Nos últimos seis anos, percorri o equivalente a duas circum-navegações à Terra. Mergulhei na Humanidade e nos produtos das suas culturas. Vi beleza e podridão como nunca achei possível.

Todas estas viagens empalidecem perante a mais profunda de todas: a jornada em direção ao Eu, a navegação pelos mares do inconsciente e da memória. Uma viagem infinitamente mais dura; a perdição e a salvação amalgamadas.

Houve alturas em que não soube quando uma acabava e começava a outra.

In the last six years, I have travelled the equivalent to two circum-navigations of the Earth. I dove in Mankind and the products of its cultures. I have seen beauty and decay as I have never thought possible.

All these travels pale beyond the deepest of them all: the journey in the direction of the Self, the navigation through the seas of unconscious and memory.

A journey that is infinitely harder; perdition and salvation amalgamated.

There were times when I didn’t know where one ended and the other one began.

As filosofias e práticas espirituais do Oriente mudaram a minha percepção do mundo e tornaram-se no campo de extração de ideias para a minha arte.

Estas ideias são construídas através do sampling e remix do meu próprio arquivo.

Um Atlas é uma coleção de mapas tradicionalmente compilados em forma de livro, mas também encontrado em formato multimédia.

Pode mostrar características geográficas e fronteiras políticas, mas muitas vezes representa estatísticas sociais, religiosas e económicas.

A cartografia é o estudo e prática de construir representações da Terra sobre uma superfície bidimensional.

O Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Teatro do Globo Terrestre) é considerado o primeiro atlas moderno. Foi escrito por Abraham Ortelius e impresso pela primeira vez em 1570 em Antuérpia, Bélgica.

O atlas praticamente não tinha mapas feitos por Ortelius, mas apresentava cinquenta e três conjuntos de mapas de outros mestres com informação das fontes. Aquele que é considerado o primeiro atlas moderno já

An Atlas is a collection of maps traditionally complied in form of a book, but it can also be found in multimedia format. It may display geographical characteristics and political borders, but many times it represents social religious and economic statistics.

Cartography is the study and practice of constructing representations of the Earth over a two-dimensional surface.

The Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theater of the Terrestrial Globe) is considered to be the first modern atlas. It was written by Abraham Ortelius and printed for the first time in the year 1570, in Antwerp, Belgium.

The atlas practically did not contain maps made by Ortelius, but presented fifty-three sets of maps authored by other masters with referenced sources.

That which is considered the first modern atlas already announced questions that are intrinsic to contemporary art:

A expressão Gabinete de Curiosidades designa os lugares onde, durante a época das grandes explorações e descobrimentos dos séculos XVI e XVII, se albergavam coleções de uma multiplicidade de objetos raros ou estranhos dos três ramos da Biologia considerados na época: animal, vegetal e mineral; assim como objetos produzidos pela mão humana vistos como exóticos ou surpreendentes.

Em geral, os gabinetes de curiosidades eram uma exposição de curiosidades e achados procedentes de novas explorações. Os gabinetes são parte de uma história maior: a história de como descobrimos o mundo e como viemos a entender o nosso lugar nele. Viajar alimentou o desejo de possuir coisas estranhas que emergiram de lugares longínquos e colecionadores do Renascimento atravessaram tempo e espaço para tomarem posse

During the age of the great explorations and discoveries of the 16th and 17th centuries, the expression Cabinet of Curiosities referred to the places where were stored collections containing a multiplicity of rare or strange objects of the three branches of Biology considered at the time: animal, vegetable and mineral; as well as objects produced by human hand that were perceived as exotic or surprising.

In general, the cabinets were an exhibition of curiosities and findings proceeding from new explorations. They are part of a larger narrative: the story of how we have discovered the world and how we have come to understand our place in it.

Travelling fed the desire of possessing strange things that emerged from far away places and Renaissance collectors traveled through time and space to acquire the most assorted unusual objects.

The first collectors were monarchs and aristocrats, but the craze spread to the

Os primeiros colecionadores eram monarcas e aristocratas, mas a mania espalhou-se à classe média, padres e académicos que, tendo menos dinheiro que os supracitados, se concentravam em objetos naturais e exóticos menos dispendiosos, coisas que podiam obter de mercadores e viajantes. Havia colecionadores que tinham tantos objectos e gabinetes que enchiam salas inteiras. Chamavam a estas salas Wonder Rooms ou Wunderkammer. Estas salas eram microcosmos do mundo, universos em miniatura.

Ao dispôr items lado a lado, os colecionadores estavam a tentar organizar o mundo e compreendê-lo de forma mais profunda. A forma como era exibida uma coleção dependia da história que o colecionar desejava contar — o tipo de imagem do mundo ou do próprio colecionador que este queria passar.

Já aqui eram anunciadas as questões da pós-produção, sampling e remix.

Os gabinetes não são apenas um arquivo das viagens e objetos de interesse para o colecionador, mas também um museu da consciência, um mapa da psique do próprio colecionador. O ato de abrir uma gaveta ou uma caixa é muito importante — muitos dos contentores de objetos têm que ser abertos para acedermos ao seu conteúdo. Os grandes gabinetes são os percursores dos museus modernos de arte e arqueologia.

middle class, priests and academics that, having less money than the former, focused on attaining less expensive natural and exotic objects. There were collectors that had so many objects and cabinets that they filled whole rooms. They called these rooms Wonder Rooms or Wunderkammer. These rooms were microcosms of the world, universes in miniature.

By placing items side by side, collectors were trying to organize the world and to understand it in a deeper way. The layout of the collection depended on the story the collector wanted to tell — the kind of image of the world or the collector itself that he wished to get through. Already here were announced subjects such as postproduction, sampling and remix.

The cabinets are not only an archive of travels and objects of interest to the collector, but also a museum of consciousness, a map of the psyche of the collector itself. The act of opening a drawer or a box is very important — many of the containers of the objects must be opened to gain access to its content. The great cabinets of curiosities are precursors of modern art and archaeology museums.

Viajar com o objectivo de recolher informação, o seu processamento e subsequente transformação em obras multifacetadas e híbridas tornou-se no meu modus operandi para produção artística. As imagens, vídeos e sons que utilizo são capturados por mim in situ em diferentes territórios do planeta. Numa primeira fase, o meu atelier cabe numa mochila e nos circuitos de um computador. Na segunda, isolo-me do mundo, analiso, ordeno e transformo obsessivamente.

Comecei a entender o acto de edição — corte e colagem — como construtor de narrativas ficcionais com base na realidade.

Travelling with the objective of collecting information, its processing and subsequent transformation in hybrid and multifaceted works of art has become my modus operandi. The images, videos and sound that I use are captured in situ by myself in different territories of the planet. First, my atelier fits in a backpack and in the circuits of a computer. On a second stage, I retreat from the world, analyzing, ordering and transforming obsessively.

I have come to understand the act of edition — cutting and pasting — as a process for building fictional narratives based on reality.

Se fôssemos capazes de ver a fábula de Borges na qual os cartógrafos do Império desenham um mapa tão detalhado que acaba por cobrir exatamente o próprio território... esta fábula tornou-se verdadeira, e já não possui nada para além docharme discreto de um simulacro de segunda ordem...

São os vestígios do real e não do mapa que persistem aqui e ali nos desertos que já não são os do Império mas os nossos. O próprio deserto do real.

If we were able to see the Borges’ fable in which the cartographers of the Empire draw a map that is so detailed that it ends up covering the territory itself... this fable became true, and does not posess anything beyond the discreet charm of a second order simulacrum...

It is the remains of the real and not of the map that persist here and there in the deserts that are not of the Empire but our own.

With my practice, I want to provoke a reflection on the mysteries and paradoxes of human existence. How to create narratives in a world where they apparently do not exist anymore? What place does spirituality have in our times? The networked society dilutes conflicts, but these conflicts do not cease to exist.

Com a minha prática, quero provocar uma reflexão sobre os mistérios e paradoxos da existência humana. Como criar narrativas num mundo onde elas aparentemente já não existem? Que lugar tem a espiritualidade nos nossos dias? A sociedade em rede dilui conflitos, mas estes conflitos continuam a existir.

I believe that the Age of Information is a never ending source of narrative, aesthetical languages, possibilities, absolute wonders and terrors. We live in a brave new world, an Earth unified by a global digital consciousness, a world without physical barriers, of invisible, never-ending wars and of machines that are capable of dreaming. A present that promises Singularity and the cure to all of Mankind’s ailments.

Acredito que a Idade da Informação é uma fonte inesgotável de narrativa, linguagens estéticas, possibilidades, maravilhas e terrores absolutos.

Vivemos num admirável mundo novo, uma Terra unificada por uma consciência global digital, um mundo sem barreiras físicas, de guerras invisíveis e intermináveis, e de máquinas que são capazes de sonhar.

Um presente que promete a Singularidade e a cura para todas as doenças da Humanidade.

A minha arte funciona como sublimação das minhas experiências pessoais.

Entendo-a como uma forma de auto-compreensão e conhecimento do mundo. O Outro torna-se num espelho para o meu autoconhecimento — a minha prática tornou-se simultaneamente auto-referente e universal.

Reconheci e aceitei a minha condição de nómada.

O meu nomadismo é um nomadismo ideal ou idealizante.

My art works as sublimation of my personal experiences.

I understand it as a form of self-comprehension and understanding of the world. The Other becomes a mirror to understand myself.

My practice has become simultaneously self-referential and universal. I have recognized and accepted my condition of nomad.

My nomadism is of an ideal or idealizing order.

A minha poética nasce da amálgama do ancestral e do contemporâneo: Vedas e tecnologia de meditação colidem com processadores e algoritmos. Entendo a Arte como uma ciência psiconáutica. Procuro uma teoria poética do tudo.

Arquétipos revelam-se através de símbolos, que utilizo no meu trabalho para criar uma multiplicidade de significações.

Símbolos não são factos científicos, permitem pensar sobre eles e possibilitam uma identificação pessoal com os mesmos. São um tipo de conhecimento vivo, com possibilidade de crescimento e mutação. São algo que não está estagnado, que pode ser completado pela experiência de quem os lê.

My poetics is born from the amalgam of ancestal and contemporary: Vedas and meditation technology collide with processors and algorithms. I understand Art as a psychonautic science. I am searching for a poetic theory of everything.

Archetypes reveal themselves through symbols that i use in my work to create a multiplicity of meanings.

Symbols are not scientific facts, they allow to think about them and to create a personal identification with them. They are a kind of living knowledge, that carry the possibility of growth and mutation. They are something that is not stagnant, they can be completed with the experience of the person that reads them.

Os cenários em que se desenrola a ação partilham uma certa qualidade de irrealidade, mistério e dificuldade de localização.

No fundo, parecem cenografias e lugares que não são reais. Desterritorializadas, estas regiões aparentam estar fora do nosso plano de existência.

The sceneries in which the action unfolds share a certain quality of irreality, mystery and difficulty of location. Deep down, they look like scenographies and places that are not real. Deterritorialized, these regions appear to be outside of our plane of existence.

The central event of the 20th century is the destruction of matter...

The powers of the mind are all around us above the brute force of things.

I align myself with the French poet and writer GĂŠrard de Nerval (1808-1865). By travelling to the Orient, he is confronted and disillusioned by reality, and therefore decides to create a fiction that can fill the measure of his dreams.

He left to the East with many illusions: he wished to find a tableau vivant, filled with sensuality and mysticism.

The travel contains the opportunity of immersion in the promised exoticism of the Orient. Nevertheless, his dear and idealistic notions are progressively demystified as he travels and learns to accept the reality of the Orient.

Alinho-me com o poeta e escritor Francês Gérard de Nerval (1808-1865). Este, ao viajar para o Oriente, é confrontado e desiludido com a realidade, logo decide criar uma ficção que encha as medidas dos seus sonhos.

Ele partiu para o Oriente com imensas ilusões: a de encontrar um tableau vivant, pleno de sensualidade e misticismo. A viagem contém a oportunidade de imersão no exotismo prometido do Oriente. No entanto, as suas noções queridas e idealistas são progressivamente desmistificadas à medida que ele viaja e começa a aceitar a realidade do Oriente.

In his book Voyage to the Orient (1851), the author creates a very intriguing fold between the narrator and the main character. Nerval is the narrator and GĂŠrard (presumibaly an idealistic and naive version of himself) is the author of the book. I intend on exploring this question of identity and the ideas of alienation through the avatar of the traveller.

No livro Viagem ao Oriente (1851), o autor cria uma dobra muito intrigante entre o narrador e a personagem principal. Nerval é o narrador e Gérard (presumivelmente uma versão idealista e ingénua dele próprio) é o herói do livro. Procuro explorar esta questão de identidade e as ideias de alienação através do avatar do viajante.

A tecnologia é a minha maior ferramenta. A techné clássica — A arte do engenho, a capacidade humana de utilizar a sua inteligência para modificar o meio ambiente.

O meu trabalho acaba por encontrar novas dobras nessa definição. Vou levando essa ideia a um nível cada vez mais metafórico e operativo.

Quando falo de tecnologia não falo só de Fabricação Digital, algoritmos, ambientes imersivos e outras definições contemporâneas... falo também de tecnologias que temos como garantidas como a escrita e a linguagem.

Technology is my greatest tool. The classical techné — the art of ingenuity, the human ability to use its intelligence to modify the natural environment.

My work ends up finding new folds in this definition.

I gradually take that idea to a ever more metaphoric and operative level.

When I speak of technology, I do not refer only to Digital Fabrication, algorithms, immersive environments and other contemporary definitions... I also mean the sort of technologies that we take for granted such as writing and language.

Procuro a construção de um meta-atlas, formalizado através de registos e objetos recolhidos e simultaneamente uma reflexão e um auto-retrato em mutação, construído a partir de registos que recorrem a media tais como a fotografia, vídeo, áudio, escrita e desenho.

O Atlas Obscuro, tal como a Viagem ao Oriente de Nerval é uma peça aberta que dilui realidade e ficção. Objectos e registos são arranjados entre si de forma a incentivar à extrapolação e construção de novos significados e narrativas.

I aim at the construction of a meta-atlas, formalized through records and collected objects, built from records that rely on media such as photography, video, audio, writing and drawing.

The Dark Atlas, such as Voyage to the Orient, is an open piece that dilutes reality and fiction. Objects and records are rearranged between themseves in order to bolster extrapolation and creation of new meanings and narratives.

A minha busca está intimamente ligada com a vontade de explorar as dobras estranhas que surgem deste cruzamento. O negro, o obscuro e o subterrâneo são conceitos associados com o que é misterioso, oculto e desconhecido.

Estas são características que também podemos relacionar com o conjunto de funções psíquicas que existe abaixo da linha de consciência.

My quest is intimately connected with the will to explore the strange folds that come out of this intersection. Black, obscurity and the subterraneous are concepts associated to that which is mysterious, occult and unknown.

These are characteristics that we can also relate to the ensemble of psychic functions that exist below the line of consciousness.

Mestre em Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas-Artes — Universidade de Lisboa com o projecto Atlas Obscuro — Nomadismo Entre Realidade e Ficção sob a tutoria de Manuel Botelho e João Seguro.

Mestre em Arquitectura pela Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa com a tese Poética na Idade da Informação sob a tutoria de Fernando Hipólito Recipiente da Bolsa de Investigação da Fundação Oriente em 2015 — Infinisterra — Arquitectura e Cultura na Ásia Contemporânea.

Fundador do atelier Distante, um atelier e plataforma para a sua produção e investigação pessoal.

Membro do Blue Temple, um atelier e núcleo de investigação de Artes e Arquitectura especializado em questões de carácter social, sediado em Yangon, Myanmar. O projecto Gyo Byu Pipeline Initiative foi vencedor do Hong-Kong Design Trust Seed Grant em 2018.

Member of Blue Temple, an Arts and Architecture studio and research group specialized in social character projects, based in Yangon, Myanmar.

The studio’s Gyo Byu Pipeline Initiative was the winner of Hong-Kong Design Trust Seed Grant in 2018.

Founder of Infinisterra, a studio and think-tank based in Lisbon (2012-2017).
