MEDIA wasteland or

wellspring?

I’ve always loved stories — all kinds of them. But more specifically, I’ve always loved the stories told visually through movies or television. As a kid, I was often enthralled with them. I think especially of Star Wars; I only saw the films a few times, but the stories stuck with me. On a rainy Sunday afternoon, sixth-grade Grant wouldn’t be inside — he would be outside, running around the forest with a lightsaber and a backpack of essentials, living epic Jedi adventures. I didn’t realize then how much the stories and themes of these films and others would stick with me.

The great stories played out in movies have the power to take simple themes and grow them into ideas that inspire and inform the way we live. I don’t watch most media as entertainment. Rather, I try to watch as an active viewer, looking beyond the surface of favorite shows and movies and allowing these stories to sink into the heart and soul.

Consider the popular current TV series Game of Thrones. The show has no boundaries. Holding nothing back, it is ruthless with even its most beloved characters.

into the story. The show’s raw viciousness can seem fantastical and distant, but the sad truth is that these sort of disturbing events and personalities do surface in our world. Children driven from their homes, slaves, ruthless pimps, murderers, and powerful gang-like families are all reality; whether behind closed doors or in public, they are commonplace. Shows like Game of Thrones don’t desensitize me to this brutality; rather, they sensitize me to the wrongness of the world. Rather than fairy tales that provide escape, these stories are deeply tied to reality.

I encourage you to rethink the way you consume media. Let TV and movies make you think. Talk about what you watch with others. If you do, the next episode of The Walking Dead is more than a zombie sci-fi drama, About Time more than a funny chick flick, and The Lord of the Rings more than an epic action film. They become thought-provokers which can change the way we interact with the world. As author Madeleine L'Engle said, “Stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving.” In this issue, as we discuss the ethics of media and how we can better consume it, I hope that you are inspired to think more about the media you watch and how it can change you for the better.

This next week’s CommUnity will give Walla Walla University students the org pe. opportunity to see the world through sofho e c the eyes of renowned National fa Geographic documentary photojournalist Alison Wright.

Wright, who has published many works for multiple magazines, is not a staff photographer, but an independent humanitarian photographer. Through her incredible talent she has won many awards, including a 2013 National Geographic Traveler of the Year award. She has also been featured in multiple magazines,

including National Geographic, Time, Forbes, and many more, with every one of her photos shedding new light on the people and world around us.

to show us who these people are that make up the world in which we live. But most of all, it showcases the culture, diversity, and different life experiences among us.

“The planet, at times, can seem so vast, with the numbers almost too large for us to comprehend,” Wright says “But when you capture the look in someone’s eyes, an intimate stare, a knowing glance, his or her situation becomes a shared experience, a more personal connection.”

“It takes a very talented photographer to be able to shoot a picture of someone, print it out, and have strangers look at the photo and really experience the shot, even though they weren’t there in the moment and don’t necessarily have knowledge about the subject,” said sophomore photography minor Jill Carter.

Her presentation for CommUnity will be entitled “Face to Face: Portraits of the Human Spirit,” after her new book. The portraits of this book focus on the appearance of different ethnic people in their native country

Staff Writer The Walla Walla University Drama Department presents Oh! Gastronomy at the Black Box Theatre. This production is full of musical numbers, thought-provoking illustrations, laughs, and lots of “free” food — a personal pizza from the Why Not Pizza food truck during the Thursday and Sunday performances, and ice cream at the Saturday evening performance.

The production is a series of short plays that go off in rapid-fire succession. Each mini-play is a display of the role of food in our culture and lifestyles. Progressive food culture and foodie jargon are at odds with counter-culture interests of “green ice cream” and “micro-greens.” First-world excess is balanced with the ability of food to bring

The stage is intimate and appears as a buffet-like array of food carts and fresh fruit and vegetable stands (it’s real food, too!). Throughout the performance there is an interactive feel with the set and the cast attributed to food samples and business cards (chances to win some gift cards) that are casually passed out to members of the audience. The musical numbers showcase the vocal talents of many Walla Walla University students, accompanied by the ukelele, box drum, and guitar.

This production of Oh! Gastronomy is only the third production of the play to have been done in the U.S. since it was written for the 2012 Humana Festival. Music Club is hosting an afternoon of live music, carnival games, and food at Pioneer Park on Sunday, May 18 from 4:30–7:30 p.m.

WWU Music Club hosted A Notable Afternoon for the first time in June, 2012.

The event had a turnout of 400 people both from WWU and from the local community.

The event included a popcorn booth, soft drinks, face-painting, and balloon animals, which were all popular among families. All the visitors enjoyed a rare opportunity to hear live jazz music for free at the park.

This is Music Club’s second Notable Afternoon. Activities this weekend will include carnival games, face painting, a bake sale and other food and drinks, a photo booth, a kissing booth, animal balloons, and much more. Admission to A Notable

Live music will feature our very own WWU jazz and steel drum ensembles under the direction of Brandon Beck, as well as jazz ensembles from Central Middle School and McLoughlin High School, under the direction of Michael Agidius.

Beck is director of the band and wind instrument program at WWU, a position he has held since 2000. He directs the Wind Symphony, Steel Band, Brass Ensembles, and as of 2009, the Symphony Orchestra.

Agidius teaches band grades 6–12 at Central and Mac-Hi, as well as jazz ensemble at WWU. He has been a band director in the Milton-Freewater School District since 1987. Agidius’ Central Middle School Jazz band and McLoughlin High School Jazz Ensemble have been recognized throughout the Northwest and have won several prestigious jazz festivals.

Hey guys, I don’t know about you all, but it’s that time of the quarter where I have no motivation to do anything except go to Starbucks and watch Grey’s Anatomy. But tests keep coming no matter how much I wave them away with another nap. This quarter, I am in Nursing of the Acutely Ill, and I’m sure that EKG information will be on the final. Here is a little poem I found that helped me out and may at least be a cute review for you of the heart’s conduction system.

With the advent of your first child, free time becomes a thing of the past. Prepare to adjust your lofty goals as well. Rather than dedicating life to the betterment of society, a parent must be dedicated to the labor-laden raising of only a few children. Then you’re faced with the choice of giving up your award-winning career that you’ve studied for your whole life or hiring a nanny.

driving to school twice a day ... again), your sleep cycle, household decorations (nothing is truly childproof), grocery list, movie and music selection (keep it age appropriate!), choice of pets, and social circle (don’t forget the Parent/Teacher Association meetings).

Opinion Editor I enjoy pretty much all types of music, give or take a few genres (screamo, ... screamo, etc.). In my opinion, each genre of music has a time and place, and hopefully a crowd who enjoys it. Pop music is actually one of my favorite types of music. It’s catchy, I can exercise to it, and in general, it makes me feel happy. One of my favorite current songs is “Say Something” by A Great Big World. The other day, I was listening to it on the radio, and was perturbed because I actually listened to the lyrics ... of which there weren’t a large variety. I went through some of my other favorites, encountering a similar trend — repetition of lyrics, lack of harmonic variety, and less-than-appropriate messages.

So what has happened to the musical arts?

Less than 20 years ago, Etta James’ soulful version of “At Last,” a wistful song about love, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Twenty-seven years before, Dimtri Shostakovich’s last symphony was performed for the first time. Both of these musicians, though incredibly different, have my respect.

Shostakovich underwent an intense amount of persecution by the Soviet Union, yet continued to create beautiful, poignant music, and the voice of talented Ms. James was not autotuned. What the public deems “popular music” has become less and less thought provoking. It has become less about the talent of a musician or composer and more about money and sex.

Take, for instance, American sweetheart Taylor Swift. I myself have jammed out to “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “Teardrops on My Guitar.”

However, I had the opportunity to hear

Swift live and was somewhat disappointed by the mediocrity. There are several musicians at our own University who, I think, could sing circles around some of the pop stars that grace our radio stations. And even if these pop stars do have a smidgen of talent, it is quickly overshadowed by publicity stunts, scandals, and bedazzled leotards.

The turbulence and confusion of war, mental illness, and personal tragedy, culture, and life experience all play a key role in the development of music. To some extent, music has always been a reflection of the ideologies of the time period or the composer. Not surprisingly, popular music has come to reflect what our society values. If we value love, compassion, peace, and grace, that is what the music will reflect.

If we value money, power, and sex, that is what the music will be about. If we want better music, we need to make a better world first.

Last millennium, before many of you had drawn breath, I wrote around 7,700 words for an article entitled, “Redeeming Our Sad Gay Situation.” In the wayback machine on December 5, 1992, this was the first substantive piece written by the Adventist press on the subject of LGBTI — in fact, before the acronym even existed.1 Since then, much and little have changed. The first openly gay NFL player was drafted by the St. Louis Rams this month. Reparative therapy has been shown to be a harmful disaster, to the extent that in 2013, Exodus International, a leader in “change therapy,” apologized to the gay community and shuttered its doors forever.

And the Adventist Church, guardians and seekers alike, still sincerely grapples with how to treat our brothers and sisters whose sexual orientation is “different.”

The best book I have read on the topic is Justin Lee’s Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.Christians Debate (2012). Lee addresses how any church, no matter its stance, can respond as followers of Jesus to the LGBTI community.2

Even churches that promote celibacy should be actively responsive. As my friend Shane Claiborne points out in The Irresistible Revolution, he opposes abortion, yet recognizes that he must then be willing to adopt some babies and support single mothers. If churches are going to condemn a homosexual to a life of singleness they must not also condemn him or her to a life of loneliness.

Churches need to step up with active, vibrant, nonjudgmental, grace-filled singles ministries that support LGBTI members.

2. In building a practical, biblical hermeneutic, we should ask ourselves, What are the fruits of this approach? Does this in any way diminish love? Is it in line with the gracious character of Jesus? I admit I have yet to figure out how two same-sex adults committing their lives to one another diminishes love.

3. Branding people as “intolerant” or “hateful” simply because they read Scripture differently is, well, too many ironies in the fire.

4. Slippery slope is a logical fallacy. We draw lines in every area of our lives. For example, you cannot legally drive or vote or get married one second before the allowable time. So forget about that inexorable slide into polygamy and bestiality. We draw lines.

5. Jesus says in John 16:12, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” Some areas of His culture, such as the institution of slavery and the treatment of women, would have to wait for the Holy Spirit’s leading. “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth ... ” (v. 13).

Yet Jesus is also here saying, “There will come a time when you can bear these things.” That time is now.

6. Billy Graham observes, “It’s God the Father’s job to judge, it’s the Holy Spirit’s job to convict, and it’s my job to love.” Paul Tillich adds, “The first duty of love is to listen.”

So I’ll conclude with the original ending.

“My fervent hope and prayer is that our church accept people with homosexual tendencies into our midst, that we will be known truly as Christ’s disciples: ‘By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another’ (John 13:35). May God rain His mercy on us.

“Finally, if Jesus hung around with prostitutes, lepers, and tax collectors, would He hang around with homosexuals? With lesbians, gays, and queers?

“You know the answer as well as I do. Yes, He would.

“And yes, He does.”

I once heard that it was easier to be saved that it was to be lost. How can this be?

So I began to process this morsel of thought.

First off: Who saves us? Jesus.

“You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21b Okay, easy enough.

Second point: How does He save us?

“That whoever believes in Him [Jesus] shall not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16b

“Because God so loved the world.” John 3:16a So why is it easier to be saved than to be lost? Because God loves us, loves me, loves YOU. But some think this isn’t true?

There were a lot of confessions turned in to the My Secret campaign a few weeks ago. Some were featured in The Collegian last week.

I have the sense there is a lot of uncertainty about who God is floating around in many hearts on this campus. Well, reader, if God has formed and created you then He will do and does everything He can to reveal his love to you and save you. Jesus wants more than anything to be in relationship with you, His son or daughter. I encourage you to mull over the thought that God LOVES you and SAVED you. I’ll let you in on a secret: It is easier to be saved than it is to be lost.

Friedensau, Germany Spring hits hard in Germany. The sun finally shows its face, the tulips unwrap from brown bulbs into vivacious red velvet petals, and the intoxicating smell of lilacs lilts through your open window, waking you from a long winter’s slumber. I’ve never experienced such a beautiful springtime as here at Theologische Hochschule Friedensau.

(Long name, but it’s basically a school of theology and social work with a couple international master’s programs offered and a German language course thrown in.)

When I arrived at the campus late one evening in September, I was disoriented, exhausted, and already terrified that I didn’t speak enough German to merit being here — it was completely overwhelming. The program assistant showed me my room and later took Kathrin and me on a tour of the campus. It was dark outside and she spoke only in German, to which we nodded and smiled feebly that we understood. I could get the general gist of how you had to use your special beeper on your key ring to open doors after hours and which buildings

classes would be held in, but it was mostly a swirling eddy of culture shock in my head.

Despite a scary beginning, this year has proved to be one of the best experiences of my life. What struck me the most was how little I actually know of the world in which I live. While being here, my perspective has been changed. I started to realize that the world doesn’t revolve around my country and me. The news we read in Germany is different than news received in the U.S. The crisis in Ukraine is not just a far away event that someone else has to deal with and I can just read about. It’s real here in Germany, with questions like where natural gas for Germany can be procured, other than from Russia.

There are students here who have family in the Ukraine or come from Kiev themselves.

I came here expecting just to learn German. But

I learned much more than articles, verb endings, and clauses. I have learned about the German mentality and culture. I have learned that they have a different type of bread for each day in a year.

That they don’t take their history lightly and still are hesitant about showing national pride.

During winter, always wear a scarf.

Seriously, always. Alcoholfree beer, billiards, and board games are the way to spend a Saturday night (at least here in Friedensau).

While studying abroad, I also got the opportunity to travel a lot. A couple of our breaks were several weeks long and I crisscrossed central and east Europe, making the most of my time off.

During these trips, I realized how huge the world is! A change of perspective was all I needed to see that my five-week trip through eight different countries covered approximately 0.004% of the

Earth’s land surface. While I’m extremely excited to be home by the middle of June, and feel like I never want to take another train anywhere, I have realized that I better get on it if I want to see the world. This year abroad opened my horizons.

Now, I’m at the end of my year here. I’m so comfortable living here now. Yes, it’s annoying to not have your own car, but you look at the gas prices, feel better about it, and then hop on the train for Berlin. An hour and a half later, you’re there and you have a subway and streetcar system built for a city of four million at your disposal.

On another note, the lack of Mexicaninspired food in Germany is appalling, but it’s tolerable. (Although if I were to advocate big-business-fast-food chains, I’d recommend Taco Bell here in a heartbeat.)

My advice to all you students out there is to take a year out and study abroad, if given the chance. I’ve met dozens of people I never would have met, traveled to several countries, learned a foreign language, and been enriched in every aspect of my life. I wouldn’t trade living in Germany this past year for anything less than a private jet and a pilot’s license.

I love art. I love paint on a canvas more than a tardy Walla Walla student loves a free ASWWU bike and donuts waiting outside CommUnity. I love art so much that I would become a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City just to visit a special exhibit even though I’ve only ever been to NYC three times in my life and nine months out of the year I live 2,725 miles away from the museum’s front steps.1 I’ve tried refraining from milk-washing the ink of this column in obscure art references and “go look at this painting” demands.

Why? I’ve honestly no idea. But on a recent weekender in Seattle, I spent an hour pouring over the greatest art book ever created, with a friend.2 It’s time I spare you no more; grab your art history books — we’re going on an art trip.

There is a beauty in broken things.

Go check it out. 2) “You don’t have to like it; you just have to consider it.”3 I disliked abstract expressionism for years and now I’m writing my senior thesis on Clyfford Still.

Go figure. 3) Have fun! Art can be blah blah boring or it can be like a treasure hunt with free pizza and a gift card to Chipotle at the end.4 If you don’t know it, go look it up.

The calling of Saint Matthew

We’ll motor first to Aix-en-Provence during the mid-to-late-19th to early-20th centuries. Known for his influential postimpressionist work, Paul Cézanne (1839– 1906) helped usher in the new century with early abstraction — loose brush strokes, brilliant color work and passage (where one color stroke passes seamlessly into another), multiple perspectives, and aesthetic intensity through cubism. Among my favorites are “Still Life with Apples and Oranges,” “Bathers,” and “Portrait of the Artist’s Father.” This last painting hints at the political waves of Cézanne’s France — LouisAuguste is shown reading L’Événement, a liberal newspaper, while a copy of “Sugar Bowl, Pears and Blue Cup” peers from the wall behind his chair.

Next we’ll jump back only 300 years and go to Rome to meet Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio5 (1571–1610). Caravaggio helped create the Baroque style, in a revolution of light and illumination, tenebrism (use of chiaroscuro, great contrasts of light and dark), and praise of nature. A striking Caravaggio that comes to mind is “The Calling of Saint Matthew,” a scene set in a dark customs house and dripping with golden light from the window. Jesus stands to the right, a thin halo above his head, and his arm is outstretched toward Matthew who, being curious, wonders if it is indeed he whom Jesus has called. Other brilliant Caravaggio works include Entombment and The Crucifixion of St. Peter.

The last stop we’ll make on the tour is near the present, where Cy Twombly (1928–2011) and his contemporary Quattro Stagioni,3 “The Four Seasons,” utilize color, movement, poetics, and classical mythology, among other echoes of past artists. These four pieces are half of a two-part set discussing the coming and going of seasons through a boat motif. Twombly includes poetic fragments, flowers and landscapes, and white gesso backgrounds over which to clearly see the dripping of paint down each large canvas. The contemporary artists of today insist that the viewer takes part in art, and so these panels invite the audience to be drawn into the emotion and color of each piece. Other great Twombly pieces include “Untitled (Bassano in Teverina),” and “Notes from Salalah.”

Each of these artists contributed a great deal to their own time and subsequent art. Now that I’ve discussed them with you, I’m all ready to delve into Romanesque architecture, Buddhist statues, and the artwork of the Book of Kells, not to mention any works by Mary Cassatt, Robert Motherwell, J.M.W. Turner, Raphael, or Delacroix, just to name a few. Art is everywhere, not just in the stuffy (and cold) museums; it’s in your clothes, your math homework, and a line of train cars. Open your eyes, open your mind, and go check out Clyfford Still.

Media: Wasteland or Wellspring? // By the Feature Editors

Media content and its influence on values, beliefs, and morals has long been a controversial topic. Television is accused of wasting time, hollywood movies of rarely reflecting reality, music of promoting promiscuity and a lack of responsibility. Though it may sometimes seem that all today’s media offers is empty entertainment, viewers can learn much about the world as it is and as it could be through the stories imagined and told on popular TV. This feature presents information about some of the more popular TV shows, including a synopsis and commonsensemedia.org ratings (higher ratings indicate more intense content, so watch with discernment), as well as the positive and negative aspects commonly discussed with each series.

Additionally, Sociology professor Emily Tillotson presents ways that viewers can better choose and interact with media. Though this feature could be used as a guide for your summer binge-watching, it has the potential to challenge readers and viewers to think critically about media and its affect on values.

Pros: It is safe to say that Game of Thrones is known for the fanaticism it incites in its audience. The 2011–present adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire has been lauded and criticised since its premier for its ability to incite a wide range of emotions from its audience (be prepared to feel enraged and inspired). GoT tells the story of the kingdom of Westeros as it plunges into war and the diverse, sometimes unlikely, characters who play parts in the unpredictable storyline.

It is rare that one can say this about a television series, but every acting performance is superb, the episodes are well written, and the score and cinematography are sublime. For those of you who have read the books, the adaptation of the storyline is fairly true to George R.R. Martin’s original writing, in spirit as well as in detail. There are strong, complicated, and interesting characters of both genders and many different ethnicities — making discussions of gender, class, and nativism particularly interesting and complex.

Cons:

GoT does not hold back when it comes to graphic language, nudity, violence, and gore. By anyone’s standard, GoT is pretty extreme. The storyline also includes supernatural elements: dragons, spirits, different sets of gods, a zombielike army of ice monsters, and certain characters who have the ability to see the future as well as enter the minds of animals, which may be uncomfortable for some.

Orange Is The New Black follows the life of white, middle-class, “yuppie” Piper as she serves time for a drug-related crime she committed 10 years ago. Piper must come to grips with the realities of race, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, gender, and class as they exist in the prison system — all while dealing with her fiancé and family who await her release.

Starring:

Taylor Schilling, Danielle Brooks, Taryn Manning

Pros:

This is one of the few shows you’ll find in which the majority of the cast is female and nonwhite. Nearly every class, sexual orientation, race, and background is represented by one or more characters in the show. The most visible transgender woman in Hollywood, Laverne Cox, sometimes steals the show while opening the eyes of viewers to the struggles of the transgender population. Orange Is the New Black fearlessly addresses the complexities of addiction, crime, sexism, poverty, privilege, sexuality, as well as the intersectional nature of the characters it portrays. There is no uncomplicated, stereotypical character in this show.

Cons:

Orange Is the New Black, in order to accurately represent the realities of prison life and the people in it, deals frankly and explicitly with sex (both homosexual and heterosexual), drug use, violence, and extremely coarse language. Because the show is committed to being honest, there are no idealized role models. Another note — Piper, when confronted by a religious fanatic inmate, openly denounces any belief in God and says she has a leaning towards what she calls “secular humanism,” a realist depiction which may be uncomfortable for some.

House of Cards (along with Lilyhammer and Orange is the New Black) headlines Netflix’s original programming. Unlike traditional shows, Netflix releases its originals a season at a time; season two of House of Cards was released at midnight on Valentine’s Day. Netflix knows its market — 668,000 people watched all of season two within 72 hours of its release.1 House of Cards follows Frank Underwood, a congressman, on his Machiavellian rampage against the political comrades he believes betrayed him.

Netflix has not held back with its original programming — House of Cards’ first season cost Netflix over $100 million. It boasts a star-studded cast and crew. The result is, at times, spectacular. Viewers find themselves empathizing with even the most unsavory characters. While Frank is often portrayed as manipulative and deceitful, there are moments when we see his softer side.

Cons:

The entire premise of House of Cards is revenge. Frank isn’t afraid to use any tool to accomplish his will, whether influence, money, blackmail, drugs, or sex. The entire show, as seen in its intro montage, is about plunging into the dark side of politics, and we see unsavory people doing unsavory things.

SHERLOCK 24-year-old aspiring writer Hannah abruptly learns about being an adult when her parents proclaim they will no longer financially support her, as they have done for several years after she graduates from college. She lives in Brooklyn with her small circle friends as they try to navigate their twenties, “one mistake at a time.”

This comedy, narrated by the character Ted Mosby to his children, tells the story of how Ted met his wife. It focuses on Ted and his group of friends living in New York throughout their twenties and thirties, with all of their relationships, random encounters, and funny stories.

This show has been called our generation’s Sex and the City, and is a raw, unembellished look at the modern life of millennials. Themes include the struggles of not having a good job (or one at all) after college, our relationships in this new age of connectivity, and the drive to be innovative when the world seems to be against you. Producer Judd Apatow stated that he hoped the show would provide men with an insight into “realistic females.”

Cons:

As mentioned, this show is one of the rawest, most realistic, and most graphic shows of our age, especially when it comes to relationships and sexuality. Various humiliations, disasters, and rare triumphs are left unvarnished. Girls doesn’t push anything under the rug, and highlights numerous relevant issues. This show is not for anyone who is easily offended. Girls has been praised for its portrayal of women and female friendship, but also criticized as classist, racist, transphobic, and misguided.

A reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic series, BBC’s Sherlock features the extremely bright but socially inept “Consulting Detective” Sherlock Holmes and his unlikely sidekick and best friend Dr. John Watson as they solve crimes in modern-day London.

Pros:

A major theme in the nine-season saga is finding the person with whom you should spend the rest of your life. It’s also relentlessly funny: if you watch from beginning to end, you will enjoy many inside jokes that continue through all seasons.

Cons:

Casual sex and drinking are common in the lives of these Friends-like characters. It can also be frustrating to watch all nine seasons without the mother being revealed (although if you can’t wait, you can now skip to the last season since the show ended this year).

Pros:

Conan Doyle’s classic detective series has been rehashed and redone so many times, it’s hard to imagine that another TV show or movie could bring something new to the table. BBC does just that, though, as they masterfully bring Sherlock and Dr. Watson to life in believable, fascinating, unpredictable, and lovable ways.

The acting is superb, the writing is even better, and the cinematography is unique. Those used to American television’s cinematography will find Sherlock refreshing.

Cons:

Those who have trouble with suspense, mild violence, occasional (always partial) nudity, and casual references to sex and substances should probably avoid Sherlock. Also, there are only three episodes per season, making the wait between seasons difficult for those who like to simply barrel through many episodes at once.

watching television like an academic

Engaging in popular entertainment is a way to engage with the larger culture around us and escape from the pressures of reality for a brief thirty minutes to an hour. That said, I could take the entire TV industry to task for the lowest common denominator plot lines and stock characters that are everywhere on TV, but isn’t this a little too easy? Part of what makes TV interesting is what it tells us about ourselves.

Cultural studies provides some fun ideas about how to watch and understand TV and movies. Two examples are the Bechdel Test and the male gaze. The Bechdel Test assesses the representation of women in film and TV. Programs must contain two women, with names, who talk about something other than men to pass. The great thing about the Bechdel Test is how quickly and easily it exposes the dearth of women, and quality roles for women, currently available. Then there is the male gaze — depicting a story line entirely from a male perspective. Women are thrown in here and there to advance the plot, often doubling more as beautiful furniture than well-developed characters. This is how much of our pop culture is portrayed. And movies and shows that narrate story lines from the female perspective are usually dubbed chick flicks. Generally, men refuse to watch them. Like non-white groups who are also highly underrepresented in TV and film, women have become accustomed to the male gaze and will watch TV and films from both perspectives.

For example, have you noticed that many popular TV shows rely on a “medieval” or back-in-the-day context? Most fail to pass the Bechdel test or depict a story line from a non-white, non-male perspective.

Unsurprisingly, these shows that predate modern weaponry are often the most graphically violent.

Does that tell us something about how non-violent norms have become normalized in contemporary times? It might. Contemporary American life is now fairly devoid of legal physical combat opportunities. It is mundane and likely to involve sitting behind a computer — not nearly as cinematic. The top cable show in America, Game of Thrones, depicts violence worse than any serial killer episode in our pantheon of crime dramas. So, this suggests there is a substantial market

for violence even as our society becomes measurably less and less violent.

What about gender norms? Have you noticed that if you want to depict overtly sexist storylines, you need to go back in time a bit — perhaps to the era of Mad Men? It is fairly hard to imagine some of the Mad Men storylines flying on a show like Modern Family. Plus, going back in time also helps justify the underrepresentation of nonwhites because racism likely excluded folks of color from these privileged workplaces.

How convenient. This may also explain why Mad Men isn’t listed as a top show by Neilson Ratings for Latino and African American viewers.

This is not to say that violence, racism, or sexism don’t exist in our culture today.

They certainly do. But they are now thought of as deviant, not regular. And, like a lot of deviant things, they are trickier to talk about and depict. Fairytale, fantasybased dramas are a safer harbor if you are trying to meet a market with a taste for violence, racism, and sexism (and certainly this market exists, but that’s another article).

Plus, depicting violence, racism, and sexism through the lens of time allows us to explore these issues from a politically safe distance — without directly implicating ourselves and our own problems with sexism, racism, and violence — ah, the safety of “history.”

In TV shows set in contemporary times other interesting trends seem to say something about our values too. Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and others largely center around demanding careers — professionals with graduate degrees pursuing high levels of power and status. These characters are rarely shown in a domestic setting and when they are, they often live alone and seem incompetent, lonely, and adrift. This too tells us something about what our culture sees as serious and important — and having a high-pay, high-status job is a big part of that picture. Some characters do marry and create families, but this is often followed-up quickly by infidelity, divorce, and ruin. The show’s climactic moments of achievement are still largely found at work. In the scripts the characters sometimes fantasize about an idyllic domestic scene (jam-making has shown up a lot on Scandal), but quickly

snap back to reality and go back to work.

This too, tells us something about current American values and priorities — work is first, family life is a distant second. This lines up with some of the data we have about the productivity of the American worker and the American worker’s marriage. According to the International Labor Organization, U.S. workers are first among industrialized countries in annual hours worked. The American Psychological Association estimates the U.S. divorce rate at somewhere between 40–50% for first marriages and higher for subsequent marriages. So, is life imitating art or vice versa?

For myself, I take my cues from my colleagues in cultural studies and avoid trying to convince myself that TV is

beneath me or adopting some other vaguely elitist sentiment. Instead of taking a chiding posture towards what is on TV (and the rest of the media), I focus on how I take in TV and film by using the Bechdel test and other tools to critically approach the media. Pop culture is a useful snapshot about who we are, who we want to be, and how good (or bad) we are at correcting our inequalities. This is what culture — high art and pop culture — is supposed to do, further our collective discussion of the ideas and problems of our time. So, watching your favorite shows doesn’t have to be a mindless waste. It is actually a landscape rich with cultural information — and for some academics, it’s homework.

The Bechdel Test The Bechdel Test (/'bεkdәl/ bek-dәl) asks whether a work of fiction features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man. Many contemporary works fail this test of gender bias. To pass:

On July 3, 2012, The Amazing SpiderMan took to the big screen and immediately a line was drawn in the dirt. Separating mice from men, there arose the debate between the former and the latter: Tobey Maguire v. Andrew Garfield, The Amazing v. the original. Sparked by production rights (big surprise), Sony needed to continue to produce Spider-Man films to retain control.

Though initially the corporation sought to make a Spider-Man 4, they obviously decided to reboot and refresh the cast and directorship.

The general reception of the new series has been positive, with high praise going to Andrew Garfield for adopting and growing an already-established character. Garfield and Maguire portrayed very different characters, however, and many dislike the easy parallel between Garfield and Edward Cullen.

Though Superman and Clark Kent shared physical excellence, and Batman and Bruce Wayne shared seemingly limitless funds, one of my favorite parts about Maguire’s Spider-Man is that you couldn’t suspect him.

Maguire portrays Parker as a complete dork,

but doubled as the bold, upright, Spidey with impeccable coordination. On the other hand, Garfield portrays Parker with heroic attributes to begin with, alongside more stylish hair and skateboarding. Though there isn’t anything essentially wrong with not being an outcast, I appreciated the obvious contrast between Maguire’s alter-egos.

Villains bring up a whole other issue. In The Amazing Spider-Man, Dr. Curt “The Lizard” Connors has little connection to the protagonist, a necessary aspect to the Spidey v. villain story. The epitome of a ruptured spirit epically rampaging is Doc. Oc., a villain who was portrayed beautifully and was not subjected to the same pitiful CGI mutilation.

As I am not a dedicated comic/film enthusiast, I’ve only discovered the tip of the iceberg as far as the contrast between the two stories goes. Either way, in both films a common thread is a villain deserving empathy. From tragic loss to goodintentioned scientific mishaps, villains are not evil characters — simply unfortunate and relatable. Both veins and story lines grow on the viewer; provide high-quality entertainment; and I, for one, am happy to see Sony on top of the Spidey rights and keeping Parker out of the Avengers.

Summer is nearly upon us! ... even though the weather periodically freaks out. When I think of summer food, I think of burgers, corn dogs, potato salad, barbecue — I basically think of the 4th of July. So today, I’m sharing side dishes for a yummy final course, which is coming next week.

You’ll find that this potato salad isn’t what you’re used to, but I promise that’s a good thing; it’s lick-the-plate-clean good.

And sweet potato fries? Well, you can’t go wrong. Using corn starch is the best way to get crispy fries, but it’s not necessary.

Either way, just make sure you use enough oil so your fries don’t stick to the pan.

CURRIED POTATO SALAD INGREDIENTS - 2 lbs. yukon gold or other all-purpose potato - 1 handful spinach, rinsed - ½ red bell pepper, finely chopped - ½ small red onion, finely chopped - ½ cup unsweetened coconut milk - 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar - 2 tsp. curry powder - 1 tsp. paprika - Sprinkle of cayenne - Salt to taste

Chop potatoes into about ¾-inch cubes. Boil potatoes until tender — about 10 minutes. Drain potatoes and mix in spinach. This allows the spinach to wilt without cooking too much. While potatoes cool, whisk coconut milk, vinegar, curry powder, paprika, cayenne, and salt till combined.

Transfer potatoes and spinach to a mixing bowl.

Add the coconut milk mixture, peppers, and onions, and stir to combine. Taste for flavor and adjust accordingly.

POTATO fries INGREDIENTS - 2 large sweet potatoes - 2–3 tbsp. cornstarch (opt.)

- Olive oil Preheat oven to 425°F. Peel and cut sweet potatoes into fries, no thicker than ½ inch. Rinse and drain fries. They should be dry but still be wet enough for the cornstarch to stick. Put the cornstarch in a plastic bag and add the fries. Make sure there is air in the bag, twist the top, and shake vigorously.

Remove fries and place on baking sheets. Coat the fries with enough oil so to crisp and not stick.

Spread out the fries; if they’re too crowded, they’ll steam rather than crisp. Bake about 12 minutes.

Once bottom of the fries starts to crisp, flip and bake another 5–10 minutes.

The Packing Question Mark // I have seen far too many people who were hauling way too much stuff around the world. There were people in airports and train stations with two, three, even four bags! What are they taking with them?

Traveling the world does require luggage, but not as much as one might expect. Here in the Travel section this week, I have outlined some of the key necessities to pack while traveling abroad.

what about clothes?

I think the fewer bags you take the happier you’ll be by the end of your trip. Unless you are planning on staying in really nice hotels, riding in first-class train cars, and taking taxis everywhere, you will probably be the one doing 100% of your baggage transport. I would recommend taking one main bag, and one smaller bag, such as a small backpack that you could use to carry a laptop, camera, water bottle, or jacket along with you.

Any number of bags greater than one makes it difficult for one person to carry through any place that has lots of people or stairs. Ideally it is best to have a single bag that is large enough to fit your smaller bag inside of it when traveling between destinations. It just makes life SO much simpler.

Obviously climate, country, and gender are all important things to consider and each of those factors will contribute to what should be taken on a trip, but there are general packing principles that will ease your life while traveling. When I was with my brother backpacking in Europe last year, I managed to go 21 days in one pair of jeans. Not that I’m proud of that accomplishment, but only having one pair of pants with me was great because I didn’t have the extra space or desire to carry another heavy pair with me. I think people generally pack more clothes than they will ever need on a trip, so it is a good idea to only take what you think you will absolutely need. And if you end up needing something, I’m sure you’ll be able to purchase a cheap replacement somewhere along the way. Packing too little clothing is better than packing too much.

What about those things you didn’t realize you’d need until it was too late?

Here is a quick list: earplugs, lip balm, allergy medication, contact solution, a water bottle, a power adapter, a watch, socks, a toothbrush, hand sanitizer, band aids, and headphones. Sometimes you forget the items that seem the most obvious, but these small items can make a world of difference, especially if you are traveling to a new country or city with a new climate where you aren’t used to the sunshine, allergens, or local norms. You’ll never know what unexpected circumstances will arise and it is always better to do like the Boy Scouts and “be prepared.”

item of the week An Extra Set of Eyes Okay, maybe not actual eyes, but if you have corrective lenses, it would be a good idea to bring another set of glasses or contacts in case your main pair gets lost, broken, or stolen. It isn’t much fun to go sightseeing without your sight!

There are now CrossFit Games televised on ESPN, CrossFit gyms starting up across the nation, and tons of bloggers chattering about the sport. Despite all this popularity, I realized that I really don’t know much about CrossFit. I mean, I’ve heard about CrossFit, but what is it and why are those who do it so stoked about it? This week, I decided to answer those questions.

The official CrossFit webpage claimed that their goal was not to be specialized, but general. The page claimed that the type of fitness that CrossFit aims for is the kind you obtain from “combat, survival, many sports, and life.” It is this kind of fitness that encompasses the entire body, aiming to improve cardio/respiratory fitness, strength, balance, flexibility, quickness, power, etc. This is vastly different from going to the gym just to do some curls and get big arms. The goal of CrossFit is to make a participant into an athlete with the highest level of fitness possible for that individual.

Although I have yet to try a CrossFit workout in an actual CrossFit gym, I asked around and did some research about what an actual session of CrossFit might look like. Most begin with some type of dynamic warm-up that involves movements that prepare you for the movements to come in the actual workout.

The workout itself, often referred to as the workout of the day (WOD), could involve a number of things. According to Manuel Armesto, a sophomore here at WWU who has been doing CrossFit for a year and a half, the WOD might involve something as simple as pull-ups, pushups, running, or jumping rope. It may also include more complicated things such as Olympic lifting, gymnastics, and swimming. Some other movements from CrossFit workouts include dips, squats, box jumps, burpees, deadlifts, and handstand pushups. The list is quite extensive. These workouts are often timed and can be as short as two minutes or as long as nearly an hour. Within reason, CrossFit is for everyone.

You don’t have to already be an athlete to start this sport. That’s because CrossFit workouts use scalability to tailor to each individual. This means that the intensity at which a workout is done as well as the weight lifted or reps performed by each participant can be adjusted to his or her level of fitness.

In other words, the goal is not to make a different workout for each individual, but rather to tailor the workout to match with each individual’s current abilities. Every participant, from a fireman to an elderly librarian, can enjoy being part of the same workout with slight modifications. Also, through some CrossFit education, even beginners can learn the skills necessary to complete the moves safely.

Manuel Armesto also told me that the bonds formed at your local box can be very special. With so many people doing the same workout, it is the perfect place to encourage one another and push each other to finish the workout. If you are looking for a supportive community with which to get in shape, CrossFit might be for you.

College Spelled Out in 18 Points // The past few weeks I’ve been a little nostalgic. Between listening to my 2010 freshman playlist (“Freshman Jammin’!”) and creeping on my own Facebook photo albums (“Soundtrack to my Summer 2011”), I’ve realized I’ve learned a lot. With graduation right around the corner, here is a happy little list of some of the life lessons I’ve learned the past four years of college. In no particular order, I give you this: 1) Food is expensive: “Strawberries are $5.99? Where did they pick these? Atlantis?”

2) Nobody cares about your SAT scores or what other schools you were considering: “Oh, you got into Harvard? Cool story, bro.

See you in Intro to Music.”

3) People will use “we’re in college” as an excuse for anything: “Oh you ate your dinner with a fork you found on the ground? Well, we’re in college.”

4) If you have a car, everybody wants to be your friend: “Hey, can you drive me somewhere? It’s pretty urgent. It’s appetizer happy hour at Applebee’s.”

5) Getting emails is no longer fun. In fact, it’s awful: “So. Many. Emails. *ding* GAH!”

6a) You can wear jeans at least five times without washing them: “Yep. Still good.”

6b) Sorting laundry is not actually a thing anymore: “Wash all the clothes at once!”

7) Learning to scan Sparknotes is a valuable tool: “So there was a man. And he did things.

The end.” If the book isn’t on Sparknotes, you literally don’t know what to do: “Wait, what do you mean ‘Contemporary Literature’?”

8) The week before a big test is not a week of review, it’s actually a class-wide scouting session: “So, who in here is going to make a group study guide?”

17) If you wear your PE clothes to class every day, people think you are going through some kind of life trial. “Cool nylon shorts ... are you doing okay?”

18) Any 10-minute break can be naptime: “This pile of books looks comfy. I’ll just lie down here and —”

Confession Last week I went looking for a place to study in the library. I found a room that was empty with the lights off — only it wasn’t empty. To the two people that I interrupted doing extracurricular activities: a library?
