MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER Thank You, Dr. Bobby Jones!

I had been successfully marketing Black music and artists for years when I decided to spread my professional wings into publishing a Gospel magazine. Both were new to me when I launched the Gospel Music Connection. But God blessed me with an introduction to Dr. Bobby Jones, a widely admired trailblazer with his popular Bobby Jones Gospel show on BET, the first and longest-running Gospel show on TV.. Bobby knew everybody, gave unprecedented visibility to gospel artists, and opened doors that helped me immeasurably.

Our friendship continued for decades and he was there to lend his knowledgeable advice and contacts for my latest magazine venture, A Taste of Culture. You may have seen promotional ads for Dr. Bobby Jones in these pages, but that exposure was just a small gesture given the magnitude of our indebtedness to him. When Richard and I went to Nashville in late March for Bobby’s live recording of his last CD with the Nashville Super Choir, we felt that the time was right to feature our loyal and extraordinary friend on the cover of this magazine.

The event itself was star-studded with Gospel royalty, including Kim Burrell, Tamala Mann, Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers, among others, along with Bobby’s own Nashville Super Choir. In his typically generous manner, he allowed us to showcase the magazine at his event and it was very well received by the attendees, Thank you, Dr. Bobby Jones!

We also try to bring you stories that resonate with global events. Our recent cover subject, Chef Josẻ Andrés of World Central Kitchen (WCK), did just that. While the courageous efforts of WCK volunteers to feed starving Palestinians in the IsraelGaza war zone ended tragically, they confirmed that the best of us are willing to risk our lives to help others. Closer to home, we salute our own Food Editor Mitchell Henderson who leads a team giving back to his Ohio community by feeding needy seniors.

In March, our team had the privilege of attending a special event commemorating Women's History Month. Held at the esteemed Jefferson Country Club, the event was a significant luncheon and award reception hosted by the WomeNomic$ Movement. On March 29th, distinguished guests gathered to pay homage to the impactful legacy of women in politics, with the highlight being the presentation of the inaugural WomeNomic$ Legend History Maker Award.

The recipient of this prestigious honor was Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, celebrated for her outstanding contributions and pioneering efforts in the political realm, which have left an enduring imprint on history.

Congresswoman Beatty's unwavering dedication to public service and her relentless advocacy for equality were duly acknowledged during the event.

One hundred and fifty-nine years ago, our African American ancestors in Galveston, Texas, commemorated the first Juneteenth festival in the nation. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger read official order #3 to the African American captives of Galveston, signaling their liberation. This momentous occasion came two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing all African American captives in the rebellious South.

Juneteenth symbolized African American Independence Day, a testament to their resilience and the first step towards freedom.

Beyonce Goes Country HBCU Classic Bobby Jones: A Salute to a Gospel Game Changer Entertainment Reviews Feature Artist Poets Corner

The most successful artists always exercise the power to reinvent themselves.

Think Madonna. So why can’t an R&B/Pop superstar like Beyoncé emerge as genrehopping Cowboy Carter, her newest album topping the Country Music charts?

There was a great deal of well-publicized controversy surrounding the release of the album’s first single, the catchy “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which also rocketed up the charts. She was the first Black female artist to do that, joining black male Country artists such as Charlie Pride. The song also topped the Billboard 100 and Spotify streams.

Some Country-formatted stations even refused to play the song, but listeners had the last word. They loved it! Understandably, Beyoncé felt vindicated after the rejection she experienced when she performed with The Chicks at the 2016 Country Music Association Awards.

Because of her celebrity, Beyoncé had been portrayed as an entitled interloper who just walked into country music. It was a charge she deeply resented. And in a very real sense, the Houston, Texas, native was defending her own heritage growing up with the music whose history has strong black roots. Besides her own Texas bona fides, Beyoncé insisted on incorporating authentic elements in her music.

The banjo in the opening bars of “Texas Hold ‘Em” and throughout the song is the work of Rhiannon Giddens. She is a black performer/scholar who emphasizes that the banjo evolved from West African lutes, made from gourds, that were brought to America by slaves Remember “Fiddler” in Roots? Blacks traveled to plantations helping to polish the music. .

Respected documentary producer Ken Burns, who focused on Country Music in a 16-hour series, confirmed its long history of African American influence. “So much of what we love about country music comes from people of color,” Burns said, “The first string bands in this country were enslaved people. Black folks have always made country music.”

Few know of black pioneers such as Deford Bailey, a harmonica player who worked invisibly with the Grand Old Opry on radio from the 1920s to the 1940s and mentored many white country acts. Or Linda Martell, who became the first black woman to attain any commercial success in country music in the 70s.

Although the genre has had other breakthrough artists including the late Charlie Pride and more recently, Darius Rucker (the first black members of the Opry), Mickey Guyton, Kane Brown, Jimmie Allen and Lil Nas X, a hip-hop artist who scored chart-topping success with his “Old Town Road.” But Beyoncé was among the first major stars to cross over into the genre in such a visible way – a list that includes Ray Charles and even Tina Turner, among others. And her success has been unprecedented.

So, whose music is it anyway? Whether or not you choose to saddle up musically with Cowboy Carter, she has invited the world to ride.

The Beyoncé Effect in Fashion and Dance

There are few artists today who make fashion statements and create trends more consistently than Beyoncé. When she appeared at the Grammy Awards this year in fully glamorized Western attire, she was actually teasing the public with the next incarnation of her career. It was a carefully orchestrated preview of the emergence of Cowboy Carter.

Since its release, the album has dominated cultural conversation. And the music icon has been ushering in her country era with Western-inspired fashion moments. From the Grammys to her surprise appearance at New York Fashion Week.

In addition to setting trends in the popularity of her “Cowboy Chic,” Queen Bey is also opting for vintage looks for her key appearances, as seen with the Western-inspired Fall 1992 Versace look she sported at the 2024 iHeart Radio Music Awards, where she was honored with an Innovator Award. As it happens with her iconic looks, on her, they are more relevant than ever — and fit her so well.

Away from haute couture, everyday fashionistas have gone country too. The signature cowboy hats, boots, lots of stylized denim, including Levi’s heavily accessorized with Western gear, are increasingly appearing around the country.

Many of these outfits are worn by couples and country line dance groups who have dominated TikTok and YouTube with dances choreographed primarily to “Texas Hold ‘Em.” The enthusiastic dancers represent a cross-section of ages, races, pros and amateurs. The diversity of participants speaks convincingly to the widespread popularity of music created by an artist who may well never have been on the playlists of any of the folks who are now dancing to Beyoncé!

The city of Columbus recently played host to a momentous event that combined athleticism, entertainment, and philanthropy: the Columbus Classic. Held at The Schottenstein Center, this annual event brought together participants and spectators from across the region for a day of spirited competition and goodwill.

Organized by Classic for Columbus, the event aims to raise funds for scholarships benefiting students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This noble cause underscores the commitment of the organizers and participants to support education and empower future generations.

This year's Columbus Classic was a resounding success, with participants showcasing their skills in an all-star basketball game of 12 HBCU basketball players versus 12 basketball players from other schools in Ohio. With the HBCU all-start team taking home the win with the score 134 - 130.

But the Columbus Classic wasn't just about competition; In addition to the sporting events, the Columbus Classic featured a range of entertainment options, including live music performance by Pleasure P, food vendors offering delicious cuisine, and interactive activities for all ages.

The major highlight of the day was the scholarship presentation ceremony, where deserving students were awarded financial assistance to pursue their educational dreams at the HBCU of choice.

Overall, the Columbus Classic was a testament to the power of sports, community, and philanthropy to make a positive impact in the lives of others. As the event continues to grow and evolve, it serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations, reminding us of the importance of coming together to support worthy causes and build a brighter future for all.

W

hen Dr. Bobby Jones appeared recently on Sherri Shepherd’s talk show, the host and audience were amazed by the appearance and vitality of this 85-year-old. In a life filled with trailblazing achievements, he is widely recognized for his singular and decades-long efforts to bring greater exposure to black gospel music and artists.

At 15, the native of rural Henry County, Tenn., entered HBCU Tennessee State University in Nashville, where he received a Bachelor of Science at 19 and a Master’s in Education. He went on to earn a Doctorate in Education from Vanderbilt University and a Doctor of Theology from Payne Theological Seminary, in addition to numerous honorary doctorates over the years.

At the beginning of his career, Dr. Jones taught reading to young students in St. Louis and Nashville and later moved to his alma mater Tennessee State as an instructor. But soon another calling on his life emerged as he began to focus on gospel music. “It was everywhere in Nashville, but did not have a strong media presence,” he explained.

He saw the need for a platform for the music he had come to love and creatively embraced its potential to reach new audiences on television. That opportunity came in 1976 when WSM-TV (now WSMV) hired Dr. Bobby Jones to host its weekly show, Nashville Gospel. His affinity for the music, combined with his warm and engaging personality, proved to be a natural fit.

Four years later, his signature brand of dignified showmanship was poised to make history when Bobby Jones Gospel was launched in 1980 in the Sunday morning lineup on BET. From the show’s debut, it was clear that a gamechanging era in exposure for gospel music had begun.

Bobby Jones Gospel spent an impressive 35 years on BET, making it the longest-running gospel music show in cable television history. Upon his retirement from BET, Dr. Jones joined the Impact TV network, hosted other gospel shows on television – and kept an ongoing presence on radio through AURN and other outlets.

When asked if he could have imagined the magnitude of the success he achieved, Dr. Jones was typically humble. “No, I did not,” he said. “I was just doing something I loved and spreading gospel to audiences who loved it too.”

But he was nearly singlehandedly serving a then underserved segment of the music industry. “Gospel music wasn’t that popular until the record labels got involved,” he added. “They started sending their artists to me and we were able to help launch or boost many of their careers.”

Indeed he was. The list includes those who are now marquee names in gospel: Yolanda Adams, Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin – all representing contemporary gospel – while he also featured more traditional artists such as the late and legendary Albertina Walker, among many others across the gospel spectrum.

“Some may have criticized the look, sound, and performing styles of many of these artists,” he said, “but the message of their music was more important to me.” Adams, whose music combines touches of R&B and Smooth Jazz, says: “He didn’t just give me the platform, he also validated what I was doing.”

And Kirk Franklin, who was one of the first gospel artists to meet young listeners where they were with his hip-hop-influenced music, has said of Dr. Jones: “Everyone stands on his shoulders. We are who we are because of “Bobby Jones Gospel.”

In 1984, Bobby Jones and New Life with Barbara Mandrell received a Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Performance By A Duo or Group for “I’m So Glad I’m Standing Here Today.” A collection of Dove, Stellar, and Trumpet Awards also celebrate his gospel industry success.

Dr. Jones is the author of two books: Touched By God (1999), life-changing stories from gospel artists, and his best-selling memoir, Make A Joyful Noise: My 25 Years in Gospel Music (2000). Film appearances include “Sister Sister” (1987), written by Dr. Maya Angelou, his dear friend with whom, he shares, he spent every Thanksgiving for 25 years until her passing. More recently, he has a role in the upcoming “Grandma’s House,” an inspiring Christian movie starring Loretta Devine that will premiere in mid-May. Today, Dr. Bobby Jones remains actively involved in gospel music, with an impressive discography of recordings that has produced a loyal and enduring fan base that is worldwide. He still seems amazed at the magnitude of his global impact and recognition.

We celebrate his generosity of spirit and unwavering dedication to uplifting and indelibly shaping the exposure of gospel music to wider audiences. May his legacy continue to inspire generations with the Good News of love, faith, hope, and joy.

Arthur Sutton & The Gift Of Praise Profile Arthur Sutton was born in Yazoo, Mississippi and raised on the south side of Chicago. He has produced several albums in his career dating back to the 90’s. As a bass and guitarist, he has written over 100 songs, some of which has earned him Stella award recognition. Arthur was the producer and musician for the “How Sweet The Sound Choir Competition in 2008. Janet Sutton, his wife, and The Voices of Acme Choir were named the “Best Church Choir in the America.” As a result, the choir was nominated for a Stellar Award back in 2010.

When Arthur is not writing and playing music, he has an earned Juris Doctorate Degree in Law and works as a licensed attorney in the State of Illinois as a trial litigator.

Entertainment Law is one of his fields of practice along with contracts, family law, real estate, criminal, and other civil litigation.

Arthur is married to Janet Sutton and they have three children Nikita Campbell, Arthur Sutton Jr. and Jucari Sutton, who travels and plays bass guitar and drums for his gospel group called “The Gift of Praise” originated in Chicago. He just released his latest single in June 2023 entitled: “God Always Keeps His Promise” which has ranked in top 70’s on Media base. He will be recording his first Chicago “LIVE” recording on June 30, 2024.

Arthur Sutton and The Gift of Praise has a mixed blend of Christian temporary and quartet tradition and they have traveled across the country performing since 1990. They have appeared on the same stage with some of the music industry’s top artist such as Fred Hammond, Dorinda Clark, the Clark Sisters, John P Kee, The Williams Brothers, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC’s, Yolanda Adams, Albertina Walker, Dorothy Norwood, The Canton Spirituals, Kurt Carr, Tremaine Hawkins, Karen Clark-Sheard, Kurt Karr, Shirley Ceasar, Tim Rogers, Donnie McClurkin and others to name a few.

Music is truly his passion and God continues to anoint his mind and heart with powerful lyrics to write and sing and lift up Jesus in song, worship, and praise such as his prior hit singles “I Got An Angel” and “He Extended My Life” ranked #1 on Internet Charts and climbing the Media base chart.

With Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June, here are some special meal ideas that kids can prepare for their parents on their special day. They are not only delicious, but allow children to get creative in the kitchen and show their culinary appreciation to Mom and Dad..

Heart-Shaped Pancakes: Serve breakfast with love. Mix pancake batter and use cookie cutters to make heart-shaped pancakes.

Serve the pancakes with fresh berries whipped cream and a drizzle of maple syrup.

Fruit Kabobs with Yogurt Dip: Children can skewer a variety of fresh fruits such as strawberries, pineapple chunks, grapes, and melon balls onto bamboo skewers to make fruit kabobs. Serve the fruit kabobs with a side of vanilla yogurt mixed with honey for dipping.

Personalized Pizza Pocket: Mom would love this treat for lunch.

Roll out pizza dough and cut it into small circles. Kids can fill each circle with pizza sauce, cheese, and their mom’s favorite toppings, such as pepperoni, mushrooms, and olives. Fold the circles in half to make pizza pockets and bake until golden brown.

Apple Cider Glazed Wings: What Dad doesn’t love wings? After preparing baked or fried wings to taste, it’s time for the glaze.

Combine apple cider, Korean chili paste, a pinch of salt and honey in a small stock pot. Cook over medium heat until mixture reduces to about one-third of its original volume. Toss wings and enjoy.

Homemade Dessert Parfaits: To seal the deal, here’s a sweet treat. Layer glasses with crumbled cookies or cake, vanilla pudding or yogurt, fresh berries or sliced fruit and whipped cream.

Add a drizzle of chocolate sauce to make the perfect dessert.

Serve the parfaits with a spoon and a sprinkle of chocolate shavings on top.
