God has placed a vision of A Taste of Culture Magazine in my spirit seven years ago, inspiring me to become more educated about the different cultures that make up our world. My husband gave me the vision to see that four elements are found in all cultures, and this TM

FOOD

A family tradition By: Tammy Hudson

The holidays mean many things to many people.

For me and my family, it means the Mexican tradition of tamales.

Growing up in Colorado Springs, it was an annual holiday family tradition to make fresh tamales, share memories and make new ones. It was always an event in our household when it was time for tamales.

I’ve tried a lot of tamales over the years, and I can honestly say that no two tamales are the same.

Everyone prepares tamales differently with different fillings, sauces and spices.

The traditional tamale is made of masa (or dough), which is steamed in a cornhusk banana leaf and stuffed with a filling (typically meat).

Special Note** The northern region of Mexico is known for its reddish masa and plenty of beef fillings.

Ingredients • 5 pounds combination of pork and beef • Salt, Pepper and chile powder • 1½ pounds dried corn husks, soaked in water overnight • 1½ pounds lard (second choice: vegetable shortening) • 5 pounds fresh ground masa • 1 cup broth from beef and pork mixture (or low sodium beef broth) • 1 large steamer (tamale steamer) pot Instructions Tamale Meat: Cook meat, and seasonings in a slow cooker for 6 to 8 hours on high. Place in refrigerator and chill. Remove meat from refrigerator and remove solidified fat from top. Drain off liquid, reserving one cup to use in masa. Shred meat with a fork.

Tamale Masa: By hand, mix dry masa with lard, chili powder and broth from your meat mixture until you get the consistency of frosting.

Assembly & Cooking Spread ¼ to ⅓ cup masa on (soaked) corn husks, a little thicker than ¼ inch thick. Spread a rectangle that covers husks except 2 inches at bottom and 1 inch at top.

Place about 2 tablespoons of filling in center. Roll together so that masa completely encircles filling. Fold the bottom end up and place upright in a steamer, folded side down. If your tamales are too fat, you can cut a piece of the corn husk and tie it closed.

Steam for about 4 hours. Test the tamale by removing the corn husk from the tamale. The masa should be firm and able to be removed from the husk without sticking. ◗

Nourish Yourself with Good Eating Habits It is a serious time that we’re living in today family members, friends, love, ones, coworkers associates, neighbors, all have health challenges and even ourselves a big of the food at the grocery store is full of chemicals, colorings additives, preservatives hybrid, GMO‘s hydrogenated oil‘s every day we are making decisions, subconsciously, and some unconsciously that can make us or break us in the future.

When we look in the sky, they are spraying chemtrails, sometimes like tic-tac-toe in the sky, and I think sometimes we are all in serious trouble. The only protection that we have is supreme protection, and we have to go within and say I am protected. I am connected to the source that created the universe And ask for God’s protection In this crazy world that we live in and then we have to do our part and that’s where self care comes into play.

A good start is first thing in the morning drink a cup or a glass of warm water two three or four of them it is the best way to break fast and if you can squeeze a key lime or lemon into it, it will add some alkalinity to your life.

Give yourself some love look in the mirror and and take time to tell yourself I LOVE YOU everyday !!because self love is sooo important and throughout the day try to get at least eight classes of the best water that you can find. I use spring water that I buy and never drink water from the tap unless it has been filtered in someway, water is so important and everything on earth needs water and our bodies need water to operate and make sure that you drink it at room temperature or warm because cold water shocks your system unless you have a fever or you’re overheated then cool water is OK.

We also have filters on our showers. You can buy them at probably for between $19 and $29 since the skin is the biggest organ on our body, it absorbs everything that you put on it so be aware of the chemicals that you put on your body read the labels to the lotions and look at the ingredients to what you put on your skin and your hair it is all a part of self-care.

If you are experiencing any symptoms, I want you to think back at what did I eat? Sometimes you have to stop eating food and just drink water and take herbs. It is called fast it look into intermittent fasting, when you stop eating food for a certain amount of time and make sure that you sip some good water while you’re doing it, and it will help your body to balance.

And remember, you have to take care of yourself every day you must be a self Savior because how are you going to love somebody else if you don’t love yourself, self-care is the highest form of self love.

each region has its own distinct style of clothing. Get ready to unravell the threads of Australia’s fashion heritage!

Northern Territory - Tiwi Islanders The Tiwi Islands are a group of islands located off the coast of Northern Territory, Australia. The traditional clothing of the Tiwi Islanders is steeped in culture and symbolism and features some of the most intricate designs seen in traditional clothing.

The

women’s clothing is particularly noteworthy, with their garments often incorporating symbols associated with their beliefs, such as the moon and stars.

Western Australia - Noongar people The Noongar people are the traditional custodians of the land in the south-west of Australia. They have a long and rich history, with a culture that is deeply intertwined with the land and its resources.

This connection to the land has been reflected in their traditional clothing, which has unique regional characteristics. One style of clothing traditionally worn by Noongar people is a kangaroo skin cloak called booka.

Tasmania - Palawa people Tasmania is home to the traditional style of the Palawa people, an Aboriginal tribe that has been present in the region for more than 40,000 years. The traditional style of the Palawa people is known for Photo credit: holdfast.sa.gov.au/discover-our-place

its vibrant colors and prints which are used to express stories, legends, and dreams .

Traditional attire for Palawa men consists of wrap-around skirts or ‘nangas’ in vibrant yellows and reds, while women typically wore a wrap- around skirt and top in shades of blue and white. The Palawa also have a distinct style of beading and embroidery which was used to decorate their garments.

In addition to traditional clothing, the Palawa people also had an impressive range of jewelry, often passed down from generation to generation as a symbol of heritage and connection with the land.

Discovering the Cultural Gems of Columbus,Ohio

A Taste of Culture magazine is proud to call Columbus, Ohio, so it’s only fitting to share about this hidden gem of both a hometown and a weekend destination.

Food “What do I eat?” should never be the question in Columbus.

Instead, the question should be “What do I eat first?” as the possibilities are endless.

Every neighborhood has their own collection, and even crown jewels, of restaurants. Trendy urban restaurants can be found throughout the lively Short North district, while German Village still offers an authentic taste of Germany at Schmidt’s, and the Arena District offers quick “bar bites” before concerts or sporting events.

Think you spotted a neat Columbus restaurant on the Food Network? You probably did! Numerous Columbus restaurants have been seen on several Food Network programs, including those hosted by Columbus native Guy Fieri. Elsewhere from TV, the Thurman Café and its massive Thurmanator Burger can also be found in German Village.

If you’re a carnivore and leave German Village still hungry… it’s your own fault.

But German is far from the only international cuisine to be found.

Simply pick what you’re craving and you’re sure to find it.

Additionally, your preferred dining ‘vibe’ is sure to be found— whether you’re looking for a cozy sit-down, a classic diner, or something more lively to engage with other patrons.

Columbus doesn’t just serve up good food, but is also the business home to a variety of regional-and-beyond dining brands. Fast food chain Wendy’s got its start in Columbus when founded by Dave Thomas, while Max and Erma’s, regional staple Bob Evans, and fast-growing City Barbeque have roots and business headquarters in the Columbus metro area.

Don’t forget the sweet treat at the end! Dessert menus don’t disappoint in Columbus, in addition to being home to Jeni’s ice cream which can found throughout the city. Looking for something little to satisfy a sweet craving? Everywhere else it’s simply a peanut butter ball dunked in chocolate, but in the state capital and home of the Buckeyes, you’ll find chocolate buckeye candies.

Fashion Columbus is secretly (or perhaps not-so-secretly) a fashion city in its own right. With on of the highest concentrations of fashion designers in the country, Columbus covers all the fashion bases. The city is independent designer-friendly with ample opportunities to showcase styles.

Fashion Week Columbus will take place later this fall during the last week of September, the 24th- 30th. The event is still taking shape, but the calendar for the week is already filling up with runway shows and other fashion events.

In addition to the latest from independent designers, style meets management in Columbus. Fashion retailers found across the United States, and beyond, have their headquarters in the Columbus metro area.

Brands such as Victoria’s Secret, Express, Lane Bryant, and DSW all call Columbus home.

Designers don’t just move to Columbus looking to begin or advance their careers. Young aspiring designers come to learn not only from working alongside established designers but by taking part in the fashion design program at Columbus College of Art and Design or the fashion and retail program at The Ohio State University.

FEATURE Travel Some people travel for food. Some people will travel for fashion. But many want to check out specific attractions or locations when they choose a travel destination. Columbus has a little something for everyone, in addition to easy access to much more.

Ohio State Fair

Make it a family adventure, or get back in touch with your childlike self, at COSI (short for Center of Science and Industry, but only the ‘old locals’ will know that!). A hands-on museum, COSI showcases everyday science with plenty of “wow factor” making it no surprise it routinely is recognized as a top science museum in the country. Prefer to make it an adults- only trip? COSI hosts after-hours themed events exclusively for adults offering the chance to explore like kids, but without the kids.

Looking to explore at a slower pace? The Columbus Museum of Art and Franklin Park Conservatory are great ways to soak in artistic and natural beauty.

Numerous metro parks are also found throughout Columbus and it’s surrounding metro area affording a chance to escape the city scene without really leaving the city.

Shopping is plenty around Columbus, whether looking for trendy local shops or larger centers such Topiary Park Easton Town Center. Polaris offers a traditional indoor mall setting, while Entertainment.

Larger venues ranging from Nationwide Arena in the downtown Arena District to Ohio Stadium on Ohio State’s campus have played host to internationally-famous artists on major tours.

Need even more to do? Venture an hour or two in almost any direction from Columbus and end up with access to entirely different museums and even whole new worlds.

From the famous Mardi Gras celebrations to the many lively jazz clubs and restaurants, the city of New Orleans is a place like no other. Known for its unique blend of French and African-American influences, there is something here to suit any taste. Explore the diverse and exciting entertainment scene of New Orleans, and dive into the city’s colorful culture.

The Music French Quarter or the Garden District, music is almost unavoidable. For those looking to explore this unique musical history firsthand, there are plenty of venues where you can take it all in. Check out Preservation Hall in the French Quarter for classic jazz tunes, or head to one of the many clubs around town to hear some local favorites.

The Architecture New Orleans is a city that is well-known for its unique architecture and beautiful historic buildings. A wealth of amazing structures can be found throughout the city.

The Two Shores of Italy CONTRIBUTED BY STARR| travelsbystarr.com Located on the eastern coast of Italy and bordering Tuscany is the region of Le Marche.

After an incredible week exploring the Le Marche region of Italy I finally returned home to Cortona. It was bittersweet – happy see my little dog, Henri, but my apartment felt overwhelming empty without Maddy and Sam. I find myself going to check to see if Sam is STILL sleeping and automatically picking up items for them at the grocery. I know many of you these past weeks have felt this same emptiness with your own children heading off to college. It is a difficult adjustment, but knowing how much they are enjoying their respective schools makes it a bit more bearable.

Fortunately, I have wonderful friends here to catch up with over coffee or vino in the piazza, a last-minute trip to Capalbio, and a visit to Florence to tour a potential hotel for clients. And, most importantly, I have stayed quite busy with new clients. One in particular became a bit tricky navigating the new rules and restrictions for traveling to Italy. Luckily, it all went our way and they have been happily exploring Rome, Tuscany and Venice this week.

Pecorino – The grape not the cheese In addition to exploring the villages and beaches, we visited two wineries sampling local varietals including Pecorino. Have you ever heard of the Pecorino grape?

Me neither!

A prominent varietal in the area it makes for a lovely and very enjoyable white wine. And no, it has absolutely nothing to do with the cheese. They believe the name derives from the Italian word “pecora” meaning sheep. As the grapes grow in the mountains the sheep grazing here often ate them.

A favorite find was the city of Loreto From a far distance this particular town dominates the landscape with its formidable walls and massive church dome. We discovered through a quick google search that its claim to fame is the Sanctuary of Loreto where the Santa Casa della Vergine Maria (Shrine of the Holy House of Mary) is preserved. According to tradition this is the house that the Virgin Mary was born, raised, and where she received the Annunciation. The three stone walls that enclosed a rock cavern creating her home, were brought to Italy during the crusades in 1294.

Capalbio Located just 93 miles south of Florence the coast of Capalbio stretches for 7 miles along the Tuscan Mediterranean. This rugged area features long stretches of beaches with white and black sand, coves protected by small dunes, and dark blue water. The La Dogana di Capalbio Beach Club offers a quiet oasis with chair and umbrella rentals on the uncrowded beach and a full restaurant featuring seasonal delights throughout the day. The comfy bar area is the perfect place to enjoy a morning cappuccino or an aperitivo at sunset. For those who wish to extend their stay there are stylish glamping tents tucked away next to the beach club. ◗

Philippine Pop Culture: From Music to Movies The Philippines is a country with a rich entertainment history and culture, and it is home to some of the most popular and beloved forms of pop culture in the world.

The Philippines is also known for its love of movies. The 1960s and 70s saw the introduction of “bomba” movies, which focused on sexploitation and melodrama. The 1980s saw an increase in film production as well, with many classic Filipino films being produced during this time.

Today, film continues to be an important part of Filipino culture.

Music Contemporary pop music has become increasingly popular in the Philippines over the years. The country is known for its unique mix of English and Tagalog lyrics and catchy rhythms. Popular Filipino musicians include Lea Salonga, Aiza Seguerra, Sarah Geronimo, and Erik Santos. These artists have gained international recognition for their powerful vocal performances and chart-topping hits.

The Cooley Family A Legacy of Entrepreneurship

Richard Edward Cooley comes from a long line of entrepreneur, his ancestors beginning their entrepreneurial endeavors with the opening of Cooley's Market in Urbancrest, Ohio in the 1920s.

From the 1940s to the mid-1960s, John Henry Cooley Sr. and his son, John Albert Cooley, managed the business. To honor their achievements, a street was named after John A. Cooley, and the U.S. House of Representatives awarded the two with the Mayor Ellen Walker-Craig-Jones Community Service Award during Black History Month in 2015.

Richard worked as a Field Service Rep. Test Engineer at General Dynamics Electronics Division and returned to Urbancrest to assist the family business, but ultimately had a greater goal to be an entrepreneur.

In 1993, Richard and his wife, Rolinda (Brooks) Cooley, established their own venture, R&R Entertainment and Publishing Group, Inc. The couple initiated Gospel Music and Ministry Connection Magazine in 1993, then launched A Taste of Culture Magazine in 2019.

Currently, Richard continues to move his media company forward, making sure to perpetuate the name of the Cooley family.

The country boasts cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, in addition to its remarkable Kruger National Park and its plentiful wildlife.

Food. The culinary landscape of South Africa is rife with flavours and varieties, as its traditional dishes, like bobotie, braai, pap, and chakalaka, are recognized throughout the world, embodying the varied influences of Dutch, French, Indian, and African traditions.

Travel. Visitors can take their journey from the streets of Johannesburg to the vast countryside of the Garden Route and bask in South Africa’s beauty. Its culture is rich and diverse, as is its wildlife and there is no shortage of activities, such as hiking, biking, surfing, and more, to be explored. In terms of entertainment, South Africa is a haven for all.

Somalia - East Africa The Somali culture is vibrant and complex, with an intriguing unified ethnicity. Let's explore what makes them so unique.

Food. A traditional Somali breakfast includes flatbread and sambusa, a savory pastry filled with meat or vegetables. Somali cuisine also features delicious grilled meats, such as lamb and goat. Seafood is another popular component of the Somali diet, as the country has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean.

Fashion is an important part of Somali culture, and the traditional dress of women consists of a colorful hijab, a long skirt, and a top. The men’s traditional clothing includes a sarong-like wrap known as a macawiis.

Sierra Leone- West Africa Sierra Leone, situated in West Africa, is celebrated for its captivating beauty and dynamic culture.
