Master of Science in biostatistics

The MS in biostatistics is an innovative graduate program that equips you to execute research studies aimed at solving health care’s most pressing problems. This program will provide you with a research-focused foundation in designing clinical trials and intervention studies for data collection, data analysis and analysis outcome interpretation. You will learn how to use modern statistical methods, tools and software to interpret health data in order to make valid statistical inferences that improve health outcomes.

Gain knowledge and experience in a core curriculum focused on biostatistical theory and inference, biostatistical data analysis, computational biostatistics, applied regression models, categorical data analysis, multilevel and longitudinal data analysis, and clinical trial design and analysis. Develop your skills in a collaborative, hands-on format under the guidance of experienced faculty and mentors.

Graduates will be able to work effectively in multidisciplinary research and implementation teams to analyze health-related data and communicate solutions. The average full-time student will be able to complete this graduate program in as little as a year and a half. Expand your skill set as a biostatistician while gaining a competitive advantage for your career goals.

faster than average job growth expected for statisticians through 2033

The College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University translates scientific health research and discovery into practice. Its programs prepare students to address the challenges facing our populations to stay healthy, improve their health, and manage chronic disease — all toward improving health outcomes.

Master of Science in biostatistics curriculum

Prepare for an innovative career executing health-related studies, analyzing and interpreting health data to improve health outcomes. Specialize with an applied research focus where you learn how to design, implement, evaluate and apply research studies — all under the guidance of an experienced mentor.

Core courses

BST 601 Biostatistical Theory and Inference

Build a deep understanding of foundational concepts in biostatistical theory and inference such as random variables, common discrete and continuous distributions, independence and expectations.

BST 602 Applied Multi-level and Longitudinal Data Analysis

Learn how to analyze multilevel and longitudinal data in health-related studies using analytical tools with R and SAS software.

BST 604 Computational Biostatistics

Develop a broad, practical understanding of computational biostatistics by examining how and why existing methods work.

BST 605 Biostatistical Data Analysis

Examine classic and modern statistical methods, including linear models, generalized linear models, mixed-effects models, nonparametric methods and machine learning approaches.

BST 606 Applied Clinical Trial Design and Analysis

Discover basic concepts of clinical trials and how statistical methods are applied in clinical trial development.

BST 609 Categorical Data Analysis in Health Sciences

Learn how to analyze categorical outcome data using generalized linear models, including logistic regression model, Poisson regression and other techniques.

Electives

Explore topics like machine learning and deep learning, applied sampling methodology, population health management and analytics and embedded machine learning. Consult with your program advisor to select the elective courses that align most closely with your professional goals.

The culminating experience

You will get hands-on experience by applying your newfound skills and knowledge to a real health care challenge with an in-depth capstone project. Health services organizations, including hospitals, clinics, state legislative officials and nonprofits, partner with our college to give you the opportunity to gain the experience.

Over the course of the program, you will receive guidance from a faculty member and an on-site professional mentor. Online students may work on their capstone project at their places of employment. Students not yet employed in the health care sector will work with faculty to find a project that helps them accomplish their professional goals.

Your capstone project will not only change you intellectually but also help you develop the skills and valued connections that can lead to future employment or advancement in your chosen profession.
