada. He was so proud to be a Canadian, he liked to throw in some of his French to spice up a speech, he was proud of the Red and White Canadian Flag.

Canada’s 150 anniversary this year would find Père talking about it and addressing it every chance he could.

He would be rallying the troops to t to have something bronzed or some big tribute done by Notre Dame to celebrate this great country Canada’s Birthday, He was a true Canadian Rudyard Kipling’s said it best in his poem “If you can walk with Kings ...and not lose the common touch, that is Père our Notre Dame Man.”

Supportive, Unique and Traditional were the words most used to describe Notre Dame

For nearly 97 years, Athol Murray College has offered a one-of-akind experience built upon a strong sense of family and community, an educational program that develops a student’s unique strengths without neglecting other aspects of his or her growth and an environment where character and values are instilled into students daily. For members of the Notre Dame community this description of Notre Dame is familiar but for people outside of the Notre Dame community, including prospective parents and students looking for a boarding school or sports academy, that message was not clear. On October 29, 2014, Notre Dame invited active donors, alumni, parents, staff, students and friends to participate in a Summit on the future of Notre Dame. On this day, the Notre Dame Brand was challenged by participants of the Summit and the question kept arising “Who Are We?”, “What Does Notre Dame Represent?”, “What Does Notre Dame Promise to Our Students” and “Are we more then a hockey school”?

The Board of Regents of the College heard these questions and knew that it had work to do. Between June 2015 and July 2016, Notre Dame Board of Regents and staff listened, learned and, subsequently, developed what we can strongly say is the answer to the questions we heard in October 2014.

“Notre Dame staff, students and volunteers know who we are – they live it every day – but everyone uses different words to describe what it is we do,” explained Eleah Gallagher’04, Board of Regents Steering Committee member and Rob Palmarin, President of Notre Dame, “This process needed to ensure our the look of our brand represented the school and ‘loaded our lips’ so that each of us were describing it in the same way.”

PHASE 1: In 2015, the journey began to find the “Notre Dame Brand” which was true to who we are today and

honoured our rich history.

The College put out an RFP for Marketing & Graphic Designers to start Phase 1 of our Brand Identity. The steering committee interviewed 4 firms in May of 2015.

June of 2015, the College welcomed The Offord Group, with their graphic partners Hamley & Wooley, on board to help us on this journey. The Offord Group was chosen for their past work with other CAIS Boarding Schools and experience in the educational market.

Hamley & Wooley brought to the table a broad portfolio in the educational & athletic markets.

Over the next year, from June 2015 until July 2016, the Steering Committee, The Offord Group and Hamley & Wooley worked diligently to bring Phase 1 of our brand together.

friends of Notre Dame,” described Dawn Froats’99, Director of Marketing and Communications. “Throughout this entire process when we talked with representations from each of these groups, we heard these words over and over. These words became the basis for our refreshed look and our brand promise. The time and commitment of everyone involved in this process is what gave us a brand that our students and staff are excited about and we hope everyone else will be as well.”

The conclusion of this process for Notre Dame is a refreshed look which clearly defines the school as a strong academic institution with top quality athletic and extracurricular programs. Everyone in the Notre Dame community can now have a solid understanding of what Notre Dame promises to its students, parents, staff and alumni so that we no longer have to answer, “Who are you?” This process has not changed who we are – logos and words cannot do that.

This process has simply given us a comprehensive brand that everyone can use to carry the Notre Dame story out into the world.

It was important for Notre Dame to have a school shield that said the full name of the school, mainly for recruitment purposes as there are several schools

named Notre Dame. We also wanted a logo that had a feeling of academics, and really represented our history and made everyone feel it has been around since day 1920.

2. Notre Dame Athletic Logo - Will only be used to represent Notre Dame Athletics. This logo was updated to reflect the school shield logo’s font & strengthened dog, very minimal changes. The Notre Dame Argos design is identical.

3. N otre Dame Seal – The school crest remains as the Official School Seal, and is reserved for formal, historical, alumni and heritage designations.

FROM THE ARCHIVES – THE NOTRE DAME SPIRIT Originally printed in a 1940’s issue of the NewsHound - author not published If you look the word “spirit” in the dictionary, you will find seventeen different meanings, but not one of these seventeen defines the word in terms big and vast enough to convey to the world the meaning that it holds at Notre Dame.

To be told that you have the “Notre Dame Spirit” is to be paid a great compliment, for you are being told that you possess a fine quality of character – a character of which the subject is loyalty – loyalty to your college, to your fellow hounds and your God. Loyalty is the very essence of a Notre Dame character, for Notre Dame will not tolerate the double character – you must be 100%. The “Notre Dame Spirit” signifies that you are generous, entirely unselfish – that your Alma Mater comes before everything. This Compliment tells you, that day in and day out, regardless of how dark things look, you never grumble or crab; it implies that you never shirk your duty, for every man in this college has his job to do, and he that fails, betrays his Alma Mater.

If you are one of the many athletes, this compliment speaks for the faith in your ability, and faith that you will give your last ounce of strength for your team, regardless of the odds.

NOTRE DAME JOINS NATIONAL PREPARATORY BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

BY SEAN MARRANCA, NORTH POLE HOOPS Notre Dame is best known for its hockey program but it also has a quality university preparatory educational program, along with a full slate of high school sports teams and non-sport programs such as choral, drama and band.

Athol Murray is lead by Adam Huffman, a former University of Regina player and coach with the Saskatchewan Provincial Team.

Huffman started his coaching career while still playing at Regina, and as an Alaskan native he anticipated heading back to the States to get into his coaching career. But after starting a few clinics in Saskatchewan that garnered way more interest than he anticipated, Huffman started Doggpound Training Academy, which was the first high-performance training program in the region.

From there he was hired as the U17 Coach for Team Saskatchewan, where he focused on ensuring the top talent in the province was represented at the national level. His work at the Provincial level lead to his hiring at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, where he just completed his first year at the helm with the prep team.

The first year for the prep team included an exhibition schedule devised by Huffman against ACAC level competition in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

“The first year we pulled together eight players to come out to Notre Dame, and I was able to place every single one of the guys who graduated.

I didn’t have any D1 guys or CIS guys, but I did place guys in the ACAC who weren’t ACAC guys before we started.

We were okay from a competition standpoint, but we really needed a league going forward.”

Huffman knew that the structure of programs in Canada was heading more towards elite level basketball, and the program wanted to test itself.

“The reality is I have younger guys, my point guard and shooting guard are 15 and 16, and they’re our best players playing against college competition. I needed appropriate talent for them to be playing against, and they needed more exposure than the ACAC because they are higher than that level.”

Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, or the Hounds as they will be known by, feature two young studs that are competing well beyond their years with the help of Huffman.

Shol Ayach is a 16 year old 6’3” shooting guard who is currently playing with the U17 Team Sask. Ayack is a lockdown defender who has refused to let guards bring the ball up over the course of the National Championship, and will score in double digits purely from steals and dunks.

The Hounds even younger point guard has been turning heads at Nationals, with everyone asking who the 15 year old is running the point for the U17 squad. Adefolarin “Fo-Fo” Adetogun is a 5’11 guard with a 6’9” wingspan, while leading the team in blocks.

Huffman praises him on his communication skills as well as his 90% academic average, all while being an ambassador for the school and working to recruit players to his team.

“He’s the type of player who wakes himself up at 6 A.M. to get in the work.

The only slight I can think for him is that if he knew I was coming to wake him up in the morning, he might not wake up the rest of his team because he wants the reps for himself,” Huffman explains with a laugh.

The competitive edge will undoubtedly help the young guard as he navigates the intense competition the National Preparatory Association will bring him next season.

Athol Murray College of Notre Dame will add opportunity and diversity to the league, with reach extending from coast-to-coast.

Notre Dame joins British Columbia’s B.C. Christian, New Brunswick’s Rothesay Netherwood, Quebec’s Thetford Academy, Toronto’s St Mike’s and TBA, Ottawa’s Topflight Academy and Sault Ste Marie’s The Tech Academy Titans.

TRENT ILOTT’00 VALUES LEADERSHIP

BY MARC BUTIKOFER - DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT When Trent Ilott’00 first visited Notre Dame with his parents, he knew that one day he would attend the renowned institution on the prairies.

They were visiting his older brother, Brent’95, who was attending Notre Dame at the time. Through his brother, Trent learned what he could expect when he would arrive in Wilcox in the fall of 1996 - or so he thought. “It is a pretty overwhelming place though for a grade 9 student knowing that at the end of the day, your parents are leaving and you are embarking on an amazing adventure,” remembers Trent.

Now living in West Central Saskatchewan, near Eston, Trent is still surprised about how close the friendships he made at Notre Dame continue to be today. “I have been away from Notre Dame for almost 20 years and still have a few guys I am close with and always able to pick up right where we left off no matter the time between visits.”

Attending Notre Dame is not without its challenges. Leaving home at a young age, Trent is grateful now for the people who impacted him along the way. “I have a late birthday so was 13 when school started at ND. Being away from home is quite tough, but the staff does such a great job of becoming your family and support system that it helps with the transition.”

While at Notre Dame, Trent was active around campus. He played hockey each year and also participated in other sports including football and badminton. Like most Hounds, Trent was fortunate to play on some successful teams and forge the memories of championships won.

recognized for his leadership potential and made a House Leader in Edith Hall. Like his brother before him who had been a House Leader in Badger dorm, he relished the time he was given in this position to grow as a person. While a House Leader for those two years, his House Parent was Bob Baumuller’92 to whom he credits with impacting his life in a big way while at Notre Dame. “Bob was my houseparent for 2 years and

really helped me grow as person in my last 2 years at ND whether it be somewhere to catch up on homework, or somewhere to have coffee and bagels in the mornings Bobs door was always open and I am thankful for all those times.”

After graduation from Notre Dame, Trent went to school at the Medicine Hat College and worked for a few years before the family farm finally started calling. Trent attended the

University of Saskatchewan to complete a Diploma in Agribusiness program finishing in the spring of 2010. He then returned home to Eston and began farming with his father and his uncle Brent‘72. Now in 2017 Trent still farms with his father on a 6400 acre grain farm.

Now, nearly 17 years since Trent graduated, he has a growing family of his own. “The best thing to happen since leaving Notre Dame was meeting my wife Karla and having our daughter Jocelyn.” With baby #2 on the way in August, the list of best things to happen will only continue to grow.

Since leaving Notre Dame, Trent

has always wondered how he might be able to give back one day. “I feel like I wouldn’t be where I am today without Notre Dame,” explained Trent. “ I always knew that I wanted to start giving back someday, and even though it took a little longer than I thought, I am happy to have the chance to help out and show my appreciation for Notre Dame.”

For Trent’s family, giving back is something they have quickly engrained in their lives. Trent and Karla regularly support a variety of organizations including local fundraising activities in Eston and Elrose (Karla’s hometown), STARS or Swinging with the Stars. In 2016,

Trent and Karla began an annual pledge to the Shirley Olson Memorial Bursary and a recognition initiative for the House Leaders.

“Given that my brother and I were both House Leaders, that is something I could strive to give back to.” In November of 2016, Trent took the House Leaders and House Parents out for Christmas Dinner to recognize them for the time and effort they put into their positions. “The House Leaders do get a lot of recognition from the staff and everyone for sure, but I believe everyone deserves a nice night out.”

Trent and Karla hope to be able to make this annual activity.

“RENDER UNTO CAESAR…”

Father Murray was both a priest and an active citizen of Canada.

Throughout his multi-faceted life, he lived the biblical quote: render unto Caesar the things that belong to Caesar, and unto God, the things that belong to God. He believed that everyone should be interested and involved in civic affairs, extending into the political realm. And this passion for the contemporary sometimes brought him into conflict with his religious superiors.

When Father Murray was asked to be a guest speaker at any event – sports banquet, official openings, special celebrations – those asking him knew what to expect - a dynamic, entertaining, wide-ranging talk.

The subjects of his talks, as he explained, were always: God, Canada and Sport – but not necessarily in that order. As a young history professor who was single and had a reliable

car in the mid-1960’s, I travelled with Father Murray and experienced his magic on stage dozens of times.

At these events, Father Murray would delight his audiences with exciting stories (some true), after removing his priestly Roman collar and revealing his bright red ‘Garabaldi’ shirt. But his colourful presentations always had a foundation of profound truths.

To audiences of mixed faiths, he implored them to remember the role of the spiritual in a life well-lived, but presented his thoughts in a wildly entertaining manner.

About sports, he reminded people that sports’ main role was the development of character. To him, winning was always secondary to the process of developing young men and women into full persons.

And regarding Canada, he talked about his love for this country, how central its historical traditions were,

and how important it was to stay involved in the civic life of his beloved nation. (When he got too involved in one political action, his Bishop sent him off to New York City to tone things down.)

During the Second World War, 67 Hounds lost their lives in defence of Canada and the free world, and those deaths were vivid in his mind for the remainder of his long life.

Father Murray wanted his Hounds to be vigilant about the freedoms these young men had fought and died for.

To him, the pivotal role in life for Hounds and other thoughtful people was to ensure the proper running of a free, generous nation. He wanted no one to hide behind the idea of being too busy, not interested, or any other excuse not to care about important social and political events of the day.

ETERNAL BE THEIR MEMORY RACHELLE LYNN ADAMS’07 2017 beloved daughter of Dwight and Debbie Adams, Corning, SK and late of Prince Albert, SK passed away at the age of 28 years on Friday, April 7. Rachelle was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Joseph Adams, and two uncles, Mark Gentes and Wayne Adams. She is survived by her loving parents Dwight and Debbie Adams; brother James (Kayla) Adams and their daughter Emberleigh; brother Joshua Adams; and one sister Courtney Adams, all of Corning. Also her maternal grandparents Norman (Mary Jane) Gentes, Corning; her paternal grandmother Eleanor Adams, Stoughton, SK; as well as her greataunts, uncles and cousins and her many friends.

ALEXANDER ‘SANDY’ RICHARD THOMAS BOYLE’11 died October 21, 2016. Special friend to all, Notre Dame Hound, FX football player, fitness fanatic, healthy eating enthusiast, lover of physical labour, radical YMCA member, a west Edmonton boy has slipped all earthly bounds. Sandy suffered with the Black Dog. To know him was to love him. He is missed by his brother; Sebastion Amyotte, his dear, dear father; Joe Boyle, his mom; Wesdyne Otto, and step-father; Stan Otto, and all those who knew him.

KEVIN BUTTERFILL’06 passed away after a courageous battle on April 20, 2017 surrounded by his loved ones.

Beloved fiancée of Natasha, loving son of Barry and Heather, cherished brother of Lianne, devoted grandson of Violet and the late Kenneth and the late Olive and Sydney, and best friend of Buddy. He will be greatly missed by many family members and friends.

GORDON GRAY CURRIE’43 passed away of Gordon Currie on February 22, 2017. In recent years, He was predeceased by his darling wife of 57 years Shirley; his brother Bob and sister-in-law Evelyn; his brotherin-law Jim Meaney; his nephew Gary Doane; and great-nephew Doug

Barber. Gordon is survived by his sons Bob (Joyce), Doug (Cathy), and Jim (Safia); granddaughter Rosalyn (Tyler) Parsons; great- granddaughter Payton; his sisters Pearl Doane and Lucille Meaney; several nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Gordon was born in Semans, SK, and lived in various rural communities as the son of a Pool Elevator Agent. He attended Notre Dame College in the Pere Murray days. He was a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy in WWII. Gordon obtained his B.Ed at Mount Allision College in New Brunswick. In 1947, he returned to Regina where he was hired at Balfour Tech to teach history and promote sports. This was the start of an illustrious career in coaching and mentoring kids. His successes in coaching were many including the Balfour Redmen (both hockey and football), the Regina Red Sox, and of course, the Regina Rams. Gordon was a respected teacher and principal at Balfour and Campbell and was an innovator in the development of the Cochrane High School program.

He spent a short term in provincial politics. Of his many awards, most notable included induction to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame (1978) and the CFL Hall of Fame as a Builder (2005). He was named as a member of the Order of Canada in 1979. Gordon’s legacy will be encouraging young people to strive to be the best they can be!

REVEREND DENIS FLEMING’46 passed away at the Father Lacombe Care Centre on Friday, December 16, 2016 at the age of 91 years.

Father Fleming was ordained on May 18, 1952 at St. Anne’s Church in Blairmore, AB by Bishop Johnson.

After his ordination, he became the Assistant Pastor at St. Mary’s Parish in Calgary from 1952 – 1955, then Pastor at Holy Ghost Parish in Coleman, AB from 1955-1964 and at St. Luke’s Parish in Calgary from 1964-1975. It was in 1975 he went on a Sabbatical leave and entered studies

at the American College, Louvain and Angelicum College in Rome. When he returned from his Sabbatical he was Chaplain in the Armed Forces, and from 1977-1979 he was the Pastor at St. Patrick’s Parish in Calgary and then Pastor at St James’s Parish in Calgary from 1979-1986. Father Fleming became Pastor at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Calgary from 1986 – 1994 and retired on August 3, 1994.

ERNEST “ERNIE” FRANKS’44 passed away on August 10, 2016, at Melville Hospital. Ernie, the oldest son of August and Catherine (Currie), was born on October 13, 1922, in Scott, Saskatchewan. His childhood was spent on the farm near Leipzig and he attended school through 12th grade at the convent there. Ernie earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, at Notre Dame College in Wilcox and taught there on graduation. He then worked for a time in Regina in accounting roles. Ernie played semipro baseball after college and was recruited to play on Gull Lake’s team in exchange for the principalship of the high school there. There he met Theresa Valery, and they were married on August 15, 1950. Ernie and Theresa raised their three daughters in Gull Lake until 1964, when the Department of Education appointed him Superintendent of Wadena school unit where he was for 9 years. After all the girls finished high school in 1973, Ernie and Theresa moved to Melville where Ernie was Superintendent for the four school systems in Melville and rural area. In 1978, Ernie was appointed by the Department of Education to Assistant Regional Director of Education in Yorkton. He retired in 1980 but continued to work for the Department of Education for 3 more years as Director in neighboring school divisions.

Ernie was always an exceptional athlete and was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame as a player and builder in 2000.

He also played hockey and curled.

However, golf was his real passion

for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the golf course in Gull Lake and was very active in the clubs in Wadena and Melville. Ernie played his last game last summer, at age 92, likely scoring near his age. Ernie had great respect and admiration for Father Athol Murray, “Père Murray” as he was known, and the comradery between fellow students and teachers at Notre Dame College, which he credits with shaping his life. Ernie is predeceased by his parents August and Katie and by brothers Ivan and Gerry.

Ernie will be missed by his wife of almost 66 years, Theresa; by daughters Beverley Franks (Lee Kaslander), Valerie Franks-Sather (Les Sather), and Terri Franks (Stephen Tomney); by grandchildren Morgan Sather (Kyle Hodgson), Dylan Sather (Nadine Gray) and Megan Sather (Brett Dupont); by great grandchildren Faron and Gretchen Hodgson and Hazel Sather; by sisters Phyllis Marks and Eileen Franke; by sisters-in-law Ina Franks, Mary White and Vickie (Albert) Fontaine; by brotherin-law Allan Stodalka; and by many nieces and nephews.

FLETCHER ANGUS KIMMEL’05 was born on November 15, 1985 to Brian and Sandra Kimmel in Red Deer, Alberta. From the beginning, he had a voracious appetite and lived in the “house of continual eating.” This trait never left him. His sister Meghan, announced before his birth, that if he was a boy, she would not love him, but that was not the case. There was many a time when she came to his defense. Bob Tiegs and Tracy (Kasprick) Kimmel were introduced into his life a short three years later.

They became an important part of his upbringing. He was later joined by a brother, Brody Kimmel, and two sisters, CJ and Brianna Kimmel. The first word Fletcher learned to write was “Bob.” He wrote it everywhere. He autographed his sister’s classmates’ yearbooks and even the middle of the trunk of his mother’s car. Fletcher was schooled in the County of Newell and graduated from Duchess School.

He made many friends in his years here. He participated in many different sports, but hockey was his love.

Fletcher played his minor hockey in Bassano and Brooks with one year at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan.

Later, he played a partial year with the Medicine Hat Cubs Junior B Hockey Team. Fletcher was active in 4-H as well as with the Salers and Angus Junior Breed Associations. His love of animals was very apparent in the care that he took with his steers and heifers. Fletcher had the ability to light up the room with his smile and infectious laugh. This is a quality that is well remembered by everyone.

After high school, Fletcher worked and became a very talented welder.

He worked with structural welding but showed his expertise and passion in the other products he produced from roses to magnet display holders.

Fletcher is predeceased by his sister, CJ Kimmel; his great grandmothers, Margaret (GG) Robertson and Ruby Kimmel; his grandmothers, Helen Robertson and Janet (Nana) Kimmel; and his grandfathers Dick (Pa) Kimmel and Ken Tiegs. Fletcher is survived by his mother, Sandra Kimmel and Bob Tiegs of Brooks; his father, Brian Kimmel and Tracy Kimmel, with brother, Brody Kimmel and younger sister, Brianna Kimmel of Lloydminster, AB. He is also survived by his big sister, Meghan Hoffman and brother-in–law, Jim Hoffman and niece, MaKayla Hoffman of Effingham, Kansas, U.S.A. CATHERINE LOUISE METZ’27 of Regina, SK passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the age of 106 years to join her parents Moritz (Moy) and Louise (Lilly) Metz, sisters Collette, Lucille, Marjorie, Mary, Evelyn and Joan and special great-nephew Paul in Paradise. She leaves behind her sister Mildred Lenz; brother Maurice Metz; special nephews Greg, Rob, Tom and John and their families; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Catherine was born December 30, 1910 and grew up in Wilcox, SK. She was a member of the first graduating class of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame.

Catherine found her passion as a teacher, a job she proudly held for forty-five years. She started her career at the Hunt Rural School and later in her career she moved to Regina to teach for Regina Catholic Schools (Sacred Heart, Holy Rosary and then finally St. Joseph school). After her retirement from teaching, Catherine

travelled the world visiting all seven continents in her many travels and was always ready to share her favorite stories. Catherine has long been the Metz family historian, keeping up the contacts of a family spread across North America.

WILLIAM J. “BILL” MOONEY’52 passed away on August 11, 2016.

Throughout Bill’s life, and his best partner Lois’52, maintained a steadfast believe in Athol Murray’s core principles that every life is insignificant until you yourself make it great, everyone is done by people and everyone has a responsibility to serve community and society. Bill had an illustrious career in Oil and Gas with Cities Service, Centipede Energy and Millipede Energy.

Throughout his career, he was front and centre during some of the most pivotal moments in the evolution of the Alberta energy sector, serving as a valued advisor to provincial and federal government leaders on a range of matters and policy accords.

Bill was credited with facilitating the agreements between three energy companies (Imperial, Cities Service and Gulf) and the Governments of Alberta, Canada and Ontario to ensure effective collaboration on what was then known as the “Syncrude Project.”

Bill’s commitments to the industry included membership in numerous professional organizations as well as service as chairman of the Board of Governors for the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame and Chairman of the Saskatchewan Petroleum Industry Hall of Fame. He was vice- chairman of both the Alberta Environmental Research Trust and the Alberta Special Waste Management Corporation. Bill is a Member of the Saskatchewan and Canadian Petroleum Halls of Fame.

He holds the Notre Dame Medal of Honour, the Alberta Centennial Medal and the A.O.E Alberta Order of Excellence. He has been a member of the Board of Regents and Board of Governors for his beloved Athol Murray’s Notre Dame and has raised funds and organized events for a wide range of charitable organizations in Alberta. LEO RICHARD MULHALL’53 died peacefully on September 17, 2016 at the age of 88 years.

Leo was born in Gull Lake, SK to Ethel (Doyle) and Richard Mulhall along with three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jeannette (Haughey) Mulhall; eight children: Vincent, Michael, Karen (Keith) McIlmoyl, Daniel (Cindy), Diane (Dave) Blocka, Linda (Christopher) Lyons, Colleen and Timothy; 16 grandchildren: Jeanie, David, Tanner, Kelsey, Adam, Logan, Sarah, Stephanie, Jordan, Danielle, Kevin, Jennifer, Leo, Carter, Michael, and Andrew; along with 17 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Rose Mulhall; Lorraine Mulhall and Elizabeth Haughey and brother-in-law Desmond (Lauretta) Haughey. He was predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Richard Mulhall; his sister and brotherin-law, Mary and Jerry Bernard; his brother Gerald and sister-in-law Hazel Mulhall; brother Joseph Mulhall; brother John “Jack” Mulhall; motherin-law Marguerite Haughey and brother-in-law Jerome Haughey. Leo dedicated his life to family, church, education and community. Already of strong faith, dad started his journey as an educator when he was 16 years old. Leo attended Notre Dame College in Wilcox, SK from 1944-1953 where he met his wife Jeannette.

While studying at Notre Dame, he played hockey for the Notre Dame Hounds for 9 years and continued to mentor youth in future years on the importance of a healthy body, healthy mind. While attending Notre Dame, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Ottawa. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Education

from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, NS. Leo taught in various communities in Alberta and Saskatchewan before settling in Prince Albert in 1957. Dad was one of a group of teachers who were instrumental in starting and building an all-boys school in the basement of the Catholic Cathedral in Prince Albert, which would later become St. Mary High School. Leo later moved to teaching at St. Joseph’s School and then became Principal of Turgeon and St. Joseph Schools. He finished his career teaching at St. Mary High School, retiring as an educator in 1988 after 34 years. Dad lived a Christian life, devoting himself to his family, ministries within his church and providing volunteer services in several capacities within the community. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed his daily walks, woodworking projects and daily puttering around the yard and house.

BERNARD JOSEPH SAUCIER’58 passed away on March 11th, 2017 at the age of 80 years surrounded by his family, after a short and brave battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

Loving husband for 46 years of Nicole (née Crégheur), devoted father of Michelle (Bertrand Thériault) and Pierre (Julie Morris) and proud grandfather of Catherine & David Thériault and Adrien & Justin Saucier. He is also survived by his brothers Louis of Calgary, Joseph of Saskatoon, Henri of Courtney, BC and by many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents Alphonse Saucier and Yvonne Saucier (née Schmidt) and by his brother Edouard.

Bernard was born in Saskatoon, SK on July 3rd, 1936. He was a graduate of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, SK and of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish,

NS. A natural athlete and an avid sportsman he was a member of many baseball, hockey and football teams in his youth; later on in life he loved to be active in the great outdoors. He enjoyed exploring new destinations and travelled extensively in Europe and Canada always using his trusted road maps. During his long career as a high school teacher in Saskatchewan, in Germany (Soest and Lahr) and in Ottawa he touched many lives. During his retirement, he dedicated himself to helping others and will be remembered by many as a caring, generous and compassionate friend.

KENN TOWNSEND’57 of Edmonton passed away peacefully on September 5, 2016, with his family by his side at the age of 79 years. Kenn will be dearly missed by his wife of 52 years, Bernice; his children, Leanne, Craig (Brenda), Rob, Niki (Chris) and Danah (Jason); thirteen grandchildren; four sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents, Vera and Eric; and two brothers.

SHIRLEY WOODARD long time loyal Notre Dame “mom” to four sons, three of whom were Hounds (Terry, Brad and Randy) and beloved wife of our dear alum Jessie Woodard, passed from this earthly life on Sunday, February 12, 2017.

Shirley was an exceptional woman and was a more than exceptional supporter of Notre Dame, especially with the students, staff and alumni.

She and Jessie were great hosts to many a Hound team who travelled to Winnipeg and were hosted by the Woodard family. They also worked ND’s summer hockey school and were the houseparents to the “little muckers” during their week long stint in the dorms during those hockey schools.
