P r e fa c e Aloha and very welcome! We are pleased that you decided to come to Landau! Even if you didn‘t chose Landau, Landau did it for you and that’s good. Because you will definitely enrich this city and our university and we are looking forward to that! :) At the moment, the most important information for you is: even if you descend into the complete chaos, loosing your marbles, not knowing where to find the next room or where in hell the Bürgerstraße is situated, you are not alone! The people around you are either feeling the same way or they know this feeling. At least, next semester you will know everything. You will know what and where Xy is, which wine tastes the best or if you prefer beer, what a ´schobbe‘ is, how you answer to ´na?‘ and how ´Leberknepp, Saumagen or Dampfknepp with Woisoß‘ taste like. So there is absolutely no reason to panic! Landau isn’t a big city, but if you feel that way and if you get involved with it, soon it will become your second home! The first step you can do is to accelerate in the first week and use all the offerings. Furthermore, there are lots of university groups: from sports to music to politics and games, everything is there, so that nobody has to be bored. Even the university everyday life won’t be a problem. Don‘t organize your seminars too much, so that you still have enough time for your friends, your hobbies and especially for yourself. The rest will result automatically. The most important thing in the end: studying can make a lot of fun, so don’t take everything too serious and do your thing. If something doesn’t happen the way you want, you can still get in touch with the student council or the AStA, who will stand by your side. We are looking forward to see you at the Kneipentour, the Atriumsfete, the Grauflächenkultivierungen, the department’s parties and other student-like events. But above all, we wish that you can enjoy your life as a student because there is no second chance. (In contrast to exams, there you will have several attempts. Use them!) Lots of love and glamour <3 Cheers, the Palatinate!

d e pa r t e m e n t s With the enrollment in a course of study you are automatically a member of its department. That means that all the students of a course of study form a department. The so-called representatives will then be voted out of the students. The voted representatives are generally called ‚the department‘, even if that’s not the case. The departments are responsible for the direct contact to the lecturers/instructors. For all problems, desires, complaints etc. the representatives of a department are the first contact. If this doesn’t lead into success or if the representatives of a department don’t exist, you can also turn over to the AStA directly. Your present contact person is Laura Karwehl: fachschaften@asta-landau.de The departments support you in the beginning of your studies with information, events etc. You receive further information on the specific pages of the departments. You can find links under: www.asta-landau.de The preceding explanations should explain how you can bring yourself into the university politics. We can only pronounce the recommendation to become active by yourself. It is not only that your later employer will keep an eye on whether you have engaged yourself extending beyond your studies, moreover you can learn a lot (about yourself ), get loads of information (because you have direct access), you can network and furthermore achieve something. StuPa, AStA and the departments are looking forward to new members. Just get in contact! Don’t shy yourselves, because your engagement and your votes are important! some departments introduce themselves in the following!

But of course, there are even more events and parties in sight, which you will all get to know about soon enough! All of this is planned and organized by us, the student body. Our active members take care of planning and execution and hold regular meetings, every two weeks on evenings. Everyone is welcome to participate, especially motivated first-semester students! You can find an overview and additional info on our website at www.psycho-landau.de. Up until now, everything is in German, but if you have specific questions, feel free to write to vorsitz@psycho-landau.de. We wish you a warm welcome and great start, Your student council

Projects In this part of the firsty reader, many of the numerous projects of the university Landau are going to finally introduce themselves. That is about so-called university groups but also about projects of the university itself. University groups can be founded by every student, you only need a good idea and a nice troupe/ company. Then it just matters to convince the student’s parliament of your idea. As university group, you are financially supported by the StuPa and so you have the possibility to realize your ideas. But these ideas have to be beneficial for the university itself and have to be openly designed for every student. Just look on your own what is already there. Maybe you directly find something what appeals you!

AG O r g a n i c Chemistry

and ecological

Here we are: Organic and Ecological Chemistry Materials science meets environmental sciences, the university meets industry, research meets application, or simply freely according to our motto: „Less talking, taking action - Because water us all“. With these few words, our working group is the easiest to describe. The main focus of our research activities is on our project „Wasser 3.0“, which has already received numerous awards (including the Green-Tech Award 2015, the Hans Raab Environment Prize 2016, but also the best thesis on a regional basis 2016). Wasser 3.0 is about the removal of anthropogenic stressors (eg pharmaceuticals, but also PFC or microplastics) from (waste) waters and thus ultimately from our drinking water. Previous methods have not adequately studied the efficient removal of pollutants. We want to change this with targeted, problem-oriented and solution-oriented research. „Without you, everything is lame“: We are always looking for committed junior scientists and offer final theses (M.Sc., B.Sc., M.Ed., and B.Ed. (main focus: Sciences or IT)). Without the energetic support and help of your fellow students, we would not have gotten enough with our large project Wasser 3.0, as they have been involved in numerous student subprojects and are still participating. You can find all information about current and new projects on our homepage (www.mintovation.de or www.wasserdreinull.de), on our Facebook page or on our Youtube channel (#wasserdreinull, #MINTovation). If you want to be a part of our working group, simply contact our team leader Mrs. Jun.-Prof. Katrin Schuhen (schuhen@uni-landau.de).

A m n e s t y I n t e r n at i o n a l Right to education and free speech – no implicitness. We all know it and can observe it every day: People get judged differently due to their descent and origin. This can be through glances, verbal devaluation, or even physical attacks. Still, we are all equal and every human being has a right of RIGHTS! Students, like you have always played an important role in engaging for human rights. We, the members of Amnesty International University Group Landau, help people who are treated degrading and inhuman. We would like to give a voice to them here in Germany too, and want to draw attention to their fates by setting up Information Stands, letter-writing campaigns, panel discussions, screening or concerts. We specifically work against discrimination and racism and foster intercultural and interreligious exchange. We change our themes every Semester and are looking forward to new and exciting ideas of yours! You would like to support human rights? No matter, whether you‘ve got own ideas, or you are simply curious, just come by and join us. We meet once a week during Semester and plan all kinds of different activities. Arbeiterkind Dear first year students, Is your family non-academic? Or academic? Nevermind! We welcome every student who wants to support Arbeiterkind.de. We are a university group in Landau and we do our best to help children from non-academic families to go to university. As peer mentors we assist pupils and answer their questions regarding financial issues, the possible study subjects or going on an exchange semester. What is our goal? Our common goal is, through workshops and personal meetings, to take the fear away from children from working class families and to show them that it is possible to go to university, regardless of their financial status and the education background of their parents.. It is about working for better educational equality, so that everyone is informed about their possible future plans because of the information we provide. Everyone can decide his or her future on their own, based on our support. If you are interested in helping us achieve our goals and making an important big step towards a more equal society, please feel free to contact us. You can also come to our regular meetings. E-Mail: landau@arbeiterkind.de Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ArbeiterKindLandau/ We have two meetings a month. Alternatively please feel free to write us a short E-Mail, so that we can give you further details regarding the next meeting (date, time, place). We are looking forward to meeting you soon. Foodsharing Each year 30-50% of our food ends up being thrown away. That’s about 1,3 billion tons worldwide! In order to stem this madness and to spread awareness for our food’s value a voluntary group has been founded in Landau. Since may 2014 we (Foodsaver) save food from the farmer’s market and several bakeries. On a daily basis we collect everything that hasn’t been sold and wouldn’t look fresh enough anymore the next day. You can also share your food personally: In addition to the facebook group „Foodsharing Landau“ there are 2 of so called „Fair-Teiler“ in Landau where you can use shelves, boxes and a fridge to bring and/or take anything for free. You can use the Fair-Teiler like everybody else who knows about them. That means you don‘t need to be registered as a Foodsaver on the internet platform foodsharing.de. You can find the rules of “how to foodsharing” at the Fair-Teiler. Mostly they are put up to a shelf or the fridge. Besides the “Fair-Teiler” there is a huge foodsharing taking place from time to time. For further information visit or contact www.foodsharing.de, our Facebook-website “Foodsharing Landau Info” or send an e-mail to lebensmittelrettenlandau@gmail.com. You like the idea of foodsharing? Let’s get active! Register at foodsharing.de and become a Foodsaver who can use the “Fair-Teiler” and especially save food from the farmer‘s market or bakeries. We are looking forward to your support! Your foodsharing-Landau Team

N aw i - W e r k s tat t How is a solar cell built up? Why are the leaves colorful in autumn? How do humans and animals get through the winter? In the student laboratory Nawi-factory at the Landau Campus, pupils have the opportunity to get to the bottom of these and other scientific questions. You can discover the researcher in no way without any noise. The Nawi-factory is run by the Chemiedidaktiker Prof. Dr. BjĂśrn Risch and his team. The students of education are also integrated into the organization of this activity. A successful link: on the one hand, more practical reference for the students and, on the other hand, the promotion of the natural sciences interested pupils of the region. In addition, the Nawi-factory is an important learning location for numerous bachelor and master theses by students and research projects of the Chemiedidactics working group of the Institute of Natural Sciences. In the context of the empirical studies, for example, the effect of the Nawi-factory on cognitive and non-cognitive target variables (motivation, learning performance, experimental competence, propaedeutic competence) or the importance of logging during experimentation is evaluated. Q UEER u l a n t e n „Faggot!“ „Tranny!“ „Dyke!“ Believe it or not, but homo- and transphobia are current problems in our society. The LGBT*-Community is often superficially tolerated, which came to light after the debates about educational plans including “sexual diversity” in Baden-Württemberg, Hessen and Sachsen. We’re most definitely far from acceptance. “Die Queerulanten*” is a student group at Landau Campus that deals with sexual orientations, different sexes and gender identities. We want to address the topic of “sexual diversity” and what it means through different events that we organize. Which is why we host a weekly “Stammtisch” (cracker-barrel), the annual IDAHOBIT Events, Parties or do educational work (and more). Everyone (gay, straight, bi, trans, cis etc.) is welcome at our events! :) More informations: www.queerulanten-landau.de info@queerulanten-landau.de Facebook Page: Die QUEERulanten* (Landau)

C l u bs This is the part, where it is our duty to inform you about some majors problems in Landau, which arose over the course of the last months and years: the club landscape in Landau. If you are coming from a bigger town, you have to readjust your expectations – if you want to party hard, you‘re limited to small number of clubs. Logo Logo is a small club. The hidden entrance can only be accessed thought the courtyard. If you dare to go down the steps you enter the party. Although the dance floor is pretty small there are usually lots of people, but at earliest after midnight. Due to its size the club heats up in an instant. Regularly, there are special events such as Drum‘n‘Bass or Uni-parties, but also concerts of regional punk-bands. Usually mixed music: rock, house, electro and hip-hop. Address: Xylanderstraße 2 Colosseum Dance – Buddha lounge – Cocktailbar Address: Wollmesheimer Höhe 5 Monokel A place for the mature kind. Rumour has it, that you have to be at least 40 and single to have fun in this joint. Address: Südring 19 Gloria Legit alternative to Logo. Classic venue for Uni-parties, Electro-parties, live music and even Comedy. Address: Industriestraße 3-5

Every student can hire our car at a good price. Why do you have to pay? Actually we would love to give you the car for free, but as you can guess a car costs lots of money and can get damaged at any time. In other words, if you use our car, you support the car! Day 1: 30€ + Day 2: 25€ + Day 3: 20€ + Day 4: 20€ If you hire the car on a weekend you have to hire it for the whole weekend, but we‘ve got a special offer for weekends: Saturday and Sunday for 45€ 150km are included, every km more costs 0,20€ How can I hire the vehicle? First you have to reserve the car (auto@asta-landau.de). You can collect the car at a fixed hour of your choice, except for Saturdays. During the first half of that hour you are able to return the car and during the second half you can collect it. If you need further information, e.g. which dates are free and so on, you just need to go to our homepage: www.asta-landau.de see: Service -> studentisches Fahrzeug Please get informed about the car with the help of our “Autokalendar”. Better reserve early enough, because the car is often occupied. You have to reserve at least three days in advance.
