BUILDING DEPARTMENT A building application is a commitment to safety. The Ontario Building Code Act requires that you obtain a building permit before starting construction. By applying for a building permit, you ensure that your project meets building code, fire, health, and safety standards.

Projects That Require a Building Permit: • New buildings or structures greater than 10 square metres (108 sq. ft.) in total floor area, measured by the outside dimensions, or any size if they include plumbing. This includes sheds or other accessory buildings including shed packages purchased from a store.

• Addition to existing buildings or structures.

• Renovations including plumbing, insulation, structural, etc.

• New or replacement decks.

• Wood burning appliances and chimneys, including new or replacement of existing components.

• Replacement of windows or doors if the rough opening size is enlarged.

• Relocation of plumbing fixtures.

• Solar panels on new or existing structures.

• Repair or replacement of all building foundations.

• Note that all load bearing cement slabs for houses require engineered design and all load bearing slabs for garages greater than 576 sq. ft. require engineered design.

Projects that DO NOT Require a Building Permit: • Accessory buildings (1 storey) with a total floor area of 10 square meters (108 sq. ft.) or less. Note: Zoning Bylaw requirements must be followed – please call the office for your setback information.

• Fences – Please call municipal office for fence by-law requirements.

• Replacement of plumbing fixtures (toilet, sink, bathtub, shower, hot water tank) in their original locations.

Community Centre 88 Alma Street, Norwood Community Centre The Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre is located at 88 Alma Street in the village of Norwood. The Community Centre is the premiere multipurpose complex in the area featuring: • An NHL-sized ice surface with a capacity of more than 700 spectators • A mini rink at the top of the stands for the kids to play mini stick hockey • The main ball diamond on the grounds, as well as a secondary diamond on the neighbouring high school grounds • A fully functional concession that serves inside and outside events • A paved walking trail • A new playground in the McNeil-Metcalfe park area • A new splash pad, which adds another feature for the enjoyment of your children.

• An improved skate park, featuring smooth concrete surface for easier riding • A banquet hall/multi-purpose room seating 240 with a fully functional kitchen, a licensed bar and a 65” smart TV for your use • A board room for smaller meetings Everything is accessible and barrier-free and, whether it’s a sporting event, a wedding reception, a meeting, a birthday party or just a day to play, staff will do their utmost to accommodate you.

Our 35-member team responds to a variety of emergencies, including fire suppression, motor vehicle accidents, medical assistance, shore-based ice and water rescue, public hazards, farm, industrial, and home accidents to name a few. Fire investigation, prevention, and public education are an integral part of our service and are supported by many volunteer activities in collaboration with our Firefighters Association.

HOME SAFETY To help our emergency service providers to locate you, please ensure your 911 number is visible from the roadway. Working smoke alarms are required by law to be on every level of your home, including outside all sleeping areas. Test your alarm monthly and replace the batteries twice annually; replace your alarm after 10 years. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, tasteless toxic gas; you are now required to have an alarm to detect this gas and keep your family safe. Have a Fire Escape Plan to ensure everyone makes it outside in the event of a fire. GET OUT AND STAY OUT!!!

Asphodel-norwood historical society Collecting, preserving and promoting the history of our area is the mandate – and the passion – of the people who founded and continue the work for the Asphodel-Norwood Historical Society.

Recently, we have moved to a more spacious building and are occupying the old Municipal Rooms located in the Hamlet of Westwood, where our extensive collection of artifacts, newspapers, genealogies, photographs, history and records are on display.

PUBLIC WORKS & ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES 4440 Highway #7, Norwood

The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining all the township roads as well as the village streets. This includes grading and dust control, ditching and culvert maintenance, gravel spreading and surface treatments, emergency deployment during severe weather events and many other day-today maintenance duties. In the winter, the department also takes responsibility for plowing, sanding and salting of municipal streets, roads and sidewalks, as well as snow removal.

The Norwood Transfer Station is located at 187 County Rd 40.

Welcome to the Economic Development and Beautification Advisory Committee The Beautification Committee was formed in 2008 and the Economic Development Advisory Committee was formed in 2013. The two committees merged in 2017 to form the newly appointed “Economic Development and Beautification Advisory Committee”.

This newly formed committee is an Advisory Committee consisting of volunteers and members of Council. The committee reports issues and policies to Council that may affect: ▪Development ▪Tourism ▪Marketing ▪Promoting our rich agricultural heritage The Committee works hand and hand with the Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development (PKED) as well as with Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA).

You will find this guide to be a great asset showcasing a majority of our businesses and contact information at your fingertips and to help build on successful events such as the “Showcase Asphodel-Norwood”.

Established in 1868, the Norwood Fair has evolved as one of the premier Agricultural Fairs in Ontario. Wisely the Directors of the Norwood Agricultural Society have always and continue to invest all proďŹ ts back into infrastructure, providing fair goers with amenities to make their visit a most enjoyable experience. The Fair Grounds combined with the AsphodelNorwood Community Centre, Splash Pad, Playground, Ball Diamond and High School Field provide an excellent venue for many other attractions.

royal canadian legion military museum The award-winning Royal Canadian Legion Military Museum is located on the second floor of the former 1892 High School at King and Alma Streets in Norwood. The displays focus on the First and Second World Wars, with numerous historic photographs, oil paintings, badges, uniforms, and memorabilia.
