I have ser ved on the Governing Council for the past 4 years having been elected in 2015 and for the term 2018-2019 served as the ABI President, a position I hand over this year to Ron Harrison who will also lead the strong Governing Council team I have had the pleasure of working with. The team has continued in its successes furthering the ABI objectives.

Chairman’ s Welcome Note The role of Chairman of the Board is played very much in the background and within the Governing Council save for the AGM when that office chairs the meeting. This will be my first time at chairing an AGM.

This next term will see a new President lead a strong GC which will include a newly appointed member bringing fresh ideas to take the ABI forward.

The investigation sector is changing. In recent times we have seen some senior Investigators slip into retirement as the challenges that GDPR bring resign them to retire rather than face the new changes. A new generation is noticeably professionalising and claiming a stake in what has been for decades an archaic closed industry that no longer fits easily in the more transparent methodologies demanded by this new legislation. I am pleased to have chaired over an organisation that leads the marketplace in embracing the changes and giving opportunities to the next wave of investigators, which we will see over the next few years will inevitably shape the ABI to an even greater professional body fit for the new purpose that lies ahead.

In closing I wish you all a successful AGM and look forward to seeing old and new friends in Anglesey this May.

Bruce Sackman Behind the Murder Curtain

Bruce Sackman served as the Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), Office of Inspector General, Criminal Investigations Division, Northeast Field Office until May 2005 when he retired after 32 years’ service. In this capacity, he was responsible for all major criminal investigations involving VA from West Virginia to Maine. During his tenure he was involved in hundreds of investigations involving allegations of fraud, corruption, false claims, thefts, patient assaults, pharmaceutical drug diversions and suspicious hospital deaths. He was also responsible for supervising the successful investigation of the nation’s first homicide conviction in connection with pharmaceutical research. His cases involving medical professionals who have murdered their patients have been featured on the Discovery Health Channel, CNN, MSNBC, America’s Most Wanted and on Home Box Office. He is the recipient of many awards for his investigations and for his efforts in encouraging the profession of forensic nursing. Mr. Sackman has lectured at several forensic related conferences, State police organisations, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centre, universities and medical related symposia. He is the co-author of the new book “Behind the Murder Curtain, Special Agent Bruce Sackman Hunts Doctors and Nurses Who Kill Our Veterans and the article “When the ICU becomes a Crime Scene” for Critical Care Nursing Quarterly. Mr. Sackman is currently self-employed as a licensed private investigator in New York City specialising in healthcare related matters. Under contract he directs all major investigations for a major New York metropolitan regional healthcare system. He is the President of the Society of Professional Investigators in New York City.

The Peter Heims Lifetime Achievement Award

This is a relatively new award, which is dedicated to the memory of past President Peter Heims, who sadly passed away in April 2013. This is not an annual award but the recipient is chosen by the GC only when it is considered a member has achieved great advances for the association during a long and loyal membership.

Peter James Patron of the ABI & Award Winning Crime Writer PETER JAMES is one of the UK’s most treasured crime and thriller novelists. His Roy Grace detective novels have sold over 19 million copies worldwide and are now published in 37 territories. Peter’s Roy Grace novels have had 12 consecutive Sunday Times No 1s. In the Autumn of 2012, 'Not Dead Yet' toppled the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy off the No 1 paperback fiction slot, ending its 25 week domination of the chart and in May 2015, 'You Are Dead', derailed 'The Girl On The Train’ from its month long chart domination going straight in at No 1 in the Sunday Times bestseller charts. ‘Love You Dead’ in hardback was Peter’s eleventh Sunday Times No 1 bestseller and Peter’s first nonfiction title ‘Death Comes Knocking’ written in association with Graham Bartlett, Head of Sussex Police was published in July 2016, scoring Peter a hat-trick of titles in the Sunday Times charts within a month. He has written thirteen Detective Superintendent Roy Grace novels to date with the fourteenth due for publication in May 2018.

Peter’s novella, ‘The Perfect Murder’ (2010) went straight in at No 1 in the iBooks chart and spent 40 consecutive weeks in the iBooks Top 10. It was adapted into a play called 'The Perfect Murder' which had its first, smash hit, tour starring Les Dennis in 2014 and toured again with Shane Ritchie and Jessie Wallace in Spring 2016. In 2015 he was voted by WH Smith readers as The Best Crime Author of All Time, in 2016 he was awarded the Crime Writers Association Diamond Dagger Award, an award to mark sustained excellence and significant contributions to crime writing; and in 2017 received the First Rheinbach Glass Dagger Award for Crime Fiction.

Ron Harrison - President Elect 2019 The Association is very proud to announce the appointment as President-Elect for 2019-2020 the highly respected member and Governing Council Discipline Officer, Ron HARRISON. Ro n H A R R I S O N h a s b e e n i n v o l v e d i n L a w enforcement for nearly 50 years, as a dedicated detective with the Metropolitan Police for 30 years he ser ved on many specialist squads such as The Metropolitan & City Police Company Fraud Dept, The Drugs Squad and various Regional Crime Squads, working on major crime both national l y and internationally, being commended at the highest level on numerous occasions.

On retiring from the Police in 1999 shortly after he joined Roy HERRIDGE QPM working for Surelock Asset Management Limited, a well respected and long established investigative and security consultancy, initially carrying out fraud / crime investigations.

In 2000 Ron was instrumental in setting up a new Surelock company Surelock International Limited, following a very successful cradle to grave investigation involving intellectual property rights and counterfeit clothing for a US brand / celebrity, as a result of which the company were approached by several other brands to represent them in UK and worldwide. He has since carried out investigations in South Korea, Japan, Turkey, France and Switzerland where the judicial authorities commended us for our professionalism. Ron is a recognised expert in this field and represents some of the most prestigious brands in the world protecting their intellectual property rights and assisting the authorities in gathering evidence to prosecute offenders. Surelock has an excellent working relationship with the respective authorities in UK, Police, Trading Standards and UK Customs and are active members of The Anti-Counterfeiting Group (ACG).

Currently the Operations Directors for Surelock being responsible for the day to day running of the company, liaising and meeting with clients, supervising a dedicated team of investigators and consultants, primarily dealing with security surveys / risk assessments, IP, fraud, undercover, surveillance investigations and countermeasures sweeps.

Has been a member of the ABI since November 2009, initially attending branch meetings, then got more involved sitting on selection panels for new members, in May 2018 became a member of the General Council and was appointed the Discipline Chairman.
