Grace Challinor, General Manager

How did you get the theatre bug?

I actually started my career with ATG working in their call centre, in London, way back in 2004. When I was there, I was offered a chance to work backstage at The Lion King and jumped at it! When did you join the Stoke team?

I moved back to Stoke to become Stage Door receptionist in 2006, becoming Stage Door supervisor in 2011, and Environmental Ambassador. In 2014 I started training as the venue administrator, as well as duty managing during shows and some backstage work in my spare time.

Hello From... Cheryl Taylor, Deputy General Manager Victoria Hall

How long have you been in your current post?

In December I became the Deputy General Manager of The Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall. It’s been an exciting journey and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, the Olivier and Tony® Award-winning West End and Broadway show is coming to Stoke-on-Trent this April! Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom. Along the way she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, including countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Take Good Care of My Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might as Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof and Locomotion. EDITORIAL The Carole King musical Beautiful uncovers the journey of the iconic singer-songwriter from her humble New York roots to global superstardom. The show has proved a huge success on both sides of the Atlantic, running simultaneously on Broadway and in the West End for more than two years. Now UK fans can see the muchacclaimed show outside London, thanks to a nationwide tour throughout 2018. We caught up with leading lady Bronté Barbé to talk about playing Carole and about her own journey from television contestant in the search for Dorothy in Over the Rainbow.

Photography by Craig Sugnen

How did you first hear that you’d got the role of Carole King in the tour of Beautiful? Oh my goodness, that’s a good question. My agent called me actually, and started singing down the phone. He sang, “You’ve got to get up every morning,” and then said, “Do you want to be Carole King?” It was bonkers. I just couldn’t believe it.

A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8

Were you familiar with the show before then? I went to see it about four months ago for the first time. I’d been meaning to see it for ages and I’ve listened to the soundtrack a number of times because I love the music of Carole King. I was blown away by it. I absolutely loved it, but I never thought I’d even be considered as Carole. What is it about the show that makes it so special? It’s the music, because her songs are so iconic,

musical by name but I love the way it’s set out. I love the way the songs are performed. I think it’s fantastic. What’s the most difficult thing about the show for you? I’d probably say pacing myself. Because the songs are so satisfying to sing and because of the way it’s structured – we start at Carnegie Hall and then we go back in time – I get very over-excited in the first song because I love it. It’s ‘So Far Away’ and it’s so nice to sing – luckily, it’s not a massive belter – but then we obviously go straight back to when she’s 16, so I always need to remember to pace myself. How are audiences reacting to the show? They’re amazing. We’ve had a lot of standing ovations. I love the energy at the end of the show – finishing where we do, it’s on a real high, which is nice. What’s your favourite Carole King song? That is really hard. I love ‘You’ve Got a Friend’. I just think the words are fantastic. What’s it been like since you were one of the potential Dorothy’s in Over the Rainbow? BB: It’s bizarre because it’s seven years since Over the Rainbow and I feel like I have grown up so much since then. When I think of being in Macclesfield and doing am-dram and dreaming about doing musicals, I am chuffed with the way the last few years have panned out.

but also it’s the style in which it’s produced. The writing is amazing, the script is fantastic and it is very much a play with song, I think. It’s a jukebox

As a culturally rich and creatively pioneering city, Stoke-on-Trent is famous across the world for its ceramics heritage. But as the television presenter Nick Hancock reminded me recently, there is still more to see.As he put it, this city is like the Staffordshire Hoard: beautiful, full of creativity, under-appreciated and undiscovered for far too long.

It’s Good to Talk

This is why it’s so important that we keep the momentum generated by the City of Culture bid going. We have a wealth of arts and cultural organisations consistently punching above their weight and we need to recognise them all. This range has been demonstrated in the quality, ambition and reach of Appetite, the outstanding Creative People and Places programme, which has introduced more and more people to world-class culture and art.

Paul Williams, Chairman of Stoke-on-Trent Cultural Destinations, discusses moving forward after the SOT2021 bid. It was shortly after the Ambassador Theatre Group declared its ambition to become the world’s number one live theatre company in 1992, that Bob Hoskins fronted an ad campaign reminding people, ‘it’s good to talk’. BT’s successful marketing campaign focused on the role communication plays in people’s lives – and set out to help them re-engage with each other. It was a similar story with Stoke-on-Trent’s bid to become UK City of Culture. We may not have won the bid but there’s no doubt that the campaign has been an extremely positive experience – and one that will shape our future. Our ambitious, exciting and compelling plans kick-started an important cultural conversation. They reminded people that art is for everyone and that this is a city with culture in abundance.

amongst local people, and helped us to develop a clear set of cultural aspirations for Stoke going forward. As part of this, a new cultural strategy is about to be launched, setting out the City Council’s intention to deliver a £52 million cultural investment programme including redevelopment of the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, and the city’s Central Library. Gilbert Adair’s assertion that, ‘culture, like God and politics, is everywhere’ is further evidenced by the city’s new Cultural Forum and the creation of a Cultural Education Partnership. The bid process – and new sense of civic confidence – has allowed us to celebrate our rich cultural heritage too. We can rightly claim to be a city that has been shaped by the business of culture for almost three hundred years. We are a city that makes art from dirt and exports it around the world – and that’s something we can be proud of.

“And there is a lot more to come!” Our cultural profile has been further strengthened by access to our award-winning theatres and museums, contemporary and immersive arts events, and a growing reputation for live music and performing arts, literature, digital technology and gaming. Later this year, North Staffordshire hosts the iconic ceramic poppies installation at Middleport Pottery and celebrates Philip Astley, the father of the modern circus in Newcastle (an area recently designated as one of six national ‘Cities of Circus’). The British Ceramics Biennial and B-Arts will join the New Vic Theatre on the Arts Council’s National Portfolio, providing them with four years of funding to deliver cultural and out-reach programmes.

The bid has been transformative and re-energising. It fired up a renewed sense of ambition and self-confidence

cultural tourism offer and boost the visitor economy.

The three-year Visit England and Arts Council-funded Cultural Destinations programme is another key scheme and will bring key partners together to develop the

There is bricks and mortar work happening too. Building will shortly commence on the new, four-star Hilton Garden hotel development in the Cultural Quarter. It will fuel a booming night time economy and new artisan coffee shops, eateries, restaurants and bars in the Piccadilly area, adjacent to our Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall buildings. The Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall are not just at the heart of the Cultural Quarter, they are vital organs with a key role to play in the economic and cultural wellbeing of

Since then, they have continued to facilitate dialogue about the value of art and culture in bringing communities together; developing new partnerships, boosting wellbeing, building local pride and changing outdated perceptions, to attract more visitors and raise the city’s profile.

Screen and stage actor, Freddie Jones adds that for a culture to flourish you need a warm climate, a great tradition and the warm embrace of a people ripe to awaken, a people fortified for a spring renewal – and that’s the people of dear Stoke-on-Trent.

the region. As with most successful theatres and venues, they are remarkably good at creating and staging performances as well as recognising the importance of audience diversity. To remain relevant to and engage with their local communities they also provide an array of school visits, rehearsal facilities, drama workshops, dance classes, function suites, as well as interactive experiences and participatory programmes. Their Creative Learning department is an integral part of this, providing meaningful opportunities to young people in Stoke-on-Trent and inspiring a new generation of artists and audiences. Thanks to our City of Culture experience, in 2018 it feels like the arts are being recognised as a key ingredient for Stoke-on-Trent’s future – and not just the ‘icing on the cake’. As we continue to tell and develop our own amazing story, let’s remember, it really is good to talk.

THE DRIFTERS

DANIEL O’DONNELL

These terrific tales are woven together with live music, puppetry and a whole host of colourful characters from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s best-loved titles: Tiddler, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant in Town and A Squash and a Squeeze. ★★★★ ‘A DELIGHT FROM START TO FINISH!’ – Time Out

The Drifters are back on the road performing their classic hits from the last six decades! The Drifters have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, performed for the President and were named in Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time.

One of the nation’s most loved entertainers, she came to our screens 20 years ago. A phenomenal singer with a stunning band and knock out production. Jane will bring audiences to their feet with an evening of music and laughter. Not to be missed!

Daniel O’Donnell is the only artist to score at least one hit in the UK album charts every year since 1988, an unprecedented and unbroken 30 year span and in doing so, he has outshone everyone from Michael Jackson and Madonna to U2 and the Rolling Stones.

The world’s foremost tribute to Jeff Lynne and The Electric Light Orchestra. With a sensational string section, a stunning light show and large screen projection. Come along and enjoy this incredible live show which takes you on a magical musical journey through time.

Pop in and see Joe Lycett on his brand new stand-up tour, where he’ll be sharing jokes, paintings and some of the pathetic internet trolling he’s been up to recently. As seen on 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, QI and The Royal Variety Performance. Ages 15+

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

Have the time of your life with the ultimate live experience: Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘STANDING OVATION MUSICAL’, as inevitably it ‘BRINGS THE AUDIENCE CHEERING TO ITS FEET AND ROARING ITS APPROVAL’ – The Daily Mail.

Full of passion and romance, heart-pounding music and sensationally sexy dancing, the record-breaking production is even better than before in this new tour. The classic story of Baby and Johnny returns, following three blockbuster West End runs and three hit UK tours, featuring the much-loved songs Hungry Eyes, Hey! Baby, Do You Love Me? and the heart-stopping (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life.

The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.
