Welcome to the Roaring Fork Valley

REAL ESTATE BROKERAGE IN THE ROARING FORK VALLEY

The Roaring Fork Valley is a geographic region on Colorado’s Western Slope that includes the communities of Aspen, Snowmass Village, Basalt, Carbondale, and Glenwood Springs. Being at the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the Roaring Fork Valley reaches from Aspen to Glenwood Springs along the Roaring Fork River. At the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado rivers is in the historic city of Glenwood Springs, where modern society established itself within the valley. While this area was the home of nomadic Ute Indian tribes before the mining boom in the late 1800’s, early settlers saw the potential of turning the area into a highly regarded tourist destination. The arrival of the railroads in 1887 brought the first visitors to enjoy the area’s famous hot springs, and the rest is history. Now, each community throughout the Valley organically has grown with unique characteristics and amenities that attract visitors from around the globe. From a legacy of extreme skiing in Aspen and Snowmass Village, to world-class fly-fishing in Basalt, and a rich ranching heritage in Carbondale, the Roaring Fork Valley offers a little bit of everything to all who visit and reside here.

As the Roaring Fork Valley’s real estate authority, we strive to continue leading the way with strategic innovation throughout the valley, while providing irreplaceable value to our clients around the world. With 12 offices located throughout the valley, we have the widest coverage and strongest presence of any other brokerage on the Western Slope. Our Glenwood Springs area office Roaring Fork Sotheby’s International Realty serves the communities of New Castle, Silt, RIfle, Parachute, and Battlement Mesa that are west of Glenwood Springs.

Our Communities

IN THE ROARING FORK VALLEY AND BEYOND.

ASPEN

Located 200 miles southwest of Denver and 130 miles east of Grand Junction, Aspen is at the southeastern end of the Roaring Fork Valley. The Roaring Fork Valley stretches from Glenwood Springs in the northwest end to Aspen on the southeast end and is surrounded by the White River National Forest. Aspen encompasses 3.66 square miles on a relatively flat valley floor, and is surrounded on 3 sides by Aspen Mountain, Smuggler Mountain and Red Mountain. Aspen is internationally renowned as a winter and summer resort.

Aspen was first developed around the 1880s as a silver mining camp. By the 1940s it became better known for white powder than silver, in large part to Chicago industrialist and philanthropist Walter Paepcke and his wife, Elizabeth. The two became Aspen’s cultural ambassadors, touting Aspen’s natural aesthetics as a place where the body, mind and soul could thrive. Many joined them creating an Aspen renaissance.

Today, this alpine village, surrounded by the public lands of White River National Forest, is an eco-oasis. It has both a small-town charm and an urban sophistication, among the reasons international second and third-home owners are drawn to one of the priciest real estate markets of luxury ranches, private estates, mansions, ski homes and condos in the country. Fine dining abounds, along with cultural amenities and institutions, arts, culinary and food festivals and exclusive shopping.

The Aspen Lifestyle

The locals say “I came for the winter, but stayed for the summer.” Although the world-class skiing of the Aspen/Snowmass area has been the draw for most of the area’s visitors and residents the spring to fall recreation scene has much to offer. With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Aspen is truly a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers! Whether it’s downhill skiing in untouched snow or hiking through dense aspen groves, Aspen has all that your adventurous heart desires. Epic powder days in winter turn to amazing rafting from spring to summer. Warm days lead adventurers to endless trails to climb, hike or bike, outdoor concerts, water sports and cultural pursuits. No matter how you choose to spend a day in Aspen there is an unforgettable outdoor activity right at your doorstep.

Located 200 miles southwest of Denver and 130 miles east of Grand Junction, Snowmass Village is at the north end of the Brush Creek Valley within the Roaring Fork Valley which stretches from Glenwood Springs in the northwest end to Aspen on the southeast end and is surrounded by the White River National Forest. Snowmass Village encompasses 25.6 square miles and is at the base of the Snowmass Ski Area.

Long before miners discovered silver near Aspen and skiers discovered white gold powder on Snowmass Mountain, members of the Ute tribe inhabited the Brush Creek Valley. The Utes originally called the mountain “Cold Woman” because it was often hidden by clouds and was believed to be the source

of bad weather. As the nearby Aspen mines grew, settlement encroached and by the 1890s ranchers and homesteaders began to move in. Today vestiges of this ranching heritage can be found throughout Snowmass Village, from the Little Red School house built in 1894 that is still used as a school today, to the Anderson Ranch Arts Center built in the historic Hoaglund ranch buildings.

In 2010 the accidental discovery by a bulldozer operator of fossilized elements of a Pleistocene ecosystem in the ice age lakebed at the Ziegler Reservoir (now fondly referred to as the Snowmastadon site) put Snowmass prominently on the paleontological map of North America.

The Snowmass Village Lifestyle

Snowmass Village is a former ranching community turned destination resort. This quaint village nestled in the Brush Creek Valley features an astounding array of recreation opportunities. Snowmass Ski Company is the largest of the four Aspen Snowmass mountains, bigger than the other three mountains combined! Snowmass is characterized by extensive and well-maintained hiking, biking and walking trails, and a dedication to the leisure lifestyle. The event and activity schedule is packed year round and is sure to provide something of interest to visitors and locals alike.

The Basalt Lifestyle

Basalt is well known for its Gold Medal trout fishing in the Frying Pan River and boating and other watersports at Ruedi Reservoir. It is a hub for mountain biking in the Roaring Fork Valley. In the winter there are a dozen world-class cross-country and downhill ski trails within 15 miles of Basalt. When in Basalt, get outside and enjoy yourself! Whether you’re looking for some relaxing fun or an adrenaline spiked adventure, there’s an abundance of outdoor pursuits at your disposal.

The town takes its name from 10,800-foot Basalt Mountain just to the north of town. The name comes from the black igneous rock in the area.

The Colorado Midland Railroad, built to carry coal and silver ore between Leadville and Aspen, established the town of Frying Pan Junction in 1887. Incorporated as Basalt in 1901, the mountain town filled with immigrants from Switzerland and

Northern Italy to work for the railroad mines and coal smelters. With the closing of the mines, the railroad rolled up its tracks and the few remaining folks began ranching. Signs of the great railroad era still remain today in a town now reborn as a vibrant community catering to both tourists and residents.

Basalt, with its close proximity to Aspen, is a gateway to all the valley’s recreational activities.

Enjoy a quaint town that has become a favorite treasured destination all its own.

CARBONDALE

Carbondale is 30 miles from Aspen, 12 miles from Glenwood Springs, 101 miles from Grand Junction and 171 miles from Denver. It is located at the base of Mt. Sopris at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Crystal Rivers.

The obvious landmark in the area, Mt. Sopris, towers south of Carbondale at an elevation of 12,966 ft. The mountain was named for Richard Sopris who led a party of 14 on a mineral exploration trip to the area in 1860.

Carbondale is a community-oriented town that offers a down-toearth feel. Its milder climate provides a longer spring to fall season that is great for non-skiing activities. Enjoy hiking, biking, golfing and fly-fishing in world-famous Gold Medal waters.

GARFIELD COUNTY

Glenwood Springs was originally known as “Defiance”. Defiance was established in 1883 as a camp of tents, saloons, and brothels with an increasing amount of cabins and lodging establishments. It was populated with the expected crowd of gamblers, gunslingers, and prostitutes.

Town founder Isaac Cooper’s wife Sarah was having a hard time adjusting to the frontier life and in an attempt to make her environment somewhat more comfortable, persuaded the founders to change the name to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, after her beloved hometown of Glenwood, Iowa.

Its location, at the confluence of the Colorado River and the Roaring Fork River, as well as gaining a stop on the railroad, historically made it a center

of commerce in the area. The city has seen famous visitors including President Teddy Roosevelt who spent an entire summer vacation living out of the historic Hotel Colorado. Doc Holliday spent the final months of his life in Glenwood Springs and is buried in the town’s original Pioneer Cemetery above Bennett Avenue.

Glenwood Springs in 2015 was awarded both as the most vibrant small town arts environment in the United States by Southern Methodist University’s National Center for Arts Research and the 5th Best Place to Live in America by Outside Magazine. It was also named the “Most Fun Town in America” by Rand McNally and USA Today in their 2011 Best of the Road Rally contest.

Outdoor recreation opportunities in Glenwood Springs abound. Activities include whitewater rafting, kayaking, caving, cycling, rock climbing, horseback riding, and world-class fishing.

The Glenwood Springs Lifestyle

No matter how you choose to recreate, you will likely find a venue that will be the highlight of your day. In the winter enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. In the summer you can hike, bike, swim, raft, kayak and fish. There will be more to do than time to do it!

A DECADE OF EXCELLENCE

THE EVOLUTION OF ASPEN SNOWMASS SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY

“Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty continues to provide the highest level of service to our clients...”

2022 marks the 10th anniversary of Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty, and we are proud to recognize our growth as the largest, top-selling real estate brokerage in the Roaring Fork Valley. We are a powerhouse firm of over 190 experts in the industry and 12 offices and we strive to continue leading the way with strategic innovation while providing irreplaceable value to our clients around the world. Though the Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty franchise is 10-years-old, our local expertise is built upon a 20+ year legacy of real estate innovation and influence within the Roaring Fork Valley. When the collapse of the housing market led to the economic crisis in 2008, Aspen and its surrounding areas were subject to an epic shift in how homes were sold and purchased. During the thick of the Great Recession, locals Craig Morris and Ernie Fyrwald, owners of Morris and Fyrwald Real Estate, affiliated with the Sotheby’s International Realty brand with the intention to align themselves with the global brand’s reputation and reach as a way to combat this market turbulence. “Our thought was to attack the Aspen Snowmass residential real estate market while times were tough and uncertain. If we could weather the storm and begin building our brand and our business during

tough times, we would be in a great position when times turned around again,” says Craig, who remains a partial-owner and one of the nation’s top performing brokers today.

In 2012, Aspen market leader Morris & Fyrwald Sotheby’s International Realty and Snowmass market leader Chaffin Light Real Estate merged, forming Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty. Andrew Light, whose father Jim Light founded Chaffin Light in 1978, helped facilitate this instrumental merger. “In 2012, there were three or four companies with similar market share, and I knew there would be tremendous advantages to scale, both for brokers and the company,” Andrew, who remains a part-owner at Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty today remembers. “I stalked Ernie at a Rotary meeting and we met at Little Annie’s for lunch to talk about the new company name and how to make the deal work. In the 12 months before the merger, we were about 19% of market share, combined. In the next few years, we grew market share to almost double that. I think Sotheby International Realty’s brand anme played a part in that, but so did having scale. We kept amazing staff from each company, and both companies did a great job learning to work together as one.”

Ten years later, through strategic acquisitions, mergers, and the opening of several offices throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty has grown to be the largest real estate brokerage in the Roaring Fork Valley. “Our goal has remained the same; create value to our buyers and sellers by knowing and understanding the market and representing everyone with integrity, grit and hard work,” says Craig.

The growth of the company solidified in 2015 when Roaring Fork Sotheby’s International Realty was founded as a subsidiary within the company and two offices were opened in Glenwood Springs. In 2017, our colleagues at Frias Properties of Aspen joined the company, adding our 11th office. In 2019, Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty continued our success by opening a new office in Carbondale at the River Valley Ranch Barn. In 2020, we expanded again with a new office in Willits.

Now, ten years after the inception of Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty, no other brokerage in our valley has the global reach and distinction that Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty has due to our unique culture of broker collaboration and our established presence within every major area of the Roaring Fork Valley.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since four iconic Aspen Snowmass real estate families (Morris, Fyrwald, Chaffin and Light) joined forces to create the Roaring Fork Valley’s #1 real estate firm,” says Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty’s President Andrew Ernemann. “It’s been incredible to see what Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty has accomplished over the past decade, and I’m personally very excited about the next ten years.”

Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty continues to provide the highest level of service to our clients; and it’s our dedication to supporting our impressive brokers and staff with the best training and tools in our industry that will keep Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty at the top of the Roaring Fork Valley real estate market for years to come.

While the success of Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty can be credited to our expert industry knowledge, collaboration, innovation, and market dominance, it’s the energy our brokers, support staff, and owners bring to this company that makes Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty what it is. The awards, the parties, the support to local charities, the support we give each other, the values we all practice – there’s so much to celebrate and be proud of.

Historic Facts About the Roaring Fork Valley

From Aspen to Glenwood Springs and beyond, the Roaring Fork Valley has something for everyone because of the dynamic history of this region. Each of our communities has a rich story and legacy that we encourage locals and visitors alike to learn about. These are eight facts about the Roaring Fork Valley that put and keep it on the map.

One

The Aspen area was originally home to the Ute Indians and called “Shining Mountains.” When the moneyhungry silver miners moved into the valley in the 1870’s, the Utes cursed anyone who slept in the shadow of Mt. Sopris would be doomed to never leave.

Two

In 1887, Aspen became the first town west of the Mississippi to provide businesses and street lights with hydroelectricity – meaning electricity powered by falling water. Homes, however, were still heated by wood stoves. For those who couldn’t afford to heat their homes, the Hotel Jerome functioned as a boarding house for locals. Conveniently, those same locals were likely saddled up at the J-Bar with their mining colleagues.

Three

Glenwood Hot Springs is the largest mineral hot springs pool in the world. With more than one million gallons of water and stretching the length of two city blocks, the healing mineral springs have rejuvenated many famous U.S. figures, such as Doc Holiday, Abe Lincoln, and Molly Brown. In fact, the Ute Indians originally named the springs Yampah, meaning “Big Medicine.”

Four

The 10th Mountain Division, an elite unit of military, was largely responsible for the rapid growth of the ski industry in the U.S. after World War II. The “ski troopers” fired-up what is modernly known as Aspen Mountain Ski Area. The 10th Mountain Division trained for combat throughout the Rocky Mountains and resided in huts scattered throughout the high country. While the 10th Mountain Division is still actively serving our country, the huts they once resided in are now available for rent by backcountry aficionados.

Five

The first ski run cleared on Ajax Mountain was Roch’s Run and was reached via the revolutionary “Boat Tow.” The “Boat Tow” ran from 1937 to 1946, carrying six passengers at a time in what looked like a boat on a rope. Only two boats ran at a time with one going uphill loaded with passengers as the other returned downhill empty. Shortly after the installation of the revolutionary boat tow, the legendary Lift 1A was built and dedicated as the world’s longest chairlift.

Six

Legendary folk singer John Denver was inspired by the Valley’s beauty when he wrote his 1972 world-recognized hit, "Rocky Mountain High." Denver made Aspen his refuge when he purchased his sprawling Starwood estate and the Windstar Ranch in the Snowmass Creek Valley. However, locals at the time were unhappy with the exploitative nature of Denver’s music because of the popularity it was giving Aspen.

Seven

While snowboarding was allowed on Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass, Aspen Mountain had not lifted their ban on snowboarding until 2001. Aspen Mountain Ski Area was one of the last ski resorts in the country to allow both skiers and snowboarders to coexist on the slopes in an effort to increase revenue and keep numbers up. However, the first snowboarders to ever be documented on the mountain was in 1981, where several of them were allowed on the slopes for a photoshoot in lieu of a requested snowboard competition.

Eight

According to Forbes's 2021 list of billionaires, there are 2,755 billionaires worldwide. Of those, roughly 60 billionaires own residential or commercial property in the Aspen area. Local real estate appraiser, Randy Gold, estimates that there may be closer to 75. That would make Aspen one of the most billionairesaturated markets on the planet.

Moving into many points across North America, one can be truly inspired. Whether you are looking at craggy Northeastern seascapes, midwestern stretches on the Great Plains or some trendy city in Southern California, the possibilities seem limitless. This inspires folks to dream big about creating the dream home they’ve had in their minds for a long time. And in the land of opportunity, those dreams may actually come true!

Even for those who have already come to North America to stay, there can be the desire to do a little remodeling or addition to an already-existing structure. It’s very understandable to want to make your own mark, whether it’s in a St. Louis suburb or a Miami condo — and anything in between. Because that’s the thing about this part of the world: It can be so many things. You could be looking at Rocky Mountain living or Arizona desert lifestyles. Sizeable estates can be tamed across multiple private acres, or you can survey the span of your Manhattan penthouse.

Have we got your imagination going? Well, let’s pause for a moment. While we applaud your renovation and remodeling dreams, we also need to be prudent about putting those into action. Nobody wants to get into the midst of a home building or renovation project only to be confronted with unexpected headaches. For the unprepared, the dreams of creating your perfect castle can soon become a far less pleasant prospect. That’s why having a few tips at hand before you get started is key.

Think about the type of partners you will enlist to help you conjure up your perfect abode. Understand the local conditions that can impact the way you need to do the work you set out to do, especially in North America’s stunningly diverse environments. Be mindful of the municipal and state regimes when it comes to zoning and codes wherever it is you are thinking of engaging in your project. Yes, there is some homework to do, but the important thing is passing the test!

It takes a team of professionals to execute a renovation of a home or space. Selecting a contractor that brings an experienced team to the table is key to an enjoyable design and build process. You should be excited about the transformation to take place.

I have been providing cabinetry to the Roaring Fork Valley for 18+ years. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that honesty and integrity are key to successful projects. Key, to keeping you, the homeowner, involved and excited. The best way to follow through with that is knowing that all your subs work together as a team. If your subcontractors are not working together, you may find your project doing more backpedaling than your budget can handle. In the end, you should be as excited as when you started.

970.963.5630 | Carbondale, Colorado john@roaringforkwood.com www.roaringforkwood.com

Keep in mind that some tests can even be harder, especially when history comes into play. When one purchases historical properties in North America, they rarely go into such transactions blindly. One already knows when they acquire such real estate, they are literally living in the past, keeping it alive for all to see.

Maintaining the core dignity of the architecture becomes part of one’s very identity. As such, it can become a point of pride that will not only be satisfying internally but find expression in the awe of visitors whose breath is taken away by the historic beauty you have worked so hard to upkeep and exhibit. Now you are a homeowner and museum curator all in one!

Please do not feel overwhelmed. Whether you are looking at renovating and remodeling a home without historical importance or are leaning into a more conventional project, this is something you can totally do. Just don’t jump into it without some prep. It all starts with becoming acquainted with the particular demands of such projects in your vicinity.

Research those who have undertaken such projects before and learn from both their mistakes and successes. And familiarize yourself with the local regulations that will affect the shape of your project. Here are a few items for you to start with before you get into your potential renovation, remodeling and historical adventure.

THE DREAM TEAM: PERFECT PARTNERS FOR YOUR PROJECT

Nothing is more important than getting a good solid team to work on your renovation, remodeling or restoration project. Naturally, it all starts with the vision you have in mind: That bedroom needs those walk-in closets; that kitchen needs to be expanded out into the patio; that bathroom just needs to be a little bigger than it is; that linen closet can be sacrificed.

We all love to dream, but solid building professionals help bring us back down to reality, and the best of them will take what you want and blend it with what can be done to your satisfaction. There is a happy place midway between vision and realization, and in the end, you will find yourself happier for finding it. Starting with your designer and/or architect,

carefully describe what your goals are. Have them visit your home and take measurements. Be sure they are looking at the original plans. And, of course, vet them through portfolios and testimonials before engaging them.

If you need to go looking for your own contractors, start with the builders. Make sure they are properly licensed and insured and are in good standing with local and national builders’ associations. See who they recommend in terms of plumbing, electrical and other subcontractors. If their picks check out in their own portfolios and testimonials, then you know you’re on the right track.

When you do home in on good candidates, spend some time with them, even if they do check out. Having a good working relationship will be key, especially if delays or other snafus arise. You want to be comfortable with your team. They should be willing to have some coffee and casual chat just so you can get their vibe — and that they get yours.

Providing sophisticated and sensible lighting design tailored to each

Purchase with peace of mind, by getting a comprehensive roofing inspection prior to buying a home in the Roaring Fork Valley.

When evaluating a roof, there are many vital considerations to be made, like finding out how old the roof is, what materials have been used, and if the house is up to code, meeting your insurance carrier’s requirements. In our mountain environments, your roof is constantly under the pressure of the elements. From heavy snow, ice damming, and high winds, to drastic changes in temperature, you want to ensure that your home is covered with a quality roofing system. A roof built for the local environment is more energy-efficient and will give your family peace of mind for the next 30 years!

Home inspectors will paint a general picture of the roof’s age and relatively minor information, but only a roofing expert can provide an extensive review, report, and estimate.

Aspen Roofing Contractors proudly serves the Roaring Fork Valley, with over 30 years of experience. Richard provides direct, expert reports on the state of your roof. Whether it would be best served by a repair, replacement or if it is in fine working condition, you can trust that Aspen Roofing Contractors will provide you with all of the information you need to make an educated decision about any roofing project.

For many of our clients, the right home for their Aspen lifestyle is simply a renovation away. This path to finding the home of your dreams is often much simpler than starting from the ground up. However, determining what is possible can be trickier for the untrained eye, so we often start working with clients early on when they are considering a home for purchase or renovation. In the early stages, we look to see if the property and building constraints are a good match for the vision and product they are looking to achieve. When working to build a vision to bring new life and modern

comforts into an existing home, we always advise weaving in the help of our structural partners and construction advisers to ensure goals are targeted with clarity and a vision of what will allow the design to blossom. With this care, a wellcrafted home that is remade to suit your needs can often be achieved. A combination of diligence and inspiration can foster an engaging and exciting design journey that brings the past and present together in truly unique ways.

THE PLAN IN MOTION

One of the biggest challenges that home remodelers face is the project's planning stage. In the past, reflexive preferences for things such as sprawling dining rooms and blown-out kitchens, or perhaps epic living spaces instead of individual parlors were the norm. It’s great to convert those siloed spaces into a more open floor plan, but be very, very careful of how you proceed. Tearing down walls in old homes, for example, is delicate work.

And if you’re starting from scratch, it may be hard to envision both the efficiency and aesthetic pleasure of such spaces. Be sure that you are working with an architect well-versed in such construction and that your contractor has a great track record behind his past work.

Always keep in mind that making a mistake when drawing up floor plans in either new or old homes will be costly, and if they’re not well balanced, it could affect the resale value. Therefore, it’s important not to cut corners at this stage. This will be a costly and intrusive venture that, when done right, will reap great rewards both in appreciation and aesthetic value as long as you live there.

Once those decisions are made, be ready for what happens when the actual work gets underway. Expect the unexpected, from schedule delays to budget overruns. Stay involved as much as you can as the tear-downs and construction happen. Visit the site a few times a week. Have regular discussions with your team about what is happening in real-time.

There may come moments when an unforeseen obstacle, physical or regulatory, may present itself. Flexibility and agility combined with a few “plan B’s” before you even start can ease the practical frustrations of your project. And in many cases, things going “wrong” can actually lead one to better results than they had hoped for. An open and nimble mind is a crucial tool in achieving your dreams.

RESTORATION & PRESERVATION

Living in a historical home? Then you may be thinking of restoration. Put simply, this is the process of reverting a structure to its condition at a particular time, often to its original condition. The idea is to faithfully depict a property as it was during a particular era of its history. Additionally, any evidence of other periods would have to be either hidden or removed.

Should your property be on a local or national landmark registry, familiarity with regulations will be indispensable all throughout the process. In fact, checking in with official landmark organizations for referrals to reputable contractors in this area is a good idea. Researching your own property, as well as the rules it may fall under, can be a very instructive way to find the best possible partners for your project.

When you’re looking to update features in your historical home, it’s not exactly the same process that you would find working on other houses. As the decades pass, old systems can fall into disrepair or not meet modern standards. There are a lot of ways you can face having to tear up the house in order to save it. And in the case of historical properties, that means taking extra care. You are not just a resident here, nor merely an owner: you are a preservationist. Take that in and embrace it as a philosophy.

Acquiring such a property also means acquiring a very special place in local society. Don’t be surprised if your new position makes you popular at the club or gains you respect at the office. Community leaders will come to you for counsel, and officials will seek your participation in municipal projects. In this way, being a steward of the past can ensure your place in the future of your new hometown.

Extraordinary moments happen on ordinary days. Let’s set the stage for the extraordinary to happen every day.

UNLEASHING THE CREATIVITY WITHIN

MAKING INTERIOR DESIGN AN EXTENSION OF YOURSELF

For many homeowners, considering an interior design scheme can be an exercise best expressed with little effort. Finding easy-on-the-eyes furniture that matches the environment, a fresh coat of paint, and a few cool wall hangings can be enough to satisfy one’s bare minimum aesthetic sensibilities. They might get some minimal counsel from an interior designer and just move quickly into the business of living within the home, eager to start enjoying it.

For others, however, interior design needs to be about much, much more. Elite homeowners understand that their home is really an extension of themselves. From the moment visitors step into the house, they will immediately see a reflection of the residents. Such statements need to be more than just decorative. A substantial ethos should be established, one that speaks to the refinement and discernment of the luxury home’s sovereign.

While elements of design like the aforementioned furniture and decor are certainly important, they should be a part of a greater whole rather than the focus of attention on their own. Floor to ceiling, each room must find features great and small harmoniously expressing the nature of the master of the house.

Paint might matter, but a wall installation will matter more. Carpeting can set a tone, imported Persian rugs tell a story. However you want to roll, pause to think about what the final product should say about you. Here’s an overview of how to approach the thrilling and consequential exercise of interior design.

Remodels work best with experienced team memberswe can almost always expect the unexpected during a remodel and it’s important to have a team that knows how to handle it.

We recommend -

• A full service designer or team that will oversee the timeline, construction drawings and permits

• A designer who will oversee the construction and keep you informed, especially if you are long distance

• A builder and designer that have worked together

• A builder that will give you preliminary pricing, so you don’t get too far down the road without understanding all costs involved

• Start early! With current supply chain issues, you need to give your team enough time to manage and expedite supplies to eliminate project delays

We believe luxury is in the details.

We work with homeowners around the country to design highly customized, sophisticated, and functional furniture & interiors.

As a full-service studio, we make the process simple by bringing together your team of appropriate professionals – architects, engineers, contractors – and take care of the necessary processes and procedures, such as building permits and jobsite supervision to furniture installation, so you don’t have to.

When it comes to residential design and remodeling, you can leave the details to us.

THE CORE OF THE CORE

Before embarking on your own interior design project, take some time to reflect on what this will mean to you. The choices you make right now will resonate for years to come and yes, will make a difference in how you are perceived by others. From the start, you want to control this massive message. This will be like the core of your core, a real inside look at your personality that all the world will see on display.

Authentic luxury living is an organic process that flourishes long after it is set in place. Luxury interiors demand customized design. You already know who you are. Now it’s time to find a partner who can grasp that and bring it forth through the aesthetics of your home.

Acquiring a dedicated partner in the form of an interior designer is a key step. Their job is to turn your surroundings into more than just a comfortable living space: It must be an experience that both instantly puts you at ease and reinforces your own inner strength.

Start off with homing in on the style that achieves this ultimate reflection of your inner self. A timeless classical approach can speak to a steadfast confidence in institutions and all the pomp that comes with it. Contemporary minimalism tells others and reminds yourself that you are a no-nonsense person who avoids clutter and understands the value of “less is more” when it comes to your own focus.

An ultra-modern interior design scheme can constantly propel you into the future, letting everyone know that you are ceaselessly forward-looking, driven and living ahead of your time. Reverse engineer the whole process by transmitting who you are to the designer and see if their vision works for you.

THE LIVING ROOM: WELCOME TO MY LIFE

Your living space, more than any other part of the house, is the place that speaks most loudly about who you are. Here, you will not only spend the majority of your family time and even alone time but also where you will do the bulk of your entertaining. No other room will have the same kind of impact when it comes to interior design strategies. Knowing this, prepare to be bold in ways that you may not have even imagined.

Consider incorporating standout features that transcend pedestrian approaches. Towers of quartz, marble or luxury wood will draw eyes and define the space as they rise to the high ceilings, establishing their own gravity and laying down the ethos of the room. Metallic accents can reflect

a polished persona. You can even level up with luxury wall decor such as boiserie or other intricate installations.

Then fill up that space with loads of stunning furniture. Pile up the couches in corners, as centerpieces and in strategic satellite loc ations so that those awesome parties you throw will create multiple congregation points.

You can go chic and bold, sleek and minimalist or burst into dramatic deep colors. But make sure there’s a lot of stuff in that living room be they solid coffee tables, trophy display shelves or valuable works of art. Finally, light it all up with spot illumination and standout chandeliers.

THE BEDROOM: WHERE DREAMS ARE MADE

If you love the feeling of a luxury hotel room, it’s time to transform that vibe from an occasional treat to an everyday occurrence. The bedroom is that place where you recharge after a hard day of work. It must be welcoming and instantly relaxing, Luxury bedroom design will put you on cloud nine instantly.

A four-poster bed immediately exudes a sense of royalty. Add in an elaborate headboard and now you’re really regal. Augment lighting with silver accents and elegant mirrors. Install walk-in closets, one for each member of the couple. Make it expansive and livable in its own right. All of your dreams start here, in your sleep. Awake to find them waiting for you.

THE KITCHEN: THAT THAT NOURISHES YOU

The most important part of the house must also be the most enticing. A luxury kitchen interior design scheme must draw people in and satisfy all manner of hunger. High-end surfaces like brass and marble invite folks to bring their creativity to the culinary.

FUNDING YOUR LUXURY PROJECT

WHAT TO CONSIDER FOR NEW HOMES AND NEW BUILDS

Whether you are purchasing your dream ranch in Carbondale or about to break ground on a luxury build in Aspen, how. you fund your luxury project is an important consideration both in the near term and in the long term. Not only will the type of funding you opt for influence the process involved in obtaining the money you need, but you’ll also need to consider how the costs for your luxury build, such as insurance and potential renovations, will be handled down the road.

Before you hop on a plane to check out your newest property, use the following to consider your options based on the project of your choosing.

PLANNING FOR A NEW BUILD

For many, the ultimate luxury project is building their dream home from the ground up. If you plan to purchase land and invest in a new home build, you’ll want to consider your funding carefully.

Obtaining a loan for a new build is a different process than applying for a traditional home mortgage. Prior to issuing you a construction loan, most banks will request access to the plan for the home build. Ideally, before you begin applying for loans, you should work with a construction team or luxury home builder to put together a detailed plan for your build. A licensed builder can help you create the documentation necessary to showcase to a lender how you will go about the build.

Once you have a detailed plan backed by the expertise of a builder, it is a good idea to shop around for the best interest rates possible, speaking with multiple banking institutions about your

options. Not all traditional lending institutions offer loans for new builds, but your financial advisor should be able to point you to regional options.

In most cases, you’ll use a construction loan to fund your new build. In order to obtain a construction loan, you’ll need to prove that you have a sufficient income to repay the loan, and most banking institutions will require a relatively high credit score to issue the loan. You can often leverage your existing home as equity if you already own another property. You’ll also need to consider how you will fund the purchase of the land for your new build. You can bundle your loans together, but you can also consider a separate loan for the land and one for the build itself.

Additionally, you’ll need to put down money upfront when applying for a construction loan. The amount of your down payment will depend on how much you are borrowing as well as the specific requirements of your lender.

PURCHASING AN EXISTING HOME

If you decide to purchase an existing home, your options for lending will be more straightforward than for new construction. In this case, you’ll want to work with a lender to obtain pre-approval for the amount you plan to spend on your purchase. This will make it easier for you and your real estate agent to work quickly to close on a house once you find the perfect pick.

If you plan to remodel the home or intend to invest in extensive renovations, you’ll want to speak with your financial advisor about your options for obtaining a personal loan after purchasing the property. This can help ensure that you have ample funding available to renovate before you move into the home.

CREATIVE FUNDING OPTIONS

When it comes to purchasing a new home or building the luxury property of your dreams, if traditional lending isn’t the ideal route, there are other creative options for funding your purchase. Depending on what properties you already own and your credit score, you might consider one of the following options for obtaining the money you need for your purchase:

• A cash-out refinance: If you own a home or property already, you can use the equity from your existing home to essentially take out a new loan on your property for a larger amount. In a cash-out refinance, you receive cash for the difference between your previous mortgage and your new mortgage at closing. You can then use this cash to finance a new build, renovations or the purchase of a second home. This option is a particularly prime choice if you have paid off the majority of your existing mortgage.

• A personal loan: If you are facing difficulties in obtaining a new construction loan, you might consider applying for a personal loan instead. Personal loans are a great option for kickstarting a project and are an ideal fit for those with high credit scores. Often, you can obtain relatively low-interest rates if you have the ability to prove a high income-to-debt ratio.

• Seller financing: If you are purchasing an existing home or are looking for a creative way to fund the purchase of land, you can also explore the option of seller financing. With seller financing, you’ll pay the seller a down payment and you’ll sign a contract agreeing to a specific set of terms. Seller financing is an excellent choice when you are working with a highly motivated seller. Additionally, many sellers will consider this option when they recognize that traditional lending would be difficult or impossible for their property. Seller financing usually requires that you pay off your loan at a much faster rate, which makes it a good fit if you have ample funding available for the new purchase.

BUILD

Along with the cost of purchasing land, investing in a new build or buying an existing home, you’ll need to factor in the price of insurance for your new property. In the case of a new home build, many lenders will want to see proof of an insurance policy prior to issuing you funds, even though the home is not yet standing.

The amount you spend on an insurance policy will depend on numerous factors. Before you make a purchasing decision, it is a good idea to factor in how much the home you want to build or buy will cost you to insure.

The age of your home will influence the amount you spend on your policy. New construction will usually offer you the lowest costs for an insurance policy. Generally speaking, the older the home you purchase, the higher the insurance rates will be.

This is particularly true if the home has any existing damage or outdated features — think sagging roof or knob and tube wiring.

Along with the age of the home, where you live will play a role in your insurance costs. If your home is in an area that faces a higher risk of natural disasters, your rates will be higher. If you are looking at a home that is in a relatively secure area, your insurance costs will be lower.

Additionally, you’ll need to factor in what add-ons you might need based on the climate. For example, if your home is in a hurricane-prone area, you’ll want to ensure you have coverage in the case of a storm as well as flood insurance for damage caused by rising waters.

The price of your home and how much it would cost to reconstruct it will also dictate what your insurance costs are. A luxury home will cost more in insurance as it would require more money to replace in the case of a catastrophe.

The good news is that there are numerous things you can do to help lower the cost of your insurance policy. Consider any of the following ideas to reduce this ongoing cost:

• Invest in renovations: By adding safety features and improving the property's condition, you can cut down on policy costs dramatically. Work with your insurance provider to determine what improvements will help reduce your costs.

BUILD A SAFE SMART HOME

• Bundle your policies: Often, you can find much better insurance rates by bundling your insurance policies. If you own multiple homes, this can help you save dramatically on individual policy costs. You can also ask about discounts by bundling your home, auto and boat insurance.

• Upgrade the structure: Similar to renovations, if you can add features to your home that will help protect it against natural disasters, you can lower your policy rates. This is particularly beneficial if you live in a hurricane- or wildfire-prone area. Specific building materials and structural upgrades can reduce your costs dramatically.

• Shop around: While it can be tedious to switch insurance providers, make sure that at least once every year, you review what you are spending on insurance. Compare rates with other local and national providers and consider switching if you can lower your costs. Additionally, if you find a better rate, ask your current provider if they will match the rate.

Funding is an important part of the consideration process for a new build or new luxury home purchase. By carefully thinking through how you’ll obtain funding, as well as the new insurance costs you’ll incur, you can make the wisest investment decision possible — setting you up for success today and in the future.

EXPLORE A SILVER

MINING GHOST TOWN

Before Aspen was a mecca for art, culture, and extreme recreation, it was a landscape belonging to the Ute Indian Tribe and then silver miners. Eleven miles south of Aspen, on Castle Creek Road, stands a handful of the original structures of Ashcroft, a town built and sustained by silver miners in the 1800’s. Now uninhabited and considered a “ghost town,” Ashcroft is a perfect spot to explore on a golden, fall afternoon. The drive alone is worth the journey, as the aspens change color and the road becomes less trafficked by tourism.

TAKE A HIKE

If you seek a bit of cardio and elevation-gain, take a hike! Here are four epic trails for leaf peeping and crisp, mountain air.

Crater Lake Trail, Aspen

SPEEDING THROUGH TIME:

Rolex and Motorsports’ Years-Long Relationship

When you think about a fine Rolex watch, there are a few things we are sure may first come to mind. Elegance is likely up near the top of that list. And why not? The brand’s dedication to refinement and grandeur has long made their timepieces a standard-bearer of style in the world of high-end accessories. All eyes in the room are drawn to your wrist when you sport one.

Next up may well be precision. Rolex’s hard-won reputation as always residing on the cutting edge of watchmaking technology is renowned across the world. When somebody sees you wearing one, they know you

are the type of person who is serious about the image they project as somebody who takes time seriously — both their own and the time of the people in their circle.

But we might not blame you if fast cars aren’t front of mind when thinking about Rolex. Sure, one might imagine that finish line stopwatches come into play, recording split-second decisions in close races. And you would be correct. Our precision timepieces have long been relied upon for accuracy. While such participation is something the brand is proud of, that only scratches the surface of our involvement in motorsports.

The fact is that Rolex has spent the better part of the last century deeply involved with the favorite pastime of car racing fans. From almost the beginning of professional motorsports, our brand has proudly participated in events, sponsoring drivers and taking a keen interest in elite driving machines and the folks who pilot them.

So what is it exactly that makes for a natural fit between motorsports and Rolex? Some may conclude that all that high-standard craftsmanship affords a sort of undeniable kinship. Others may see the concern with time being a factor. After all, it’s the fastest car that wins the race!

Both of those are true, but there’s also the exclusivity of being a part of something special and sublime that not everybody gets to take part in. Precision gears, stylish elegance, forged in solid metallic splendor and serving the lucky few who get to be in the club, as it were, all humming along with an eye on the minutes and seconds…

It’s all starting to make sense now, isn’t it? Well, it always has for Rolex. And when you take a look at their history in the deep legacy of motorsports, you’ll see even more clearly just what a perfect pairing their timepieces and those marvelously powerful automobiles are, now and across the years.

THE START OF THE ROAD

Rolex has been involved with motorsports since the 1930s in one of the most explosive ways possible. Sir Malcolm Campbell was one of the pioneers of automobile speed records. During an era when consumer vehicles were just starting to travel at the now-standard average speed of about 60 miles per hour, Campbell was defying expectations by pushing his cars to the limit.

On September 3, 1935, the British daredevil racer did the unthinkable. Driving in his customized “Bluebird” car — a stunning design that presaged science fiction vehicles to follow in film decades later — Campbell took to Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats to break a speed record. And that he did, exceeding 300 miles per hour — a first in the sport.

When Sir Malcolm stepped out of Bluebird, having triumphed in his quest, he was wearing a Rolex watch around his wrist. For the brand, this was how it all started. Of course, the man behind the wheel of the greatest precision vehicle of his time had to have the apex of timekeeping technology close at hand. From there, the association between Rolex and motorsport took off.

DOWN AT DAYTONA

Campbell broke his speed records around the world, and one of the places he would return to time and again was the Florida city of Daytona. There, he would break five of the nine land speed records he recorded in his lifetime. As a congregating point for motorsports, it was no wonder that NASCAR founder William France Jr. decided to build a professional speedway there.

In 1959, after two years of construction, the Daytona International Speedway opened for business and held its first race. With France’s improved banking design, cars could go faster and audiences could get a better view of the action. And who was their original timepiece partner, and who has been ever since? Why, Rolex, of course.

The inspiration for this premier endurance motorsport event — one that lasts for 24 hours — has endured over the decades, leading to Rolex designing watches to commemorate the event. The first “Rolex Daytona” appeared by 1963 as the iconic Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph. The official name of Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was applied the following year, and by 1956, “Daytona” would appear on the model’s face.

In a nod to Daytona, this design would reflect the precision machines speeding past with some righteous updates. Past models were updated with sporty, ruggedly elegant elements like inverse colors for sub-dials and moving the tachymeter scale from the edge of the dial onto the bezel.

To this day, both brands complement one another in the excellence they project. Since 1992, the Rolex 24 At Daytona race has awarded champions the latest Rolex Daytona as a prize. This goes a long way in explaining how serious watch collectors consider the Daytona releases to be a sort of trophy unto themselves. You know the saying: To the winners go the spoils!

THE RIGHT FORMULA

Decades past Sir Malcolm Campbell’s remarkable achievement in Utah, and five years after the release of the Daytona-inspired Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph, Rolex took another step into the greater world of international motorsport. This time, a new partnership would lead to a whole different type of timekeeping: clocking the fastest cars in the world.

Formula One racing was first established in 1950 with the inaugural Grand Prix that has become the standard-bearer of speed racing. With successful European championships occurring in previous decades, there was a true global showcase for the most extreme racers in the world.

By 1968, Formula One was considered one of the most exciting annual sporting events across almost every nation

in the world. It was in that year that Rolex formed a close relationship with perhaps the greatest figure in that arena, three-time Formula 1 World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart.

Since that partnership began over 50 years ago, Stewart has been an enthusiastic Rolex Testimonee. Next time you catch a glimpse of him, look to his wrist and you’ll see a Rolex resting there. In tribute to his greatness and his association with the brand, Stewart was designated Grand Marshal at the 50th-anniversary edition of the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

And speaking of partnerships, let’s switch the focus back to Formula One. Rolex went deeper into its association with the racing brand over the years until the inevitable came to pass. In 2013, their Swiss precision watch brand became the official timepiece of the legendary race. It should come as no surprise. After all, catching the exact moment those checkered flags wave over the champs has to be perfect.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION

There are many endurance races in the world of motorsports. But perhaps the most venerable of them all is the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This granddaddy of all the automotive endurance races traces its origins back all the way to 1923, a full year before Sir Malcolm Campbell would start breaking speed records!

Created at first as an almost casual affair taking place on local village roads, it would in short order, become a proving ground for emerging automotive technology. Soon after its inception, car manufacturers like Bugatti, Bentley and Alfa Romeo would use the race to showcase their automotive ingenuity, dominating the circuit for years and years.

Rolex has always had a keen interest in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, not only as part of its commitment to motorsports but also with the Swiss watchmaker’s natural kinship with

this quintessentially French event. And so, by the year 2001, Rolex became the Official Timepiece of the race and has been ever since.

As the 24 Hours of Le Mans approaches its centennial running, Rolex too has become more closely associated with it. In 2010, the watch brand added Denmark’s record nine-time winner of the race, Tom Kristensen, as an official Testimonee. Just as with Jackie Stewart, you can count on Kristensen for two things: excellent driving and one of their precision timepieces resting on his wrist.

In a way, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Rolex represent each other in some unique ways. Besides sharing a close continental connection, they both got their start in the early 20th century (Rolex was founded in 1905) and both brands stand for durability. It’s a natural fit for racers’ hands, whether they’re gripping the steering wheel or checking the time.

MORE AUTOMOTIVE GREATNESS TO EXPLORE

While Rolex is incredibly proud of its many long-standing associations with some of motorsports’ oldest events, there are always more incredible car championships out there. Partnering with the best of this crop continues to present opportunities to showcase the mutual precision craftsmanship of both worlds: automotive and timekeeping.

Keeping in that tradition, Rolex has come to sponsor a number of impactful motorsports happenings around the world, featuring some of the most exciting cars and drivers out there. One such exciting partnership is with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a prestigious competition and charitable event that has been held annually in California since 1950.

Here, immaculately restored classic cars are showcased for their beauty and condition, vying for the Best of Show prize. Rolex became the official timepiece for the Concours d’Elegance in 1997. An additional event at this time is the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, which demonstrates these remarkable automobiles in performance. These are vintage vehicles that owners have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to restore. Car enthusiasts from the world over come to attend.

Another fantastic automotive event that Rolex supports is the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. In this fan favorite, over 550 historic racecars congregate at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. Like the Pebble Beach Concours, this is an amazing opportunity to see classic cars in action — but this time, they are here for more than the show!

At the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, these restored racing vehicles strut their stuff in a friendly non-competitive race. While there are no prizes awarded for speed, it’s still a great chance to see these classic vehicles in action. Think of it as a time machine into the world of car racing past. And once again, Rolex’s association with these ahead-of-their-time technologies is something the brand feel right at home with.

EXCELLENCE, ELEGANCE AND PERFORMANCE

After covering all of the associations Rolex and motorsports have enjoyed throughout the ages, it may not be so easy to tell that of the two we are talking about when we think of the words excellence, elegance and performance. That is exactly the idea that it has been all along. From Daytona to Formula One, 24 Hours of Le Mans and beyond, high-tech cars and high-tech watches are a perfect fit for one another.

Nine-time Formula One winner Australian Mark Webber sums it up best as a Rolex Testimonee:

“In Formula One you work with the best people. It’s cuttingedge. They’realwayslookingforgapsonwhat can give you an advantage. That is why Rolex is here as well, becauseRolexhasalwaysbeensynonymouswithbeing the best.”

We can sum this up in the words of Rolex’s favorite automotive Testimonies. Jackie Stewart tells his own Rolex story this way:

“I’mluckyenoughtohaveafewRolex’s,andthey’veallgota specialstorytotell. It’saverylongrelationship, notmany sports people have relationships of that period, but thenagain, thatshowstheintegrityofthecompany.”

RELOCATING TO YOUR NEW HOME

You’ve probably heard at one time or another that one of the single most frustrating and stressful life events is moving from one home to another. We’re sorry, but we could not disagree more! Yes, we do get it, there is a lot to do and plenty of logistics to be worked out. After all, you’re not just moving your stuff — you’re moving your whole life. And just the thought of the sheer volume of all that encompasses can be overwhelming. But it doesn’t need to be.

Moving is the first step into a wonderful new world. Discovery awaits as you look forward to engaging with a place for the first time, making a whole new set of friends and uncovering fresh opportunities for your future. There are few things as exciting as relocating for those ready for adventure. That should make the hoops you need to jump through to get there a little easier to face.

When it comes to families moving to a new place, there may be additional concerns that everybody else doesn’t face. Simply considering the intrinsic value of one’s belongings means additional care will be required in overseeing their safe transport. Lifestyle changes will have a deeper impact as new communities mean a different set of requirements. And of course, there’s the financial aspect.

None of this is insurmountable — you’ve got this! But you don’t want to go into the process unprepared. As with all other big moves you’ve made to get you to this elevated status in life, being strategic in your thinking and executing well-laid plans can ensure a smooth transition to your new luxury home.

Ready for the Big Move? Here are a few tips that will put it all into perspective and turn that journey into a joyride! ON THE MOVE:

PACKING LIKE A PRO

First thing’s first: You are physically moving all of your stuff from Point A to Point B. This is the core essence of your transition, the most tangible and material aspect of the big change you are about to undertake. And as a homeowner, you are absolutely going to have way more valuable stuff to think about protecting properly.

The best advice we can give when thinking about how to pack your stuff is, don’t be doing it alone! Engaging moving professionals accustomed to transporting elite possessions is critical at this stage. We aren’t saying don’t keep a watchful eye on the process.

But delicate items like chandeliers and decorative vases face the challenge of showing up on the other side in one piece. In many cases, custom-built reinforced wooden crates will be needed.

While it’s great to have the pros doing the packing for you, there’s one thing you simply cannot trust them to do and that is to take stock of your belongings. Creating a meticulous inventory of your most precious belongings is key to finding happiness on the other end of your move. This is especially true of your valuables like jewelry and fine art.

On that subject, be sure that your hired pros have a good track record of moving items and are properly licensed, insured and bonded, especially when they are crossing state lines. Additionally, it is prudent to insure all of your belongings for this transition. Should the worst happen, then ensuring you are financially protected is key.

Finally, keep in mind there are some things you simply cannot entrust to others. Critical documents like deeds, financial records and passports should travel with you, preferably in secure fireproof boxes. Sensitive data stored in computers and hard drives may also require personal handling and protection. The same may go for the aforementioned jewelry. If it’s small, easy to transport and super important, take it with you!

TAKING THE LAY OF YOUR NEW LAND

So now you’ve gotten all of your stuff safely from Point A to your awaiting luxury home at Point B. Congratulations and good job! You got a major chore out of the way with grace and dignity. But the physical moving to a new location is only the first aspect of your relocation adventure. Now comes perhaps an even more challenging stage: Getting to know your new surroundings.

Coming into a new neighborhood means engaging with a whole new community. Cultural mores may be somewhat different than what you are accustomed to. For example, a transition from urban to rural may mean you’ll need to slow down your frantic pace. Or perhaps you’re settling into a part of the world where “Casual Fridays” are kind of the way every day looks!

Regardless of what that transition reveals, get ready to meet your neighbors, check out the local scene and adjust your lifestyle accordingly. Your new local municipality may have regulations you’ll need to accustom yourself to, such as noise ordinances or certain landscaping requirements. Neighborhood associations can reveal opportunities to mingle with your community and better understand the local vibe.

Scope out the local country clubs and golf courses where you are most likely to meet your peers and establish local networks. Get involved with everything from the PTA to homeowners’ associations so you can know how things work in your new area. It’s a great way to both make friends and be sure you don’t get rocked in your new corner of the world.

Drive around and check out everything from shopping to restaurants and local parks. Test out what your work commute may look like so that you know how to budget your time properly. Get out there, get to know the lay of the land and get comfortable with it ASAP!

IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

Moving to a new place also means getting a whole bunch of official business set up to function properly in your new environs. Many of the everyday functions you take for granted will require a redo in your new location. While none of it will be surprising or new, it does require some attention, especially when it comes to the everyday activity of driving.

As soon as you arrive in your new home, be prepared to deal with all things vehicular. Different states have different requirements for everything dealing with cars, boats, motorcycles and anything else you will be driving. Registration regimes can vary greatly.

Some regulatory regimes will require you to take the local driver’s test to acquire a driver’s license. In many cases, you will have a short window to update all of these items, so get on it quick!

educational district, many families want to keep their options open.

Private schools and boarding schools often require a lot of time up front to apply and lots of preparation to pass entrance exams.

Oftentimes, there are limited slots whether you’re looking at facilities run by religious institutions or elite charter options. Getting your little ones into the best schools takes a lot of time and effort. Our advice is to do your research and start reaching out to them as long before the move as possible to get those gears going.

And even if you’re satisfied with the local public school district, many regions will have special schools in their districts for advanced students. In areas ranging from mathematics to the dramatic arts, if your young ones are already exhibiting aptitude in any particular area, you’ll want to look into what the district offers in terms of magnet schools and targeted programs. Again, space can be limited, so get into the process early.

to a new place is establishing a network of healthcare providers. After all, it’s likely taken you years to find all those excellent doctors you’ve trusted for so long. Whether you’re just looking for solid general practitioners or need sharp specialists or pediatricians to keep up with your family’s health, you’ll want that waiting for you when you arrive in your new home.

Fortunately, there are a lot of things you can do to prepare for this change. Begin by talking to the professionals you already trust. With a little luck, your own doctors will have colleagues or an alumni network who can make good recommendations. At the very least, they can identify the best hospitals in your new area, narrowing down your search. Real estate agents and new neighbors and colleagues can also be good resources.

For those who are self-employed or prefer to purchase their healthcare insurance separately from their employer, finding the best coverage is also key. Call around to the top doctor’s offices in your new area and see what they recommend. More than likely, you’ll be hearing the same answers, helping you make the best choices. Or, engage an insurance broker to make the recommendations you need.

PROTECTING YOUR NEW HOME

Relocating to your new luxury home is all about your future. You’re making a change because you see better days ahead for you and your move is going to make that happen. Take stock of where you’re moving to. Should regional challenges like extreme weather events, wildfires or earthquakes be part of the mix, make sure your home is properly insured and up to code.

You’ll also want to be sure to check into the local security situation. While we are sure your new neighborhood will be safe, larger properties on beachfront or in rural settings may mean you’ll want to invest in a more robust camera and motion detection lighting scheme. Or perhaps it will be prudent to communicate with local police departments for any additional security suggestions. With the right preparations, you can settle into your new luxury home with peace of mind.
