TOPIC: FROM EDTECH TO PEDTECH

Changing the way we think about Digital Technology From EdTech to PedTech invites, encourages, and champions a more precise and forensic conversation about supporting learning, using digital technology where that is the most effective approach... Fiona Aubrey-Smith and Peter Twining, From Edtech to PedTech: Changing the way we think about Digital Technology, , 2024

Quite often when we think about EdTech, we talk about the different systems in place to

Now to introduce PedTech - the PedTech framed model recognises that assessment

serve a purpose for the curriculum we teach, through assessment where we have an insight to what has been learnt and how effective the curriculum provision has been and finally, pedagogy - an umbrella term which incorporates everything that relates to how we support learning. Digital Technology

drives practices by modifying the curriculum and pedagogy. Digital Technology is seen to be in the centre, as it impacts so many aspects of the education ecosystem. Pedagogy includes the Pedagogical Practices which are underpinned by values and beliefs, this is your personal Pedagogical Stance!

is seen as a tool to assist each of these elements. However, it is becoming more and more apparent that any kind of education is driven

Therefore, the use of technology in your classroom should be viewed through the lens of values and beliefs around digital technology. If we want to see a greater impact

by a purpose or vision. A curriculum sets out what needs to be learnt in order for the vision to be achieved. Assessments provide us with the evidence of the realistic trajectory the curriculum course is on and what is needed in

As teachers we are often asked to use digital

understanding as to how this technology will impact your learners.

Current research recognises that the greatest influence to meaningful use of digital technology in the classroom is the teacher themselves. Now, there are many influential factors which play an important part to a teacher’s Pedagogical Stance (belief) around the use of technology in their classroom. These factors include training and capacity. If the Teacher is not confident to use the technology, they often choose not to use or limit the use of technology. This leads us to the question of our own practice and the role digital tools play in our own pedagogical repertoire? Next month we will explore 4 personas, Traditional, Individual Constructivist, Social Constructivist and Sociocultural. What do these personas represent in terms of pedagogical beliefs or stances ? This will allow you to identify your own personal Pedagogical Beliefs.
