THOUGHT PROVOKING

The Design process began in December. I was feeling an edgy baroque romantic vibe. Dark and monochromatic, sculptural furniture pieces that if not for the artwork would blend into the sultry smoky walls. All of this was falling into place until the world took a turn into where we are today - then so did my vision for this room.

As a child, I remember sneaking into the men’s only lounge to look for my father at the Standard Country Club in Atlanta GA. I would see the smoke, drinks, and card playing. The conversations were only understood by businessmen and they seemed distant and important. Women were not welcome. This was my first memory of the N word. I didn’t fully understand but I knew it felt wrong. I was 5 at the time.

I wanted to express the Library as a room of diversity. My vision has remained the same but has taken on an unexpected direction of interpretation and individual discovery. The pallet is dark, mesmerizing, and thought provoking. My wish is to create a judgment free space to discover beauty and truth in oneself. I have had the privilege to be inspired for this project by Jill Ricci of Parlor Gallery, Gavin Benjamin, Franko Lacosta, Jennifer Gennari, Janell Designs and many others...thank you for being my friends and supporting me on this journey.

WORKSPACE The recent restrictive lockdown has gotten everyone re-thinking their office spaces. We designed the office to excite the senses and give the occupant a sense of joy, movement, and discovery without having to venture too far. Although it’s a workspace, we wanted the user to feel like a world-traveler despite the need to stay close to home this year. We incorporated exotic ikat and Greek key patterns with the area rug and drapery to inject energy into an otherwise orderly and luxurious ensemble of refined surfaces, subtly textured grasscloth wallpaper, and other textural accents.

KITCHEN + BUTLER’S PANTRY

SLEEK/EARTHY/NATURAL

We were chosen by the homeowners to help set the tone for the interior design of the home based on their inspiration images. They wanted an overall Asian styling with a cool California modern flare. We worked with them in designing and specifying the cabinetry, as well as the permanent fixtures for plumbing, tile and countertops for the kitchen, along with the butler’s pantry, bar, laundry room, pantry, mudroom and all the bathrooms.

Selecting materials that were sleek yet earthy and natural was extremely important to create this aesthetic and the kitchen is the showcase of these elements. The decision to go with a flat door style with hidden hardware allows the dramatic graining of the naturally finished walnut custom cabinets to shine, becoming the focus of the kitchen. The Silestone countertops in a subtle white marble look give some airiness to the space, incorporating the same material as a waterfall edge on the island and up the backsplash carries your eye from the floors up through the space. Rich jewel tones and mixed metals layered over these earthy bases fill the space making it not only feel modern but comfortable and warm. The cozy breakfast lounge makes this working kitchen the perfect place to entertain or gather with family and friends.

ZEN MASTER SUITE A Minimalist Approach With A Warming Ambiance The soft lines of the mural wall blend beautifully with the natural vein of the fireplace stone, drawing the eye across the room. By incorporating simple, yet distinguished furnishings, the space is tied together with comfort and sophistication in mind.

The beginning and ending of the day is spent in the master bathroom and walk-in closet, where opulence and practicality were in mind while designing.

My inspiration for the design of Julian’s bedroom was imagining a nine year old boy’s curiosity about world, travel and life. The palette and furniture were selected so that the decor will grow with him.

We created a timeless space for homework, reading and dreaming big dreams!

SOOTHING SPACE We envisioned an entertaining space that was both cool and modern yet comfortable and soothing.

To create the space, we started with one of the most important elements in the room, the bar. Sleek dark high-gloss stained oak cabinets paired with a dark ultra-durable matte countertop to anchor the space and become a bold element in the room. Softer earth tones in the fabrics and decorative elements in the room create a calming juxtaposition to the strong bar. Taking inspiration from the client’s heritage we brought in layers of natural materials and vintage pieces with Asian influences to deepen the feel of a zen place to relax and enjoy.

MUDROOM

TRANSITION The mudroom is designed to have the grandeur of a foyer, but with a more personalized and intimate feel.

Motifs and materials, like the scenic wallcovering and buckwheat filled cushions (traditionally used in Japanese meditation pillows), pay homage to the heritage of the inhabits. A cheerful atmosphere provides a place to release the tension of the day while custom built-ins and closets offer space to remove more physical baggage.

The enclosed powder room invites guests to a ceremonial hand washing experience before entering the home’s main quarters. Ultimately, the space functions as a transition from the outer to the inner world with a design that is rooted in traditions of the past, responsive to the needs of the present, and reflective of the mindful living practices of the future.
