Throughout this journey, I have come to terms with the notion of (de)attachment with the familiar and have pushed myself to see things from different places and be constantly moved by curiosity.

I now realise I am drawn to understanding origins and the human condition. I have also grown an appreciation towards people who especially hold a spark in their eyes as they speak and move towards the matters that attract their heart.

I have found joy in what is said in prose or rhythms, and am delighted to discover the visual mysteries of what is not said.

I seek to set path with those who question and create and am set to explore every ounce of creative possibilities.

I stumbled upon this online publication by accident in 2009 during the first month it was established. Being curious in exploring my writing and creative possibilities, I joined the team as a writer and then managing editor and have experimented in making our creative scene noticable on both a local and international level. Four years of work have proudly made Whiteboard Journal what it is today.

“Through my research process and the latest exhibition, I understood our history is written by winners. Those who lose do not have a voice or a place in history. History will always be presented by those supporting the power of those who reign. From this I concluded that history is not singular, there are little parts of history of my own history or the history of my community and the rest.”

The Jakarta-based photographer dynamic body of work has earned her spreads displayed in magazines such as Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, & Esquire. Speaking to her, we learned that she has dabbled in multiple art disciplines prior to photography, and she constantly motivates herself to learn more. This constant search for knowledge is present in her photographs, which becomes more and more dynamic as she goes along.

To those in the art world, FX Harsono needs no introduction, as a art activist, he has spent his whole life creatively narrating his life and the culture around him through various art mediums. His sense of inquisitiveness has led him to constantly trace back history and extend a voice towards the oppressed. Whiteboard Journal had a chance to talk to FX Harsono at Dia. Lo.Gue about the exploration of his own identity and what he expects from younger generation of artists.

“I think being a creative you tend to reflect yourself in your work, and I like my models to be what I perceive strong women are like. Many people say that being a female photographer, I bring something different to the table that male photographers do not. Although my client’s opinion can’t be the same, I’d like to believe that I get hired because people like the images I make.”

Country of The Past - Cambodia WRITER AND PHOTOGRAPHER ATHINA IBRAHIM

Any maxim on traveling would repeatedly confirm the thought that traveling is meant to be a transformative process – a journey to open minds, shift paradigms and become a means to make one culturally knowledgeable. As travel can only affect those who truly look for change, so it goes, that my trip to Cambodia was undeniably a transformative one, leaving me, though, with a few uncomfortable realization.

Cambodia struck a rather strange chord in me, unlike its neighboring countries, Thailand or Vietnam that frequently identifies itself with the word “charm” – immediately recognized for its hospitality, local food, or original remains of architecture. Cambodia took awhile for me to pinpoint. “I don’t know how to identify Cambodia – other than Angkor Wat I really don’t know what I would be here for,” mentioned a fellow hostel roommate, an Argentinean, who had his fair share of traveling around Southeast Asia.

Unlike its neighbors, Cambodia’s economic development has been very slow. Repeatedly, I was told about Cambodia’s brutal upheaval during the Khmer Rouge Regime. A four-year mass genocide in the year 1975, governed by a hard-line communist leader, Pol Pot in his appalling quest to wipe the country clean from its intellectuals and minorities.

As Shakespeare wrote, “What’s past is prologue”, years after, Cambodia still suffered the remains of the grueling civil war. Year Zero, was the aftermath of the brutal dictatorship, where cities were emptied, schools and factories closed, leaving the Cambodian people with starvation and struggle to return what has

been lost.

The subsequent brutality also made it difficult to piece together the disparate identity and culture of Cambodia. Hunting down a friend’s request for a Cambodian record of the legendary singer Mao Sareth proved to be a tricky task. Piracy, although common in Southeast Asia, seem to be the only option to find a glimpse of the local music scene. “It’s difficult to find original records in Cambodia nowadays, most of them were wiped together with the artists during the Khmer Rouge” a middle-age storeowner said, when I asked of the places to find original records – confirming to me the troubles of obtaining reproduced collection of the past.

Today, the much stable political situation in Cambodia has attracted more tourists than ever before, and as if designed to welcome these tourists (as was I), Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are two of the main cities where preservation of the cities are apparent. Foreign aid from France, China, and Korea has abundantly contributed to the improved architectural structure. Psar Thmei, commonly referred as the Central Market, built with its striking art-deco dome in 1937, now stands brighter and felt slightly rigid since its recent renovation in 2011. Both the Phnom Penh and Siem Reap international Airport had also undergone a million dollar improvement program in the last years to acquire the modern and accessible amenities in presents today.

from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, I couldn’t help but notice the cultural bubble the numerous tourists and I were guided into, we were fed into the beauty of Angkor and the city’s constructed markets and hotels. But as I held in my hand Debbie Milman’s book ‘How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer’, peering into the lives of design icons and their modern ideologies, taking a glimpse over the bus window, I was struck by the ironic realities Cambodia faces today, here was a country gaining great momentum from the flocking tourists but as seen around the actual landscapes of the connecting cities is view of a country still shadowed by suffering, degradation, and hea ily relying on foreign aid to move forward.

Cambodia is a country that has attracted people less for what it stands now, not for the refurbished infrastructure (or the lack of it), but its complex layered past. One that leaves people haunted over its harrowing political turmoil and one that offers an equally romanticized vision as once a sacred kingdom marked Cambodia at its best.

Nevertheless, it was strange to experience Cambodia over its relatively crude constructions. In fact, it seems slightly out of place. The Killing Field for instance, appeared less miserable and ordinary by first impression, if it wasn’t for the audio-guide that set the mood of the tour, equipping us listeners with testimonials from the Khmer Rouge survivors and musical references that became background to the horrific murders.

In recent years, we have heard Indonesia’s creative scene giving birth to more galleries, biennales, and fairs. There is also an exciting emergence of communities and artists. Many explore their interest in art by engaging in fields such as film, photog- raphy or even music and design.

Yet this overwhelming growth still raises questions concerning Indonesia’s pro- longed creative repression. It was only after the reformation era (post 1998) that we began to explore our creative potentials. In the past, limited art spaces were an un- derlying issue. Today, amid this massive economic boom, pursuing a creative path is still met with doubts. The scene is now divided into the art and the industry, the juggle between creative freedom and commercial work. “The cultivation of creativity always encounters factors such as client’s wants and target markets,” explains curator Mitha Budhyarto in her curatorial essay in the exhibition “EXI(S)T” that aims to incubate local artistic talents with a background in the industry hosted by a Jakarta-based contemporary art space Dia.Lo.Gue.

Every emerging art form is a social commentary that is independent from each other. No absolute standardization exists – opening loopholes of opportunities for art practice or entrepreneurial forces. Art has always been rooted in the Indonesian culture. We are a melting pot of cul- tures and history – from the influences of religion to cultural colonization.

Bali still preserves its traditional arts and crafts, while Bandung is gradually gaining the recognition it deserves for its D.I.Y. culture and craftsmanship and Yogyakarta for its fine arts and independent art institutions.

On a global map, Jakarta is a hidden gem. The strong creative energy and dynamic space of the city opens plenty of room for innovation. There is a balance acquired by the young people between a strong local identity and international relevancy. With the thriving economy, what is needed at this point is a narrative to address this organic growth.

As a creative media, Whiteboard Journal has been documenting the movement of Indonesia’s cultural figures and sub-cultures. We have been acting as a platform to promote potential artists, academics, and practitioners on various levels.

Ahmad Djuhara (Architect/Urban Planner) Traditional market has proven to be a great economic support although its presence nested amid the growing city developments has established a few problems of being a source of traffic, pollution, and promotes an uncomfortable environment for operations. Representing the process of urban planning, Ahmad Djuhara will explain how proper urban planning can help optimize space for the traditional

market. Further stimulating a discussion on how an optimal design and outlook can be achieved without the market loosing its actual identity/characteristics.

My involvement at our inaugural event of TedxJakSel was to be in charge of the branding and merchandising of the whole event. It includes communicating the branding direction of promotional tools as the website, merchandises, and other branding elements. I think my interest for documentation was firstly influenced by my mother’s habit of documentating the family’s development since we were born till this date. Image Title: Repetition of Childhood Memory With our curiosity and brooding sleepy eyes over an early Saturday morning, we began a whirling intense week workshop on the interpreting the visual language. Over much anticipation, constant inquiries, and grueling deadlines of assignments, our group of five clueless beings of different disciplines was taken out of our daily routine to be challenged on a personal and professional level.

This book is a manifestation of what we never thought could happen within a tight frame of seven days. We created a printed documentation marking our understanding of what Tulisan is and what it represented to us.

Starting from word associations to delivering ideas that was then translated into digital or tactile work of art visible in this book.

This project started from a simple instruction to assses an idea but evolved into a process of reevaluating and breaking down the unconscious and mandatory instruction dictating our day-to-day performance.

Instructions that may work on instincts and personal experience, but the same quiet instruction that stop us from pushing against what we are truly capable of seeing and doing.

What resulted in this book are not mere visual interpretations but a self-realization that awakened the lurking creatives within us all.

IT ALL STARTS FROM THE HOME

From a relatively young age, Nadine Zamira has been exposed to the great outdoors. The value of appreciating nature was quickly instilled to her family through her experiences of hiking, bird watching, to urban farming. These constant interactions were pivotal in her life and have since molded her sensitivity to be cautious to the environment.

“It is a way of life,” she often exclaims. Today, foreseeing the lack of awareness towards environmental conservation in Indonesia, Nadine has developed her start-up as both her cause and personal pursuit for living. She has built a Public Relations agency specializing in environmental communication she names LeafPlus – proudly marking the agency to be the first of its kind locally.

“You have to start with your closest surroundings. You have to be a testament to change by being consistent in what you believe in” – Nadine Zamira Change is a difficult quest. When you have built a life surrounded by daily comforts, it is hard to bring yourself down and plunge back into what is considered bare necessity. The participation of change is often faced with resistance to the unfamiliar and the tremor of fear as it tempers with your consciousness – often creating a resonance of doubt to your beliefs. Change comes with a price. A price Nadine Zamira courageously convince will be for the better. She once posted in her instragram account, the wisdom of Socrates, “The secret of change is to focus your energy, not fighting the old, but on building the new.” An adage she has genuinely strived for in advocating for the environment.

“I was only fulfilling my destiny.” She once mentioned to me, when I first asked of her motivation to pursue this field.

REGAINING BALANCE My first encounter with Nadine happened three years ago when we were first introduced by a former co-worker. From our initial meetings to the experience of traveling to a global lecture series in Ubud, I had developed an understanding that balance was a great priority for her. She is bold, smart, and equally masters an eye for anything aesthetic pleasing. Her love for beauty and observing nature evolved into her appreciation towards arts and design. Her exquisite charm and slender figure can easily mistake her for a model, but as the popular saying goes, Nadine carries both “beauty and brain” with much admiration.

A good challenge for both the mind and body is something she does not back down to. Other than once being the former contestant of Miss Earth, becoming guest speakers in sem-

inars or writing multiple essays on her cause, she has been involved in activities which give her an adrenaline kick, she joined the Amazing Asia Race with her closest friend and have previously been an active member of a crossfit gym. Both activities that require not only a mental drive but also a strong physique.

CHANGING BEHAVIOURS Breaking old habits is a difficult task for anybody, especially, when the habits involve is for a greater cause. Habits may be changed psychologically, but to be consistent requires the right emotional trigger. I asked Nadine, in offering a service that promotes people to reevaluate their behaviors, what her trigger would be: “One of the most effective ways is really being exposed to nature, social problems, and the needs of people that are less fortunate. I know it sounds simple, but ironically a lot of people do not go out of their bubble – they stay in their comfort and convenience and they do not think they feel they have any other responsibilities beyond that.”

SUSTAINABILITY AND HUMAN INTEREST “Sustainability itself is a concept to protect human interest, we propose this balance and equilibrium, but the main agenda is to protect humans so we can still thrive.”

While implementing a thoughtful living has been ingrained in her, getting people on the same wagon proves to be a challenge. Nadine mentions time and again, the problem in an urban setting is the act of consuming without thinking. Although there is an apparent and healthier shift to promote a slow and less wasteful living, many are still dubious on what Sustainability is for their own self.

Sustainability is a rational concept, to sustain is to think of longevity. As people strive on short-term thinking, a sustainable life requires sensibility in thinking for a long and productive life. With this harmonious desire for balance of human and nature, Nadine shares her own interpretation:

BECOMING A ROLE MODEL Meanwhile in terms of influencing her team members and clients, she instill a “client-in-training” concept, where she digs deep to ask the core questions of why they feel obliged to associate with these issue and why their involvement is important.

“The overreaching value for Sustainability for me is respect. Respecting others, respecting living beings in the planet by creating a balance. The overall mission of Sustainability and with I am trying to do is achieve happiness.

Rest assured, whatever you are doing is not compromising the well-being of other people in the planet.”

The key very much lies in focusing on being a role model, “I do what I do because I believe in something so much, and I focus on that. I really believe it [and] I do hope to influence or inspire them.” As a leader, she has discovered realization of becoming a leader who manages and nurtures at equal measures. “The hardest things I see with employees, I think they are in conflict with themselves as well, because they want to achieve something else for them-

In order to achieve that ideal happiness, “you need to create your own reality,” Nadine mentions. She has chosen to contribute to something bigger than her own self by ploughing consistently with care. As history has proven that change takes on the side of courageous, Nadine Zamira thrive on her belief with a fundamental spirit, “I want to prove I can do this.”

The book titled She Inks: A Tale About Melissa Sunjaya (TBC) follows the artistic journey of artist, creative director, and founder of brand TULISAN, Melissa Sunjaya.

This book serves as an introduction into the life and mind of Melissa Sunjaya as an artist learning her craft in an art program in London, studying in the Art Centre College of Design, Switzerland, establishing her design consultancy in Los Angeles prior to her return to Jakarta where she took the courage to establish the brand Tulisan as an extension to her creative endeavors.
