With the use of water interactions, the role of natural aspects in the daily lives of South LA residents was re-envisioned. This was made possible with the use of water. Incorperating a bridge; allowing a form of play for people and educating them about ecosystems and the environment.

environmental design, has emphasis through its fundamental theories and objectives. Methods of notation, observation, diagramming, measurement, and effective communication allow designers to create. The integration of manual and digital techniques also allow for cohesiveness and impactful design solutions.

Deck Post and Beams Deck Joist
Designing and detailing a wood deck structure is essential in the preparation of a landscape construction site plan. Fundamentals of the deck structure and functions were explored through this project. Through design and manipulation, harmonization was formed to allow people to enjoy the beauty of the environment.

Rialto High School

As a team, we decided that the inclusion of native California plants, proper paths for circulation, and an increase of green spaces, as well as a potential inclusion for cultural art and displays, will create a safer and more relaxing space for students and will aid in creating a sense of community and belonging.
Rialto High School is located in San Bernardino County, which is highly populated by industrial factories, warehouses, and facilities, as well as trucking routes and other commercial practices. Due to this factor, the residencies of this area appear very lacking in a feel of community and an overal safe environment. The high school, in particular, did not offer much to its students, as the ambience felt very authoritative and constraining. After our visit to Rialto High School, we gathered many thoughts of how this landscape could be improved and potentially serve as an area for comfort, education, and encouragement for its students.
From our personal insight, we discovered a concern for public health and safety issues due to rising temperatures from climate change, pollution because of surrounding industrialized areas, and a lack of green spaces for community physical and mental wellbeing. Our analysis also reveals the need for drought tolerant and seasonal plants due to the increase of evapotranspiration over time due to climate change. Applying a new diverse plant palette, suitable for the region’s soil, could achieve student’s and staff’s awareness and education on the local climate and biodiversity. Additionally, based on in-person interactions, we noticed a problematic circulation and high traffic routes for large amounts of students to commute simultaneously. The use of shading and increased greenery could help regulate circulation and further create cooling canopies and spaces for individuals to gather.
As a team, we decided that the inclusion of native California plants, proper paths for circulation, and an increase of green spaces, as well as a potential inclusion for cultural art and displays, will create a safer and more relaxing space for students and will aid in creating a sense of community and belonging.

Located in Rialto High School, the creation of a butterfly and pollination garden was essential to reimagine the space for the students and environment. With the use of pollen-producing plants, it permits more animals and creates habitats for species that are declining. This also allows students to appreciate and be educated on the connections in this naturesque scene.
