Message from Alumni:

Happy summer! The season we have all been waiting for has finally arrived (probably not so much for Arizona). Summer is full of fun and exciting adventures and we are excited to hear more about everyone’s summer in the fall. We hope that everyone has a wonderful and safe summer!

Current Student Spotlight: Robby Choueiri

Robby Choueiri is a senior who will be graduating in 2016 with a degree in Economics. He recently won the Wilkinson Award at the 2015 Senior Banquet (Congrats!). As many LSPers, Robby is quite busy. He is the founder of Global Microfinance Brigades, a Junior Advisor and International Committee Chair to the Dean of the Business School, is involved with the McCord Scholars Program, and the Pat Tillman Scholars Program. He has not only excelled in academics and leadership, but has also interned at the U.S. Department of Trade & Commerce, President’s Office at ASU, and at the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. For the summer, he will be interning as an Analyst in Washington D.C. for the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Economic & Business Affairs, Office of International Finance & Development.

ASU Alumni Spring Leadership Conference – Erin Lin, 2009 Cohort At the end of March this year, I had the pleasure of flying to Arizona to attend the 2015 Spring Alumni Leadership Conference in Tempe. It was a 2-day conference that helped leaders of alumni chapters and clubs to be successful. It was jam packed with information regarding tailgates, budgets, membership, communication tips, and much more! We even had the chance to check out the Sun Devil Stadium and learn more about the changes that they are making. It was great to be back in Arizona and to be amongst peers who want to spread the ASU Alumni pride! I even got to connect with a fellow LSP alum, Hope Larsen!

Alumni Spotlight: Nevida Jack 1997 Cohort, Class of 2002 Nevida is a part of the 1997 LSP Cohort and graduated in 2002 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Her favorite memory of LSP was sitting around during campfire at retreat and sharing advice and stories. Navida says LSP has provided her with a network of leaders in various industries. Hearing success stories of other LSP Alumi reminds her that there are no limits and to keep impacting the lives of others.

Nevida is currently a manager within the Supply & Trading division at Salt River Project (SRP). SRP is one of the nation’s largest public power utilities and provides electricity to nearly 1 million retail customers within three Arizona counties, including the greater metropolitan Phoenix area. Supply & Trading (S&T) is SRP’s first line of defense for keeping the lights on. If a power plant outage occurs, S&T can buy energy from the market or start another plant to serve our retail customers. S&T also decides on a real-time, day-ahead, and forward basis, up to six years out, whether it is more economical to generate electricity from one of our power plants or buy energy from the market. When excess energy is available in SRP’s portfolio, S&T will sell to other companies. The Operations Planning department that Nevida manages within S&T provides the analytical tools for these decisions with the ultimate goal to minimize retail costs. Her team also provides IT support for the applications used on the trading floor and analysis involving future energy contracts and trading strategies. Her department, which includes economists, engineers, and analysts, also coordinates with the power plants to schedule maintenance outages during periods that are most cost-effective and do not inhibit system reliability. As the manager, her role is to create and execute a vision and develop her employees such that SRP and the retail customers benefit from cost-effective, reliable operations in ever-changing gas and electricity markets.

Nevida holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and a W. P. Carey MBA for Technology, Science, and Engineering, both from Arizona State University. She is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Arizona and holds a private pilot’s license. She serves as the National President of the youth department for her church organization, an annual team coordinator for the Walk Now for Autism Speaks, a math tutor, and a volunteer for Special Olympics. She enjoys providing individuals in need with housing solutions, traveling with her family, reading, and singing in her

church choir.

Aids/Life Cycle: a 545-mile journey - Neil Giuliano

There are approximately 1.1 million people living with HIV in the U.S. and almost one-fifth (18.1 %) don’t know they are infected. Since the beginning of the AIDS pandemic, 1.7 million Americans have acquired HIV; more than 650,000 have died of AIDS. Over 50,000 new HIV infections occur in the U.S. annually. Globally, more than 35 million people are now living with HIV; 3.2 million are under the age of 15. In 2013, an estimated 2.1 million people were newly infected with HIV. 240,000 were under the age of 15. Every day on the planet more than 5,700 people contract HIV—nearly 240 every hour.

The above sounds grim, but we’re winning the war against HIV/AIDS. Treatment can allow someone with HIV a normal life expectancy. Today, an HIV-positive person with their HIV virally suppressed is likely not infectious. And there is even a one-pill-a-day treatment that an HIV negative person can take to remain negative, should they come in contact with the virus.

As CEO of San Francisco AIDS Foundation, one of the largest and most impactful AIDS organizations in the world, I have the honor to work in this public health arena. It’s personal; many friends died. Many others live with HIV. I’m one of many gay men taking the one-pilla-day treatment to remain HIV negative. I do so for my own health, and because so many never had this kind of opportunity to prevent HIV. From May 31-June 6 I will be riding my bike 545-miles in AIDS/LifeCycle, the largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser on the planet. Over 2500 riders and 700 volunteers will raise nearly $16 million. The event is co-produced my SFAF and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. The funds support our free HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs.
