NETWORKING HIGHLIGHTS

The year started with the BISE Open Call with the theme "Keep the Momentum Going." Members learned about BISE and how to get involved.

A friendly game of Kahoots turned competive with Safety Travelers taking the trophy. After a few new friends and connections were made, the event ended with high expectations for the next event. Will you join us next year?

As anticipated, the BISE Networking event to kick off the second half of the year was a success. We welcomed new and familiar faces to the event. Members connected and added to their professional network.

BISE continues to provide an opportunity for members to connect. Look for our upcoming networking events and sign up!

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

Annually, BISE conducts a membership drive to connect with ASSP members who have not yet joined BISE. During the 2022-2023 administration, BISE focused on students and young professionals to help them increase their participation in ASSP and BISE.

Do you know someone who would benefit from the BISE community? Refer them to the ASSP Membership page to add BISE to their ASSP membership.

C O N N E C T I N G M E M B E R S WITH MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES

The BISE mentoring program has over 10 mentors working with up and coming OSH/EHS professionals. BISE seeks to accelerate the personal and professional development of mentees. This is achieved by providing mentees with guidance, advice, and feedback from mentors with more experience than themselves. The program seeks to meet the needs of BISE members and increase the active roster of mentors and mentees.

Dr. Guillory, Mentoring Program Chair, was featured on the ASSP Case for Safety Podcast Episode 105 discussing mentorship. He shared how mentorship has positively impacted his career and stoked his passion to lead BISE’s program.

If you are intersted in participating in the BISE mentoring program as a mentor or mentee, please scan the code or use the link to submit an interest form.

Creating Opportunities for Excellence

A MESSAGE FROM BISE INCOMING ADMINISTRATOR -

Welcome to the Blacks in Safety Excellence Group! I am Emmanuel Winful, your incoming BISE Advisory Group administrator for 2023-2024. Our group is dedicated to creating a community where black safety professionals can excel in their careers and be recognized for their contributions to the field. As your new administrator, my vision is Creating Opportunities for Excellence. We will achieve this by committing to excellence, innovation, and collaboration and empowering our community of black safety professionals.

To support this vision, we have set the following goals for the next two years:

1. Provide professional development opportunities: The advisory council will continue to offer regular professional development opportunities, such as webinars and open forums. We will also try book clubs and study workshops to help members enhance their skills, knowledge, and competencies.

2. Increase membership and engagement: The advisory council will strive to increase and retain membership by creating a welcoming environment and opportunities for members to engage in networking and professional development.

3. Advocate for representation: The group will advocate for representation by working to increase the visibility of Black professionals in the safety industry and promote their contributions to the field.

EMMANUEL WINFUL 31

4. Celebrate successes and achievements: The advisory council will recognize and celebrate the successes and achievements of its members by promoting a culture of excellence and inspiring others to strive for greatness. This will be done by working with our members to nominate them for safety awards through ASSP, BCSP, and NSC.

5. Collaborate with other practice specialties, common interest groups, and organizations that share BISE goals and values to increase its impact and reach.

6. Facilitate mentorship: The advisory council will revamp our mentorship program that pairs experienced professionals with early-career members to provide guidance, support, and advice on career advancement.

7. Establish partnerships with academic institutions: following mentorship, the advisory council will look for opportunities to establish partnerships with academic institutions to create opportunities for Black students pursuing safety-related degrees to connect with field professionals and gain industry exposure.

8. Host networking events: The advisory council will organize networking events to provide members with opportunities to connect, build relationships, and learn from each other.

9. Promote leadership development: The advisory council will promote leadership development by encouraging members to take on leadership roles through volunteering on the ASSP committee to support their growth and development.

10. Foster a sense of community: The group will foster a sense of community by creating a supportive and inclusive environment where members feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute to the group ' s mission.

We encourage you to join BISE to gain access to a supportive community of likeminded individuals dedicated to promoting diversity and excellence in the safety industry. As a member, you can expand your professional network, learn from experienced mentors, and enhance your skills through various professional development programs and events. By joining us, you become part of a larger movement toward creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace for all safety professionals. Join us in our mission to foster excellence and diversity in the safety industry and be a part of a community that values your success.
