Hello, and welcome to the sunny Skuna for today's clash between the Colls and Macclesfield!
I would like to wish a warm welcome to all of our visitors today.
Truthfully, this is a league fixture that not many of us would ever have envisioned becoming a reality. My own personal previous visit to the Moss Rose, prior to this season, was a fantastic League Two clash against Exeter in 2020, whilst the Colls were competing in our maiden NPL outing. It sadly finished 3-2 to the Grecians, but thanks to some good friends in the Silk capital, today's visitors have always been a club high in my own estimations.
My own personal experiences aside, today's game has only gained an added connection in the hearts of us Colls fans with the very recent news of the appointment of a certain Michael Clegg as Silkmen manager.
It goes without saying in truth, Cleggy is the man who gave this club some of our greatest memories and took us to where we are now. We are all delighted to see him gain such a fantastic opportunity within football, and he has truly deserved it. Look after him, Macc fans, you've got a good one.
It must be said though, whilst Macclesfield are coming into today on a high, we're certainly building somewhat of a bit of momentum here at the Skuna ourselves.
All season, we've been able to see what this team has been capable of, but over recent weeks things have looked to finally begin to click into place. Our last few matches have been our most defensively mature of the campaign, with leaders beginning to emerge and grow in confidence across the back-line, whilst we're starting to back that up with our forwards getting their rewards at the other end of the pitch.
Today is going to be a tough test for sure, but it is certainly going to be a fascinating one.
Prior to last week's postponed trip to Bamber Bridge, we welcomed Colls academy player Bobby Fenlon to the first team squad following an exciting campaign in the North West Youth Academy and some successful training sessions within the first team. It's always a proud moment to see local lads breaking through, the hard work pays off. Congratulations, Bobby!
I hope all of our visitors enjoy their visit to our humble abode today. It may not be the glamourous surroundings you are all used to, but I just hope we give you a friendly welcome and good day out nonetheless.
Thank you all for coming today, it is much appreciated by us all!
Keep the faith, and up the Colls!
- RobAtherton Collieries were denied a shock win at the Neuven Stadium after two late Radcliffe goals meant it was honours even at 2-2.
Sidi Fofana and Nathan Caine both struck for the Colls while Jordan Hulme and Brad Jackson netted for the Boro.
Neither team managed to gain early control, bar an early chance for the Colls as Jordan Scanlon fizzed a low ball into the area which was deflected towards Mateusz Hewelt’s goal but kept out by the Radcliffe man.
Despite Radcliffe gradually gaining the upper hand it was the Colls who scored first. A Luke Thompson free kick was fired low into the area, a deflection taking the ball into the control of Sidi Fofana who took a touch before spinning the ball into the top right corner. A lead for Colls with just over 20 minutes on the clock.
Little was made of Radcliffe’s pressure before a ball smashed across the right hand side of the area was met by Jordan Hulme who couldn’t keep his effort on target as it flew just wide of Tom Donaghy’s far post.
As half time came and went, some astute Colls defending kept the lead intact with only one true chance for the Boro as a quick Luca Navarro jumped a sloppy Colls pass only to see his shot sail high and wide of Donaghy’s upright.
A continuation of Radcliffe pressure pulled their defence line higher and Colls capitalised. Captain Lewis Mansell made his way down the right hand side before sliding a perfect ball into the path of an on-rushing Nathan Caine who stroked the ball into the corner to double our lead with six to play.
This second awakened Radcliffe as little over three minutes later a Nicky Adams corner was turned home by Hulme who managed to get free of his marker a deftly place the ball past Donaghy in the Colls goal.
The referee signaled for eight minutes of added time but it would be in the 113th minute when a long floated ball would be flicked on by substitute Ewan Bange for Brad Jackson to hammer home a thunderous volley into the roof of the net, denying a monumental upset with the final kick.

Atherton Collieries take on Macclesfield at the Skuna Stadium on Saturday, and your support will be vital as we look to go toe-to-toe with one of non-league footballs big guns.
Former EFL outfit Macclesfield have been resurgent over recent years, with chairman Robbie Savage on the hunt for a third consecutive promotion since his takeover alongside Rob Smethurst in 2020. The Town currently sit fifth in the Northern Premier League, and are coming off the back of three consecutive victories in the league against Bamber Bridge and play-off rivals Guiseley & Ilkeston.
Macclesfield come into Saturday's game on the back of appointing legendary former Colls manager Michael Clegg, who gained three promotions in five years at the Skuna Stadium alongside a myriad of cup wins and runs across a historic 300game spell.
We of course look forward to going head-to-head with a great friend of the club once more.
Meanwhile, the Colls are looking to build upon a strong point against league leaders Radcliffe, goals from Sidi Fofana and Nathan Caine nearly caused a monumental upset at the Neuven Stadium. The recent performances from David Chadwick’s men have seen the Colls collect 4 points from our last three fixtures, a galvanised effort as we look to secure our Northern Premier League status for another year.
Macclesfield’s top goal scorer this season has been Alex Curran, the former Stockport and Curzon Ashton man is a product of the Blackburn Rovers academy and has scored 21 goals in all competitions.

Atherton Collieries Football Club was formed in 1916, by miners from the six pits which were operative in the old urban district of the town. The club was created as a means of providing welfare for those at home during the war effort. When the pits were nationalised, the football club was gifted to the people of the town.
They have played at Alder House since their formation, making the ground one of the oldest in the division. You gain a sense of the history when you walk around the facility which keeps its identity and warmth despite being renovated gradually over the past few years.
Colls were founding members of the North West Counties Football League in 1982 and remained there until 2017, when earned promotion to the Northern Premier League for the first time in the club’s history. There have been many memorable moments from the club’s time in the NWCFL, and the club are well known around the region as a result.
During the 2006/07 season, Collieries had a future international footballer in their ranks with a young Anthony Pilkington spearheading the Colls attack. Despite being the youngest member of the squad, Pilkington found himself grabbing all the headlines when they beat league leaders FC United of Manchester 3-0 at Gigg Lane. He grabbed himself a hat-trick during this match and soon found himself being transferred straight to the Football League with a move to Stockport County. From there he went on to move to Huddersfield Town and Norwich City in the Premier League before being called up to the Republic of Ireland’s international squad.
Prior to this, Collieries had been known in the local area to produce professional footballers. The famous 1923 FA Cup Final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United featured two former Colls players as Billy Butler and Bob Haworth helped the Wanderers bring the FA Cup back to Bolton for the first time in their history.
Links between Bolton Wanderers and Atherton Collieries continue to this very day with the two clubs playing each other in an annual pre-season friendly. Recent clashes have seen over 1,500 walk
through the Alder Street turnstiles. Matches like this have helped propel Collieries into the limelight in recent seasons and fans of various professional football clubs now consider Colls to be their second club.
Michael Clegg was appointed first team manager in August 2014 and immediately began assembling a young and local side. The club went on to win the NWCFL Division One title and the Bolton Hospital Cup in his first season, as well as reaching the final of the League Cup Final and the Division One Cup Final. Success did not stop there as in his second campaign the Colls went one better and won the League Cup, beating the league champions Colne 5-1 at Fleetwood Town’s Highbury Stadium, whilst finishing fourth on the club’s return to the North West Counties Premier Division.
The 2016/17 campaign was a momentous one, as in their centenary year they clinched the NWCFL Premier Division title and reached the last 16 of the FA Vase backed by a large and ever growing local fan base. Following their promotion, the Colls defied all odds to proudly win the 2017/18 NPL Challenge Cup within their debut season at Step 4, and went a step beyond by winning the league title to reach the Northern Premier Division in the following campaign.
The club continued to settle to life amongst the Northern Premier League’s top rank under the guidance of club icon Brad Cooke, who maintained the club’s survival at the highest level in both the town & club’s history over a four year stint, with a defensive record that ranked amongst the league’s best combined with the club’s first serious forays towards winning the Lancashire Trophy, reaching their first final in 2023 following consecutive semifinal outings in 2022 & 2020.
Following the appointment of David Chadwick going into the 2023-24 season, the Black & Whites remain ambitious to further cement their status within the Northern Premier League hierarchy, with a nucleus of exciting, young & high-potential footballers in the first team squad, and tireless efforts away from the pitch to continually improve the Skuna Stadium facilities, powered by a strong community spirit within their ever-growing fanbase.
Some language used to target opposition players or make fun of team mates can affect the mental health of LGBT+ people and make them and their friends feel put down.
Saying someone is ‘gay’, ‘queer’, a ‘faggot’ (or any other anti-LGBT+ term) just because they do something wrong on a football pitch or are having a bad game is offensive and disrespectful to LGBT+ people, even if it doesn’t target them individually.
Using gender as a way to abuse people is also wrong. Saying men are ‘playing like girls’ or ‘like women’ not only offends women and girls, but can also make LGBT+ people feel uncomfortable too. Calling women and girls who are involved in football ‘lesbians’ or ‘men’ as a term of abuse is stereotyping and offensive.
If you feel safe, always challenge language or behaviour that puts LGBT+ people down. Remember, saying nothing only allows prejudice and discrimination to get worse.
Targeting people because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity is against the law and against the Rules of the Game. You can report any anti-LGBT+ behaviour in grassroots football via your County FA or via Kick It Out by:

Atherton Collieries found themselves embroiled in a second successive seven-goal thriller, but this time triumphed 4-3 to take a vital three points against Morpeth Town.
Enock Lusiama, Lewis Thompson, Jordan Scanlon and Lewis Mansell all struck for the Colls, whilst Nic Bollado, Sam Hodgson and Fenton John did their best to secure an unlikely comeback for the visitors.
The home side were in the ascendancy for much of the first forty-five, with Mansell twice going close from early corners. But it would be strike partner Lusiama who opened the scoring, showing great composure after an equally intelligent pass from Scanlon.
Not to be kept out of the game though, Mansell would prove the provider of the hosts’ second, setting up Lewis Thompson for his first goal in Colls’ colours. And if Scanlon’s earlier assist had been stylish, his goal to make it 3-0 was sublime, as the midfielder’s longrange effort nestled beautifully in the top-right corner.
The only minor blemish on a fantastic first-half for David Chadwick’s men was Bollado’s stoppage-time goal, which the Morpeth striker eventually poked home following a set-piece.A three-goal cushion would be temporarily restored as home skipper Mansell netted from the spot, having shown considerable grit to earn the penalty.
But just as those at the Skuna Stadium may have considered chalking the game up as a home win, Hodgson and then John found the net to set up a tense ending to the game.

Macclesfield Football Club rose from the ashes of its predecessor, Macclesfield Town F.C., which faced liquidation in September 2020 due to substantial debts leading to its expulsion from the National League. In a bid to resurrect professional football in Macclesfield, Robert Smethurst, owner of Stockport Town, acquired the club's assets, including the Moss Rose stadium, laying the groundwork for the establishment of Macclesfield F.C. This initiative garnered support from influential figures like former professional footballer Robbie Savage, who joined the club's board alongside manager Danny Whitaker.
The club embarked on its inaugural competitive season in August 2021, competing in the North West Counties Premier Division. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey characterized by notable achievements, including two successive promotions, propelling Macclesfield F.C. to its current participation in the Northern Premier League. Throughout its evolution, the club has remained committed to community engagement, offering free tickets to youth through partnerships and venturing into competitions like the FA Vase for the first time during the 2021-22 season.
The 2021-22 season stood as a pivotal moment for Macclesfield F.C., witnessing significant milestones such as a triumphant debut match against Burscough. Noteworthy performances, including record-breaking attendance and a BBC Sport documentary chronicling the club's resurgence, underscored its upward trajectory. Despite initial setbacks, the team's resilience became evident with a remarkable streak of ten consecutive victories, culminating in the clinching of the North West Counties Premier Division title and promotion.
The subsequent season, 2022-23, saw managerial changes as David McNabb took over from Danny Whitaker before midfielder Neil Danns assumed the interim managerial role. The team's impressive form persisted, resulting in consecutive promotions as they secured the championship.
As the 2023-24 season unfolded, Macclesfield encountered further transitions, including managerial shifts and player movements. Notable signings and departures reshaped the squad dynamics, with departures like record goal-scorer James Berry and the return of John Rooney, brother of Wayne Rooney, adding intrigue. The season brought a blend of triumphs in cup competitions alongside challenges in league fixtures, culminating in the dismissal of head coach Mark Duffy.
Despite adversities, Macclesfield F.C. demonstrated resilience, securing notable victories like the triumph against Dorking Wanderers in the FA Trophy. The managerial baton passed once more, with Alex Bruce assuming leadership before eventually handing over the reins to Michael Clegg.
In essence, Macclesfield Football Club's journey epitomizes resilience and determination. From its inception as a phoenix club to its remarkable accomplishments on the field, the club persists in navigating the ebbs and flows of English football with unwavering resolve.

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation is a charity set up in memory of Daniel Wilkinson who died in 2016 aged 24, while playing the game he loved, from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC).
Dan played football from an early age and joined Hull City AFC when he was 10, earning a professional contract aged 18. Loughborough University followed where he completed a degree in Accounting and Financial Management while playing non-league football. He was an athlete who enjoyed the gym and took his health and nutrition very seriously. He lived life to the full and had so much ahead of him.
Other than feeling light-headed on a few occasions in the month before he died, he had no symptoms!
SCD is the leading cause of death in young athletes during sport and the majority of deaths occur with NO SYMPTOMS or family history.
ARVC can be found in one in every 1,000 to 5,000 young adults - IF IT IS LOOKED FOR.
Warning signs may include light-headedness, fainting, palpitations, swollen legs, breathlessness.
Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die from previously undiagnosed heart conditions.
In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89%.
To
The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise awareness of SCD and to provide funding towards heart screening, defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training primarily for grass-roots sporting teams.
Tragedies can be prevented through cardiac screening. It is vital that young people are identified and treated.
