The King and I was a Broadway Musical hit for Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1951, winning a Tony Award for best musical.

It features well known and much loved songs such as I Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, Hello Young Lovers and the hauntingly beautiful and emotive Something Wonderful. The story begins in Siam in 1862 when British widow Anna Leonowens and her young son Louis arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many wives and children. Although initially aghast at the regime in the Palace, Anna recognises that the King is a good man and agrees to help him change his image (the West regards him as a barbarian), whilst keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values. Their understanding and respect grows into what becomes a truly unique love story.

Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicar’s Madama Butterfly has been a firm favourite since it was first staged in 2000.

TRANSFORMING THEATRE ROYAL GLASGOW FOR GENERATIONS TO COME Over the coming months, you’ll see some changes at Theatre Royal Glasgow which we hope will make your visits to the theatre even more enjoyable.

Work is well underway to improve the theatre’s public spaces by building a dramatic new entrance that will house fantastic facilities and greatly improve access to all levels. With new lifts, spacious foyers, better bars, more toilets and improved air-flow in the auditorium, we’re bringing the theatre firmly into the 21st century.

The work will be complete in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and the theatre will be open as usual except for a short period from February to April 2014 to enable the final joining up of the new extension with the current theatre.

During Summer 2013, the seats in the Stalls and Dress Circle have been re-positioned. We hope you enjoy the improved sightlines, leg room and comfort.
