A Message from the Director A very warm welcome from School of Politics and Global Studies at ASU! It has been five months since my family and I made a transcontinental move from Florida to Arizona. We very much enjoy the vibe in the Valley and already feel home in one of the fastest growing and cosmopolitan cities of the United States. Foremost, I would like to extend our gratitude to my predecessor Magda Hinojosa, now Dean of Social Sciences at ASU, for her splendid service to our School for three years. Rick Herrera, now Emeritus Professor, ensured a smooth leadership transition as Interim Director. Thank you, Rick. We all appreciate our dedicated and resourceful staff who enable us to serve our students and conduct innovative research with holistic public value. We welcomed several accomplished scholars to our School during the year. Stella Rouse, who joined us from University of Maryland, is an expert on youth and Latino politics in the U.S. Stella also serves as the Director of Hispanic Center at ASU. Steven Smith has a long and illustrious career and held faculty positions at the University of Minnesota, George Washington University, Northwestern University, and Washington University before coming to ASU. Steven is one of the leading experts on Congress in the country. Laine Munir is our newest Teaching Assistant Professor. Laine, who is a political ethnographer focusing on politics of gender and ethnicity and conflict resolution, taught at African Leadership University in Kigali, Rwanda for several years. We also said farewell to George Thomas who transitioned into Emeritus Professor after a distinguished career spanning more than four decades at ASU. As scholars who study human cooperation, conflict, and governance, 2023 has kept all of us very busy. As you will see in the pages of this report, our faculty continue to produce knowledge in pursuit of a sustainable and secure future for all. Meanwhile, our School offers a rich variety of life-transforming practices including our signature internship and study abroad programs that help our undergraduate and graduate students achieve their professional dreams. We also take special pride in our MA programs and Initiatives and Centers that continue to grow and offer innovative forms of academic education with practical relevance. Our alumni play a special role in our efforts as they continue to support our School in many different ways. I invite you to explore the pages of our annual report providing a glimpse of developments and accomplishments of our school. I would also love to hear your suggestions and ideas about how to make our school better. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me!

His research explores the connections between international economic ties and politics, with a focus on the use and consequences of sanctions as well as the link between trade and armed conflict. “I have tried to hit the ground running with ideas to improve and modernize our graduate programs,” Peterson says. “For example, I am working on an initiative to replace minor field comprehensive exams with a paper, which would give students earlier exposure to the research process, including practice with peer-review and revision.”

The Center for Latina/os and American Politics For The Center for Latina/os and American Politics Research (CLAPR), 2023 has been a year of exciting growth in terms of people, projects, and priorities. One of our major achievements at the start of the year was a two-day retreat, where we huddled to crystalize our Center vision and goals. Through a pilot “seed grant” initiative, we expanded the number of CLAPR faculty affiliates to include SPGS colleagues as well as those with appointments in other units, whose respective research agendas either already, or could, speak directly to the policy and political circumstances of Latinas/os/x. In 2024 we are keen to share advances in various projects, including, among others: • The Faces of Inequality: A project that examines U.S. state-level relationships between African American, Asian Americans, and Latino shares of the population and a selection of policy outcomes for each group with respect to education, incarceration, and health, among other indicators of inequities and/or disparities • The State of Latinos: An effort to coproduce reports with community members that summarize and center the state of life for Latinas/os/x vis-à-vis a selection of policy and political issues • The Latinx Organization Archive: A project advancing the study of American politics by centering the work of Latinx communities across the United States while simultaneously building a pipeline of Latinx researchers • The Arizona and Latino elections survey database: An effort to inventory existing survey databases that center Latinos in Arizona and the southwest region

Centers & Programs Cultivating leaders of the future Twenty SPGS students participated in the highly competitive statewide Arizona Legislature and Government Program, where they received a front row seat to the legislative process. Pictured is the 2023 group. The school is also launching a program in 2024 that pairs students with Arizona government relations firms, called the Government Relations Internship Program (GRIP).

Experiencing the nation’s capital Through the Policy Design Studio and Internship Program as well as the Capital Scholars Program, students landed internships in Washington, D.C. and earned course credit. Students interned at organizations like The Madison Group, the White House Historical Association and even federal agencies like the Department of Health & Human Services.

Exploring the world Students also had the opportunity to explore the world this summer, traveling and studing in North Macedonia and Ireland. Pictured here is the group that went to North Macedonia. Students visited three cities in the Southern Balkans: Skopje, Ohrid and Thessaloniki.

Undergraduate Student Highlights Our undergraduate students have landed coveted internships, received Fulbright awards and bolstered their professional portfolios all while fulfilling their academic journeys. This is only a snapshot of what our students have accomplished this year. Isabelle Kinney, was named The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences spring 2023 Dean’s Medalist for SPGS, graduating with concurrent degrees in Political Science, Religion, Politics and Global Affairs and French. “One thing I learned at ASU that surprised me was how kind and empathetic the professors can be. When I got into research I was expecting alot of hard deadlines and admonishment if I did something wrong,” she said. “That has been very far from my experience. I have made plenty of mistakes, but the professors I have worked for have been very kind and understanding.”

Claire Mullings, an incoming political science graduate, was also recently named the fall 2023 Dean’s Medalist for SPGS. Isabel Haas, a senior double majoring in Global Studies and Applied Mathematics, has her sights set on a career in foreign service, after participating in the Policy Design Studio and Internship Program. “The opportunity to work closely with and get feedback from former U.S. ambassadors who are invested in your education and want to see you succeed is huge, especially if you continue to stay in connection with them following the end of the class,” Haas said. “Not to mention, you learn so much about diplomacy in action and a particular region.” Arnulfo Acedo, a Global Studies senior, was the first-ever American participant in the Young Bled Strategic Forum, an event part of the Bled Strategic Forum, an international conference based in Slovenia.

Representing the Mexican-American community, Arizona State University and the United States of America...A privilege experience and honorable nomination that will forever be cherished to the fullest extent.” — Arnulfo Acedo,

Graduate Student Highlights Our graduate students have had an incredible year, receiving grants for research and fieldwork, working closely with faculty and networking with the ASU community at-large all while advancing their careers. Fares Abdullah, from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, graduated with a Master’s degree in Political Psychology and said the program was on his radar as soon as he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of La Verne in California. “I loved politics, and I loved psychology,” he said. “I really felt at the center of a lot of the questions I had about the world could be found in between our own ears as humans.” Ph.D. student Camila Paez-Bernal received the inaugural Director’s Grant for Dissertation Research for 2023-24. Netty Herawaty, a Ph.D. student, was awarded an American-Indonesian Cultural & Educational Foundation grant in July.

Visual artist and Masters in Global Security student Zeina Barakeh said the program’s curriculum enriches the art she creates. “I chose this degree to learn about war from another angle than the one I have experienced growing up in Beirut …” Barakeh said. “I am primarily a visual artist. I am pursuing the MA in Global Security as a form of structured research for my artwork, which is about war, polarization and colonialism.”

The grant greatly benefits my research as it needs fieldwork and interviews in Indonesia. [It] is given to Indonesian students studying Ph.D. in the U.S.but have to go back to Indonesia to generate data for their research. As a recipient of AICEF, I am formally a part of the American-Indonesian society that aims to bridge the cultural gap between the two countries.” — Netty Herawaty Political Science (Ph.D. student)

Alumni in the spotlight

Fostering abundant professional networking opportunities Through virtual and in-person alumni panels, students connected with SPGS graduates and discussed the possible career opportunities degrees in Political Science and Global Studies offers. Alumni Hailey Alcaraz Hershkowitz, Tim Suan, Joe Andrews, Alexandra Bice and Ricardo Uribe-Campos participated in our first panels this fall!

Diving into entrepreneurship Zoe Isaac, ‘19, started a college essay business, Calliope Creations, with Kevin Sheh, her former high school English teacher. The business offers individualized coaching sessions and hosts group seminars for students applying to college. “Students have told us they have been taught to start with the prompt. Our approach is different — we start with the self, the student,” Isaac said. “That leads to essays that are authentic.” Sheh added that “Zoe always says we’re also in the business of empowerment and there is nothing more empowering and joyful than knowing yourself.”

Homecoming 2023 Honoree Vada Manager,‘83, was awarded the Alumni Service Award, which recognizes distinguished and extraordinary service to ASU and the Alumni Association by an alumnus at this year’s Homecoming Game. Manager currently serves on the School’s advisory board, and has served as both an ASU Trustee and an Alumni Association Council member and was on the Arizona Board of Regents while still an undergraduate student.
