Helping the Warfighter Succeed

T

he variety of program areas at AIS show how diverse our capabilities are as a company. The Audio Group, part of the Signals Intelligence Exploitation & Analysis Group, is based out of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The group works with tactical audio and provides audio-based solutions for the warfighter by delivering software tools and providing training.

The group is dedicated to researching the best algorithms and developing software to help with: Enhancement Removing tones, wideband noise and interference Identification Speaker, language and gender identification Transcription Automated keyword searching as well as manual transcription Elis Pomales, Program Manager of the Audio Group, explained that right now the group has three different software baselines: Voice Processing Engine (VPE), Release 2: A streaming capability that allows audio to be cleaned up live, and even allows the speaker and language to be identified in real time. This enables the group to help customers in situations where analysis is needed immediately.

Rome Audio Processing Tool (RAPT-R), Release 3: RAPT-R is the offline version, which allows users to process recovered audio files and analyze them one at a time. There are plenty of possibilities with the offline version since users are not working on live audio.

Rapid Audio Batch Tool (RABT): A bulk processing mode that allows users to build a workflow of different algorithms and categorize and sort audio files into folders.

These capabilities allow employees of the Audio Group to help their customers in myriad ways. New research and development efforts are always being advanced by the team, which helps continually drive customer satisfaction.

Though a lot of the Audio Group’s work is confidential, it is clear that the result of their hard work can be measured by the safety and success of not only warfighters but law enforcement including the FBI, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and other customers that rely on the team’s guidance, knowledge and support.

“It’s very rewarding because we all realize the importance of the work we do,” said Pomales. “We have a topnotch team that is dedicated to providing the very best tools for our warfighters to succeed.”

lis Pomales has been working in the software industry since 1998. Elis was the main architect and developer for the RAPT-R – Revisions 1, 2 and 3 as well as VPE 1 and 2.

Prior to joining AIS, Elis worked in the Audio Group under a different federal contractor. He began his audio career in New Jersey working at

Rutgers University where he created the predecessor to RAPT-R called Software Manipulation of Audio in Real Time (SMART). SMART was created for the AFRL Audio Group and the tool was so impressive, it landed him a job with a local company. Elis and his team are now working on the next version of RAPT-R.

Creating a Brand to Reflect Who We Are

E

stablishing a well-developed brand identity is one of many important steps a company can take to be successful. Quality branding not only improves a company’s image, it positively influences the ways in which current and potential employees connect to the company. A brand is the aura a company gives off and the experience it provides to anyone who comes in contact with it.

Over the course of the year, the Marketing and Communications Department has been on a branding adventure finding the best ways to capture the AIS brand. From this iniative, the identity of AIS will be reflected in items such as letterhead, logo items, signage, the website and more.

Building a Brand Over the past 17 years, AIS has built a reputation for over-delivering cutting-edge research, building the most advanced tools and providing steadfast, professional service to our customers. AIS not only provides what customers need today, but what they will need in the future. These themes helped Chris Penree, Senior Creative, design a brand that captures the company's identity.

“Being intentional with design is extremely important,” said Penree. “We wanted to express how our success as a company has led us to where we are now and having a cohesive brand look and feel helps communicate that to our audiences.”

To capture our brand, the Marketing Department conducted employee and customer surveys, as well as interviews with veteran and new employees.

“We held numerous brainstorming sessions to explore our company’s capabilities and rich history,” said Erin Bushinger, Manager of Marketing and Communications.

“We wanted to understand who AIS is to employees, because they are the essence of the company itself.”

After collecting and reviewing all this data, key themes and attributes were discovered. Some of these themes include: AIS’s brilliant employees are our most important asset, AIS innovatively solves problems and overdelivers, customer relationships are extremely important and the company was born from ethical hackers.

Penree chose visual elements that highlight these themes with the coded pattern of our repeated logomark, high-quality environmental portraiture of our employees and stylized glitch imagery and elements.

Importance of a Brand A strong brand attracts new employees and decreases employee turnover by providing a sense of purpose and direction. AIS has grown exponentially in recent years and with that growth comes the need to hire more of the most talented individuals so we can continue to provide outstanding products. We want to attract top talent, and to compete, we need to present a cohesive look and feel that matches our reputation.

A strong brand also creates customer preference and increases profitability as a result of that established loyalty. It helps create a company image that is memorable, so customers keep coming back.

Next Steps The Marketing Department is in the process of implementing the design into the branding of AIS offices, presentation templates, conference displays, signage, logo items and more. Brand culture and style guides are being created and will be distributed in the coming months.

Also, keep an eye out for a new AIS website design and layout.

New IR&D Process for 2019

AIS HAS ADOPTED a new Internal Research and Development (IR&D) process for 2019. Dr. Rian Quinn, Chief Technology Officer of the AIS Advanced Technology Business Unit, took initiative in the development of this process with the goal of increasing productivity, transparency and communication.

“With this new process, we want to give people a good indication as to why an IR&D project gets funded or why it gets declined,” said Quinn. “We want to provide a complete, open and transparent mechanism for reporting which IR&Ds are selected, why they were selected or why not, what the current status is and even provide people with an opportunity to see the final results of an IR&D when it is completed.”

These projects allow any employee to leverage the IR&D fund to pursue efforts that benefit their respective groups and the company alike.

“You might have a product that you’re working on and you want to add this brand-new widget to it, but you don’t know if it’s going to work or if you can build it, so your customer may not be willing to fund that initial discovery phase,” said Quinn. “Or you might have a concept that you want to make into a product in the future. The IR&D fund helps kickstart the effort and research you’re trying to accomplish.”

Quinn, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Charles Green and a Tech Council representative all have an equal vote with regard to which IR&D efforts are selected.

Quinn sought the assistance of the Marketing Department in creating an editable PDF to make the application process as efficient as possible. The form can be found on the company’s GitLab.

Advancing Radio Frequency Technology at AIS

By Emily Canarelli AIS HIRES VISIONARIES. The work that AIS employee Chris Poore has been doing this year proves it’s true and having “Visionary” on his business card seals the deal.

Chris Poore, a Research Computer Scientist/Visionary at the Rome office, has been hard at work creating what Glen Roberts, Project Manager II, calls a “big software suite” of custom tools and best practices for his bench labor this year. According to Roberts, bench labor is specific to the Systems Analysis and Exploitation (SAE) Group, but it’s similar in concept to IR&D projects in that bench labor must provide a benefit to the team and AIS in general.

On May 31, Poore, who has worked at AIS for ten years, presented a Lunch and Learn session. The topic discussed was transforming results of a previously finished project from proof-of-concept into a useful laboratory tool.

“I took our existing framework for automatic radio frequency (RF) device assessment, made it work for more types of radios, allowed for the incorporation of third-party tools and scripts, and let it all be run from a single computer,” said Poore.

This tool helps quickly and accurately identify device characteristics across different bands of RF, which is an otherwise tedious process.

What I like most about this project is the accumulation and preservation of knowledge from past projects into one readily accessible laboratory tool.

“Let’s say we get a device and we have no idea what kind of wireless communications it uses,” said Roberts. “An engineer like Chris, who is adept at wireless communication protocols, would have to sit there and sift through all the different radio signals and pinpoint which protocol is being used, and that takes a lot of time.”

The work that Poore is doing is significantly reducing the amount of time it takes to perform wireless and embedded security assessments, vulnerability assessments, and the core of what the SAE Group does.

Not only is he saving time and money, the work he has done will easily translate to any other team at AIS that works with wireless protocols or any kind of radio activity.

“I put the code on the company’s GitLab, so it could be used by all and be updated when it aligns with future work,” said Poore.

The result will be faster assessments, quicker turn around to the customer, better products and more results. Roberts appreciates the work that Poore has been doing because it relates directly to the core values of the SAE Group.

“He’s exemplifying what we stand for,” said Roberts. “He’s creating something that not only benefits our team, but it will help all other teams at AIS who may be dealing with RF. That’s why we’re here, to grow as a team, and to help the company at the same time.”

About Chris Poore Poore has an Electrical Engineering Degree from Binghamton University with a background in RF technology and wireless protocols. He has wide-ranging experience working with radios, communication devices and their underlying data. As a member of the SAE Group, he works to analyze, understand, characterize and exploit cyber systems using adversarial techniques.

T

he annual AIS Technical Council (TC) offsite was held in September 2018 in Manchester, Vermont, to create and strengthen relationships among leaders and staff within the research and development teams.

The goal of the TC offsite is to improve technical communication across all AIS teams and increase the overall strength of the teams through collaboration and collective problem solving.

Rick Gloo, Senior Advising Engineer, sees the value the TC offsite brings to the company.

“The TC provides a means to intentionally reinforce communications, expand collaboration opportunities and explore new initiatives in a manner that is unencumbered by team boundaries,” said Gloo.

The offsite was a two-day event with representation from Stargate, the Adaptive Systems Team (AST), The TC offsite is an example of AIS senior the Agile Cyber Solutions (ACS) leadership’s commitment to excellence.

Topics ranged from technical details and results of projects to best practices and collaboration opportunities. The Stargate and AST representatives each won a “Lightning Talk Excellence Award,” which consisted of a $100 gift card.

Open Floor Discussions Open Floor Discussions provided time to seek group feedback on opportunities or challenges observed by TC members. Topics included: 1. Pros and cons of job rotation 2. Approaches to transparency, accountability and ownership 3. Ideas to scale software design practices and reduce team lead bottlenecks 4. Project templates for quickly instantiating new projects 5. Opportunities and approaches to effective team training

Workshop Focus Groups Workshop Focus Groups explored topics identified by TC members that were reviewed by AIS leadership and relevant stakeholders. The four topics included Incentives for Recruiting and Retention, Employee Retention and Work Satisfaction, Burnout and Morale Awareness, and Post-mortem Analysis. The goals of the workshop were to produce work products, identify recommendations, or set the foundation for formal continued exploration. The workshop results and next steps will be shared in late 2018 with new initiatives pursued in 2019.

The TC offsite is an example of AIS senior leadership’s commitment to excellence. It is the TC’s purpose to bring that excellence to daily practices within teams and ultimately the quality of products and services delivered to the customer.

GreyCastle Security Wins Albany Business Review’s Best Places to Work 2018

reyCastle Security is proud to announce that they were again recognized by the Albany Business Review as a “Best Place to Work”. This year, more than 165 companies submitted nominations to be considered a “Best Place to Work”. Winners were selected based on data collected by Quantum Workplace, which compiles data received from confidential surveys given to employees. In 2015 and 2016, GreyCastle Security was named among the “Best Places to Work” in the small business category of 10-24 employees. In 2017 and now in 2018, the company won in the medium business category of 25-49 employees.

“This honor means a lot to us because it shows that even through our rapid growth, we have remained committed to providing a workplace where our employees always come first, and that will never change,” said GreyCastle CEO Reg Harnish.

Twitter CISO Michael Convertino Joins Board of Directors

G

reyCastle Security announced in May of 2018 that Michael Convertino, a renowned cybersecurity expert originally from Utica, New York, has joined its Board of Directors.

Convertino brings with him more than 20 years of industry experience, both in the public and private sectors. He was recently named Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Twitter.

Convertino was influential in protecting U.S. national security, as he commanded a team of 600 cyber telecommunications, communications, signals intelligence

and information operations personnel, developing cyber capabilities for the Department of Defense. He also crafted the standards for the rapid sharing of electronic intelligence, immediately following the 911 attacks.

“When it comes to cybersecurity knowledge, experience and credentials, Michael is truly one of a kind and at the top,” said Dan Kalil, Board Chairman for GreyCastle Security and Vice President of Commercial and Marketing for AIS. “We were fortunate to have worked with Michael during his time with the Air Force and are honored that he has joined our board and that we will be working together once again.”

The Pirate Flag Story:

Remembering Where We Came From

A

A lot has changed since 2001 when AIS was founded. The company has become a national leader in the industry, expanded its presence across the United States and built a headquarters from the ground up. One thing that has always remained the same, however, is the presence of the pirate flag. If you’ve ever walked through the front doors of AIS headquarters in Rome, New York, you may have seen the pirate flag proudly waving on the flag pole. You may not know, though, that this flag has been an essential part of AIS’s identity since the beginning – even before the company officially existed.

Back when Charles Green, CEO of AIS, worked in the Adversarial Science Lab (ASL) at the Air Force Research Laboratory, the pirate flag was an important symbol.

So much so, that when the decision was made to start AIS, the flag became a part of the company’s identity right away.

“The flag was pre-AIS, but we were formed in the ASL, so we inherited it from them,” said Green. “They had adopted the flag because we were being challenged to do things differently.”

Eric Thayer, who is now AIS’s Principal Investigator for the Systems Analysis and Exploitation Group was also working in the ASL with Green before AIS became a company. The lab was doing a significant amount of cyber research, which at that time was not the norm.

“At that point the flag signified ‘the hacker’,” said Thayer. “We had a hacker mentality and approach from the beginning; we had an unconventional way of looking at things and doing things.”

To AIS, being different means more than just standing out from the competition. Having a fun and easy-going

company culture was, and continues to be, one of the most important ways the ASL, and later AIS, stood out from the rest.

“In the Lab, we were dressing and behaving differently and just trying to buck the system, but with our government leadership’s encouragement to do so,” said Green. “It wasn’t always met with the best receptions.

Some other people in the Lab didn’t like how we were doing things, and different leadership came in and out having different opinions about it, but we still did our own thing.”

Dan Kalil, AIS Vice President of Commercial and Marketing, was working close by in the Forensics Lab at the time. The ASL and the Forensics Lab were either in the same room or right next to each other, so they were always connected. Since the labs were so close, they both adopted the idea of breaking the mold of a traditional work environment.

“Our leadership was charged with helping to define, develop and deploy a discipline that was truly in its infancy at that time, so they knew they needed a team that thought and operated differently,” said Kalil. “As a result, they let us establish an almost dorm-like atmosphere where we could get quality work done, while also not taking life too seriously. I remember one time cooking breakfast for everyone and blowing all the circuits in the kitchen upstairs. While we were still respectful, we didn’t concern ourselves with the business side of things or stereotypical office etiquette and behavior.”

Kim Howard, Information Systems Security Manager, remembers that when AIS moved out of the lab and into a new office on Hill Road in 2005, employees kept their senses of humor.

“The floors were so cold at that office in the winter that everyone wore slippers, and you’ve never seen such crazy slippers,” said Howard, with a smile on her face as she remembered some of the interesting slippers employees would wear while at work.

Working hard while still being true to yourself is a difficult task, especially when working in the cybersecurity field. Having the pirate flag waving tall in front of AIS headquarters reminds employees about how essential that balance is, and how maintaining that balance everyday makes us different, like the company has always been. When the Rome office on Brooks Road was built in 2011, it was important to incorporate the flag to represent the company’s heritage. Raising the flag was a way of adding AIS’s own touch into a seemingly corporate building.

“We had a nice new fancy building that looked like a corporate environment,” said Thayer. “Clean walls, shiny floors and big offices, but it didn’t quite have our own flavor. A couple of us went on a mission to the hardware store and got some cables, then we went out after hours one night, put the pirate flag up and raised it. It’s been that way ever since.”

The cybersecurity industry’s landscape has grown drastically over the years. AIS has endured this highly dynamic and emerging field and continues to thrive and stay true to its values.

“To me, the flag represents longevity,” said Kalil. “We’ve been doing this for almost 20 years and if you think of all the companies that have come and gone since our inception, it’s really something to be proud of.”

The Importance of Story Telling Sharing the company’s story has become an increasingly important way AIS connects with customers as well as both current and potential employees.

Instead of presenting AIS’s accomplishments and goals, he decided to share the story of the pirate flag with the attendees. He explained how it started in the ASL and became an important symbol for AIS. “Telling the story about where we came from and what we continue to do to create success not only helps the company, but also helps encourage employees to be innovative and think outside of the box,” said Hovak.

Since the flag has so much meaning, Howard had the idea of giving retired employees a pirate flag as a parting gift.

“I knew it would be meaningful because everyone admires our flag,” said Howard. “When you tell someone you work in Griffiss Park they say, ‘oh are you close to the building with the pirate flag?’. I collect them when they get worn out and fold them up perfectly, and when someone retires they get to take the flag with them.”

Assuring employees know their purpose and the journey this company has been on creates a connection between the employees and the company, as well as each other. Each employee contributes to the writing of AIS’s history, whether they’ve been with AIS since the beginning, or are newly hired. The story of the pirate flag unites the company, keeps employees grounded in our values and helps push AIS toward the next part of our story.

“We’ve had to grow up a little bit, but it reminds us where we came from and who we are at the core. We cannot let go of that,” said Green.

AIS Company Picnic AIS held its annual company picnic on Friday, July 20. Employees and their families enjoyed plenty of food, games, bouncy houses and more!

Breast Cancer Fundraiser GreyCastle employees spent the day wearing pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month.

Community Outreach and Recruitment Initiatives

R

ecruiting for the cybersecurity industry is a continual challenge – Cybersecurity Ventures, the world’s leading cybersecurity researcher, predicts that by 2021, there will be 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity positions globally. To take on this challenge, the AIS Human Resources (HR) Department organizes initiatives throughout the year to help introduce potential employees to the industry and the work that we do. From current high school and college students to interns and principal level engineers, HR puts an incredible amount of energy into finding the best talent. 2018 has been an exciting year for AIS regarding community outreach and recruitment initiatives.

Finding the Next Generation of Employees This spring, 20 students from Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) visited AIS to learn more about the company. Scott Souva, Director of Corporate Development, introduced AIS while some of our newer engineers gave the students advice on how to land a job after graduation. Cheryl Valenti, Senior HR Generalist, sees firsthand the influence that these visits have on the students.

“Students come in and get an in-depth introduction to the industry as well as AIS,” said Valenti. “It helps us find the next generation of employees. We hope to inspire them and get them excited about a future career with us.”

HR has organized many other successful visits from colleges as well. Fulton Montgomery Community College had six students and five professors visit to get an introduction to AIS and discover the many opportunities the cybersecurity field has to offer.

AIS at Career Fairs Having different colleges visit our offices is not the only way HR continues to encourage community outreach and recruitment. Attending career and college fairs throughout the year is an important way AIS creates meaningful ties to our community which helps us reach great talent.

“It’s a fantastic way to get our company out there and attract quality employees,” said Kandis Harter, Talent Acquisition Specialist.

“College fairs are important because not only do we get to meet the students face- It’s a fantastic way to-face, but it’s our opportuni- to get our company ty to promote out there and attract AIS. It’s also our chance to stand quality employees. out against our competitors.”

HR represented AIS at the Rome Free Academy Career Fair this spring.

Valenti attended the fair along with newly hired engineers to help familiarize current students with cybersecurity and the opportunities in the industry.

“We wanted some newly hired engineers to come and talk to the students because they can relate to the experience of choosing a career,” said Valenti. “Students showed interest, and we are happy to get them interested in cybersecurity, so they remember us when applying for jobs.”

Teaching is also a great recruitment method since professors and instructors are able see firsthand the potential of their students. What better way to recruit talent than to go out and teach the next generation of employees?

Here are just a few examples of AIS employees who make an impact in the classroom:

Robert Coccaro Project Manager for Adaptive Systems Technologies Robert began teaching for Utica College in 2017. He teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels at Utica College and currently teaches Principles of Cybersecurity and Software Foundations. In addition, he is part of the team that is developing the initial “self-paced” online cybersecurity certificate program for Utica College.

Richard Gloo Senior Advising Engineer Rick has developed curriculum, labs and instructed classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for Utica College and MVCC in the areas of Linux system security, penetration testing, system vulnerability assessment, network defense, traditional forensics, principles of cyber security and network forensics. Four of Gloo's former students are currently employed at AIS.

Dan Kalil Vice President of Commercial and Marketing Dan has taught Introduction to Computer Forensics at MVCC for almost ten years, as well as Computer Forensics courses at Utica College at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Salvatore Paladino Program Manager for Agile Cyber Solutions Sal has developed curriculum, labs and instructed classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels Utica College since 2010. He taught classes in the areas of principles of cyber security, risk management and policy and homeland security.

Glen Roberts Project Manager II for Systems Analysis and Exploitation Glen has taught Intro to Cybersecurity for a year from 2015 to 2016 at MVCC and he currently teaches undergraduate and graduate Cybersecurity classes at Utica College.

Michael Sieffert Group Lead for Agile Cyber Solutions Mike has taught Software Reverse Engineering (2016 and 2017) and Malware Analysis (2018) at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica, New York. Both classes were taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Two of Sieffert’s former students are currently employed at AIS.

CNY Hackathon

The Spring 2018 CNY Hackathon took place at Utica College and was sponsored by AIS. AIS’s Brodie Davis, Brian Fields, Jacob Hartman, Max Slocum, Tiffany Mahoney and Michelle Advena were volunteers at the event, working behind the scenes to challenge the students.

The CNY Hackathon is a regional intercollegiate offensive/defensive cybersecurity competition designed to improve the state of computer science and cybersecurity education, and more closely align academia with local industry partners. Students participate in challenges that task each team with either penetrating a target or defending their systems from attackers. What a great way to find out what students are up and coming in this field!

AIS celebrated National Intern Day on July 26, 2018, by thanking our 13 AIS interns, and 24 ACE Cadets. We are inspired by their energy, willingness to learn and innovation every day.

Hack Upstate AIS sponsored Hack Upstate this past Spring and Fall in Syracuse, New York. Computer programmers, hardware engineers and others in the product development industry collaborated on intense projects over a short period throughout the events. The mission of Hack Upstate is to unite the greater Upstate New York technology community and contribute to growth of the technology sector in the area.

Project Fibonacci® AIS has participated in the annual Project Fibonacci® Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEAM) Conference for numerous years, which takes place every summer at the Beeches Professional Campus in Rome.

This year, AIS sponsored three students for the conference, Carlos Porter (Buford, Georgia), Braem Felicier (Syracuse, New York) and Naiomi Feliciano (Rome, New York).

The Project Fibonacci® Foundation provides a series of immersive learning programs on STEAM topics in cooperation with local schools, businesses and non-profit organizations.

The goal is to use STEAM education as a catalyst for workforce preparedness and economic redevelopment.

The HR Department collaborated with the Marketing Department to design and develop an exciting program that makes it easy to reward employees who go above and beyond at AIS. Beth Bowers, Senior Vice President and Chief HR Officer, enjoyed the process of creating this program because she knew it would have a positive impact on the company.

“This program will not only give our employees the opportunity to be recognized for their hard work, but they can also recognize the hard work of their colleagues,” said Bowers. “We wanted to create a program that shows appreciation for employees that are extremely dedicated and committed to our company, and who go above and beyond their normal job responsibilities.”

The Special Thanks And Recognition (STARS) Award is given to employees who exemplify one or all of the five AIS values. The values are an essential part of our company’s identity, so it was important to incorporate them into the Employee Recognition Program. Recipients of the STARS Award receive a $100 Visa gift card.

The Success Through Recognizing Incredible Performance by Employees (STRIPES) Award is given to employees who demonstrate outstanding customer service. The STRIPES Award is a customer award only.

Recipients of a STRIPES Award receive $1,000 through payroll and a crystal plaque.

NEW HIRES Larry Hamilton

Program Manager, Department of State and Deputy Program Manager for NANA Larry Hamilton was hired as Program Manager (AIS Maryland) for the Department of State and Deputy Program Manager for NANA. In this position, Hamilton leads and manages the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community services for the Maryland services division. Hamilton was also recently promoted to a Chief Warrant Officer 3 as an Army Reservist. He has been serving since September 1992 and has completed two deployments to Afghanistan.

Catherine Hulser Program Manager, Systems Analysis and Exploitation Group

STAFF CERTIFICATIONS

Catherine Hulser has been hired as Program Manager for the Systems Analysis and Exploitation (SAE) Group. In this role, Hulser supports the SAE Group in providing customers with adversarial knowledge and reverse engineering capabilities. She has more than 10 years of experience working as a contractor in federal contracting across the DoD, with the most experience being with AFRL.

Rian Quinn Cheryl Valenti & Jeremy Painter Senior HR Generalists, Cheryl Valenti and Jeremy Painter earned their certifications from the Society for HR Management as Senior Certified Professionals (SHRMSCP) in July 2018. To celebrate, AIS organized a surprise toast to congratulate them on this incredible achievement and to recognize the hard work they put into preparing for the exam.

“We studied so much for this,” said Valenti. “We would visit each other’s offices and quiz each other on what we learned the night before.”

The SHRM-SCP credential helps establish HR professionals as recognized experts and leaders in the HR field, requiring certain levels of education and years of experience in their roles. This certification allows employees to round out their knowledge and provide full spectrum HR service.

“We are both really proud and excited because we can leverage the knowledge we gained to enhance our department and our company as a whole,” said Painter.

Painter has been in his role at AIS for two years and Valenti has been with AIS for eight years.

Chief Technology Officer of the Advanced Technology Business Unit Dr. Rian Quinn has been named the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the AIS Advanced Technology Business Unit (ATBU). In this position, Quinn works closely with corporate staff, the ATBU Leadership Team, Tech Council and engineers to guide investments in people and technologies that will position AIS for continued success in a constantly changing cybersecurity marketplace. Quinn works out of the AIS Colorado office.

Elis Pomales

Program Manager of the Audio Group Elis Pomales has been promoted to Program Manager of the Audio Group within the SIGINT Exploitation and Analysis Group. Pomales started at AIS in June of 2012 but has been a part of the AFRL Audio Group for 20 years. He started as a Software Engineer in 1998 and quickly became the keystone to the group, authoring and winning numerous proposals, growing the software development team and completing several integration projects with various customers.

The Information Technology (IT) Department has been testing a new containerized mobile mail application called Email+. Email+ is designed to store company mail within an encrypted container that is kept separate from personal data on a mobile device. It offers dual factor authentication, data loss prevention and gives IT the flexibility to scrub the mail container and its contents without ever touching your personal data. Be on the lookout for Email+ in the coming months!

The Work Anywhere Team:

Improving Remote Work

hile AIS headquarters is in Rome, New York, seven additional AIS offices are located across the United States and the company is continuing to expand at a fast pace. More than 70 employees work in customer spaces and there are also employees who work from home. In all, nearly 40 percent of the workforce is located outside of the headquarters location.

To maintain company culture, improve connectivity and uphold high standards for employee satisfaction, the Work Anywhere Team was created to address issues that come from having offices and remote workers in many locations. The team is made up of employees from different areas including Erin Bushinger, Michael Bonadonna, Rob Brutovski, Rob Dora, Steve Flint, Andrey Germakovski, Adam Hoke, Adam Hovak, Craig Miles, Rian Quinn, Myron Schlueter, and Tomasz Tuzel.

The Work Anywhere Team began its journey by creating a list of recurring challenges that come with remote work, then made plans to address them by setting a list of criteria for success. The team collected feedback directly from AIS remote workers, which assisted in planning and developing strategies to move this effort forward.

There were three main objectives established by the team in order to meet its goals: • Define behaviors that are counterproductive and publish guidance that addresses these behaviors.

• Create a baseline definition for connectivity and functionality that employees can expect to experience anywhere; in an office, at a customer site, or while in transit between locations.

• Define a set of best practices for managers responsible for remote workers.

"

There are many resources available regarding the topic of remote work, a favorite the team found being “How to Embrace Remote Work” by Trello, a web-based project management system. This guide offers meaningful advice and strategies on how to improve issues related to remote work, some of which AIS was experiencing. This guide helped the Work Anywhere Team create a new direction for working remotely.

The team is also working on developing a FAQ for remote workers, as well as a guide for mangers who have remote employees. These guides will help not only improve communication and employee morale, but also give AIS a competitive advantage.

“There are currently several hundred thousand unfilled cybersecurity positions in the United States,” said Flint, COO of AIS. “Talented people have their pick of jobs and locations. Companies that can productively employ talent wherever they find it will have a competitive advantage over those companies that require employees to work at a specific location. As a bonus, those same skills and talents that enable us to have productive remote employees, are the same skills that make our home office people productive when traveling, working from home, or at a customer location. It’s about making the employee productive wherever they happen to be.”

At AIS, employees are our most valuable asset. Their dedication and passion for the work they do is clear, so assuring each employee feels connected and has adequate resources is essential. The number of remote workers and new office locations is growing, so the Work Anywhere Team is making sure our company culture is upheld no matter where an employee may find themselves. From New York to Portland, we are one AIS.

“One way to show people that they are valued is through compassion,” said Rob Brutovski of the Rochester office. “We may never be able to resolve all the issues of working remotely, but if we show people that we care about their struggles and try to fix what we can, then I think that creates a culture of ‘one-ness’; that we’re in this together.”

Expanding Our Footprint Syracuse, New York AIS recently put finishing touches on its new operating location in Syracuse, New York. In the heart of Armory Square, the office features a convenient location in proximity to all downtown Syracuse has to offer. The office capacity is 16 to 20 employees.

“We are very pleased with being able to expand to the Syracuse area,” said Steve Flint, Chief Operating Officer for AIS. “We believe the office amenities in addition to the downtown location and the local technology community will assist us in filling the office quickly.”

Security Department Updates:

AIS Receives Superior DSS Rating O

n September 6, 2018, AIS’s Security Department went through a rigorous Defense Security Service (DSS) Inspection. The inspection covers topics including personnel, physical and operations security, security education and training, insider threat, information systems security, foreign travel and suspicious contact reporting, foreign ownership, control or influence (FOCI), export control and various other topics relating to the protection of classified material and national interests.

DSS makes these visits annually to ensure all contractors are following guidelines set forth in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual. When completed, the DSS Industrial Security Representative gives a rating based on all the areas with four possible outcomes: Unsatisfactory, Satisfactory, Commendable and Superior. For the first time in the company’s history, AIS received a Superior Rating!

“This rating is a direct reflection of our company and its core values,” said Cliff Hickock, Security Manager for AIS. “Security of our assets and information isn’t just the Security Department’s responsibility, it is everyone’s responsibility. It is through the hard work, vigilance and attention to detail that we all practice on a daily basis.”

Personal Security Clearance (PCL) Process To the right is the PCL Process. The Security Department’s role is within Steps One and Two – identifying a need for the clearance, initiating the electronic questionnaires for the investigation process, and ensuring fingerprints are done. t the start of 2019, Ross Technologies, Inc. (RTGX) employees and customers will see the name RTGX phased out, being replaced with AIS across the spectrum of operations.

RTGX was founded in 1997 as an information technology solutions provider. As time has passed and business operations continue to integrate, it has been decided to officially merge RTGX into AIS. Going forward, RTGX services will be referred to as AIS Mission Solutions.

To make this transition happen, senior leadership has been working to identify necessary steps and actions needed to integrate all business-related matters under AIS. Departments such as Contracting, Finance, HR and Security have been working diligently to align processes

and systems to make the integration happen seamlessly and successfully. For example, accounting systems need to be merged, which also means payroll systems must be synched along with the respective benefits for all RTGX employees. These benefit changes will go into effect with the next open enrollment period at the end of 2018, so there is much planning and work to be done to get everything in place and changes communicated. In the meantime, tasks such as contract notifications, DD Form 254 changes, and web page integration activities will continue to happen in the background.

"We are in the final stages of completing the integration of RTGX to AIS and a lot of work has gone into making this transition happen,” said Andy Glasscock, Chief Executive Officer of RTGX. “A big thanks to those who are contributing and making this possible. The RTGX staff and I are excited about the change, and our partners and customers have been very receptive as well.”

The current timeline is to have all changes related to the integration made by January 1, 2019. Be on the lookout for additional communications about the processes and changes as they relate to you.
