Former Students Return as Mentors
ince 1986 CAMEO, an auxiliary of the Assistance League of Long Beach, has supported under-served, academically promising high school and city college students, guiding them to help identify and develop scholastic and professional opportunities. Recommended by school counselors based on need and academic promise, prospective CAMEO students complete an application and interview. Students then participate in a comprehensive curriculum, which includes monthly enrichment workshops, cultural activities and paid summer internships with local business partners. Most importantly, CAMEO students are paired with an adult mentor who guides them toward their desired goals.
For the 2021-2022 year, the impact of the CAMEO mentoring program on the Long Beach community was never more apparent. Maria Harris, the CAMEO Mentoring Program Chair, was especially gratified to see former mentees return as successful professionals, eager to give back to their community. Elena Roman, Rosa Ruiz and Sara Manangon returned to the program eager to help others. This year’s mentors have brought the program full circle! Elena Roman, one of the newest mentors and a literacy teacher for elementary school students, explains how the CAMEO program helped her visualize her future. “I knew I wanted to go to college, but I didn’t have the tools.” Roman, who originally thought she wanted a career in science, learned through her CAMEO experiences that she was destined for a career in education. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree, teaching credentials and a master’s degree in linguistics. Rosa Ruiz, a former re-entry student and mother of three, describes her experiences as enriching and inspiring: “I grew
up in Mexico and wouldn’t have been able to have these opportunities without CAMEO.” Ruiz completed her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and earned her teaching credentials from California State University, Long Beach. “The overall experience with CAMEO was amazing because you have this big support system of mentors, not just your own,” stated Sara Manangon, another mentor who graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in marketing. Male and female mentors are working or retired professionals who provide one-on-one mentoring support to enhance each student’s educational and personal development. Each mentor commits to mentoring a high school student for the full three (3) years of the program, allowing the mentor to provide stability and consistency in the mentee’s life. Meetings are held on Saturdays. Mentors are privileged to watch their mentees gain academic and personal skills.
