Lord Panchmukhi Hanuman: Symbolism and Significance
There are many devotees of Hanuman around the world who worship this magnificent Hanuman in many forms. The five faces are staring in different directions, often leaving the audience perplexed. Panchmukhi Hanuman or Panchmukhi Anjaneya Swami is considered to be one of his Viraat (giant) forms. Some also trust that there are two forms of Shri Panchmukhi Hanuman. All five majestic faces of Hanuman are in one form while the other is more popular. Five majestic faces, each related to different deities:
Lord Hanuman: He is facing east with steadfast devotion. By devotion Hanuman one gets rid of one's sins and gets peace, purity, happiness, and fulfillment.
Lord Narasimha: One of the many epitome of Lord Vishnu, this lion form faces south. Lord Vishnu took this form to protect his devotee Prahlad. Fear goes away by worshiping Narasimha. Boldness and victory are blessings showered on the devotee.
Lord Garuda: Facing west, Garuda or the eagle is part of the five-faced Hanuman instance. He provides protection from negative influences, black magic, and evil spirits.
Lord Adivaraha: Varaha is another manifestation and is believed to ward off the evil effects of planetary movements. Facing north, Varaha bestows wealth and prosperity.
Lord Hayagriva: The form of the horse is upward, and bestows wisdom, progeny, and liberation.
Lord Panchmukhi Hanuman is splendid and awe-inspiring. This form originated in Patala when Hanuman, the son of Vayu, was entrusted with the responsibility of saving the life of Lord Rama. No wonder this form is endowed with many weapons like Parshu (battle axe), Chakra (disc), Gada (mace), Trishul (trident), and Khanda (sword).

A form of Panchmukhi Hanuman
During the Ramayana war, a defeated Ravana summoned one of his brothers, Ahiravana, the chief of Patala (the netherworld). Disguising himself as Vibhishana, Ahiravana takes away Hanuman and abducts Lord Rama and Lakshmana.
When Hanuman went to Patala, he learned the only way to kill Ahiravana. The spirit of this demon lives in five candles. The only way to destroy it was to blow out all five candles at the same time. Hanuman then revealed his five-faced form, each facing a different direction. Together, they blow out the candles and bring the still-unconscious Lord Rama and Lakshmana back to Lanka.
Thus the worshiper of the Panchmukhi Hanuman form gets freedom from various kinds of fear, negativity, and enemies.
Hanuman is often referred to as a yogi. He is believed to have attained perfection in his siddhis and gained control over his five senses (Pancha indriyas). This is one of the many apprehension of the number five. In other versions, the famous Tamil poet Kambar shares the significance of the number five in Ramavataram, the Tamil version of the Ramayana.
Hanuman is synonymous with devotion, dedication, and faith. One of his many names add Bhakta Anjaneya. (Bhakta means devotee and Anjaneya is another name for Hanuman.)
It is said that he worshiped Lord Rama in five ways:
1. Naman: taking the name of God
2. Memory: constant memory
3. Kirtanam: singing praises and praises
4. Yachnam: Sincere, selfless plea for deep faith
5. Arpanam: to offer/surrender oneself
It is also a way of worshiping Panchmukhi Hanuman. Hanuman (11th and Rudra Avatar of Lord Shiva) has been praised through mantras, stotras, and hymns.
