MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT Happy 2020! It’s hard to believe that just a few weeks ago we entered a new decade. As with most “new years,” it’s a time of reflection and a time to set resolutions. However, this year, in particular, allows us the opportunity to have a brand new outlook on long term goals and what we want to accomplish as a district over the next 10 years — the possibilities are endless. I couldn’t be happier to find that students and teachers alike came back from Winter Break with a positive mindset, recharged and ready to take on the spring semester. I love the energy I’m seeing on campuses.

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that in November 2019 voters approved a Bond proposal that will allow for $315 million in capital improvement projects while not raising the KISD property tax rate. In early January, Keller ISD went to market and sold the bonds, getting an interest rate of 3.1274 percent. Work is already underway on the design phase of our replacement campuses, while the rest of the projects will be rolled out over the next three years.

Many months of creative and detailed work by the District’s Long Range Facility Planning Committee and then the KISD Citizens Bond Advisory Committee led to the creation of this Bond proposal. We are excited that the rest of the community showed support for the projects its neighbors and peers selected. Our community believes in providing exceptional educational opportunities, and we appreciate its trust and confidence in us as we begin these projects that will impact all of our 42 schools. We have so much to look forward to this spring! We kicked off the new year with our wonderful KISD Education Foundation awarding nearly $100,000 in grants to 23 educators at 14 campuses across the District, competitions are in high gear among our athletics teams, fine arts groups, and academic and CTE organizations; and we have several fun, engaging family events coming up, such as the always popular Casey’s Kids Fun Run and Health Expo in March and KISD Letterland Day in April. Board Member Spotlight | Craig Allen Where did you grow up, and what schools did you attend?

I grew up in a small town in upstate New York, not far from Saratoga, where I spent my K-12th grade years and graduated with a class of only 70 students. I received my undergraduate degree in Business & Marketing from the State University of New York, College at Oswego. In addition, I have a master’s degree from the University of Arizona in Higher Education & Student Personnel, and I’m currently working toward my doctorate in education from at Texas Christian University.

What was your favorite subject in school?

Math. Loved it all – geometry, algebra, and calculus!

As a kid, who was your role model?

My mother. She was so kind, so well respected, and she gave so much of herself to others.

What is one quote or saying you live by?

Hire good people and get out of their way.

What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?

Skydiving! It was a 10,000-foot jump (done as a tandem jump) with more than 5,000 feet of free fall. It was absolutely exhilarating!

Describe your perfect afternoon.

Sunshine, blue skies, and on a golf course with good friends.

Why did you want to serve on the KISD Board of Trustees?

I believe I understand education pretty well, and I understand business well. However, the business of education is not like other businesses, and so I feel my voice is important for a Board that is responsible for governance. I want to make a difference and I know that our schools are an incredibly important vehicle for improving the lives of our future generations.

If you could offer one piece of advice to the students of Keller ISD, what would it be?

STOP worrying about grades. Focus on the learning. Learning how to learn and make meaning out of what you do in school is more important than a test grade. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do your best work, you should always work hard in school, but it does mean that if you do poorly on a test – just figure out why and grow from that experience.

VOTERS APPROVE $315 MILLION BOND PROPOSAL Keller ISD voters approved the District’s $315 million Bond Proposal in November 2019 by a vote of 53.46 percent to 46.54 percent, which will help fund 11 major capital improvement projects impacting each of KISD’s 42 campuses.

Included in the 2019 Bond Proposal is the replacement of four elementary campuses; technology, security, and mechanical upgrades across Keller ISD; major renovations to Fossil Hill Middle School and Keller Middle School; construction of an indoor extracurricular facility at each of the District’s four high schools; and construction of an industrial trades and agriscience center. Despite the breadth of these projects, Keller ISD taxpayers will not see an increase to the school district tax rate.

The slate of projects were selected by a group of community members that composed KISD’s Citizens Bond Advisory Committee (CBAC), which itself built off months of work by KISD’s Long-Range Facility Planning.

Keller ISD’s 2019 Bond Proposal has its origins in the 2017-18 school year when the District invited thousands of stakeholders into a visioning process that resulted in a new set of District core values. Those core values served as the foundation for the District’s Long-Range Facility Planning process, during which more than 260 individuals reviewed ways in which Keller ISD could better align with those core values.

The Long-Range Facility Planning Committee helped develop a Long-Range Facility Plan for the District, which was adopted by the KISD Board of Trustees in the spring of 2019 and featured 66 projects which totaled nearly $1.2 billion to be considered by the District over the next 10 years. The Board then convened the CBAC which prioritized projects into a bond package to put in front of KISD voters.

The result of all of this work from the KISD community was a $315 million bond package that could be executed without the need to raise KISD’s tax rate.

“During the entire process, our CBAC committee members and KISD staff worked tirelessly to make sure that the community understood what they were trying to accomplish through this Bond,” said KISD Board President Cindy Lotton.

“Thankfully, our community asked questions, engaged in the process, and ultimately passed a measure that will help us keep moving in the desired direction. We are grateful for their support!”

BOARD APPROVES 2020-21 INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDAR Keller ISD’s Board of Trustees approved the 2020-21 Instructional Calendar at its December 2019 Meeting, providing families with next year’s dates before the calendar turns to the new year.

A committee of more than 40 participants – including parents, community members, and teachers from all grade levels, content areas, and specialized programs, along with District administration and support staff – met throughout the fall to determine the start and end dates, professional development days, and holiday breaks for the 2020-21 school year.

Committee members compiled a calendar based on past calendars, considering neighboring districts, and gathering feedback from KISD campuses and community members throughout the design process. The Calendar Committee considered a calendar that includes 75,600 minutes and 187 teacher work days.

Key changes to the 2020-21 Instructional Calendar include a mid-fall four-day weekend for students at the beginning of November. Past calendars have included a mid-fall extended weekend in October around Columbus Day, but the 2020 break was moved to the weekend prior to Election Day. With several Keller ISD campuses expected to serve as polling locations, the decision was made to not hold classes on Election Day, November 3, but to hold a Student Holiday/Employee Professional Development Day in order to limit distractions to the educational environment.

DID YOU KNOW? JOIN A SEMESTER OF KISD COMMUNITY AMBASSADORS Keller ISD parents, residents, business leaders, and employees are invited to become a KISD Community Ambassador.

This semester-long program is held twice each school year (fall and spring), and includes four evening meetings. Ambassadors-intraining will learn more about how Keller ISD operates beyond the classroom, with the opportunity to interact with the District’s senior leadership. Dinner is provided at each session, and those who complete the program receive an official Keller ISD Community Ambassadors shirt.

Launched by the Board of Trustees in 2013, the Community Ambassadors program provides District stakeholders with a front-row seat as KISD leaders make informal, interactive presentations and offer participants the opportunity to ask questions, provide comments, and make suggestions.

If you could be an animal, which would you choose and why?

Snow cone, duh! You can put multiple flavors on it at once!

I’ve always been in love with dancing and singing ever since I was little. That’s why Show Choir is such a big part of my life!

I would probably be a parrot or exotic bird so I could soar over the beautiful jungle tree tops.

Snow cone! I really like ice cream, but I don’t like cones for some reason.

Drawing! Traditionally and digitally, especially character design. I draw a lot and even though I have a lot to improve on, I’m pretty good at it!

I would probably be a cat, mainly because I like cats the most.

They’re really agile and they have nine lives!

I like Rainbow Sherbet ice cream because it usually has more flavor and it doesn’t color my lips.

I can do magic tricks with cards that I learned from watching YouTube.

I would like to be a squirrel so I can make fun of dogs. Dogs bark at squirrels all the time, and they must think, “Hee hee hee… you can’t get me!”

Snow Cone.

My unique talents are art, dance, climbing, and cuddling. I love to create art, I can climb anything, and I give great hugs.

I would be a kitten because they are my favorite animal and are very cuddly.

SECURITY MAGAZINE RANKS KELLER ISD 12TH IN NATION FOR K-12 SCHOOL SECURITY Keller ISD was recently ranked 12th in the nation, and first in the state, in the 2019 Security 500 Rankings list for K-12 Education in the November issue of Security Magazine.

The Security 500 Benchmarking Survey is based on data supplied by both the organization and public records. The Security 500 tracks 18 vertical markets, collects unique data, and applies it to key metrics including: security spending per person, revenue, and the number of security employees and officers. The purpose of the Security 500 is to create a reliable database, to measure organizations, and to create a benchmarking program among security organizations.

“We are so fortunate to have Kevin Kinley and his team leading our safety and security efforts in Keller ISD,” said Dr. Rick Westfall, Keller ISD Superintendent. “Student safety is our top priority, which is why Kinley and his department’s review of our security measures is an ongoing effort. When it comes to safety we insist on having our community’s input and working closely with law enforcement officials – together, we are fully committed to keeping our schools safe.”

Keller ISD has a total of 21 security officers and eight police officers assigned to the District.

“With the full support of our Board and Superintendent, we have several security measures that distinguish us from other districts,” said Kevin Kinley, Director of Safety and Security for Keller ISD. “We take a proactive and preventative approach to safety. What we are most proud of is our online school threat assessment protocol that we implemented three years ago. This is a model program, providing full wrap-around services, that we had the forethought to put into place prior to the state mandate of Senate Bill 11. Many districts have inquired about our threat assessment.”

To add to the canine drug and bomb detection program, Keller ISD now also has a gun detection dog. This canine service is available 24/7 and provides random patrols/searches of secondary campuses. This allows the District to detect for guns that have been fired, guns that have not been fired, and ammunition. These are a few of the many unique initiatives Keller ISD has in place to keep students and staff safe.

This is a meaningful recognition for us as we truly value the opportunity to serve Keller ISD students and staff,” Kinley said. “We are always working to enhance our safety efforts and are excited to implement the new initiatives made possible through the passage of the 2019 Bond. I am so proud of my team and its dedication to the security of our educational environment.”

#CelebrateKISD During football season last fall, Central HS students showed off their spirit and talents during an energetic morning Pep Rally that was featured on CBS 11.

This year’s Keller Shake competition, where elementary theatre students demonstrate strong voice, diction, eye contact, and a firm handshake, included winner Ava McFarland from Eagle Ridge ES, and finalists: Martha Kariuki from Freedom ES and Christian Hayes Florence ES.

KISD Fine Arts hosted a one-day art competition, where students created art on the spot and had their entries judged at the end of the day.

Fossil Ridge HS was recently recognized as a Continuing AVID National Demonstration School, following its initial distinction in 2016. AVID is a kindergarten-through-postsecondary system that changes underperforming students into confident, college-going scholars and graduates.

Independence ES hosted a “Mix It Up” lunch that gave students the opportunity to step out of their comfort zones and get to know others, ultimately bridging differences and building an important life skill.

Indian Springs MS Partners in PE paired up with buddies at a special “Welcome to the Carnival” event, as part of Sensational Sensory Day.

Campuses around the District held beautiful events honoring Veterans for their service which included heartwarming assemblies and performances, special breakfasts, and parades.

KISD students and staff celebrated Storybook Character Day by dressing up as their favorite literary characters and parading down the halls for all to enjoy.

Central HS senior Victor Neiva, who finished in seventh place overall at the UIL Class 6A State Championship, celebrated with his CHS Cross Country coaches.

The Keller ISD Education Foundation spent two days delivering 26 awards totaling $99,498.78 to 23 Keller ISD educators at 14 campuses across the District. These awards will provide funding for innovative educational projects that stimulate student creativity and expand the existing curriculum.

KISD students and staff overwhelmingly fulfilled a wish from a WWII Veteran who requested 100 birthday cards for his 100th birthday. He received hundreds, if not thousands, of handmade cards by campuses around the District.
