ACCA Certified Accounting Technician Qualifying as an ACCA Accounting Technician ensures that candidates are technically competent in all aspects of accounts support, testing their theoretical knowledge through a set of stringent examinations, and their ability to apply knowledge by assessing their practical experience.

COURSE CONTENT Year One • Recording Financial Transactions (FA1) • Management Information (MA1) • Maintaining Financial Records (FA2) • Maintaining Costs and Finance (MA2) • Accountant in Business (FAB) Examinations in all five year one subjects will take place in June 2013.

Year Two • Management Accounting (FMA) • Financial Accounting (FFA) • Foundations in Taxation (FTX) • Foundations in Audit (FAU) Examinations for Management Accounting and Financial Accounting will take place in December 2013. Examinations for Foundations in Taxation and Foundations in Audit will take place in June 2014. www.ait.ie

Students must also complete Foundations in Professionalism, which is an online based module provided by ACCA. Students may complete this at any time during their studies, and can only achieve the overall award once this is completed.

PRACTICAL WORK EXPERIENCE Students must complete one year’s relevant practical experience in any accounting environment to show they can use their knowledge from the exams in the workplace. Experience can be completed before, at the same time or after taking exams.

EMBEDDED AWARDS You will be awarded the Introductory Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting when you have completed exams FA1 and MA1; the Intermediate Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting when you have completed exams FA2 and MA2; and the Diploma in Accounting and Business when you have completed exams FAB, FMA and FFA. This is a great way to demonstrate to employers your level of knowledge and capabilities and it motivates you to keep studying. Please note you will receive these awards only when you have also completed Foundations in Professionalism.

REGISTRATION WITH ACCA It is the responsibility of all students to register independently with the ACCA. Students should also apply directly to the ACCA for any exemptions they may be entitled to. Students should register as a student on the Foundations in Accountancy.

You will be given exemption from the first three exams of the ACCA Qualification (F1, F2 and F3) and your one year’s practical experience can count towards the three years of practical experience needed for the ACCA Qualification.

Uniquely to AIT, you gain advanced entry to our BA (Hons) in Accounting (Level 8), enabling you to acquire a Level 8 Honours Degree in 3 further years which gives you exemptions from ACCA fundamental examinations.

GRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES You could work in the following types of roles: • an accounting role in an small to medium-sized organisation • a financial reporting, financial support or supervisory role in a larger organisation • a financial supervisory or management role in accounts payables and/or receivables, or a financial role in fixed-asset accounting or in a financial shared service centre • an accounting technician role in a commercial organisation.

The principal aim of this course is to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to provide competent support to business managers in all aspects of financial sector The Diploma in Accounting and Business will also provide a wide range of career opportunities and academic progression. This course provides an excellent opportunity to those with non-accounting qualifications, to become familiar with the business and accounting terminology and environment assisting them to interpret data and results and to formulate business decisions.

Typical attendees are Engineers, Science graduates, humanities graduates, social care, legal graduates, those who have managed and operated at a managerial level.

Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Accounting NFQ Level 8 (open to ACCA/IATI Certified Accounting Technician Graduates) ACCOUNTANCY

Successful completion of this degree leads to significant exemptions from the professional accounting examinations for the ACCA, CIMA and CPA. AIM OF COURSE This honours Bachelor degree in accounting will provide you with an in-depth knowledge of the fundamental theories, concepts, principles and practices essential for a rewarding career in professional accountancy. You will acquire expertise in the areas of accountancy, finance, management, information technology and general business.

You will develop a critical understanding of the fundamental and advanced concepts, principles, methods and techniques of accounting, auditing and regulation. Your skills of analysis, interpretation and judgement will be enhanced, as will your capacity to apply a conceptual understanding to practical business decision-making situations, to problem solving and to the provision of effective information for financial and management accounting purposes. Concepts and applications of law in modern business practice are also a key element of this curriculum, as is the ethical underpinnings of the accounting profession.

Fundamentals of economics, business mathematics and financial theory form a key part of the modules in finance.

You will be taught about the nature, significance and inter-relationship of economic and financial environments.

The practice of scientific analysis and financial decision-making techniques is a central component of the programme.

You will also become familiar with the mechanisms of the financial system and the evaluative methods involved, as well as developing an understanding of the core areas of business taxation.

Organisational and strategic management are critical areas of knowledge for any business manager. You will learn how to apply accepted theories to modern business management situations. The development of effective communication skills forms an essential part of the course, as does the study of fundamentals and principles of business law.

It is important that you understand the theoretical concepts and methodology of information technology, systems analysis, and design and project management. You will gain a practical knowledge of software packages and IT resources commonly used by accounting and finance professionals. The growing area of e-business is also covered in the programme.

At a general level, the degree will give you the knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes necessary for a successful career in today’s challenging business environment. You will learn how commercial and industrial organisations function, the environmental factors that affect an organisation and the contribution of the accounting/finance professional to an organisation’s success.

As a Level 8 graduate you will be eligible (subject to examination results) to apply for the Master of Arts in Accounting programme which is delivered over one full year at AIT. Alternatively, you may choose to study towards membership of one of the professional accountancy bodies.

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION Graduates of this programme are deemed eligible by the Teaching Council to apply for a Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme at Irish universities, recognised to teach the subject Accounting.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES As a graduate, you are eligible for employment at a high level in the areas of financial and management accountancy, as well as in general business.
