CHAPTER 1: HERITAGE IN MOTION

''The precision, craftsmanship, and iconic designs, expressing the timeless essence of watchmaking, are elements I strive to incorporate into my art. The complexity inherent in the composition of a watch's mechanism is akin to the harmony I seek in my pieces, offering an unparalleled perspective and depth to each story I aim to convey. ''

Dubai, Burj Al Arab, Racing of the Dhows Al Gaffal Dhow Race

The traditional dhow dates back to the days of pearl diving, with the vessels playing an integral part in the development of Dubai as an international trading port. Seeing the large 60ft dhows sailing majestically across the waters in the sunshine as part of the race is an unforgettable sight.

A highlight of Dubai's event calendar, the Al Gaffal Dhow Race is a long-distance sailing competitions that takes place in the spring in Dubai. Held since 1991, the race was established to honour the nation's maritime heritage. Many Emirati families trace their roots to the pearl trade with ancestors who were divers, dhow captains or pearl merchants, and the event celebrates their history.

In a city that is home to over 200 nationalities, it is rare to find an event reserved almost exclusively for locals. The fact that every crew member in the Al Gaffal Dhow Race must be an Emirati makes it a truly special event. This celebration of culture is also supported by royalty: His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Finance Minister and Deputy Ruler of Dubai, is the race's patron.

The dhows follow a historical route, showing off some of the most impressive parts of the Dubai coastline. Starting at Sir Bu Nair Island, the race heads east for 23 nautical miles to a mandatory checkpoint at Moon Island, before turning southeast to the finish line at the Burj Al Arab hotel. This happens to be the same route taken by pearl divers returning from long trips at sea. The term Al Gaffal translates from Arabic as 'the return'.

The artwork's harmonious blend of blue, white, and brown tones evokes the vastness of the ocean, the purity of the sails, and the warmth of the wooden hulls. Each brushstroke captures the subtle variations of blue, infusing the waves with movement and vitality.

Paul Newman, Le Mans Race 1979

Porsche 935

The Porsche 935, marking an indomitable legacy of over 150 worldwide race victories until 1984, remains a cornerstone in Porsche's prodigious history. This powerhouse offered the celebrated actor and racer, Paul Newman, a memorable debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 9-10, 1979.

This exquisite composition salutes the iconic 1979 Le Mans race, highlighting Paul Newman's blazing red Porsche 935 at the heart of its visual narrative. A remarkable historical footnote of this car is its 1980 campaign sponsorship by Apple Computers, an unprecedented alliance between racing and technology, rendering it the only race car ever to be backed by tech giants. Continuing its triumphant journey, the Porsche 935 clinched victory at the 1981 24 Hours of Daytona post its Le Mans exploit.

Beyond being a celebrated Hollywood star, Paul Newman transcended his fame into the realm of horology in 2017 when his 1968 Rolex Daytona set a record at a Phillips auction house in New York, selling for a staggering $17.8 Million in a span of 12 minutes, thereby establishing a new benchmark for a wristwatch at auction.

The term "iconic" often risks dilution, but when applied to the Rolex "Paul Newman" Daytona, it faithfully embodies its standing. The filming of Newman's debut racing movie, "Winning," catalyzed demand for the early "exotic dial" Daytonas, overwhelming Rolex dealers with its popularity. Advancing several decades, the Rolex Daytona has reached legendary status, becoming one of the world's most sought-after chronographs. Newman's personal Daytona, a gift from his wife, Joanne Woodward, carries a heartfelt inscription - "Drive Carefully. Me."

The "Paul Newman, Le Mans Race 1979" artwork, being the solitary piece in existence, signifies a true collector's treasure—an extraordinary chance to possess a piece merging the vibrant spirit of Paul Newman, the electrifying thrill of Le Mans, and the enduring allure of the legendary Daytona.
