Letter from the Dean Dear Alumni, Students and Friends, As you read this next issue of the Fertile Ground magazine, we are excited to share with you accomplishments and news from the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. We appreciate your interest and investment as we strive to build upon a standard of excellence that has become characteristic of an institution known and loved by the communities it serves and the lives it has touched—including alumni and friends locally, regionally, nationally and globally.

During my last two years as Dean and Director of Land-Grant Programs, it has been a pleasure to watch our work as educators, researchers, and community partners develop.

Our vision in the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences is to succeed as a premier land-grant program which promotes excellence by providing teaching, research and outreach activities, delivered by cutting edge technology, to our students and the communities we serve.

We are moving forward in the development and execution of a strategy that considers the ever-changing landscape of agriculture. This strategy aims to build on our many strengths as we provide practical knowledge—grounded in trailblazing research—to our constituents, while educating the next generation of agriculturalists. Our initiatives align with enhancing the educational experience, maintaining faculty excellence, expanding and developing research, and developing community partnerships.

We appreciate your time and effort, your continued willingness to lend your expertise, your assistance of our graduates in their job searches, and of course, your generous financial support.

As we continue to distinguish ourselves in the evolving field of higher education, be assured that everything we do will remain true to Alcorn State University’s long-held values and tradition of excellence. editor’s note I

n the years that have passed since the Office of Land-Grant Communications last issued a magazine, many things have changed.

New programs have been added. Others have faded away. A new generation of students enliven the halls of our institution who respond to a new message, although their experiences are similar to the wave of alumni who have walked the same halls before them. Many of us, myself included, are among the waves of those that have come before, and therefore share a special love for the University.

Knowing the gravity of the responsibility of representing such a beloved brand, my team and I have taken care to ensure that we carry on the torch in a way that both honors tradition and embraces the future.

Having “cut my teeth,” as an intern in the Office of Land-Grant Communications years before returning as a staff member, I had the privilege to witness the evolution of the School. One thing that has remained constant is a very engaged community of alumni, students,

faculty, staff and locals. Their smiles and laughs, their interests, their events, and discoveries are what constitute the “culture” of the School of Agriculture & Applied Sciences and are what we hope to convey.

As an intern, I spent many weeks “in the weeds” of crafting a magazine under the carful tutelage of my mentor and friend Dr. Freda M. Lawrence, who formerly led the Office of Land-Grant Communications, and served as editor in chief of its former magazine, “The Fertile Ground.” As a student, I often grumbled about her incredibly finnicky attention to accuracy and detail. As a director, I could never be more grateful for the lessons it taught me.

As you read this publication, we hope that you—our community—will see yourselves reflected in these pages. We hope that new and returning readers alike will gain valuable information and feel the invitation leap off of the pages to join come our “culture.” In the School of Agriculture & Applied Sciences, our “culture” is AgriCulture.

Student Spotlights AGRICULTURE STUDENT LEARNS VALUABLE SKILLS AT USDA

W

hile some students spend their summer break relaxing, there are others who choose to advance year-round.

Luther Thompson, II is taking the necessary steps to accomplish his dreams of becoming a Soil Conservationist as he spent his fourth summer as an intern with the United States Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA–NRCS).

The USDA offers different “Pathway Opportunities” for students and recent graduates to work in agriculture, science, technology, mathematics, environment, and business. Internships are offered to help students and recent graduates gain practical experience in their desired fields.

An agribusiness management major, Thompson’s love for agriculture began at an early age. “When I was 14, my dad had me help him to garden and cultivate the soil. When I saw our hard work manifest, I was amazed.

From that year until college, I planted watermelons and

watched them grow every summer. That’s when I fell in love with agriculture.”

During his internship, Thompson was stationed at a service center in Alliance, Nebraska. His responsibilities included checking windbreaks (used to protect soil from erosion); reviewing Conservation Reserve Program renewals and contracts; going into the field to check mid-contract management (used to measure established plant communities); exploring pollinator habits; handson training and more.

Michael Trusclair, USDA 1890 program liaison, plays an important role in orchestrating internship opportunities for pre- and post-graduate students. “It is important for students to gain knowledge and experience with internships in order to help them decide on their future career,” he said.

Thompson encourages students seeking meaningful internships to be flexible and not limit themselves to just one locale. Throughout this process, he has learned to be proactive, absorb as much as possible, and go above and beyond the call of duty. “My opportunity was truly a blessing,” he said.

Thompson’s USDA internships were arranged through the Pathways program, which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore federal careers. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for growth into a permanent job in civil service.

Thompson recounts one of the highlights of his experience as when he met Sonny Perdue, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. “I also enjoyed learning about new plants in different rangelands and our Conservation Reserve Programs,” he said.

SHIRISSA THOMPSON’S PASSION FOR ANIMALS GAINS HER ACCEPTANCE INTO PURDUE VETERINARY SCHOOL

S

hirissa Thompson, a graduate of the Alcorn State University veterinary science program, is currently enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Thompson’s love for animals began early in childhood.

“I’ve wanted to be a vet since I was seven years old. Growing up, my family supported my dreams and exposed me to all kinds of animals. We had everything from horses to dogs, rabbits and tortoises. As I got older, I would volunteer at the local animal shelters and the zoo,” Thompson says.

In addition to her family, Thompson identifies Alcorn professors Dr. Cassandra Vaughn, assistant professor of animal science and University veterinarian, and Dr. Melissa Mason, assistant professor of animal science, as key contributors to her success.

“Dr. Vaughn took us to a veterinary symposium at Tuskegee [University], which sparked my interest and opened my eyes to the opportunities available to me. She, along with Dr. Mason, helped to ensure that I had the academic support that I needed to succeed.”

Thompson’s long-term goal is to serve as a veterinarian in the United States Army. After her tour, she would like to work for a hometown practice.

She advises any student who wants to follow in her footsteps to volunteer, make good grades, stay motivated, and check out the prerequisites for veterinary school early during their undergraduate career.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENT TE’YAH WRIGHT PLACES FIRST AT WOMEN RISE STEM SYMPOSIUM

T

he School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences congratulates junior environmental science major Te’Yah Wright. On Sept. 12, Wright placed first at the 2019 Women RISE Research in STEM and STEM Education Symposium for her poster presentation on the “Impact of Invasive Species on Native Plant Communities.”

Held at the Eagle Ridge Conference Center in Raymond, Mississippi, the event was sponsored by Jackson State University and the Central Mississippi chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. It was open to all African-American female STEM affiliates at each of the five HBCUs in Mississippi — Jackson State University, Alcorn State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Tougaloo College, and Rust College.

“I was in pure amazement when my name was called as the first-place winner,” said Wright. “There were so many amazing research posters, and everyone really worked hard. In my eyes, everyone was a winner.”

According to Dr. Jacqueline McComb, assistant professor of environmental science, the purpose of the symposium was to expose underrepresented minorities to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics research.

“There are numerous African American women completing graduate and undergraduate programs in STEM disciplines,” said McComb. “I hope to prevent African American female students from accepting societal beliefs that blame disparities in math and science on racial or gender inferiorities.”

The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. advocates on behalf of black women to promote leadership, development and gender equity in the areas of health, education, and economic empowerment.

Staff Spotlights Dr. Elizabeth Myles, “a Beacon of Light” B

orn and raised in Pattison, Mississippi, Dr. Elizabeth Myles is a 1991 graduate of Port Gibson High School. Myles currently serves as the associate director for the Mississippi Small Farm and Agribusiness Center (MSFAC) in the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. Her role includes providing leadership in developing and implementing marketing programs for MSFAC, as well as small farmers and small-scale agricultural enterprises in the state of Mississippi. Myles also works as an adjunct professor/instructor with the University. In this role, she prepares and delivers lectures to undergraduate and graduate students on topics such as foundations of academic and social success in college.

Myles received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Jackson State University and her master’s in guidance education from Alcorn State University. She received her doctorate degree in urban higher education from Jackson State University. She is a member of the Mu Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Lambda National Honor Society; Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda; National Women in Agriculture Association; Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group, and the Jackson State University Farmers Network, among others.

Myles enjoys the opportunities that her career provides to help others. She describes herself as a “beacon of light” to anyone in need, especially to fellow faculty, staff, and students. Providing individuals with educational resources and encouragement is something that she takes pride in doing.

“What has been most rewarding in my career is working with the small farmers.

To be able to identify major markets such as Walmart, Kroger, and CH Robinson, and to help small farmers get their products sold in these markets, is a huge accomplishment,” she said.

Myles also serves as host of the “Marketing with Myles” radio show, which airs every Tuesday from 2 – 2:30 p.m. on Alcorn’s public radio station, WPRL 91.7 FM. The show is designed to inform listening audiences about topics surrounding agricultural marketing such as research, branding, promotion, and diversification.

It also serves as a platform for farmers, buyers, agricultural professionals and agribusinesses.

Her advice to others is to be passionate about and love what you do. She encourages everyone to try to make a difference in the world. “Never give up,

always try to succeed, and be a selfmotivator,” she said.

Myles is happily married to Jerome Myles, gospel music director for WPRL 91.7 FM, and they have five children. They reside in Natchez, Mississippi.

dean Edmund Buckner Joins USDA NAREEE Advisory Board and Southern Regional Aquaculture Center Board of Directors T

he National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory Board (NAREEEAB) has welcomed Dr. Edmund R. Buckner, dean and director of Land-Grant Programs for the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, to its array of counselors. He serves in Category E. – the National Aquaculture Association, which advises U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, as well as to land-grant colleges and universities, on top priorities and policies for food and agricultural research, education, extension and economics.

His term began in the fall of 2018 and will end in the fall of 2020.

The NAREEEAB’s purpose is to contribute to effective federal agricultural research, education and economic programs through broad stakeholder feedback and sound science. The advisory board also, by order, provides reports and recommendations to the appropriate agricultural committees of the U.S. Congress.

Buckner has also been selected to serve as the 1890 Research Representative on the Board of Directors for the USDA-NIFA Southern Regional Aquaculture Center (SRAC).

The SRAC is one of five Regional Aquaculture Centers established

by Congress in 1985. Its mission is to support aquaculture research, development, demonstration and education to enhance viable and profitable U.S. aquaculture production. The 13 states (and two territories) represented by SRAC are Alabama; Arkansas; Florida; Georgia; Kentucky; Louisiana; Mississippi; North Carolina; Oklahoma; South Carolina, Tennessee; Texas; Virginia; the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

As a board member, Buckner will contribute to the administration and management of the regional center’s initiatives. He will also help to address regional aquaculture research and extension goals, along with the distribution of fiscal resources, to ensure strong programs in research and extension.

“I am very honored to be able to serve and advise the needs of landgrant universities as well as the farmers and ranchers throughout the state of Mississippi and the southern region,” he said.

In addition to his aforementioned roles, Buckner also serves as chair of the National Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) 4-H Leadership Committee. In this role he provides guidance on issues impacting cooperative extension.

I AM A

“I am a farmer,” is the first phrase that anyone who meets Cindy Ayers-Elliot will more than likely hear.

A

graduate of Jackson State University, Ayers-Elliott is the CEO of Foot Print Farms, LLC. Her farm operation, located in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi, is 68 acres, consisting of specialty crops, vegetables and livestock.

“I do nothing traditional,” said Ayers-Elliott, describing the innovative specialty crops she grows as well as the advanced farming techniques that she uses, like hydroponics. “It’s not my grandmother’s farm[ing] techniques anymore,” Ayers-Elliott continues. “We look at using technology, innovation, and what’s available to allow us to grow, supply, and make money.”

yers-Elliot grows an array of fruits and vegetables while also raising meat goats, chickens, cattle, and horses. It is her belief that planting seeds in the earth will grow fresh vegetables, and planting a seed in the minds of young people will create a new world of scholars.

After working five years as the CEO for Delta Foundation, an organization that specializes in economic development in the Mississippi Delta, Ayers-Elliot traded in her high heels for a pair of boots and her signature cowboy hat. She participates with the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA/NRCS), to ensure that her farm is productive and environmentally friendly.

While she depends on her farm for sustenance, she also uses it as an educational tool to introduce people to innovative ways of farming.

“We look at diversity within the farm itself, [trying to determine] what we can use and do to grow and add value to what we’re doing and how we can get more people interested in being able to grow their own food and do it efficiently,” says Ayers-Elliott.

In an effort to help others grow, Ayers-Elliott has developed a program where small producers can rent a plot of land at a nominal fee. This symbiotic relationship works to the benefit of her operation while also giving these producers land and access to resources to ensure that their crops yield a bountiful harvest.

“The goal of this is to create entrepreneurs as well as agriculture producers,” she said. “We’ll teach them every aspect of the growing, as well as the marketing.”

Living her life to be a catalyst for change, Ayers-Elliot was honored with the Women Entrepreneurs’ Award from Jackson State University’s College of Business’. In 2014, she was elected chairman of the Hinds County Soil and Water Conservation District and has also been awarded the Outstanding Minority Business of Central Mississippi from the Mississippi Minority Business Alliance, Inc. Ayers-Elliott is the recipient of the Mississippi Business Journal’s Top 50 Businesswomen in Mississippi, listed in Who’s Who among Black Americans, and established the second Freedom School Summer Program in Washington County, Mississippi. Her professional affiliations include: the Mississippi Fruit and Vegetables Growers

Association, National Alliance for Improvement in Higher Education, Mississippi Meat Goat Producers Cooperative, National Women in Agriculture, Mississippi Women in Agriculture, Women for Progress, George Washington Carver Future Scientist of America 4-H Club, Hinds County Board of Commissioners, and the Soil and Water Conservation District. She was also featured as a guest on The Katie Couric Show, “Spot Light Farming and Football”.

“You have to look at this as a business,” says Ayers-Elliot. “This is my future.”

Ayers-Elliott is the proud mother of LaGrand and Eric Elliott, and grandmother of Christian, Erica, and Zoe Elliott.

Alumnus Marcus Griffin inspires others to unlock their full potential as District Conservationist, USDA-NRCS

M

arcus Griffin, an alumnus of the Alcorn State University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, serves as district conservationist for the Fort Valley, Georgia Field Office of the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Griffin earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics in 2013. He was introduced to opportunities with the USDA as a freshman, when Clifton Peters, former USDA Liaison for the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, spoke to him about internship opportunities.

“At Alcorn I was active in student organizations such as MANNRS, Future Farmers of America, ABEC and so forth.

I also participated in roundtable discussions, networking mixers and with different departments and community activities. Mr. Peters would always tell us to keep an eye on the bulletin boards for internships and job postings. In 2010, I saw the one for USDA and applied.”

Just a few years later, Griffin now leads conservation efforts in four Georgia counties: Peach, Bibb, Taylor and Crawford.

Griffin cites untiring support from his parents and mentors as the keys to his success. He believes that his purpose as district conservationist is to serve the limited-resource farmers and ranchers of his state, while grooming students who are interested in careers in agriculture.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to now be in a position to help others advance in their profession. Academically I had great professors at Alcorn like Dr. Wesley Whittaker, who were passionate about teaching. They evaluated my individual learning style and adapted to my needs. Most had an open-door policy. I often remind myself that I didn’t do it alone. Someone made an impact in my life for me to be successful, so now, it’s my responsibility to help others get to their next level. Mentoring is a cycle. We all have to do our part to help educate, uplift and improve our communities.”

Originally from Gloster, Mississippi, through USDANRCS Griffin has had the opportunity to live and work throughout Kansas and Oklahoma. Now, he calls Georgia

home and is thrilled about the similarities and southern hospitalities that remind him of his Mississippi roots. He uses his pre-Alcorn days in rural Gloster as motivation and a reminder of the importance of the work he does.

“Growing up in a poverty-stricken community has motivated me to strive for success while helping others along the way,” said Griffin. One of his favorite quotes comes from Nelson Mandela and states, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived, it is what difference we have made to the lives of others. That will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

“This motivates me to make sure that I continue to educate our communities and provide assistance to underserved individuals. I look forward to recruiting students from colleges such as Alcorn, and assisting them with their transition to the USDA.” Griffin is a strong advocate of steering high school students toward careers in agriculture and applied sciences. He names the University as a great place for them to “educate and prepare themselves so that they can be of value to their community.” He wants students to know that a career in agriculture is an opportunity to invest in themselves and in others.

Griffin returns to his beloved alma mater each year for Homecoming and keeps in touch with favorite professors and staff. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

Personnel and state legislators collaborate at legislative awards luncheon

he School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences at Alcorn State University held its annual legislative awards luncheon on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 at the Old Capitol Inn in Jackson, MS to honor and recognize state legislators, staff and representatives for their efforts and support.

Presiding over the affair was Marcus Ward, vice president for Institutional Advancement and executive director for the ASU Foundation. “Our legislators play a uniquely important role in making decisions for the state of Mississippi and Alcorn State University,” said Ward, as he expressed gratitude to members of the legislature. He recognized their “investment in the knowledge and character of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.”

The invocation was given by Reverend C. Edwards Rhodes, II, director of Student Religious Life.

Former Interim President Dr. Donzell Lee welcomed the opportunity to greet and express gratitude to officials who have served and contributed to the University. “The support that you give us helps to keep tuition down,” said Lee. “We know that you work hard and we appreciate the hard choices that you make on behalf of Alcorn State University. Continue to make a difference in this great state.”

After dinner, the program continued with special presentations from Lee, Ward, and Dr. Edmund R. Buckner, dean and director of Land-Grant Programs, School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. Designated representatives received engraved plaques for their efforts and tireless support of the University.

The Braves Spirit Award is presented each year to an individual who has exemplified the Alcorn State University spirit through their professional and personal commitment.

The Braves Pioneer Award was presented to Mike McCormick, president of the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation, for exemplifying the Alcorn spirit through his and his organization’s professional commitment, support and assistance.

McCormick was elected as the 10th president of the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation and began serving his term in 2015. MFBF serves as the largest and strongest general farm organization in Mississippi, with more than 192,000 members in 82 counties. The organization seeks solutions to problems affecting the lives of farmers and their

families, both socially and economically.

Since its institution in 1922, the purpose of MFBF has been to provide a voice for Mississippi agriculture in the legislative arena, promote farm markets, and serve as a leader in the state’s agricultural community.

“Being from southwest Mississippi I understand how important the university is to our economy as well as to the future of the agriculture industry.

he Alcorn State University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences collaborated with the Mississippi State University Oktibbeha County Extension Office to host a Shiitake Mushroom Workshop in Starkville, Mississippi. The purpose was to educate participants on methods to grow shiitake mushrooms on hardwood logs.

This hands-on training was conducted by Dr. Frank Mrema, assistant professor of forestry, Alcorn State University, and Dr. Thomas Legiandenyi, extension agent, Mississippi State University Oktibbeha County Extension Office.

Shiitake mushrooms are extensively promoted worldwide as a nutritional supplement due to their medicinal properties, which encourage body immunity. They provide a good source of vitamins B and D and have the power to fight cancer cells, cardiovascular disease and infections.

They also help to control blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation within the body, among other health benefits.

Columbus McReynolds, a small farmer from Louisville, Mississippi, credits Mrema for introducing him to mushroom production. “Dr. Frank was the one that got me into growing mushrooms. I had 500 logs last year, now I’ve got 900 to 1000. Growing and selling mushrooms is a lot of work, but if you have the patience, time, and some good help, you can do pretty well in it,” he said.

McReynolds says he has sold mushrooms in Starkville and Jackson, and is currently looking at other markets.

According to Mrema, the goal was to recruit and train small-scale farmers and woodland owners to sustainably utilize their forest products (such as small logs and timber) for medicinal mushroom farming.

he Alcorn State University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences hosted its 4th annual Alumni Hall of Fame Banquet on Saturday, Aug. 17, to honor eleven alumni whose accomplishments embody outstanding achievement in the field of agriculture, family and consumer sciences, industrial technology, or a related community affiliation. The event was held at the Jackson Marriot in Jackson, MS, with more than 300 guests and community leaders in attendance.

The occasion began with a soft musical prelude to set the tone for the evening. Audience members received a warm welcome by Palmer, followed by greetings from various dignitaries.

Dr. Felicia Nave, president, Alcorn State University, provided attendees with salutations on behalf of the university. “Tonight we honor the very best of our alumni. Your life’s example serves to inspire students, faculty, staff and fellow alumni for generations to come,” she said.

After dinner, each honoree was presented an award

by Dorothy Kerney-Wilbourn and James W. Hill, Sr. A video presentation accompanied each honoree as they were recognized, spotlighting photography from throughout their life, work and careers.

Reverend Neddie Winters, president, ASU National Alumni Association, provided honorees with an official induction into the Hall of Fame. He challenged them to continue to be agents of change in their communities as well as to use their voices 34 | Fall 2019

to promote and move historically black colleges and universities forward.

As the night concluded, Dr. Edmund R. Buckner, dean and director of Land-Grant Programs, gave closing remarks and encouraged all in attendance to continue to support and advocate for Alcorn State University and the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.

he Alcorn State University Extension Program, in conjunction with the Mississippi Association of Cooperatives’ Center for Cooperative Development, hosted its 28th annual Small Farmers Conference on Monday, April 1 through Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at the Tunica Arena and Exposition Center, Tunica, Mississippi.

The conference exposed interested participants to sustainability models, new and innovative farming strategies, issues affecting small farmers, financial resources, marketing concerns, opportunities for women in business, and more. This year’s event welcomed nearly 325 participants and was centered around the theme, “Innovating Change: Securing Sustainable Agriculture for the Future.”

According to Dr. Franklin Chukwuma, associate director for Extension, School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, “The key of the Small Farmers Conference is for farmers and other participants to network and learn about ways to sustain their enterprises.”

The event began with a pre-conference featuring a panel of farmers and representatives from the United States Department of Agriculture. Rockiell Woods, gulf states regional director, National Center for Appropriate Technology, presided.

Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and connect with delegates from an array of organizations, including the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, USDA Farm Service Agency and others. Representatives shared strategies for sustainability in production, manufacturing, conservation, and finances.

After lunch, the conference officially commenced with greetings from University, state and local officials.

Mr. Archie Tucker, director of the Southeast Area, United States Department of Agriculture, served as the keynote speaker. During his dialogue he

encouraged attendees to discover ways to impact their communities.

During the span of the conference, participants were exposed to new advancements in the agricultural industry as well as novel approaches to improve their enterprises. Sessions examined areas such as heir property and estate planning, land and property rights, cooperative development, regional marketing, expanding small production for value-added foods, among others.

On the second day of the conference, participants boarded charter buses to travel to various learning sites in Marks, Mississippi, Memphis, Tennessee and other contiguous locations.

Featured sessions included: tours of the Alcorn State University Vegetable Processing Center, AgriCenter International, LandMark Farms and Food pantry, as well as some local small-farm operations. Participants discovered techniques for livestock fencing, row-crop production, growing and harvesting methods, valueadded production and much more. Farm Planning, Risk Management, Conservation, and Women in Business sessions were hosted on-site.

Later that evening, attendees put on their best cowboy hats and boots for the highly anticipated Farmer of the Year Dinner. Primus (Earlene) Wheeler of Jubilee Farms in Jackson, Mississippi was chosen as this year’s honoree.

During his acceptance speech, he and his wife thanked the University, the Extension Program, the Mississippi Association of Cooperatives, the USDA and other government agencies, conference sponsors, and their supporters for their assistance. They encouraged members of the audience to “act, think, and farm like an Alcornite.”

Attendees look forward to applying what they’ve learned in their respective operations. Many expressed a desire to attend the 2020 conference, slated to be held in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

On the final day of the conference, individuals enjoyed concurrent sessions regarding current issues faced by small farmers. Ford, CEO of Square O Consulting, LLC; Dr. Martha Alexander, CEO of Leadership Next-Generation Plus; Marlin Foster, executive director of Knowledge Quest; Freddie Davis, forester, River City Land Services; and Delmar Stamps, outreach consultant, Square O Consulting, LLC.

Participants expressed the rewarding benefits of attending.

Product Development Center offers resources to university community

T

he Alcorn State University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences is proud to announce the introduction of a new facility on the Lorman campus. The Product Development Center, a state of the art laboratory incubator facility, will be used to develop, enhance and promote the products of local farmers and entrepreneurs in surrounding communities (as well as those created by the University).

According to Dr. Edmund R. Buckner, dean and director of Land-Grant Programs, the Center is aimed at serving the local community, specifically limited-resourced and socially disadvantaged farmers, ranchers, and entrepreneurs throughout the state of Mississippi. “My hope is that we will serve the community in such a way that will improve the lives of agriculture producers and help them to increase their profits and advance their economic stability,� he said.

According to Anthony Reed, director of special projects, the Center is a three-tiered endeavor. It aims to: develop products through research; work with small farmers and entrepreneurs to help them find avenues to increase their profits; and educate students through hands-on experiences with value-added processing.

With jointly-marketed products ranging from hot sauce, pepper sauce, jellies, jams and marinades to items like lip balm, hand creams, and soap, the Center is poised to create a diverse impact on entrepreneurship in the surrounding region.

In the future, as the Center gains visibility and attention, the School plans to open an internet retail site that will accommodate Alcornites all over the world. “We want our alumni to be able to have access to all of our products,” said Reed.

Funded by the state of Mississippi as well as the United States Department of Agriculture, the Center plans to collaborate with other entities such as Canemount Plantation, The Chamber, and the Old Country Store to develop and sell products. However, Reed emphasizes that the Center’s first line of service is to aspiring, limited-resource entrepreneurs.

The Center held its soft-opening on April 14, 2018.

Faculty and staff, students, alumni, members of the local community and friends of the University were invited to visit the center during its summer hours of 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.

“We want the Product Development Center to be known for value-added products made from small farmers across the state of Mississippi. This is our way of helping small farmers to elevate themselves, as well as educating our youth,” said Reed.

a celebration of global cultures

T

he Office of Global Programs hosted its 2019 Multicultural Festival on Thursday, April 11 in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom from 1 – 4 p.m. The purpose of the festival was to celebrate multiculturalism and diversity at Alcorn State University. The theme for this year’s assembly was “A Celebration of Global Cultures.”

The event began with an international flag parade led by the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite drumline from the Office of Global Programs to the ballroom.

A myriad of students, faculty, staff, and guests were in attendance.

LLJuna Weir, director of Educational Equity and Inclusion, served as the mistress of ceremony.

During the celebration, Dr. Donna Williams, former interim vice provost and dean of the School of Business, presented a proclamation on behalf of Alcorn State University, declaring April 11, 2019 as Multicultural Day and acknowledging its importance to the university and its surrounding communities.

According to Dr. Dovi Alipoe, director of Global Programs, the university has identified a total of 21 countries represented among its undergraduate and graduate students this year, deriving from each populated continent.

Alipoe explained why the Multicultural Festival is critical to upholding a multicultural society.

“It is very important for us to try to understand other cultures,” he said. “The Multicultural Festival allows us to get a glimpse of the many different cultures that we have on campus. It is a learning venue for domestic students, international students as well as the communities adjacent to the University.”

The festival featured a performance by Galen Abdur-Razzaq, jazz flautist, of Flute Juice Productions, a musical entertainment company based out of Orlando, Florida. The company is known for providing music, entertainment and lectures to colleges and universities worldwide.

Entertainment was also provided by the ASU Jazz Band. Students performed monologues and skits under the direction of Dr. Johnny Allen, instructor, Department of Fine Arts. There was also an international fashion show, African dances, spoken word, and musical performances by international students.

Following the performances, guests got a chance to visit the multipurpose room and delight in cultural foods, international art and music displays, as well as interactive events highlighting the diversity at Alcorn State University.

Annual Fall vegetables Field Day T

he Alcorn State University Extension Program hosted its annual Fall Vegetables Field Day Thursday, Sept. 27 at John F. Kennedy Memorial High School in Mound Bayou, Mississippi. Registration began at 8 a.m. and the program kicked off at 9 a.m., lasting until 2 p.m.

The purpose of this event was to provide small farmers, gardeners and local community members with the opportunity to meet and network with other farmers and to connect with businesses, agencies and organizations who provide support and technical assistance to those in need. Co-sponsored by the USDA, organizations in attendance included the American Red Cross, AARP, United Healthcare and Mississippi Delta Council for Farmworkers, among others, who provided a host of valuable information. The field day also served as an opportunity for potential and beginning farmers to gain insight on how the farming industry works.

“Eating fresh fruit and vegetables on a daily basis is an excellent start on the path to making healthier lifestyle changes,” said Doris Miller, field day coordinator. As they focused on the theme “Small Farms Keep Agriculture Moving Forward,” coordinators encouraged individuals to strive to enhance their quality of life by living a healthier lifestyle. The event featured a drone and soil production demonstration, fresh produce sale, and a sweet potato bake-off contest, a crowd favorite.

This event has attracted more than 200 participants in the past. Miller remains hopeful for even greater turnouts in the future. “We plan to increase future participation by extending the invitation to surrounding school districts throughout the Mississippi Delta,” she said.

USDA Provides Grant to EDUCATE Underserved Farmers T

he Alcorn State University Extension Program (ASUEP) received a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture/ Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA/NRCS), totaling $750,000.00 to assist producers and landowners in understanding the importance of decision-making and risk reduction tactics as associated with agricultural production.

ASUEP collaborated with Tennessee State University and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s Extension programs to help underserved farmers manage their daily farm operations. Dr. Franklin Chukwuma, associate director for ASUEP, Dr. Henry English, Extension specialist for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and Finis Stribling, Extension specialist for Tennessee State University, were the project’s principal investigators. Alcorn State University served as the lead institution.

The goal of this project was to establish a case management model in which HBCU’s, USDA agencies and underserved farmers work together to improve farming operations for limited-resource farmers.

The project focused on teaching concepts, providing information, and facilitating the hands-on experience needed to build solid, feasible, and successful agricultural enterprises. It aimed to improve the sustainability of farming operations through the utilization of appropriate USDA programs and resources.

The objectives of the study were: to establish demonstration farms; to develop a coordinated Outreach and Educational Program to inform program participants about USDA programs and services; to help new and beginning producers obtain the education needed to enhance their potential by conducting a new and beginning producers academy; and to provide a risk management training program.

The trial for this project began in January 2018 and concluded in December of 2019. With high anticipations, Chukwuma hopes to extend this project to other 1890 institutions in the future.

The Impact of Heirs’ Property on Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers O

ne of the most persistent issues facing socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers (SDFRs) is heirs’ property, that is, land whose ownership has transitioned due to relatives dying without a will. SDFRs who farm on heirs’ property face legal and financial risks, cannot make decisions without the consent of all heirs, and do not qualify for federal financial assistance programs and grants. Anthony Reed, director of Special Projects for the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, served as the principal investigator for a project, which began Nov. 1, 2018 and ended Sept. 30, 2019. The study sought to uncover the number of minority farmers who actively farm on heirs’ property, and to survey its effects on farming success. This project was funded by the Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research Center.

Many times, SDFRs have established farms on heirs’ property, but are stalemated because they do not have a clear title to the property. Without a clear title, these farmers are not eligible for federal assistance programs, which could greatly enhance their farming success.

Additionally, any profits earned from farm sales must be divided among all heirs, regardless of their contribution to farming activities.

According to Barnes, follow-up procedures will include conducting heirs’ property workshops with sessions on gaining clear property titles, writing wills to eliminate future heirs’ property incidences, and more.

“The funding for this project set a foundation for gathering research-based information on the subject of heir’s property,” said Reed. “We hope to have a better understanding of what current and future policies can be written to help minimize the number of families dealing with these issues.”

Future research goals include conducting inquiries into other issues troubling SDFRs such as the inaccessibility to minority outreach programs, financial risk management, and distrust for the federal government.

For this project, mixed-methods procedures will be used to collect data through surveys, research and key informant interviews. To this regard, Dr. Thelma Barnes, former program evaluation specialist for the Alcorn State University Extension Program, prepared data collection instruments, analyzed data, and organized the research reports. Findings will help to develop policies that directly affect SDFRs. A final research report will be prepared and submitted to the Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research Center.

ALCORN MSFAC receiveS funding to educate New and Beginning Farmers

T

he Mississippi Small Farm and Agribusiness Center (MSFAC) received a grant of $600,000 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to assist in enhancing the sustainability of new and beginning farmers. Dr. Elizabeth Myles, adjunct faculty and associate director for the Mississippi Small Farm and Agribusiness Center, served as the project director. Dr. Gregory Reed, Dr. Magid Dagher, and Velma Oliver served as co-project directors.

Many opportunities exist within farming and ranching, but beginning farmers and ranchers (BFRs) have unique educational, training, technical assistance, and outreach needs. To ensure profitability and sustainability, it is vital for individuals who are just entering agriculture and/or are in their first 10 years of operation to have access to funds, land, knowledge and information.

According to data obtained from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, the number of young people going into farming continues to decline, but the number of new farmers and ranchers over the age of 35 as well as the number of smaller farms and ranches continue to rise.

According to Myles, delivering training to a new generation of BFRs – regardless of age or production choice – is important to the preservation of agricultural production.

The goal of the Farm Management Educational Program (FMEP) is to recruit, train and provide 300 new BFRs with the tools and resources necessary to produce and implement a practical farm plan, making them sustainable in vegetable and meat goat production. The objectives are to provide educational training and hands-on demonstration in basic crop and livestock production; financial management; risk management; market diversification; food safety and biosecurity (measures taken to protect humans or animals against disease or harmful

genetic agents); as well as programs and services of the current farm bill.

Outcomes for the program are expected to demonstrate: improved production practices and marketing strategies; gained knowledge in farm fundamentals; gained knowledge and experience in organizing financial records and creating enterprise budgets; established farm records to generate financial statements; utilized resources to develop a farm plan that incorporates realistic goals and objectives, establishes production, cultivates marketing and financial plans, and develops strategies for risk mitigation, etc.

“This funding is a step in the right direction to continue to recruit new, beginning farmers and ranchers. We will continue to provide cutting-edge assistance and outreach to Mississippi farmers to ensure that they remain sustainable,” said Myles.

Alcorn scientists receive grants to conduct research Panicker’s melon research impacts obesity statistics

D

r. Girish K.S. Panicker, associate professor and director of the Center for Conservation Research, along with other co-principal investigators, received a grant from the USDA/NIFA in the amount of $499,876 for evaluating 192 varieties of watermelons for important yield traits and fruit quality traits. After studies on the genetic make of these varieties of watermelons are conducted, they will be crossbred for new varieties. The best watermelons, based on qualities of yield, size, color, sugar content, etc., will be selected for conservation research.

In 2013, Panicker also received a grant from the USDA/NIFA in the amount of $498,561.00 for researching 103 varieties of musk melons and cantaloupes from around the globe for fruit yield and adaptability.

This research, along with others, has contributed to a decline in the state of Mississippi’s obesity rate.

Because of the grants received, Panicker has been able to distribute organic seeds, free of cost, to more than 1,500 farmers in the state of Mississippi. Consequently, these farmers collect the seeds from their melons to share with their neighbors and friends.

Their aim is to bring more awareness to the importance of sustainability.

According to Jones, this funding will enhance teaching and research capacities by seeding new research projects and incentivizing the incorporation of sustainability-themed topics in courses.

Yan Meng, assistant professor in the Department of Agriculture, along with other co-principal investigators, received a USDA/NIFA grant in the amount of $298,915 for their work in exploring a new biotechnological method to develop transgenic sweetpotato plants with resistance to two of the most prevalent sweetpotato viruses that cause diseases and reduce yields in the United States.

According to Meng, because of the high price for fresh markets, sweetpotatoes have great potential for small farm profitability. “Successful execution of this project will significantly boost the quality of life and environment in underserved communities,” she said. “I am very glad to have received this funding from the USDA/NIFA to conduct this meaningful research.”

The Distribution and Impact of Feral Swine in Macon County, AL and Claiborne County, MS

F

eral swine (Sus scrofa), which includes feral domestic pigs, Eurasian wild boars, and hybrids, are one of the world’s most widely distributed mammals and successful invasive species. Feral swine are linked to costly agricultural damage and present a serious threat to both plant and animal communities due to their rooting behavior and omnivorous diet. More importantly, they are known carriers of at least 45 different parasites and diseases that pose a threat to livestock, pets, wildlife, and human health. The primary objective of this study was to assess the distribution and impact of feral swine by comparing the damages and diseases prevalent in the respective areas and possibly across state lines.

It was hypothesized that feral swine distribution and impact, specifically when it comes to diseases, would be similar between counties. Blood serum and meat samples were collected from hogs captured and euthanized via corral traps. The isolated serum samples were intended to be assessed by the United States Department of

Agriculture to provide a comprehensive panel indicating disease prevalence, however, this was prevented by unforseen circumstances. Carcass samples were assessed for bacterial disease presence through bacterial smears and the microbiological assessments such as gram staining, MicroScan, and Biolog. The results showed the presence of gram-positive cocci and bacilli, which were confirmed to be Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus malodoratus, Lysinbacillus sphaericus, E. coli, and Enterococcus faecium.

These diseases are significant as studies have shown that they can be found to affect both feral swine and humans.

It can be concluded that the raw meat of feral swine needs to be properly cooked in order to minimize the risk of contracting these types of diseases.

Alcorn Collaborates with U.S. Army to Release Advanced Composting Technology

T

he Soil and Water Conservation Society of America (SWCS) held its 73rd International Annual Conference July 29 – Aug. 1, 2018 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The theme for this year’s seminar was “Culture, Climate, and Conservation.” Dr. Girish K.S. Panicker, director of Conservation Research within the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, delivered a lecture on “Slow-Release and Environmentally Friendly Compost Production with Magnesium and Poultry Waste for Improving Soil Health and Sustainable Crop Production.” The research for this lecture was conducted on the basis of the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between Alcorn State University and the U.S. Army. This advanced composting technology was developed under farm atmospheric conditions by Panicker in collaboration with Dr. Charles A. Weiss, research geologist, Dr. David B. Ringelberg, microbiologist, and Dr. Philip G. Malone, research geologist, all from the U.S. Army.

Composting is the process of breaking down or decomposing organic matter. The U.S. Army has made recent advances in the development of new composting procedures (U.S. Patents 6,206,945 and 6,776,816).

In his lecture, Panicker discussed how groundwater pollution and climate change are some of the biggest issues in the world. The new technology promotes the bacterial production of low-solubility ammonium magnesium phosphate (also known as Struvite) in an alternative organic composting process.

Struvite is produced by mixing animal manure with a pre-specified amount of a magnesium-rich compound.

This technique reduces the ammonia air pollution problem and will also prevent groundwater pollution.

According to Panicker, one of the most serious sources of non-point pollution is animal waste. This compost is a new type of organic fertilizer that will be a storable, marketable, enhanced high-nitrogen and high-phosphorus product that any animal farm can economically produce and sell.

“This is one of the greatest achievements in my professional life,” said Panicker in response to this research being accepted for publication in the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation Society. It is his belief that the impact of this work will be significant.

Jones family donates $30,000 to School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences and School of Business

F

ive brothers, all alumni, are making their mark and securing a legacy of giving in honor of their parents Geneva and James Ira Jones of Laurel, MS. The brothers— Wiley F. Jones, ’64, Roger D. Jones, ‘68, Rev. Clifford E. Jones, ‘69, John H. Jones, ’71 and Daniel L. Jones, ‘73— have donated a total of $30,000 to the university; $24,000 to the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences and $6,000 to the School of Business. The purpose of the gift is to provide financial assistance to qualifying students enrolled in the two Schools.

Being raised on a farm, the Joneses learned at an early age the true value of agriculture, hard work and receiving an education. Aside from Wiley, who majored in business administration, each of the Jones brothers received their undergraduate degrees in agricultural education from Alcorn.

“When our father passed away at an early age, our mother did everything that she could to get us to college. She taught us the importance of getting an education. As a result, we each became pretty successful in our areas of work. Because of the core values that she instilled in us, we just felt like we owed it back to the university,” said Daniel Jones.

To be eligible for the Geneva and James Ira Jones Endowment Fund scholarship, students must demonstrate a desire to succeed in their studies, show admirable leadership qualities, exhibit great moral character and have a minimum GPA of 2.50.

“We want to give other young people the same opportunities that we had,” said Jones. Although the brothers have exceeded their initial pledge of $30,000, they plan to continue to contribute to the university and donate over $100,000 for deserving students.

“We are so grateful for this generous gift. Department of Advanced Technologies hosts Training Program T

he Radiological Control Technician (RCT) training program is designed to prepare individuals who are seeking certification and would like to work for facilities where radioactive materials are used, such as commercial nuclear plants, laboratories, and the Department of Energy (DOE). The program was initiated by the Department of Advanced Technologies and Los Alamos National Laboratory, with support from the DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration.

According to Dr. Jermiah Billa, interim chair, Department of Advanced Technologies, there is a vast demand for technicians in the radiation/nuclear industry. “The training program will help individuals to receive certification at the technician level,” he said.

In order to be accepted into the program, students must possess a high school diploma or GED with class experience in Physics (Physics I, II), Chemistry (Chemistry I, II), and Mathematics (Algebra). Students may be evaluated differently if they have experience in the areas of safety or radiation protection.

“It is rewarding for me to be able to help students achieve their goals and receive a DOE certification in radiological training,” said Manuel Bonds, instructor and certified radiological control technician. “Not only am

I giving back to the University, but I’m also investing in the lives of these individuals,” he said.

During the program’s first year, students were invited to join. Currently, students must apply in order to be considered. Applications are evaluated by Alcorn faculty, LANL scientists, and support staff from the Grand Gulf Nuclear Plant.

How Need Based Programs Improve the Student Experience

I

n my few years of experience in higher education, I have learned a great deal about pedagogy, andragogy, curricula, programs and more. Yet, the fact remains that I have much more to learn about what anchors students to academic programs and what enhances their academic success. I ponder over this question: Is it the teaching strategies, or something else?

Teaching-learning strategies are dynamic and will continue to evolve. Some practices continue to remain and some tend to become obsolete, based on the outcomes that they yield. We hear of “best practices,” “evidence-based practices,” and “proven practices” in higher education so often, yet I continue to question why are there so many practices and how does one determine the best one.

Having worked in the field of rehabilitation prior to coming to Alcorn, I seem to have subconsciously gleaned from my past experiences, which have allowed me to impact the present. A practice we follow in rehabilitation is “need-based intervention,” which as the term implies, means designing interventions or programs that meet the needs of the client. Drawing from experiences of the past, I began to ponder on our strategies to improve students’ success in the Department of Human Sciences, using the need-based intervention paradigm.

I started to think on a more granular level of what would contribute to student success and how we, in the Department of Human Sciences, could create a rich environment for students to thrive and succeed. I started by making a laundry list of items for student success, which spanned out at length. I learned that some of the factors that affect student success include: lack of access to information and resources, familiarity (or lack thereof) with staff and faculty, a need for support for students who have a hard time coping with course work, psycho-social well-being, experience in co-curricular activities, etc. I chose a few of the commonly expressed or perceived needs of students and decided to see how best I could create novel, need-based and effective interventions. These are described in the following sections.

TOWN HALL MEETINGS Students often report the need for information or express the lack thereof as being a reason for not succeeding. As an opportunity to provide needed information for all students in the beginning of the semester, we launched the Town Hall Meeting, which serves as an opportunity to connect freshman students with their peers, introduce them to faculty and staff in the department, facilitate interaction with members from other units, share resources within and outside the department, and provide vital information for the semester. Consistent attendance at the past three Town Hall meetings is evidence that it has been favorable to students.

TUTORING SERVICES Similarly, some students have expressed difficulty in coping with course work during the stipulated class period.

For such students, we facilitated tutoring services within the department.

These services are free of charge and have flexible timings

to fit students’ schedules. They create a supportive learning environment which not only fulfills the need for academic support for students, but also serves as a means to provide them with basic learning resources such as computers and textbooks, as well as individualized attention. Tutoring services serve as a venue to facilitate study groups where students can support each other through collective learning. It creates peer leaders who serve as tutors, and has the potential to create a social environment where students can explore topics beyond the course work, discuss professional skills, and even jointly seek graduate school admissions and career opportunities.

CAREER AND COUNSEL SESSIONS Like the Tutoring Services and Town Hall meetings, Career and Counsel Sessions were initiated to better prepare students for graduate school or future careers. We invite professionals to share with students about opportunities in the field and to counsel them on how to prepare for the careers that they aspire to have. This includes some basic skills such as how to request a letter of recommendation, professional attire, communication and email etiquettes,

etc. This, we believe, has been an effective program, as we have seen students request additional information and become intentional in seeking specific careers.

RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS Employers seek individuals who are capable of thinking critically and have the ability to articulate their ideas.

Therefore, to equip students with these skills, we decided to give them the opportunity to engage in research. We fortified our course curriculum to include research-based assignments and encouraged student research presentations. We also promoted attendance at professional meetings, which gives students an opportunity to network with peers from other institutions and exposes them to opportunities and current advancements in the professional market.

Being able to present to a wide audience gives students a sense of accomplishment. We were able to mentor ten students for research presentations in the past year and four of them received student awards.

While the above initiatives were directly related to academic achievement, the following initiatives have an indirect influence on academic achievement, through a focus on student psycho-social wellbeing.

Although psycho-social wellbeing is not often seen as a factor affecting student academic performance, its indirect influences have significant ramifications. Common crises include family and financial difficulties, health problems leading to absenteeism, tardiness in course work and poor grades. While we are aware that we will not always be able to provide students with resources to address the psychosocial issues affecting them, we decided to provide them with resources to help them cope with such issues, such as the Wellness Wednesdays initiative.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAYS Wellness Wednesdays is an initiative of our professional organization, the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. Its aim is to expose our students to the initiatives of the professional body and to cater to their own overall well-being. We’ve tailored this effort to be student led, so that participants will seek self-wellness information and share findings with their peers through the creation of informational boards, surveys or learning through invited professionals as they present. With a focus on promoting overall wellbeing, in the past year we have initiated activities across the spectrum of physical, financial and mental health.

As the initiatives launched over the past year slowly yield great returns, we are excited about their potential to serve the needs of students in various measures. In the future, we hope to be able to assess the extent to which these initiatives are effective and identify ways by which we can modify or introduce new initiatives for greater student success. We envision that these endeavors will contribute to student success as evidenced through grades, career placements, graduation rates and graduate school pursuits.

In all of our efforts we strive to realize our mission, which is “to prepare students to be career and graduate school ready to address the 21st century concerns of individuals, families and communities pertaining to well-being, relationships and resources.” After all, we are in the business of “Enriching the Human Experience.”

Department of Agriculture Establishes 2+2 Agreement with Hinds Community College T

he Department of Agriculture recently signed a 2+2 agreement with Hinds Community College (HCC), Utica, Mississippi. This agreement will allow students to take junior and senior level courses at Alcorn after the completion of an Associate of Arts degree program at Hinds. Open to students majoring in all areas of agriculture, the program began implementation in fall 2018.

“We want to increase our presence on Hinds’ campus so that students will know that we are collaborating with them,” said Dr. Victor Njiti, chair, Department of Agriculture. According to Njiti, the department wants to eventually spread the program to other institutions, starting with Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

To assist students in mastering essential courses before transferring, Alcorn faculty members will help teach courses on Hinds’ campus. Two specific courses that will

be offered will be Principles of Genetics and Principles of Cell and Tissue Culture, taught by Dr. Yan Meng, associate professor, Department of Agriculture.

Under this program, the department wants to involve HCC students who are in the agriculture field in its research and outreach activities, various on-campus student organizations, and travel to off-campus conferences.

FORMER ALCORN STUDENT TO MODERNIZE ON-CAMPUS FACILITIES

B

orn and raised in Vicksburg, MS, Greg Durrell attended Alcorn State University in 1997 and studied Pre-Engineering. He later attended and graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Architecture in 2004. Durrell currently serves as president and principal architect for Durrell Design Group, PLLC located in Jackson, MS.

Throughout college, Durrell was active in various organizations. “I had a strong desire to experience diversity of thought,� he said. Today, Durrell is an active member of the Mississippi Board of Architecture, National Council of Architectural Registration Board, American Institute of Architects and the Construction Specifications Institute.

Before starting his own firm, Durrell worked as an intern architect for a small firm in Tupelo, MS for three years. He later moved to a larger architecture firm in Jackson, MS, where he worked for six years.

Since opening his firm in 2012, Durrell has been a frontrunner in his industry. His group is currently working on several amenities on the main campus such as: the former football facility, weight room, concession stands, Morris-Boykins Agricultural Science building, Animal Science Center, and the AG Science Amphitheater.

During his lifetime, Durrell has achieved many personal accolades such as: becoming the first African American to serve on the Mississippi Board of Architecture (MSBOA), being recognized as Top 40 under 40 in the Mississippi Business Journal, and receiving the Mississippi Top CEO,

Entrepreneur of the Year, and Alumni of 10,000 Small Business Program Awards.

Durrell references some his biggest career achievements as being appointed to the MSBOA after only being licensed for three years, and establishing an industryleading, minority-owned architecture firm. His passion in life involves the pursuit of excellence. “I believe in excellence always, in all ways,” he stated.

In addition to his aforementioned projects, Durrell and his wife, Anita, have proven time after time to be generous in their giving by providing foundation scholarships to the School in the amount of $15,000.00 ($3000.00 per year for five years). The DDG Spirit of Excellence Scholarship was designed for deserving minority students, preferably from low-income and

single-parent families, that demonstrate financial need and possess high academic achievement in their collegiate career. The scholarship is limited to sophomores, juniors and seniors within the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.

“There have been numerous people who have imparted knowledge in me,” said Durrell, as he credits those who have had an impact on his success. “I am an Alcornite today, and forever.”

ASU Child Development Learning Center Celebrates Six Graduates at Transition Ceremony

T

he Department of Human Sciences’ Child Development Learning Center (CDLC) celebrated six graduates during its Preschool Transition Day Program on July 31, 2018 in the J.D. Boyd Library Auditorium. The theme for the ceremony was “Sailing Our Way Into Kindergarten.”

Parents, grandparents, teachers, and fellow preschoolers, as well as University faculty and staff, cheered as Dontrell Banks, Cameron King, Madelynn Richardson, Embree Smith, Samuel Smith and Adanna Ugboaja celebrated a major accomplishment—the transition from preschool to kindergarten.

The graduates were eager to share with attendees all that they’d learned over the course of their time at the CDLC. “Get ready, get set, because here I go; I’m ready to show you all I know!” they proudly exclaimed, as they recalled their colors and numbers in English and Spanish, as well as their opposites and sight words.

Arthur Owens, CDLC director, presented the excited graduates with preschool diplomas.

Jamea Adams-Ginyard, former assistant athletic director/senior women’s administrator, is the proud parent of graduate Embree Smith. She is grateful to the Center, its teachers and administrators for providing a great experience for her daughter.

“I can definitely see a difference in my daughter,” Ginyard said. “I have been a strong advocate for this development center and have seen how dedicated the staff has been over the past couple of years.”

Ginyard encourages parents to continue to be their child’s biggest supporters, in life as well as when they transition to kindergarten.

Dr. Margo Montgomery-Richardson, assistant professor of Chemistry, shared that she brought her daughter Madelynn to the Center when she was just six months old. “It was encouraging to know that my child was in loving hands. The Center is a family, my family. I want to publicly say thank you to everyone. We are truly going to miss you all.”

The ASU Child Development Learning Center is committed to providing a high-quality early childhood

environment that fosters optimal growth, development and early learning in young children. The program accepts children between the ages of six-weeks to five-years. With classrooms for infants, toddlers and pre-school aged children, the Center provides full-year, full-day child care services. 5th Annual Center for Research Excellence Symposium P

aying registration fees, uploading abstracts, designing posters, and preparing presentations were all a part of the process to make the 5th annual Center for Research Excellence Symposium (CRES) an immersive learning opportunity for students. Held in the Biotechnology building on February 7, the symposium offered opportunities for students to act as professionals and to showcase their expertise. Students, faculty and staff from Alcorn State University as well as exhibitors from throughout the state were invited to attend.

“About six years ago, Dr. Davida Crossley came to me with an idea to start something so that our students would be better prepared for presenting and communicating their research at regional, national and international conferences,” said Dr. Keith McGee, CRES chair and associate dean for Research and Administration. “It has steadily grown since its first year.”

During the awards ceremony, each participant received a certificate of appreciation. Those who placed were given plaque awards and monetary gifts. First place winners received $250 and second place winners received $150.

According to Dr. Melissa Mason, CRES co-chair and assistant professor, “Our goal was to make this symposium realistic and similar to how other conferences run. When our students attend conferences, we want them to present themselves well and be confident, and that comes through experience.”

The awardees for best undergraduate poster presentation were: Asia Thomas, who placed first for her work on the “Prevalence and Environmental Risk Factors for Obesity in Elementary School Aged Children;” and Kaelin Travis, who placed second for her work on “Bacillus Subtilis Assisted Bioprocess Modification of Sweet PotatoSoymeal under Solid State Fermentation (SSF).”

The occasion concluded with an ice cream social and awards ceremony held in the Ecology building. Attendees got a chance to get their fill of multiple ice cream flavors and toppings as well as to interact with other students, faculty, and guests.

Dr. McGee, along with Dr. Babu Patlolla, dean and professor of biology, School of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Edmund Buckner, dean and director of Land-Grant Programs, School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, gave closing remarks.

Students Undergo Experiential Learning in San Jose, Costa Rica S

tudents from the Department of Agriculture traveled to Costa Rica last summer to learn about tropical agroecology and sustainability. Funded by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, this project was designed to produce globally competent and competitive graduates and to allow students to gain international experience.

The five-week course allowed students to examine sustainable development and its basic concepts focused in the neotropics and Costa Rica, as well as agriculture and food systems from an environmental perspective. According to Victor Njiti, project director and Department of Agriculture chair, Costa Rica was chosen as a destination site due to its tropical agriculture and ecology/sustainability program.

During their tenure, students lived with host families. They were expected to attend class each morning, where they learned about consumption and production issues related to food systems’ sustainability, and explored the role that they play in the food system. Class credit was received from Veritas Universidad, the host institution, and transferred to Alcorn after successful completion of the course.

“Part of it is cultural, most of it is learning and interaction,” said Njiti. “Students are very involved from the time they reach Costa Rica until the time they leave.”

“It was a very eye-opening experience,” said Jessica Ransom, a junior environmental science major from Houston, Texas.

She recounts visiting a cocoa bean plantation where they learned how to make chocolate, hot chocolate and brownies as her favorite part of her experience.

David Dickson, a sophomore Pre-Veterinary Medicine major from Lake Providence, Louisiana, said he enjoyed learning about how everything is interconnected in order to sustain a farm. “My favorite experience was our weekend excursion to Tortuguero. While there we took a boat ride and got to see all of the animals that they had,” he said.

Combating Financial Illiteracy F

inancial illiteracy continues to be an economic and social concern—particularly among low-income and minority populations. The gap between consumer decisions and financial literacy has contributed to an influx of poor consumer behaviors, resulting in record-high levels of debt and record low-levels of financial security for communities throughout the nation.

Community Resource Development (CRD) educators in the Alcorn State University Extension Program identified that individuals in neighboring communities needed financial literacy education and resources to improve their financial futures for the purposes of home ownership, business development, career advancement and general fiscal health. Thus, CRD staff collaborated with several school districts, faith-based organizations, local radio stations, housing authorities, and other local community agencies to educate citizens on the financial management tools and habits necessary for reducing poverty and creating wealth.

Some of the ongoing activities include: • Collaborating with the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority and Develop & Empower Housing Group to offer financial management curriculum to limitedresource participants • Working with school districts in Pike and Wilkinson counties to offer financial management curriculum for high school students

• The development of programs such as “How to Start and Grow Your Business” and “Tailoring Your Business for Profit and Sustainability,” which offer business owners and potential entrepreneurs education and resources to improve their financial profiles and gain access to capital • Collaborating with WAKH Radio to offer a weekly segment entitled “Focus on Finance”

• Partnering with the Pearl River Valley Opportunities’ Head Start Program to offer financial management education to parents

Individuals from Pike, Adams, Amite, Jefferson and Walthall counties in Mississippi were able to benefit from the technical assistance and training sessions. 85 percent of the individuals who attended the business development sessions have reported a better financial profile and increased credit scores. Of 112 individuals, roughly 25 percent have reported an increase in their credit score and roughly 15 percent have reported establishing a savings account. Nearly all surveyed participants have reported an increase in financial management-related knowledge.

fsa loans 101: how to borrow smarter D

ue to a lack of financial resources, many small and limited-resource farmers and ranchers throughout the state of Mississippi face difficulties in their farming operations. When applying for a Farm Service Agency (FSA) loan, borrowers have issues understanding how to complete a loan application or are uncomfortable with its length and content. As a result, many submit incomplete or incorrect documentation.

The Alcorn State University Extension Program (ASUEP) in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture as well as other departments at Alcorn State University, offered courses that were designed to address these and other “realworld� problems to help small and limited-resource agricultural producers meet the requirements for Borrower’s Training, as outlined in FSA regulations. Consequently, borrowers were equipped to become more profitable and were better prepared to operate in a modern business environment.

Borrowers were introduced to contemporary tools and methods which assisted them in enhancing their farming practices and helped them to minimize farm risks.

Content for the courses included: goal setting; risk management; record keeping; budgets and decision-making; financial statements and efficiency measures, as well as production practices. Upon completion of the program, participants received a certificate which confirmed their new-found proficiency in the aforementioned areas.

Borrowers reported an increase in valuable skills as well as a better understanding of the loan application process. During the 2017-2018 term, the FSA issued over $4,564,000 in funding to 88 borrowers to increase their farm operations through the acquisition of equipment and land.

The Five C’s OF BORROWING I

t is important to know what banks and other financial institutions, such as the Mississippi Small Farm and Agribusiness Center (MSFAC), look for in qualified applicants who seek to borrow money for a farm. A set of characteristics known as “The Five C’s” are considered to keep both lender and borrower default rates low in the case of non-payment.

12 345 CHARACTER A credit report helps lenders to measure the borrower’s character by considering the number of overall debts, the percentage of debts paid on time, etc. This includes the borrower’s credit history, standing, and track record of repayment.

CAPACITY Does the borrower have the ability to repay a loan? The projected cash flow budget, which measures debt to income, helps lenders to measure the borrower’s capacity for repayment.

CAPITAL How much can the borrower personally invest into the farm operation? Cash on-hand, farm equipment, and any land resources that he or she may own will help to determine the overall capital investment.

COLLATERAL Does the borrower have personal assets involved in the farm operation? Deeds to land, farm equipment and machinery, and other hard assets that are free and clear of liens and encumbrances help lenders to determine the value of personal assets to secure the loan.

The interest rate, principal amount, and specific purpose for the loan are factors that help lenders to decide on a loan approval.

CONTINUITY Does the borrower have the ability to make sound management decisions about the farm operation? The final financial report assures lenders that the operation is sustainable beyond the life of the loan.

COMMUNICATION Borrowers should persistently keep in touch with their loan officer through telephone, email, and other means to discuss potential issues that may affect annual payments.

This reassures lenders of the borrower’s commitment to repayment.

CONTROL Control is defined as the borrower’s ability to use a farm records system.

Production and financial records reassure lenders that the farm operation’s portfolio is timely and organized.

Borrowers who consider these factors are in a positive position for a successful small farm loan financing process, thus amplifying their potential to maximize profits and improve their net worth.

here is an expression that says, “good things come in small packages.� However, the typical small farmer probably would not agree with this expression when it comes to borrowing money. Many small farmers believe that they need a lot of money in order to generate farm profits, but the truth is, a little can do a lot.

For more than 21 years, the Mississippi Small Farm and Agribusiness Center, an entity of the Alcorn State University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences,

has helped small farmers throughout the state to access financial capital through the Small Farm Loan Program. The program was established to provide capital to small farmers who could not obtain credit from traditional financial institutions.

This supervised credit and technical assistance program is structured to minimize farm risks and enhance enterprise success. Additionally, the loans have a zero-percent interest rate, eliminating additional costs for borrowing capital. Funds can be

used to purchase equipment, livestock, farm inputs, and for value-added enterprises.

farmers should have basic farming knowledge, access to land, realistic goals, and a well-thought-out plan.

To date, more than 300 small-scale and limitedresource farmers in Mississippi have received loans totaling $2.9 million. These funds have produced an economic impact of approximately $11.6 million for the state’s agricultural industries and local economies.

Inspiring Healthier Lifestyles, One Meal at a Time I

t is no secret that Mississippi is in the top 35% of states in the nation with the highest rate of obesity among adults. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture has funded a variety of programs, including the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) which help to address the obesity epidemic.

EFNEP in the Alcorn State University Extension Program was recently recognized as the first institution in Mississippi (and the second at an 1890 University) to have a shared agreement with Oldways African Heritage and Health, a program that develops healthy resources and initiatives to support the food-based traditions of African heritage.

Upon completion of the first installment of the course, participants reported an increase in their fruit and vegetable consumption by roughly one cup per day. Three of the 20 participants reported that they have started their own container gardens and are using the harvest to prepare meals.

The organization introduced “A Taste of African Heritage,� a curriculum that educates participants on how to eat and cook healthy, traditional, and enjoyable meals through hands-on experience. The free, six-week program modifies traditional recipes to make them healthier, with hopes that participants (many of them minorities) will consume more fresh fruit and vegetables.

The program also teaches participants to incorporate more physical fitness into their day. With lesson plans that teach history and nutrition, as well as cooking techniques, participants indulge in the rich cultural history of African heritage foods while learning to adapt recipes toward better health.

Preparing Youth for the Future T

he Alcorn State University Extension Program (ASUEP) recognizes that many rural and minority youth throughout the region are ill-prepared for professional life. Without the proper education, knowledge and skills, they are statistically likely to live in poverty. With this is mind, the “Preparing Youth for the Future Workforce Development Program,” was established in conjunction with Jefferson County High School and SkillsUSA of Jefferson County, Mississippi. The program is designed to educate participants while exploring the psychological, sociological, educational, and economic factors that influence career success and the development of an individual for the world of work.

Participants learn to complete job applications, write resumes, dress for success and develop successful communications skills in order to become competitive professionals. They also receive opportunities and are supported in their completion of award, scholarship, school and employment applications.

Utilizing the “Working-Class Curriculum,” the program consists of a week-long workforce development program for 150 Jefferson County junior and senior high school students enrolled in SkillsUSA, a national membership association that prepares students for further education and careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.

Of the 150 students that completed the program, 85% completed a workforce portfolio and 80% participated in and completed two mock interview sessions at the Jefferson County Career & Technology Center.

Communities benefit when youth are prepared to become productive citizens.

The skills acquired through this program allow students to enter college or the workforce prepared to work cooperatively, think critically and for themselves, solve problems, and pursue goals.
