RULEBOOK PHILOSOPHIES Conversations around the role humans play in the destruction of the natural environment have nowadays grown stale, partly due to connotations with cliche solutions such as solar energy and planting trees. How can civic infrastructures directly shift the paradigm of public intrigue towards more unconventional approaches to climate change?

Located at the Western Treatment Plant, the site, an outdated wastewater filtering industrial complex and a methane power plant standing atop a degraded paddock.

The rapid incline for a contribution regarding the unconventional techniques of the rehabilitating of this degraded landscape, waste treatment and electricity generation are essential to the future of the site.

Our proposal is a contribution to the knowledge of the Dewatering process of Biosolid extraction, the production and generation of hydro electricity the manufacturing of power generators and artificial fertilising landscapes.

And the redistribution of fertilised soil to accommodate the site.

The site becomes a didactic network of clustered factory types, each becoming a crucial link in the biogeochemical cycle along the non-biodiverse landscape. The position of the clusters is crucial in communicating a symbiotic relationship between human interventions and landscape. They are specified by the location of the least biologically diverse areas while the infrastructural lines organically grow out of the constraints of contours and aquatic canals.

The iterative Process of the enhanced components were all to accentuate the didactic and spatial experience within the final outcomes. In the same way, The factory components that contributed to the original clusters, were perceived and enhanced through a new lens. The dewatering components of the various pumps and screw press, were reimagined and designed into becoming the various wall, floor, column and balustrade active modules. The range of hydro electric Aquatic tanks and generators were redesigned into the active wall, column, balustrade and seating modules; distributed throughout the final outcome.

The shift of perception regarding these components, have resulted in a catalogue of active feature modules. These modules can be applied and customised to a range of base spatial modules, given their active and applicable nature; Through these modules, each cluster becomes an active and didactic intervention that simultaneously rehabilitates the site and enforces a new paradigm.

A LIBRARY OF SMELLS

By being immersed in the contemporary library of smells, visitors’ perception of senses is challenged, provoking them to get lost in a cluster of infrastructures and voids, each talking to a memory of different natural elements that has finally resurfaced from the repitiviness of the urban lifestyle.

The refugee centre imagines a collection of boulevards, paths and courtyards formulated together as a result of a postapocalyptic scenario where citizens of different cultures come together and wish to be reminded of their cultural and historic and social identity. Such values are able to come to the surface and physcially manifest, bleeding through the enclosures into the street.

Each is asking for the attention of passers-by, acting as reminders that immserse citizens in the hybrid nature of a new society brought together. The singularity and continuation of the street binds together all such concepts and fragments of cultures. Forms also act as manuments in the landscape.

With the issue of densifying urban living, periodic fragments of nature in the form of smells become more rare in the city dweller’s lifestyle. Natural lotions, powder aromatics and air fresheners can therefore play a key role in bringing those moments back to the people and reconnecting them with specific elements ranging from flora species to rock types, all using the water from the odour control facility. By merging the civic space and the factory, an inbetween library of smells is formulated, reminding visitors of the power smell holds in affecting our wellbeing. Unlike conventional libraries that struggle to adapt in the online environment, the smelly library can only be experienced face to face. It is a celebration of the power smell.
