ΧΑΙΡΕΤΙΣΜΟΣ ΥΠΟΥΡΓΟΥ ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΜΟΥ Ο πολιτισμός εξελίσσεται μαζί με την εποχή του και η τέχνη αξιοποιεί κάθε διαθέσιμο μέσο για να αναπτυχθεί. Πάνω σε αυτή την αρχή το Athens Video Art Festival ξεκινά την τέταρτη και πιο δυναμική του μέχρι τώρα υλοποίηση. Έχει πλέον εξελιχθεί σε ένα πρωτοποριακό - δημιουργικό διεθνές festival ψηφιακών τεχνών και νέων μέσων. Σε ένα πολυδιάστατο καλλιτεχνικό θεσμό, που έχει ως στόχο να προωθήσει αυτές τις τόσο ζωντανές και δυναμικές μορφές τέχνης, προσφέροντας ένα πρωτότυπο θέαμα στο ευρύ κοινό. Πάνω από όλα όμως, επιχειρεί μέσα από τη μαζικότητα του χαρακτήρα του να ανοίξει τον δρόμο σε νέους καλλιτέχνες, που νιώθουν την ανάγκη να εκφραστούν και να παρουσιάσουν ρηξικέλευθες και φιλόδοξες δουλειές. Τα αποτελέσματα είναι εντυπωσιακά, ως προς τη συμμετοχή των δημιουργών, είμαι σίγουρος, και ως προς την ανταπόκριση του κοινού.Το Athens Video Art Festival 08, έχει εξελιχθεί σε μία τεράστια γιορτή του ψηφιακού πολιτισμού. Έχει πετύχει να φέρει τη δημιουργία πιο κοντά στις νέες τεχνολογικές τάσεις αλλά και την τέχνη πιο κοντά στους νέους. Αυτός είναι και ο στόχος που έχουμε θέσει στο Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού. Να δημιουργούμε ένα ευνοϊκό περιβάλλον ανάπτυξης του σύγχρονου πολιτισμού. Να δημιουργούμε νέα κανάλια επικοινωνίας. Να βοηθάμε στο σπάσιμο των στεγανών στην τέχνη και την κοινωνία. MESSAGE BY THE MINISTER OF CULTURE Civilization moves forward along with its time and art utilizes all available means to evolve. On this principle, Athens Video Art Festival materializes its fourth and most dynamic edition yet. It has evolved into an innovative creative international festival of digital arts and new media. Into a multidimensional artistic affair, that aims to promote these vibrant and dynamic forms of art, offering an interesting exhibition to the public.

Above all though, it attempts to pave the way for new artists, who feel the need to express and present revolutionary and ambitious work.

The results are impressive, I am sure, both in regard to the participation of artists as well as the reaction of the public. Athens Video Art Festival 08 has evolved into an enormous celebration of digital culture.

It has succeeded in bringing the latest technological tendencies and art closer to the youth.

This is the goal that we have set at the Ministry Of Culture. To create a positive environment of evolution of contemporary culture. To create new channels of communication. ΧΑΙΡΕΤΙΣΜΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΓΕΝΙΚΟΥ ΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΕΑ ΝΕΑΣ ΓΕΝΙΑΣ Το Athens Video Art Festival αποτελεί ένα πρωτοποριακό θεσμό, που χρησιμοποιεί την ψηφιακή τεχνολογία στην τέχνη, προάγοντας τον ψηφιακό πολιτισμό. Η χρήση των νέων πολυμέσων και τεχνολογιών αποτελεί ολοένα και μεγαλύτερο πεδίο έκφρασης και αποτύπωσης των σύγχρονων μορφών δημιουργίας και Τέχνης. Οι καινοτόμες δράσεις των νέων καλλιτεχνών που εκφράζονται με τη συνδρομή της ψηφιακής τεχνολογίας, αγαπήθηκαν από το κοινό, έχοντας πετύχει να εκφράσουν το «σύγχρονο» μέσα από νέoυς εικαστικούς τρόπους. Η συλλογικότητα του εγχειρήματος καταρρίπτει ένα σύστημα που αρχικά ήταν για τους λίγους και «υποψιασμένους». The use of new media and technologies is becoming a steadily growing field of expression and recording of the contemporary forms of creation and Art. The revolutionary actions of new artists that express with the help of digital technology have been endorsed by the public, having managed to express the “contemporary” through new visual methods. The collectivity of the attempt brings down a system that was originally for few. The aesthetics of the works, the plethora of digital images and the experiments of the creators are an interesting and alternative suggestion for the paths on which art may move in the future. Μήνυμα της προέδρου Π.Ο.Δ.Α Ο Πολιτισμικός Οργανισμός του Δήμου Αθηναίων καλωσορίζει στην πόλη μας , για τέταρτη χρονιά , το Athens Art Video Festival 2008 . Τη γιορτή του ψηφιακού πολιτισμού που προκαλεί και προσκαλεί όλους τους νέους καλλιτέχνες να δηλώσουν την καλλιτεχνική στους υπόσταση, να εκφράσουν την πολιτιστική τους άποψη και ταυτότητα με εργαλεία τα πλέον σύγχρονα οπτικοακουστικά μέσα , συνδυάζοντας τη φωτογραφία , την κίνηση , τη μουσική και βεβαίως τον πειραματισμό. Message of the president of C.O.C.A. The Cultural Organization of the City of Athens welcomes to our city, for the fourth year, Athens Video Art Festival 2008.

The celebration of digital culture that invites all young artists to state their artistic nature, to express their cultural opinion and identity using as tools the most contemporary audiovisual means, combining photography, movement, music and of course experimentation. The result is very dynamic, original and multidimensional, promotes artistic intervention, cultural technology and definitely cultural intercourse between artists with different reference points.

MESSAGE BY THE President D.B. “Technopolis”, City of Athens It is with great joy that “Technopolis” of the City of Athens welcomes you to the fourth Athens Video Art Festival, the innovative and multidimensional artistic affair for digital culture and new technologies, that has been endorsed by the public.

This year edition, which is hosted once again in the spaces of our industrial museum, is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport (Ε.Θ.Ε.Λ) and the City of Athens and has the support of the Ministry of Culture, the General Secretariat For Youth and the Cultural Organization of the City of Athens and offers a special sight to the lovers of the moving image.

Through the 315 works of artists from 45 countries that take part in all the categories of the festival accumulatively, the chance is given to meet the most rising form of expression, that combines installation art, performance art, music and mostly imagination and the will to experiment.

For this innovative affair, credit must go both to the participating Greek and foreign artists, as well as the urban non-profitable company Multitrab Productions which contributes to the promotion of digital culture in our country.

Η «Τεχνόπολις» του Δήμου Αθηναίων, συνολικής έκτασης 30 περίπου στρεμμάτων, αποτελεί ένα ζωντανό βιομηχανικό μουσείο απαράμιλλης αρχιτεκτονικής, από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα της Ευρώπης. Στεγάζεται στο παλιό εργοστάσιο Φωταερίου της Αθήνας, γνωστό ως Γκάζι, δίπλα στον Κεραμεικό και κοντά στην Ακρόπολη. Η σταδιακή μεταμόρφωση της σ΄ ένα πολυδύναμο πολιτιστικό κέντρο, που φιλοξενεί εκδηλώσεις ποικίλου ενδιαφέροντος, δίνει την δυνατότητα στον επισκέπτη να περιηγηθεί σε ένα χώρο γεμάτο εικόνες, γνώσεις, και συναισθήματα. Η γοητεία μιας άλλης εποχής, που αποπνέει ο χώρος με τα φουγάρα, τα θεόρατα καζάνια (αεριοφυλάκια), τις καμινάδες και τους φούρνους "συνωμοτεί" ευλαβικά στο να καθιερωθεί ως "εργοστάσιο" προστασίας και παραγωγής της τέχνης, αφού ακόμη και ετυμολογικά η λέξη gas (προέρχεται από την αρχαία γερμανική galist, αργότερα geist) σημαίνει πνεύμα. Λειτουργεί από το 1999 και είναι αφιερωμένη στην μνήμη του αξέχαστου συνθέτη Μάνου Χατζιδάκι. Τιμώντας την ελληνική ποίηση, τα οκτώ κτίρια που λειτουργούν στον χώρο της, φέρουν το όνομα ισάριθμων μεγάλων Ελλήνων ποιητών : Ανδρέας Εμπειρίκος (Αίθουσα Δ1), Άγγελος Σικελιανός (Δ4), Γιάννης Ρίτσος (Αμφιθέατρο Ρ/Σ "Αθήνα 9 ,84 "), Κωστής Παλαμάς (Δ10), Τάκης Παπατσώνης (Δ6), Κωνσταντίνος Καβάφης (Δ7) και Κώστας Βάρναλης (Α8). Σύμβολο της το πρωτότυπο γλυπτό "Η Σφαίρα της Χιλιετίας", έργο του Νίκου- Γιώργου Παπουτσίδη, που απεικονίζει την υδρόγειο σφαίρα να περιβάλλεται από κλάδους ελιάς και να συμβολίζει την ευχή και την ελπίδα να κυριαρχήσει η ειρήνη και η ανθρωπιά σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο.

The Technopolis of the City of Athens covers an area of approximately 30 acres and constitutes a live industrial museum of incomparable architecture and one of the most interesting in Europe. It is located in the old Gas factory in Athens, known as "Gazi", next to the Keramikos close to the Akropolis. Its gradual transformation into a versatile cultural center, hosting various events, gives visitors the chance to wander around in a space full of works of art, knowledge, and sentiments. The charm of another era that is given off by the chimneys, the enormous cauldrons (gas containers), funnels and ovens piously "conspires" to establish the place as a "factory" of art, while in terms of etymology the word "gas" (as originating from the ancient German word "galist", later "geist") means "spirit".

It has been in operation since 1999 and is dedicated to the memory of the unforgettable composer Manos Hatzidakis.

Honouring Greek poetry, eight of the buildings that operate in the area, are named after significant poets: Andreas Empirikos (Building D1), Agelos Sikelianos (D4), Yannis Ritsos (R/S "Athens 9.84 and Amfitheatre"), Kostis Palamas (D10), Takis Papatsonis (D6), Konstantinos Kavafis (D7) and Kostas Varnalis (A8). The symbol of Technopolis is the original sculpture "the Ball of the Millennium", a work of Nikos-Giorgos Papoutsidis, which portrays Earth being surrounded by olive branches and symbolizes the wish and the hope that peace and humanity shall prevail around the world.

Το Athens Video Art Festival είναι ένα δυναμικό και πολυδιάστατο διεθνές φεστιβάλ ψηφιακών τεχνών και νέων μέσων που έχει ως στόχο την προαγωγή του ψηφιακού πολιτισμού. Αποτελεί παράλληλα το επίσημο φεστιβάλ video art της Ελλάδας. Μέσα από τη μαζικότητα του χαρακτήρα του επιχειρεί να ανοίξει ρωγμές σε ένα σύστημα ολίγων. Φέτος διοργανώνεται για τέταρτη συνεχή χρονιά ενώ κάθε έκδοση του φεστιβάλ αποτελεί ένα τολμηρό βήμα μπροστά. Το Athens Video Art Festival επικεντρώνεται στην video art αλλά δεν εξαντλείται σε αυτήν, εντάσσοντας στο πρόγραμμα του συγγενικές μορφές έκφρασης όπως installation art, performance art και μουσική, με τη συνέργεια ψηφιακών τεχνολογιών. Το Athens Video Art Festival περιλαμβάνει έργα καλλιτεχνών από περισσότερες από 40 χώρες ενώ οι συνεργασίες του με καταξιωμένα festival του εξωτερικού έχουν καταστήσει

το Athens Video Art Festival ένα πραγματικά διεθνές γεγονός. Η πορεία του ξεκίνησε το 2005 με το πρώτο Athens Video Art Festival, το οποίο αποτέλεσε μια πολύ καλή αφετηρία με τη συμμετοχή 180 καλλιτεχνών και την παρουσία 1000 ατόμων. Το επόμενο έτος πραγματοποιήθηκε το δεύτερο Athens Video Art Festival με τις δηλώσεις των καλλιτεχνών να αγγίζουν τις 600, ενώ οι παρευρισκόμενοι ξεπέρασαν τους 2800. Στο δεύτερο Athens Video Art Festival ενσωματώθηκαν νέες κατηγορίες όπως installations και performances, κάνοντας το φεστιβάλ ένα πληρέστερο και πολυδιάστατο καλλιτεχνικό θεσμό. Η επιτυχία του Athens Video Art Festival μεγεθύνθηκε με την τρίτη συνεχόμενη διοργάνωση του, το Athens Video Art Festival 07, για την οποία έγιναν 1200 δηλώσεις συμ-

μετοχής και στην οποία περισσότερα από 11 000 άτομα έδωσαν το παρόν τους. Το φεστιβάλ εγκαινίασε τη συνεργασία του με τον πολιτιστικό χώρο «Τεχνόπολις», η οποία έδωσε νέες δυνατότητες στο φεστιβάλ, με την ιδιαίτερη αισθητική του και τις μεγαλύτερες διαστάσεις. Για την τέταρτη συνεχόμενη διοργάνωση του φεστιβάλ, το Athens Video Art Festival 08, έγιναν 1350 δηλώσεις συμμετοχής. Συνεχίζεται η συνεργασία με την «Τεχνόπολις» ενώ η νέα έκδοση του φεστιβάλ φέρνει μαζί της ολοκληρωμένες μουσικές συναυλίες και την νέα κατηγορία της “web art”.

To Athens Video Art Festival τελεί τελεί υπό την Αιγίδα του Υπουργείου Μεταφορών (Ε.Θ.Ε.Λ) και του Δήμου Αθηναίων και πραγματοποιείται με την υποστήριξη του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού, της Γενικής Γραμματείας Νέας Γενιάς και του Πολιτισμικού Οργανισμού του Δήμου Αθηναίων.

Athens Video Art Festival is a dynamic and multi-dimensional international festival for digital arts and new media, which aims to the promotion of digital culture. It attempts to create cracks to a system which is considered “elite”.

The festival takes place for the fourth consecutive year, while each new edition of Athens Video Art Festival is a leap forward.

Athens Video Art Festival focuses on video art but also embraces collaborating forms of expression like installation art and performance art with the use of digital technologies. Athens Video Art Festival includes works from more than 40 countries. This, as well as its collaborative relationships with acclaimed foreign festivals, makes it a truly international fair.

Its course started in 2005 with the first Athens Video Art Festival, which was an excellent starting point with the attendance of 180 artists and the presence of 1000 people.

Next year, the second Athens Video Art Festival took place with 600 artists submitting entries and 2800 people attending the event. New categories were incorporated into the festival (installations and performances), making it a more complete and multi-dimensional artistic affair.

The success of Athens Video Art Festival continued with its third consecutive edition, Athens Video Art Festival 07, for which 1200 submissions were made. More than 11 000 people attended the event. The festival

started its cooperation with the “Tecnopolis” venue of the Municipal of Athens, which extended its capabilities with its big spaces and special aesthetics. For its fourth consecutive materialization, Athens Video Art Festival 08, 1350 submissions were made.

The cooperation with “Technopolis” continues and the new edition incorporates complete music concerts and the new category “web art”.

Athens Video Art Festival is under the Auspices of the Ministry of Athens and the Municipal of Athens, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the General Secretariat For Youth and the Cultural Organisation of the City of Athens.

IS AN URBAN NON PROFITABLE COMPANY, based in Athens, that aims to the promotion of the art work of Greek and foreign artists, as well as the organization of promotional activities involving digital arts.

Έχοντας σαν κεντρικούς άξονες το πνεύμα, την ενέργεια, και τη δράση των νέων καλλιτεχνών συμβάλει στην σύνδεση του ψηφιακού πολιτισμού με τα πιο σύγχρονα νεανικά καλλιτεχνικά δρώμενα. Ταυτόχρονα δίνει στους καλλιτέχνες επιπλέον κίνητρο για δημιουργία, καθώς και την ευκαιρία να εκφραστούν χρησιμοποιώντας όλα τα οπτικοακουστικά μέσα παρουσιάζοντας το έργο τους.

With main arbors the spirit, the energy and the actions of young artists, it contributes to the connection between digital culture and young contemporary artistic events. At the same time, it provides the artists with additional motivation for creativity, as well as the chance to express using all audiovisual media in presenting their art work.

Βασικό αντικείμενο δράσης της αποτελεί το Athens Video Art Festival, το οποίο πλαισιώνεται από μια σειρά παράλληλων δράσεων, που πραγματοποιεί καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του έτους. Η Multitrab Productions υλοποιεί την παραγωγή, διοργάνωση και προώθηση των δράσεων αυτών, παράλληλα με την ετήσια διοργάνωση του Athens Video Art Festival, έχοντας ως σκοπό την επαφή του κοινού και την εξοικείωση του με τα νέα μέσα και τον ψηφιακό πολιτισμό.

The main objective of its activity consists of the Athens Video Art Festival, which is accompanied by a series of parallel activities, which are realised thorough the year. Multitrab Productions materialises the production, organization and promotion of these activities, besides the annual materialization of Athens Video Art Festival, with the aim to adapt the public to new media and digital culture.

Ψ Η Φ Ι Α Κ Η Η Ψηφιακή Τέχνη είναι αδιαμφισβήτητα η τέχνη της σύγχρονης εποχής. Με τον όρο αυτό εννούμε γραφικές εικόνες, που φτιάχνονται με pixels παρά με λάδια ή μολύβια. Τέτοιες εικόνες δημιουργούνται με τη βοήθεια δισδιάστατων ή τρισδιάστατων προγραμμάτων γραφικών και μπορούν να επανασυντεθούν και να συνδυαστούν κάθε λογής παραδοσιακής εικαστικής τέχνης στοιχεία, από πίνακες ελαιογραφίας, ως σχέδια με πένα και μελάνι, φω-

and they magically D I G I T A L Digital Art is indisputably the Art of modern times. It is graphic images that are made by pixels more than paints or pencils.

This kind of images are created with the aid of 2D or 3D graphic programs and can recompose and combine every kind of elements of “traditional” forms of art such as oil paintings, pen and ink drawings, photographs, collages or photomontages.

Digital art is definitely selective.

A digital image can be surreal or recomposed: it can be an image created completely digitally or it can include elements from other mediums that have been scanned and modified.

Electronic technology explores the parameters of the visual world.

It peaks in an emancipated fantasy giving the artists a profusion of colours and a blistering proces-

Η Video Art είναι μια από τις πιο ανατρεπτικές μορφές της σύγχρονης τέχνης...πρόκειται για ψηφιακά έργα τέχνης που έχουν σαν κύριο μέσο έκφρασης το video…μέσα από το video οι καλλιτέχνες παράγουν ή αναπαράγουν εικόνες με εικαστικό προσανατολισμό κάνοντας χρήση της φόρμας και του χρώματος...η φωτογραφία, η κίνηση, η μουσική γίνονται εργαλεία στα χέρια των καλλιτεχνών και απελευθερώνουν τη φαντασία και τη διάθεση για πειραματισμό σε ένα πεδίο, που προσελκύει Ανθρώπους των Τεχνών και όχι καλλιτέχνες κάποιας συκεκριμένης πρακτικής. Εικαστικοί, μουσικοί, χορευτές, ποιητές επιλέγουν το video ως μέσο έκφρασης και μέσα από τον πειραματισμό και τις διαφορετικές αισθητικές αναζητήσεις δοκιμάζονται τα πάντα, ορθόδοξη και ανορθόδοξη χρήση της τεχνολογίας, επιτυγχάνοντας έτσι τη διαμόρφωση μιας νέας «Καλλιτεχνικής Γλώσσας».

Οι ηλεκτρονικές μορφές τέχνης είναι ένα φαινόμενο της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας ακόμη ζωντανό και εν εξελίξει. Η αλλαγή πλεύσης της τέχνης στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1960 περιελάμβανε και τον πειραματισμό των καλλιτεχνών με νέα μέσα και την ανάπτυξη πολλών μορφων τέχνης ηλεκρονικού χαρακτήρα.Oι δεκαετίες του 1960 και 1970 ήταν δεκαετίες ταραγμένες, με συνεχείς ανακατατάξεις και αλλαγές δεδομένων σε όλα τα επίπεδα της ζωής των ανθρώπων. Η ανθρώπινη καθημερινότητα εμπαινε σε νέες τροχιές, τις οποίες η τέχνη καλούνταν να ακολουθήσει. Μέσα από τις συνθήκες αυτές των συνεχών και μεγάλων ανακατατάξεων η video art γεννήθηκε και προσπάθησε να ανθήσει. Τις δύο πρώτες δεκαετίες της ζωής της το περιεχόμενο των έργων της είχε κυρίως πειραματικό χαρακτήρα και ευθυγραμμιζόταν με τα άλλα κυρίαρχα της εποχής ρεύ-

ματα, όπως ήταν οι Δράσεις και τα Happenings. Ως το 1980 το video θεωρούνταν περιθωριακή μορφή τέχνης και ανήκε σε ένα κλειστό κύκλωμα ειδημόνων, που ήταν θαμώνες των διάφορων γκαλερί. Στην δεκαετία του 1980 τα Video Festivals αυξήθηκαν τόσο σε αριθμό όσο και σε ποιότητα, το καθένα με τις ιδιαιτερότητες αλλά και την αυθεντικότητα του. Η μαζικότητα των festivals αυτών συνέβαλλε στην ευρεία και ραγδαία εξάπλωση της video art, η οποία λόγω του μέσου προβολής της (τηλεόραση) έγινε γρήγορα και εύκολα αποδεκτή. Η δεκαετία του 1990 με τις τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις έδωσε στη video art καινούρια εφόδια για να κατακτήσει τον κόσμο της σύγχρονης τέχνης και δικαίως να χαρακτηριστεί μια από τις πιο φιλόδοξες, καινοτόμες, δυναμικές και πολυσυλλεκτικές μορφές τέχνης.

Video Art is one of the most subversive forms of art…digital works of art that use video as a medium towards expression…through video, artists produce or reproduce images with artistic concepts using shapes and colours…photography, movement and music become “tools” and set imagination and experimentation free in a field that attracts people of Art and non artists of a specific practice. Painters, musicians, dancers, poets choose video as a means of expression and through experimentation and different aesthetic outlets everything is practiced, orthodox and unorthodox use of technology, coming this way to a formation of a new “Artistic Language”.

Electronic forms of art is a phenomenon of modern society still alive and in progress. The change of orientation in Arts at the late 60’s embraced among others the

experimentation with new media and leaded to the formation of many forms of art of electronic nature. The 60’s and the 70’s were very turbulent with constant changes in all aspects of life. Every day life was in transition and art was called to follow up. Through these constant changes and transitions Video Art was born and tried to bloom.

The two first decades of its life the content of video works was mainly experimental and followed the tracks of other mainstream movements like Performances and Happenings.

Video Art, which became easily and quickly accepted from the audience due to its projection medium, that was no other than the television device.

The technological development that the 90’s brought gave Video Art new accoutrements to conquer the world of contemporary art and be defined as one of the most ambitious, innovative, dynamic and multi-dimensional forms of art.

Until the 80’s video was considered to be a marginal form of art and belonged to a very closed network of connoisseurs. But during the 80’s Video Art Festivals increased in quantity and quality. The massive character of these Festivals contributed to the wide and fast spread of

Πρόκειται για Εγκαταστάσεις, στις oποίες ενσωματώνονται έργα video ανεξάρτητα ή σε συνδυασμό με άλλα μέσα (Πολυμεσικές Εγκαtαστάσεις - Multimedia Installations). Μέσω των προβολων δημιουργούν μια περίπλοκη οπτική κατασκευή, που αντιδρά με τον περιβάλλοντα χώρο και απαιτεί την αδιαμεσολάβητη συμμετοχή του θεατή. Films, Slides και αντικείμενα συνδυάζονται και αντιτίθενται με σκοπό τη δημιουργία μιας πολυμορφικής πλαστικής εικόνας.

A sub-category of Installations are Video Installations, which incorporate video projections. These projections can take place on their own or along with other mediums (Multimedia Installations). Through projection these Installations create a complicated visual construction that reacts to the surrounding space and requires the free participation of the spectator. Films, Slides and objects are combined and coming in contrast towards the creation of a multifigural visual image.

The initially continuous, almost meditative movement is covered by an enormous wave of images that invades the entire surface of the screen. Recognizable images and logical architectural elements are transformed into nearly abstract structures. Τhe role of a passive spectator changes into that of a magically entranced object.

IS151b is the name of a British government form. It is a notice of removal, issued to illegal entrants (refugees) whose application for asylum has been refused. The secondary title and the projected image are a metaphor for how we select some aspects of foreign culture and reject other aspects.

Σε μία οθόνη βλέπουμε ένα χρυσόψαρο να κολυμπάει μέσα και έξω από το σκοτάδι, δίνοντας την ψευδαίσθηση του άπειρου. Σε μια άλλη οθόνη βλέπουμε το ψάρι από ψηλάνα κολυμπάει στον αέραπάνω από τον εναέριο χάρτη μίας Παλαιστινιακής πόλης που είναι περικυκλωμένη από το Ισραηλινόδιαχωριστικό τοίχος.

In one screen we see the goldfish swim in and out of darkness, giving the illusion of infinite space in total darkness. In the other screen we see an overview of the goldfish swimming on top of an aerial map of a Palestinian city encompassed by the Israeli segregation wall. While the fish’s movement undermines the borders set up by the map, it is still caught up in a catch 22: where it is both free and confined at the same time.

Επίσημα , ξαναεπισκέπτεται τη βίντεο γλυπτική της δεκαετίας του 70 και του 80 χρησιμοποιώντας την τεχνολογία των σημερινών καλλιτεχνών βίντεο. Η γλυπτική μορφή της δουλειάς ηχεί την αβέβαιη ισορροπία των ανθρώπινων σχέσεων, στις οποίες συχνά αποτελεί πάλη η διατήρηση της ισορροπίας.

This is a retro cognitive video work in that uses television sets and natural materials as sculptural elements. Formally, it revisits the video sculpture of the 70s and 80s using the technology of today’s video artists. The sculptural form of the work echoes the precarious balance of human relationships, which are often a struggle to maintain equilibrium.

My work is deals with the relation existing between the material and spiritual world. Both videos are in a state of mutual contact. The embracing movements of these palms, signify either our material aspect of view (painted in red) or, submerge our profound enlightenment (blue forms of light).

In a virtually empty room with white walls, there is a white column as a support of the building. Behind the column there is a secret door covered by heavy drapes. The viewer enters the column shutting behind them the curtain. In the column it’s dark and the video/sound are played infinitely

Ο τίτλος και το θέμα της video installation είναι εμπνευσμένα από την performance της Abramovic με τον ίδιο τίτλο (Imponderabilia) που παρουσιάστηκε στη galleria Di Arte Moderna της Bologna και ουσιαστικά επεξεργάζεται τη σχέση παρατηρητή – φυσικό σώμα (Abramovic) σε αντίθεση με τη σχέση παρατηρητή – ψηφιακό σώμα (η video installation που εγώ προτείνω).

The title and the subject of this video installation are inspired from the performance of Abramovic under the same title (Imponderabilia) whose presentation was made in galleria Di Arte Moderna of Bologna and mainly is processing the relation observer – natural body (Abramovic) in contradiction with the relation observer – digital body (the video installation that I suggest).

Πρόκειται για μια βίντεο εγκατάσταση που αποτελείται από 2 βίντεο, που βρίσκονται ακριβώς απέναντι. Στο πρώτο παρουσιάζομαι εγώ, σε φυσικό μέγεθος και μαύρο φόντο , να πετάω μια πέτρα, και μετά από λίγο να επιστρέφει αυτή στα χέρια μου, σε λούπα. Στο δεύτερο βίντεο φαίνεται η ίδια πέτρα, να συγκρούεται σε ένα μαύρο τοίχο, να σπάει και έπειτα να ανασυντίθενται, και σε συγχρονισμό με το απέναντι βίντεο, να επιστρέφει αυτή στα χέρια μου. Ο φυσικός χώρος που δημιουργεί αυτή η σχέση των δύο βίντεο, με τη πτήση της πέτρας να ‘πραγματοποιείται’ ουσιαστικά πάνω από το κεφάλι του θεατή, κάνει τα έργο να ολοκληρώνεται στο μυαλό του. Α video installation composed of two videos that are exactly opposite. The first is shows me, in natural size and in black background, throwinga stone , and after a while it returns to me , in a loop. In the second video you can see the same stone, crashing over a black wall, it breaks and then it comes back together, and synchronized with the other video, it seems that the stone returns to me. The physical space that is created by this relation between the videos, by the flight of the stone that is ‘realized’ over the head of the spectator, makes the installation completed by his imagination.

The Space Time Pixels is an installation based on a networked application that records body activity and generates an electronic filter of visual communication. This filter is a wall projected, shared space, which signifies the overlooked ambient data, people unconsciously transmit when co existing, thus supporting the generation of original interaction between multiple participants in a single or two distant physical spaces.

Το σώμα είναι τοποθετημένο μέσα σε ένα πλαστικό κύβο γεμάτο με αέρα, δημιουργώντας αίσθηση προσωπικού χώρου μέσα στο κοινό (χώρο). Με ένα πλαστικό σωλήνα και μόνο με την διαδικασία της αναπνοήςο αέρας διοχετεύεται στον έξω χώρο. Ο προσωπικός χώρος μεταμορφώνεται μέσα από την ακινησία του σώματος και τη έλλειψη του αέρα μέχρι χώρος και σώμα γίνονται ένα.

The body is placed inside a plastic cube filled with air, creating the feel of personal space within the public (space). With a plastic tube and with only the breathing process, the air is expelled to the outside surroundings. Personal space is transformed through the stillness of the body and the decrease of air untill space and body become one.

Οι Εγκαταστάσεις αποτελούν ένα από τα σημαντικότερα είδη σύγχρονης τέχνης παγκοσμίως. Ξεκίνησαν στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1970 ως μια «διαμαρτυρία» των καλλιτεχνών στους αποστειρωμένους χώρους των μουσείων και των γκαλερί. Πρόκειται στην ουσία για εικαστικά ενεργοποιημένους χώρους, στους οποίους ο θεατής καλείται να συμμετάσχει και να τους βιώσει με όλες του τις αισθήσεις. Τα έργα αυτά γεμίζουν, περιβάλλουν έναν χώρο και προσκαλούν τον θεατή να συμμετάσχει ενεργά σε αυτά, να τα ενεργοποιήσει για να ενεργοποιήσουν κι αυτά με τη σειρά τους τον χώρο. Οι Εγκαταστάσεις παίζουν με τις σχέσεις χώρου – έργου – θεατή και βασίζονται στις σχέσεις αλληλόδρασης αυτών. Οι θεατές πολλές φορές καλούνται να λάβουν μέρος σε μια εικαστική εμπειρία η οποία διαχωρίζεται ξεκάθαρα από τη ζωγραφική, τη γλυπτική ή την αρχιτεκτονική και η οποία απαιτεί από αυτούς να ενεργοποιήσουν την ακοή, την όραση, την αφή ή ακόμη και την όσφρηση τους προκειμένου να βιώσουν το έργο σε όλα τα επίπεδα. Οι θεατές μπορούν να περπατήσουν μέσα σε μία Εγκατάσταση, να την αγγίξουν και να αποδειχθούν οι ίδιοι οργανικά στοιχεία του έργου.

Installations are one of the most important forms of contemporary art worldwide. It began in the early 70’s as an artists’ protest to the sterilized spaces of art galleries and museums. They are artistically activated spaces, in which the spectator is called to participate and experience them with all of his senses. These works of art fill, surround a space and challenge the spectator to actively interact with them, to activate them so that they can activate the surrounding space. Installations play with the connection of space-work of art – spectator and count on this interaction.

Spectators are often called to take part in an artistic experience which is by far different than painting, sculpture or architecture and requires the activation of hearing, vision, touch and even scent in order to experience the work in all levels. Spectators can walk through an Installation, touch it and turn out to be organic elements of the work.

Χρυσή ανακούφιση Η κατασκευή μου ειναι απο ανκυκλώσιμα μπουκάλια επιχρυσωμένα. Η ιδεολογία του έργου προήλθε από την έλλειψη νερού και το γεγονός ότι πρέπει να πληρώνουμε για να το έχουμε.Σε λίγα χρόνια η αξία του θα είναι όσο του χρυσού.

My Installations is made from recycled water bottles painted gold. My starting point was based on the shortage of it and the fact that we have to pay to obtain it . In few years it will be worth gold.

Based on advertising mechanisms on top of buildings and have turning parts so that the ad can change. Instead of the ads we have the portraits of 3 women in 3 different ages. The viewer can turn the parts so that new faces, a combination of the three original portraits, can be created.

Στόμα Το Στόμα είναι ένα interactive κομμάτι για φωνή. Απευθύνεται σε ένα performer και έναν ακροατή. Είναι εμπνευσμένο απο τον θεατρικό μονόλογο του Beckett με τίτλο ΝΟΤ Ι (μτφρ: ΟΧΙ ΕΓΩ). Ένα μικρό απόσπασμα του κειμένου αποτελεί τη βάση πάνω στην οποία κτίζεται ένα ηχοτοπίο απο προηχογραφημένες φωνές. Ο επισκέπτης καλείται να συμμετάσχει σε αυτό ανακαλύπτοντας τις κρυμμένες μελωδιές του κειμένου αλλά και της ίδιας του της φωνής.

Stoma (the Greek equivalent for mouth) is an interactive voice piece for one performer and one listener. It is inspired by Beckett’s theatrical monologue entitled Not I. A short excerpt of the text is used as the canvas on which a series of pre-recorded interpretations of it builds up. The visitors are invited to perform in this soundscape and discover not only the hidden melodies of the text but of their own voices as well.

The suitcase is illustrated with tickets, maps, and other characteristics of our complicated connected civilization and also contains two designs-comments about the influence on the people and the artist of the complexity, the movement and the connection in the contemporary world.

Sllod II Ένας κύβος κατασκευασμένος από plexiglass διαστάσεων 0.80Χ0.80Χ0.80, ο οποίος συναπαρτίζεται από οκτώ μικρότερους κύβους διαστάσεων 0.40Χ0.40Χ0.40. Στην κάθε πλευρά του κύβου υπάρχει εκτυπωμένη ψηφιακή εικόνα. Ο θεατής καλείται να συμμετάσχει στο έργο, συναρμολογώντας τους κύβους και αποκαλύπτοντας έτσι τις εννιά διαφορετικές παραστάσεις του έργου.

A cube made of Plexiglas, whose dimensions are 0.80X0.80X0.80. It consists of eight smaller cubes, whose dimensions are 0.40X0.40X0.40.

In each side of cube, where is a printed digital picture. The audience is asked participate in the work of art, by fitting together the cubes and this way revealing its nine different depictions.

Performance Art είναι η τέχνη, στην οποία μέσα σε μια έντονα συγκινησιακά φορτισμένη ατμόσφαιρα διάφορα καλλιτεχνικά συμφραζόμενα (ποίηση, χορός, μουσική, ζωγραφική, video) λαμβάνουν χώρα, αναμένοντας και εγκολπώνοντας τις αυθόρμητες αντιδράσεις του κοινού. Όταν η Δράση τελειώσει δεν αναπαράγεται στο ακέραιο ποτέ ξανά. Είναι μια «γιορτή» της στιγμής. «Είναι εξ’ορισμού αμετακίνητη στο χώρο και μη αναπαράξιμη στο χρόνο» (Allan Kaprow). Πρόκειται για «collage Δράσεων», που σημαίνουν τη «μετατόπιση της τέχνης από την παραγωγή αντικειμένων στην παραγωγή εμπειριών» (Άλκης Χαραλαμπίδης). Το σώμα του καλλιτέχνη γίνεται το κυρίαρχο μέσο έκφρασης, που σε συνδυασμό με την πραγμάτευση του χώρου, του χρόνου και του κοινού προσφέρουν ένα εντυπωσιακό και πρωτότυπο θέαμα.

Performance Art is a form of art, in which various artistic acts (poetry, dance, music, painting, video) take place in an intense emotional atmosphere, awaiting and incorporating the impulsive reactions of the audience. When a Performance is over it can never be recreated completely again. It is a “celebration” of the moment. “it is by definition immovable in space and non reproductive in time” (Allan Kaprow). It is a “collage of actions” that signify the shift of art “from producing objects to produce experiences” (Alkes Charalambides). The body of the artist becomes the main medium of expression which in conjuncture with the discourse of space, time and the audience offers an impressive and original show.

A KIN Ομάδα Σύγχρονου Χορού

“Suicide” Ο άνθρωπος πλησιάζει τον καθρέφτη. Μαζί με αυτόν καταφθάνει το είδωλο του. Το είδωλο είναι “ταυτόχρονο”. Μόνο που κάποια στιγμή το είδωλο αντιδρά. Μια μάχη γεννιέται. Ένα είδωλο προσπαθεί να απελευθερωθεί, ένας άνθρωπος να το υποδουλώσει. Η μάχη τελειώνει. Ένα χέρι σχίζει τον καθρέφτη και φέρνει μπροστά, στην πραγματικότητα, μια φανταστική καρδιά ο άνθρωπος, την σκοτώνει. Έχει το τηλεκοντρόλ στο χέρι του.

Human approaches the mirror. Along with him comes his reflection. His reflection is synchronized. Sometime the reflection rebels. A combat begins. A reflection tries to be set free, a human tries to slave it.

Combat ends. A hand rips the mirror to bring forward to reality a visual heart. The human kills it. The human has the remote control at hand

Deadbeat Escapement

“Untitled” Πάνω στη σκηνή δύο λευκά αγάλματα αναπαριστούν παιδικά παιχνίδια ενώ οι Deadbeat Escapement παίζουν μουσική. Στο ένα γλυπτό προβάλλονται εικόνες από την καθημερινή ζωή στη πόλη ενώ στο άλλο σκηνές από πολέμους που βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη αυτή τη στιγμή στο πλανήτη. Στο 6ο κομμάτι από το play list όλα τα μέλη του συγκροτήματος γονατίζουν. Ένα μέλος πλησιάζει τον κιθαρίστα κι αρχίζει να διαβάζει το ποίημα που είναι γραμμένο πάνω στο στήθος του. Στο κοινό μοιράζονται κονσέρβες που περιέχουν το ίδιο ποίημα γραμμένο σε ένα χαρτί. «Όπου χτυπάει η σφαίρα χτυπάει η καρδιά μου...»

On stage two white statues that reproduce popular children plays while the Deadbeat Escapement performs live. On one statue are projected everyday life city pictures and on the other war scenes from wars in different parts of the planet. At the 6th song of the play list all members of the group are kneeling. One of them approaches the guitarist and reads the poem written on his chest. Cans containing the poem that is written on a piece of paper are given away to the audience.

“The Sphinx Game” Παίζουμε το «Παιχνίδι της Σφίγγας» : μια ψηφιακή μορφή τραγωδίας όπου το αίνιγμα της Σφίγγας μετατρέπεται σε παιχνίδι με την ειμαρμένη.

To πεπρωμένο μπορεί ν’ αντιστραφεί εφόσον ο χρήστης του υπολογιστή θα αποκωδικοποιήσει τον χρόνο. Τότε το «παιχνίδι» τελειώνει. H Σφίγγα ενσαρκώνεται. Τίποτα δεν υπόκειται στην γραμμικότητα των γεγονότων : η Σφίγγα κι ο Οιδίπους έχουν το λιγότερο ΜΙΑ επιπλέον πιθανότητα ν’ ανατρέψουν το αναπόφευκτο..

Everybody plays “The Sphinx Game”: a digital interface of a tragedy, where Sphinx’s enigma turns into gambling with fate. If the computer’s user will achieve to decodificate time, destiny could be reversed and the Sphinx will appear. The “game” ends. We perforate form to perform the performance. There is no linear sequence: Sphinx and Oedipus have at least ONE extra chance to subvert the inevitable.

Project dedicated to light and darkness. Wave, light that comes, light that goes. Drop, substance of existence, light that flows eternally.

Embryo in the vagina, diver in the sea. Drop that manages to overwhelm the whole world, possibly our eyes...

“Performance In The Passage” Δύο άτομα, κρατόντας το καθένα διαφανή κολλητικές ταινίες, αρχίζουν να ενώνουν σημεία και αντικείμενα στο χώρο, σε έναν περιορισμένο χώρο. Ξεκινάει ο ένας κολλάει την ταινία σε ένα σημείο και έπειτα την δίνει στον άλλον και ταυτόχρονα παίρνει τη δικιά του ταινία, έτσι ώστε να δημιουργείτε μια αλληλεπίδραση μεταξύ των γραμμών που σχηματίζει ο καθένας κολλώντας την ταινία σε διαφορα σημεία.έτσι συμμετέχουν κ οι δύο στο παιχνίδι της δημιουργίας εμποδίων κ αυτο εγκλωβισμού. κατ’επέκταση η δράση οδηγεί στην κατάργηση της λειτουργικότητας του περάσματος και στην παρεμπόδιση των θεατών.για τις μέρες μετά την πραγματοποίηση της δράσης, προτείνετε να παραμείνει η εγκατάσταση που θα έχει δημιουργηθεί από τη performance, αναπαράγοντασ ταυτόχρονα τον ήχο της δράσης.( καθώς αυτή θα έχει ηχογραφηθεί)

Τwo persons holding a transparent tapes , begin to unite spots and objects in the space, in a limited space. one of them sticks his tape in a spot and then gives it at the other person when at the same time takes his partner’s tape. so the lines created from their tapes begin to interact. so both of them participate in a game of creating obstacles and hemming. so the functionalism of the space dissapeares and it hems the spectators. it is suggested that in the days after the performance, the installation created during the action it stays as it will be and the sound of the action will be reproduced repetidly at the same space. “Versus” Οι performers Μάνος. Αιμίλιος, Δημήτρης, Κώστας μακιγιάρονται, φοράνε τα γάντια, παλεύουν, ιδρώνουν και οι θεατές στοιχηματίζουν στο νικητή. Με αναφορά στη πολεμική τέχνη και συγκεκριμένα στους Ταϋλανδούς boxers “Lady Boy”, η αντιπαράθεση του αρσενικού με το “θηλυκό” είναι το σύμβολο κάθε εσωτερικής διαμάχης, που γίνεται το σχόλιο για τη βία του πολέμου σήμερα.

The performers Manos, Aimilios, Dimitris, Kostas, wear makeup, put on their gloves, fight, sweat and the spectators bet on the winner.

In reference to the martial arts and to Thailand boxers “Lady Boy” in particular, the comparison between male and “female” is the symbol of each internal conflict that becomes the comment on the violence of war today.

“Meat Me” Συνάντησε με, κατακρεουργησέ με, φάε με. Οι συναντήσεις-σχέσεις με τους ‘άλλους’ εγκυμονούν κινδύνους.Δούλοι της απληστίας, κυριευμένοι από την ανθρώπινη αδηφαγία, πλησιάζουμε τον άλλο μόνο για να πάρουμε. Κατατάσουμε τις φιλίες μας με γνώμονα το συμφέρον, και προσεγγύζουμε τον άλλο σαν ένα μέσο επίτευξης των επιθυμιών μας. Η δυσπιστία είναι η προέχουσα ιδιότητα μας.Αναζητούμε την κοινωνική αποδοχή πλάθοντας μια πλαστή εικόνα για τον εαυτό μας, ζώντας το μυθο του παντοτινού. Ματαιότητα και εμμόνη με την εμφάνιση. Επιτιδευμένη κοινωνικότητα, ρούχα, δίαιτες και πλαστικές χειρουργικές. Μέσα στην κοινωνία της βίας και της αποχαύνωσης γινόμαστε αδιάφοροι παρατηρητές του πόνου του άλλου,. Καταναλώνουμε ασυνείδητα το ‘κρέας’ των άλλων, ενώ διατηρόντας μια υπερευαισθησία με τη δικιά μας ύλη, αρνούμαστε να αποδεχτούμε το φθαρτό της ανθρωπινης φύσης, την ανικανότητα άσκησης ελένγχου του χρόνου.

Meet me, meat me, eat me.It is fraught with danger to meet others and make relationships with them.Slaves to avarice and overcome by human voracity, we approach each other with a view to obtaining. We rate people among our friends out of interest, and we approach each other in order to satisfy our desires. Distrust is our dominant characteristic. We seek our social acceptance by creating a false image of ourselves, thus living the enduring myth. Personal vanity about and obsession with our appearance.

Affected Sociability, clothes, diets and plastic surgeries. We are becoming indifferent onlookers to the others’ suffering in the violent and stultifying society we live. We consume the others’‘meat’ unconsciously. While displaying hypersensitivity to our own organic matter we refuse to accept the mortality of human nature and our incapacity to control time.

Σπάρταλης Άγγελος

“ Το Τέλος του Κόσμου (The End of the World)” «Το τέλος του κόσμου» είναι ένα video-θεατρικό ποίημα του Άγγελου Σπάρταλης. Πρόκειται για μια προβολή video που γίνεται πάνω σε ένα ανθρώπινο σώμα . Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, το σώμα λειτουργεί σαν μία ζωντανή οθόνη προβολής που χορεύει. Τα κείμενα που απαγγέλλονται αναφέρονται στον έρωτα, στην οικολογία και στον πόλεμο. Στο έργο γίνεται χρήση μιας βίαιης αλλά και ποιητικής γλώσσας και παρουσιάζεται ένας νέος, ανεξερεύνητος μέχρι τώρα τρόπος να αφηγείται ο άνθρωπος τις ιστορίες του.

“The end of the world” is a videotheatre performance by Angelos Spartalis. It is a video projection on a human body. In this way, the body functions as a live projection screen that dances. The texts that are recited refer to love, ecology and war. During the performance there is use of violent but poetic language and the presentation of a new, so far unexplored way for man to narrate his stories

Η Web Art αποτελεί το πιο νέο «παιδί» των ψηφιακών τεχνών. Ακολουθώντας τις τάσεις της σύγχρονης ζωής η τέχνη «καταδύεται» στο διαδίκτυο και διευρύνει ακόμη περισσότερο το φάσμα και τις αναζητήσεις της. Επιτρέπει την ιδιωτική θέαση ενός έργου τέχνης και σπάει όσο καμία άλλη μορφή τέχνης τα δεσμά των παραδοσιακών χώρων έκθεσης. Η διαφορά μεταξύ των υπολογιστών και του κυβερνοχώρου έχει συγκριθεί με τη διαφορά ανάμεσα σε μια βόλτα με ένα πλοίο με γυάλινο πάτο και στην κατάδυση. Οι επιβάτες του πλοίου βλέπουν το βυθό ενόσω παραμένουν κολλημένοι στη θέση τους. Οι δύτες όμως βυθίζονται στον ωκεανό.όπως στην κατάδυση, έτσι και η τέχνη στον κυβερνοχώρο καλεί τους ανθρώπους να εγκαταλείψουν την προσκόλληση τους στον οικείο χειροπιαστό κόσμο. Το κοινό καταδύεται σε ένα περιβάλλον που είναι πολυαισθητηριακό και διαδραστικό. Είναι απλή φαντασία. Αυτή η νέα πραγματικότητα υπάρχει χωρίς κανένα υλικό αντίστοιχο.

Web art is Digital Art’s youngest descendant. Keeping tracks of cotemporary life’s trends, art is “diving” in the Internet and broadens even more the context of its quest. Web art allows private viewings of an art work and breaks like no other form of art the bondage of traditional exhibition spaces.

The difference between computers and the Internet has been compared to the difference between the ride with a ship with glass bottom and free diving. The passengers of the ship can see the bottom of the sea while they remain stuck in their seats. But the divers dive straight into the ocean. Like diving, Web Art calls people to abandon their adherence to the common tangible world. The audience dives into an environment that is multisensory and interactive. It is plain imagination. This new reality exists without a material equivalent.

Το Athens Video Art Festival 08 σε μια προσπάθεια να φέρει το ευρύ κοινό σε επαφή με τον ακαδημαϊκό χαρακτήρα της Video Art φιλοξενεί φέτος στο πρόγραμμα του τρία μεγάλα Ανώτατα Εκπαιδευτικά Ιδρύματα, δύο Ελληνικά και ένα Γερμανικό, που περιλαμβάνουν στο Πρόγραμμα Σπουδών τους το μάθημα της Video Art. Στόχος είναι να παρουσιαστεί η δουλειά, που γίνεται στα Τμήματα αυτά αλλά και να δωθεί μια ευκαιρία στους φοιτητές να προβάλλουν τη δουλειά τους. Τα Πανεπιστήμια και οι φορείς τους ανταποκρίθηκαν άμεσα στο κάλεσμα του Athens Video Art Festival και έθεσαν τος βάσεις για έναν δημιουργικό διάλογο, που επιθμία μας είναι στις επόμενες διοργνώσεις να εδριαωθεί και να διευρυνθεί. Athens Video Art Festival 08 in an attempt to establish a contact between the audience and the academic aspect of Video Art, hosts in its Program three big Academic Institutions, two Greek and one German, that include Video Art in their Studies Program. Our aim is to present the work done within these Institutes and give the students a chance to promote their work.

These Institutes lapped up to the call of Athens Video Art Festival and laid the basis for a creative dialogue, which we desire to establish and broaden within the upcoming Festivals. With honor and great pleasure Athens Video Art Festival 08 presents the Department of Visual Arts and Art Sciences (University of Ioannina), the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication (Aegean University) and the Department of Art and Design (Bremen University of Arts).

Η Τέχνη, η Μουσική, το Σχέδιο και η Θεωρία είναι ανάμεσα στους τομείς της Ανώτατης Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών Βρέμης. Ο παραγωγικός διάλογος ανάμεσα στα ποικίλα μαθήματα των σπουδών είναι ένας βασικός στόχος στη σχολή, η οποία έχει περίπου 900 τακτικούς και 600 μερικώς ενταχθέντες φοιτητές. Ο Τομέας της Τέχνης και Σχεδίου χωρίζεται σε τρεις κλάδους σπουδών. Καλές Τέχνες, Ψηφιακά Μέσα και Εφαρμοσμένο Σχέδιο. Δουλεύοντας ως λέκτορας στα Ψηφιακά Μέσα, ο Joachim Hofmann και μια ομάδα φοιτητών το 2003 δημιούργησε το Χscreen, ως μια πλατφόρμα για να παρουσιάζουν έργα φτιαγμένα από τους φοιτητές στους διάφορους κλάδους παρουσιάσεων μέσα και έξω από το HFK. Τα videos που έχουνε επιλεχθεί για το Athens Video Art Festival είναι μια μίξη από στυλ και είδη, με κεντρικό άξονα τα έργα που δεν χρειάζονται επεξηγήσεις. Ορισμένα από αυτά έχουνε παραχθεί τα τελευταία έτη, άλλα είναι από

το πιο πρόσφατα ολοκληρωμένο εξάμηνο της σχολής ή φτιάχτηκαν στα πολύ γρήγορα filmfestival workshops, μια άλλη δραστηριότητα του Xscreen. Παρόλο που υπάρχουν μεγάλες δόσεις Πληροφορικής και άλλα θέματα στα μαθήματα των ψηφιακών μέσων, στα οποία έχουνε παραχθεί τα περισσότερα έργα που περιέχονται στο πρόγραμμα αυτό, πάντα υπάρχουνε φοιτητές που επιτυγχάνουν εξαιρετικά αποτελέσματα με video που ποικίλουν από πειραματικά και ποίηση μέχρι μικρά documentaries και φανταστικού σεναρίου μικρού μήκους.

Art, Music, Design and Theory are the sections at the University of the arts Bremen. A productive dialog amongst the diverse courses of studies is one major aim at the school that has about 900 regular and another 600 partly matriculated Students.

The Department of Arts and Design is divided into three branches of Study. Fine Art, Digital Media and Integrated Design. Moving

images are subject of classes in all three departments.

Working as a lecturer at Digital Media, Joachim Hofmann and a Group of Students in 2003 founded Xscreen as a platform to present film shows of works made by Students at the diverse branches for presentations within and outside the HFK. The films selected for the Athens Video Art Festival are a mixture of styles and genres, with the focus on works that need no translation.

Some have been produced in recent years, others are from the just completed semester, or were made at the very fast filmfestival workshops, another activity within Xscreen.

Although there is a large amount of Informatics and other topics in digital media courses, where most of the films in this program were produced, there always are students that achieve outstanding works from experimental and poetry to short documentary and fictional short films. | 171|

ΥΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΑΙΓΙΔΑ:

Πανεπιστήμιο Αιγαίου Τμήμα Πολιτισμικής Τεχνολογίας και Επικοινωνίας Tο Τμήμα Πολιτισμικής Τεχνολογίας και Επικοινωνίας (ΤΠΤΕ) ιδρύθηκε το 2000. Εδρεύει στην πόλη της Μυτιλήνης και δέχεται υποψηφίους από το 1ο και 4ο επιστημονικό πεδίο. Μετά από απόφαση του Υπουργείου Παιδείας (2002), συμπεριλαμβάνεται στα Τμήματα εκείνα που το πρόγραμμα σπουδών τους αφορά στην Επιστήμη των Τεχνολογιών Πληροφορικής και Επικοινωνιών. THE DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION The Department of Cultural Technology and Communication was founded in 2000. It belongs to the School of Social Sciences, University of the Aegean, and is located in Mytilene. The Department accepts students from the 1st and the 4th scientific fields. Its mission is to educate people capable of responding to the contemporary needs of society and economy that derive from the rapid development of Informatics and Communication Technologies. Studies in the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication last for eight (8) semesters. During the first four (4) semesters, the Core Courses cover the scientific field of Cultural Studies, with

a special emphasis on Culture, Multiculturalism, Communication and Cultural Promotion and Administration. In the 5th semester the students select and attend one of the four (4) offered Study Divisions.

The Department of Cultural Technology and Communication has initiated an interdisciplinary graduate program in the field of Cultural Informatics leading to a Master of Sciences in Cultural Informatics. The program specializes on the creation of virtual museums and the use of multimedia tools. This program provides both theoretical expertise and handson experience through seminars and well-equipped laboratories.

Τμήμα Πλαστικών Τεχνών και Επιστημών Πανεπιστημίου Ιωαννίνων Το Τμήμα Πλαστικών Τεχνών και Επιστημών της Τέχνης αποτελεί ανεξάρτητο Τμήμα του Πανεπιστημίου Ιωαννίνων. Λειτουργεί από το ακαδημαϊκό έτος 2000 – 2001. Σκοπός του είναι να καλλιεργήσει και να προωθήσει τις εικαστικές τέχνες και τη σχετική θεωρητική και πρακτική έρευνα αλλά και να παράσχει στους φοιτητές του τα απαραίτητα εφόδια για την επαγγελματική τους σταδιοδρομία. Το Τμήμα στοχεύει στο να συμβάλλει σε μια γενικότερη αισθητική Παιδεία αλλά και στην τοπική πολιτιστική ζωή. Η σύγχρονη τέχνη γενικά έχει την τάση να αψηφάει τα γεωγραφικά σύνορα. Αυτό παρατηρείται ακόμη πιο έντονα τα τελευταία χρόνια, που τα περισσότερα θέματα φαίνονται να είναι οικουμενικά – καλλιτέχνες απ’ όλο τον κόσμο μοιράζονται κοινές σκέψεις, προβληματισμούς και προσδοκίες. Αυτό είναι προφανές από το γεγονός πώς καλλιτέχνες απ’ όλο τον κόσμο συμμετέχουν σε καλλιτεχνικούς θεσμούς και φεστιβάλ και επικοινωνούν χρησιμοποιώντας κοινούς κώδικες, κάνοντας τις διοργανώσεις αυτές πραγματικά διεθνείς. Τα οφέλη από την συνεργασία των διαφόρων μερών στον τομέα των ψηφιακών τεχνών είναι προφανή. Contemporary art in general tends to defy geographical boundaries. This is even truer in recent years, since most issues appear to be universal – artists around the globe share similar thoughts, considerations and expectations. This is evident from the fact that artists from different countries participate in art fairs and festivals and communicate using similar codes, making these festivals truly international.

The benefits of collaborations between parts in the field of digital arts are evident. Each part is called to play a part in the promotion of digital culture on a universal scale, sharing ideas and visions, giving and receiving, evolving.

Bill Viola is a true original whose videotapes and installations convey great emotional power through moving images that are sublime and powerful in their reflection on the human condition. A pioneer in the use of video he is internationally recognized for his transformation of the moving image into an art form that is in dialogue with the great traditions of world art. John Hanhardt will reflect on Bill Viola’s career through a screening of excerpts from his videotapes featuring Hatsu Yume (First Dream) (1981) and The Passing (1991),

as well as documentation of his major installations including The Sleep of Reason (1988), Stations (1994), The Crossing (1996), Going Forth By Day (2002), and recent art projects including the Tristan Project and the Passions series.

John G. Hanhardt has a long career representing film and the media arts in museum exhibitions and collections. He was Curator and Head of the Film and Video Department at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1974 – 1996), Senior Curator for Film and Media Arts at the Guggenheim Museum (1996-2006) and is currently Consulting Senor Curator for Film and Media Arts at the Smithsonian Ameri-

can Art Museum. He has featured Bill Viola in many exhibitions and commissioned a number of installations. Among the exhibitions are seven Whitney Museum Biennials; the exhibition Bill Viola: Fire, Water Breath (1997) at the Guggenheim Museum SoHo and the large scale installation Going Forth By Day (2002) which was commissioned for the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin.

ment of video as a vital form of contemporary art, and in so doing has helped to greatly expand its scope in terms of technology, content, and historical reach. For over 35 years he has created videotapes, architectural video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, flat panel video pieces, and works for television broadcast. Viola’s video installations—total environments that envelop the viewer in image and sound—employ state-of-the-art technologies and are distinguished by their precision and direct simplicity. They are shown in museums and galleries worldwide and are found in many distinguished collections. His single channel videotapes have been widely broadcast and presented cinematically, while his writings have been extensively published, and translated for international readers.

Viola uses video to explore the phenomena of sense perception as an avenue to self-knowledge. His works focus on universal human experiences—birth, death, the unfolding of consciousness—and have roots in both Eastern and Western art as well as spiritual traditions, including Zen Buddhism, Islamic Sufism, and

Christian mysticism. Using the inner language of subjective thoughts and collective memories, his videos communicate to a wide audience, allowing viewers to experience the work directly, and in their own personal way.

Bill Viola received his BFA in Experimental Studios from Syracuse University in 1973. During the 1970s he lived for 18 months in Florence, Italy, as technical director of production for Art/Tapes/22, one of the first video art studios in Europe, and then traveled widely to study and record traditional performing arts in the Solomon Islands, Java, Bali, and Japan. From 1973 to 1980 he performed with avant-garde composer David Tudor as a member of his Rainforest ensemble. In 1977 Viola was invited to show his videotapes at La Trobe University (Melbourne, Australia) by cultural arts director Kira Perov who, a year later, joined him in New York where they married and began a lifelong collaboration working and traveling together. In 1980, they lived in Japan for a year and a half on a Japan/U.S. cultural exchange fellowship where they

studied Buddhism with Zen Master Daien Tanaka and became the first artist-in-residence at Sony Corporation’s Atsugi research laboratories.

Viola and Perov have recorded mirages in the Sahara desert, studied animal consciousness at the San Diego Zoo, made a photographic study of Native American rock art sites, traveled for 5 months in the American Southwest recording nocturnal desert landscapes with special cameras, and most recently went to Dharamsala, India to record a prayer blessing with the Dalai Lama.

Three major installations and videotapes were shown in New York at the Museum of Modern Art in 1987, and Viola’s first large exhibition of works toured six venues in Europe beginning in 1992, organized by Kira Perov and the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.

Viola represented the U.S. at the 46th Venice Biennale in 1995, premiering an ensemble of five new installation works titled Buried Secrets. In 1997 the Whitney Museum of American Art organized Bill Viola: A 25-Year Survey, an exhibition that traveled for two years to six museums in the United States and Europe. Viola was

invited to be a Scholar at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles in 1998, and later that year created a suite of three new video pieces for the rock group Nine Inch Nails’ world tour. His 1994 video Déserts, created to accompany the music composition of the same name by Edgard Varèse, premiered at the Wien Modern, Konzerthaus, Vienna with Peter Eötvös conducting the Ensemble Modern, and has since been presented by many other orchestras in live performance. In 2002, Viola completed his most ambitious project, Going Forth By Day, a five part projected digital “fresco” cycle in High-Definition video, commissioned by the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin and the Guggenheim Museum, New York. Bill Viola: The Passions was exhibited at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles in 2003 then traveled to the National Gallery, London, the Fondación “La Caixa” in Madrid and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. One of the largest exhibition of Viola’s installations to date, Bill Viola: Hatsu-Yume (First Dream) (October 26, 2006-January 8, 2007), drew over 340,000 visitors to the Mori Art Mu-

seum in Tokyo. A reduced version of the exhibition travels to the Hyogo Prefectural Museum in Kobe, Japan, where it opens on January 23, 2007.

In 2004 Viola began collaborating with director Peter Sellars, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and executive producer Kira Perov to create a new production of Richard Wagner’s opera, Tristan und Isolde, which was presented in project form by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in December 2004. The complete opera received its world premiere at the Opéra National de Paris, Bastille in April 2005 with a reprise in November. The concert version will be presented once more at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles in April 2007, and at Avery Fisher Hall, New York, in May 2007, produced by the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

transmediale Festival for art and digital culture Berlin Τransmediale is a forum of communication for artists, media workers and a broad public interested in the arts. transmediale includes exhibitions, conferences, live performances, artist presentations and a variety of fringe events throughout Berlin. transmediale was founded in 1988 as a video art festival and has taken place annually, in Berlin, ever since.

First conceived in close relation to the Berlinale film festival, the festival changed its name from ‘VideoFest’ to ‘transmediale’ in 1997/98, thus reflecting the fact that its programmatic scope had broadened to encompass a wide range of multimediarelated art forms. Curare Art Movement in Athens 2008 Το Curare Art Movement είναι μια Σουηδική μη κερδοσκοπική οργάνωση, που εργάζεται κυρίως με τη σύγχρονη τέχνη στα πλαίσια των νέων μέσων. Δουλεύοντας ως ελεύθεροι Επιμελητές Εκθέσεων, συνεχώς σαυναισθανόμαστε και αναλύουμε τον περιβάλλοντα κόσμο έτσι ώστε να υλοποιούμε εκθέσεις που κεντρίζουν το ενδιαφέρον της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας. Ο κόσμος της παγκόσμιας τέχνης σήμερα μας επιτρέπει να εργαστούμε στον τομέα της τέχνης πέρα από τα σύνορα, χωρίς μεγάλα οικονομικά μέσα. Ένα άλλο μεγάλο ζητούμενο μας είναι να αναπτύξουμε και να διεξάγουμε μια συζήτηση για το ρόλο των Επιμελητών. Το να παρουσιάσεις τους καλλιτέχνες μιας ολόκληρης χώρας δεν είναι εύκολη αποστολή και σε καμία περίπτωση δεν θα επιχειρήσουμε κάτι τέτοιο. Curare Art Movement is a Swedish non-profit organization working mainly with contemporary art within new media. Working as freelancing art curators, we constantly sense and analyze the surrounding world in order to compile exhibitions that interests our contemporary time. The global art world of today allows us to work with art across the borders, without great financial means. One of our other main interests is to develop and conduct a debate about the conception of the curator role.

To represent the artists of a whole country is not easily done, and therefore nothing we even try to accomplish. Our representation of Swedish art lies in us carefully searching and collecting the most interesting art for the specific occasion. Our overall aim is simply to always create a unique context for the art experience.

At Athens Video Art Festival 2008 Curare Art Movement present some of the best contemporary Swedish video art. We also present the Swedish artists duo Misplay, who live in Athens will perform their interactive sound installation, developed specifically for the festival.

Play in Reverse Η διαδραστική Εγκατάσταση Play in Reverse είναι μια κούνια όπου εκείνος που κάθεται, κουνιέται και ελέγχει ένα αρχείο ήχου μέσα από τις κινησεις του. Όταν η κούνια κινείται μπροστά ο ήχος παίζει κανονικά, ενώ όταν η κούνια κινείται προς τα πίσω ο ίδιος ήχος παίζεται ανάποδα. Το Play in Reverse είναι κατα μία έννοια η ταλάντευση ανάμεσα στην παράδοση και την ανάκτηση του ελέγχου. Η πρόθεση της σύλληψης είναι να εξερευνήσει τον πληροφοριακό και μυστικιστικό χαρακτήρα του ήχου – την ουσία δηλαδή του εφήμερου. Το άτομο που χρησιμοποιεί την κούνια έχει τον έλεγχο του ήχου την ίδια στιγμή που ελέγχεται από την ίδια την κούνια καθώς κινείται εμπρός και πίσω σαν σε μια αφήγηση. Οι ήχοι καταγράφονται επί τόπου. Το κοινό αντιλαμβάνεται την ταχύτητα της κούνιας την ίσια στιγμή που ακούν ήχους καταγεγραμένους από τους δρόμους της Αθήνας.

The interactive installation Play in Reverse is a swing where the one who is swinging controls a sound file through his/her movements. When the swing is moved forward a sound file is played out. The same sound file is played out in reverse when the swing moves backwards.

Play in Reverse is in some parts about the tension between surrendering control and yet being in control. The intention of the concept is to explore sounds informational and mystical character - the substantiality of the transient. The person who uses the swing is in control over the soundscape, at the same time as he or she is controlled by the swing, as it goes back and forth in a narrative. The sounds are recorded on location. The audience feels the speed of the swing at the same time as they hear sounds recorded of the streets of Athens. | 191|

Music, movement, image and experimentation are inextricable elements of a video work. Sound completes the visual part and contributes to the execution of the artist’s vision for his work as a whole. After the video projections, Athens Video Art Festival 08 will present every day a complete musical show in the form of concerts. Pop Eye Η αγαπημένη μουσική των Pop Eye είναι … η ποπ! Οι ίδιοι περιγράφουν την μουσική τους ως pop, με πολλά electro στοιχεία, κιθάρες που θυμίζουν Joy Division και Cure, αλλά και Belle and Sebastian, πιάνο παιχνιδίσματα όπως εκείνα του Moby, μελαγχολικά μοτίβα όπως εκείνα των Στέρεο Νόβα, αλλά και κάτι από το λυρισμό του Μάνου Χατζιδάκι. Έχουν προκαλέσει αίσθηση στην Αθηναϊκή σκηνή, ενώ ετοιμάζονται να κυκλοφορήσουν το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ.

Pop Eye’s favorite music is…pop! They describe their music as pop with electro elements, guitars that bring Joy Division and Cure to mind as well as Belle and Sebastian, piano playing like Moby, melancholic loops like Stereo Nova but also have some of the lyricism of Manos Xatzidakis.
