NEW! principles of skin care and the oncology patient Edited by M. L. Haas and G. J. Moore-Higgs

Skin care of the patient with cancer can often be a challenge. Without standard guidelines or a handy pocket guide, oncology nurses are often left to their own devices when finding ways to effectively treat skin reactions.

Principles of Skin Care and the Oncology Patient, a complete, new text from Marilyn L. Haas (editor of Manual for Radiation Oncology Nursing Practice and Education [see left], among others) and Gigi J. Moore-Higgs, addresses skin care issues, and is a helpful resource to guide the healthcare professionals who care for patients with cancer that develop skin problems. The book is extensive in its scope and intensive in its level of detail. Chapters begin with an overview of skin issues related to the oncology patient, including details on anatomy and physiology of the skin and accessory organs. A review of common drug reactions with cutaneous manifestations is included, as well as benign skin disorders and their impact on cancer therapy and malignant cutaneous diseases.

ABOUT THE EDITORS Marilyn L. Haas, PhD, RN, CNS, ANP-BC, is nationally recognized for her work in radiation oncology. She is the lead editor of Radiation Therapy: A Guide to Patient Care and the educational CD-ROM program Radiation Oncology Nurses Enhancing Excellence (see left), winner of the 2006 American Journal of Nursing multimedia award. Dr. Haas lectures nationally, and, as a nurse practitioner, she manages skin issues in her daily practice. Gigi Moore-Higgs, ARNP, PhD(c), AOCN®, is the assistant director of the University of Florida Shands Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office. She is one of the first nurse practitioners in the field of radiation oncology, has lectured extensively on many different aspects of symptom management for patients with cancer, and is an editor of several textbooks.

Also included is a discussion of how clinical decisions can affect decision making when purchasing wound care products and treatments. The book also offers important information on skin reactions caused by radiation and chemotherapy, and manifestations are discussed. In addition, you’ll find details on how chronic disease impacts wound healing and how systemic and infectious skin disease can have implications for cancer treatment. Other topics of importance discussed in this comprehensive text include assessment and management of skin and wound pain; psychological distress related to skin problems in the oncology patient population; nutritional needs for healing skin; complementary therapies for oncology cutaneous reactions; and special needs for gero-oncology patients. No more reaching for solutions. No more hunting the Web or flipping through reference tomes. You can stop searching now. Principles of Skin Care and the Oncology Patient is your complete, evidence-based guide to skin care for the patient with cancer, and the starting point on which you can begin your journey toward improved quality of care in patients with cancer. 2009. 352 pages. MAN cancer sex A. Katz

A follow-up to her popular book, Woman Cancer Sex (see below), this new book by Dr. Anne Katz explores how men are affected by a diagnosis of cancer and how they can seek help. Dr. Katz’s new book begins with a nuts-and-bolts discussion of “how things work” and why sexuality is important for a man as an individual and as part of a couple. Each chapter describes the experience of men with different types of cancer and the problems they may face, including pain, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, fertility issues, and more. Written for men and the women and men who love them and live with them through the cancer experience, Man Cancer Sex is a book men can read to help them understand their situation and communicate with their partner.

woman cancer sex A. Katz

“Katz’s down-to-earth, plainspoken counseling is intended for both the woman and her partner (homosexual relationships are included). Given the delicacy of the subject matter and the scarcity of appropriate counseling, this book is a particularly good purchase for consumer health collections, where it may be the only resource for those facing these sensitive, very personal issues.”–James Swanton, Harlem Hospital Library, Library Journal, May 2009 Sexuality after a diagnosis of cancer is a real issue for women and their partners. In Woman Cancer Sex, Dr. Anne Katz tackles this sensitive and often unspoken topic in several ways–detailing the physical aspect of sexuality, highlighting the different feelings a woman might have during her experience, and presenting strategies women can really use in their daily lives. This best-selling book gives your patients with cancer the information and tools they need to reclaim their sex life after the challenges of cancer. ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSING ADVANCED ONCOLOGY nursing certification REVIEW and resource MANUAL Edited by B. H. Gobel, S. Triest-Robertson, and W. H. Vogel

Both a study guide and a clinical resource, this best-selling manual offers oncology advanced practice nurses a comprehensive review in preparation for advanced oncology certification tests and a valuable reference guide that can be used in everyday practice. Each chapter in the Advanced Oncology Nursing Certification Review and Resource Manual addresses a topic important to advanced oncology nursing. Key points in each chapter emphasize concepts for readers to review, while a case study raises relevant questions. In keeping with the manual’s role as a study guide for certification, chapter content is correlated to the weight the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) has assigned to a specific topic on the certification examination. Topics in this manual are representative of the ONCC blueprints for the advanced oncology nursing certification tests, so readers can feel confident that they are studying pertinent material in the same format as in the ONCC advanced practice certification examinations. This manual, though, offers readers more than just a study guide for test preparation. Using the most current clinical evidence and literature available at the time of publication, the topics presented have been expanded and represent a valuable resource for oncology advanced practice nurses, graduate nursing students, oncology nurses in clinical practice, and other healthcare professionals. Whether you are preparing to sit for an advanced oncology nursing certification test or simply are looking for a comprehensive clinical resource for oncology advanced practice nurses, this is a resource you will not want to miss! 2009. 886 pages.
